The girls took turns reading the letter, and Kanon read it twice. Is this for real? "Amano?" she wondered aloud. "Is it the same fella from the magazine?"
Ren shook her head. "I think we stumbled upon a fair bit of attention."
Sumire took a pizza from the box and opened a can of cola to pull away for a bit. Something tells her this might not go down so well.
"Are we this popular now?" continued Kanon.
"Maybe," shrugged Ren. "I mean we were qualified for the Love Live. They want us to sign up with them."
"Honto?!"
"Hold on, it doesn't mean we're getting into a commercial right away. We're not that famous just yet. They're just seeing potential in us. But I believe there's a very good chance of us on the air sometime in the future."
"Are we…?" said Kuku. "Are we going to become a business? Riviera's going to be a business?"

Sumire sighed. "If you're a school-idol fan you should have seen it from miles away."
"Yes, but…" Kuu-chan did see school idols in adverts, but blithely glossed over the real reason why they were there in the first place (though she did buy quite a bit of merch), thinking of the commercial as just another cute show. Deep down, she believed being a school idol was a passion and a passion alone, a labor of love like the unpaid fanworks and cosplays done by people out of sheer loyalty. And the others shared her sentiments. Even Chisato could not speak. The otherwise moneygrubbing takoyaki girl seemed to have placed a boundary on school idols.
"Listen," began Ren, "we need to have a talk about Amano-san. The fact is, he's the sponsor, and we're to sign a contract guaranteeing him certain concessions, one of them being us pitching some products from their agency."
Kanon stood up, her face firm in resolve. "That's where I see things differently, Ren-chan. Contract or no, I will not bow to any sponsor!" She pulled a slice of Super Supreme from Pizza Hut™ out of the box, and angrily devours it leaving some sauce on her chin.
Ren only watched her a bit uneasily. "Sorry you feel that way, Kanon-chan, but basically, it's the nature of the beast."
Kanon dug into a box of Movic™ Grape Jelly candies (Liella limited edition). "Maybe I'm wrong on this one, but for me, the beast doesn't include selling out." She popped one into her mouth and her mood lightened somewhat. "Chi-chan, you know what I'm talking about, right?"
"Sou desu…" Chisato was slumped over the sofa with her feet in the air, showing off her Reebok™ shoes with matching Reebok™ sportswear all the way up to her cap (oh, and Ray-Ban® Aviator sunglasses, too). Her expression was grave. "It's like people only do stuff just to get paid." She shook her head sadly. "Kanashimi da na…" She shifted uneasily in the sofa. "By the way, I'm on a horse."
Suddenly Kanon made a face and let her head fall onto her hand. "Urrrrgh… I can't stand all of this talk of profiteering! My head hurts!" Just then, someone held out a pack of branded mints in front of her.
"Here," said Kuu-chan cheerily with a wink, "take two of these. The doctor from Episode 7 prescribed it." She dropped the mints onto Kanon's open palm.
"Ahh, Watering Kiss Mint™. Little. Pink. Green. Different."
Ren, recovering from her embarrassed silence, spoke up. "Look, guys, you can gun for the big-leagues, and do what the bigshots do, or you can just go back to singing at the booth. It's your choice."
"Yes!" replied Kanon happily, holding up a bottle of Pocari Sweat™. "And it's The Choice of the New Generation." She took a drink and smiled brightly at the camera….
…In Sumire's imagination, that is. She wanted to tell off everybody for their anti-profit stance when everything, even the food they were eating, were clearly marketed. But she was hushed by a look from Ren.
(Author's Notes: This segment pays for my internet bills, and Sunrise just e-mailed me recently demanding a cut jk)
For the time being, Miss Matsuura changed the subject into more acceptable promotional activities such as banners, flyers, and events at Kanon's place. Sumire pledged her school idol channel. They finished the session with designing a Riviera flag, which they will send over to be made and delivered till next week.
Kanon helped out with closing the café for the night, and then she went up to her room. But she didn't feel sleepy just yet. What must she do? Listen to a playlist again?
She sat up in bed and decided to check out one of Sumire's vlogs. She checked out a Shibuya-at-night city lights video, recorded atop a mall building or something, where she was discussing how truly artistic films were hard to come by these days. Does this mean she still works on her online stuff right after school? How much energy does this girl have? She's just like Kuu-chan… no, Kuu-chan only dropped by this late in the night once, so far. Was Sumire-chan doing this every single day?
Was Sumire really the same person who was tearing up that evening in the gymnasium? She said she wanted us girls to be better than her, but the more Kanon looked at her, the more she sensed how far ahead she was from them. Well, Ren-chan was easily on her level talent-wise, but she never had this kind of presence outside of school. So where would that leave her and Chisato and especially Kuku, who were all just beginning to carve out a path onstage? Nah, she thought, say what she wants about being better than her, but for me she'll always be our galactic diva. And I'll tell her just that.
She picked up her phone and searched for her number. Sumire-chan, she typed, sometimes I can't believe you're in our team. And to think that we weren't even looking for you, but you came to us! Well, it wasn't the most pleasant of introductions, but you came to us. I feel so unworthy now. Sumire. Please let me say what I really feel. You are our crown jewel. Please continue to shine with us.
And she sent her message. At that moment, somehow she felt a weight get off of her chest, a weight she never knew was there until now. She has already concluded. She may be starting to break out of her shell, but Sumire and Ren will always be the two pillars who'll hold up the club. Not her.
Sumire was fresh out of the bath when she received the e-mail. She read, and re-read, as if making sure she was reading the words correctly.
"…"
She then looked away from the phone, and out to her closed and curtained window.
You are our crown jewel. Please continue to shine for us.
"Kanon…" she said worriedly. "You don't understand."
The next few days were the fastest Riviera has ever seen. First, there was this text from Ren when she wasn't even at the club, busy with school affairs. The next they knew, they were going to an out-of-town training camp.
Training, huh? Or was it? The destination had an onsen.
And before they could even register it, all five of them were on a van crossing the Japanese Alps.
"Ho ho doo-doot-doot-doo doo-doot doot-do doo-doot doot-do!"
"Can you please keep it down?!" complained Sumire about Kuku's yodeling.
"You could just chill, you know," smiled Kanon. Chisato simply had her ear buds on.
Kuku giggled excitedly. "I'm so so glad I'm in Japan, desu! Imagine having schooool idols and the Alps in one country!"
"Why do they even call this place the Alps?" muttered Sumire. "We're obviously in Asia…"
"Now I wanna see cute lassies playing bagpipes!"
Sumire huffed. "An alpine Japan where folks play bagpipes. Great. Just great."
The journey ended a certain distance out from Kamikochi. The van parked at a village, where a flight of stone steps led high up the mountain. "Minna," said Ren, "I'm afraid the cable car's under maintenance. We'll have to do this."
After almost an hour of climbing with their stuff, and many wayside breaks, the girls had finally reached the top panting heavily. But again, Kuu-chan felt refreshed. "Huwah~ This so goooood! I love the Alps!" Looking around, "Where's Chisato-san?"
Chisato herself was with Kanon, who was helping her puke. "She's got mountain sickness. Let's stop here for a while. I'll carry her the rest of the way."
They checked in at the hostel at around lunch. After a short nap following the meal, they practiced their songs in the open, whilst Chisato spent her time recovering in her room. They agreed not to go into the newer stuff for rehearsal until the next day when Chi-chan could join them.
スーパースターズ! GO!
Shortly before sundown Chisato got up from bed. "Man," she muttered, "I'm being a burden already." She lurched to the shower to enliven her nerves, and got into her dance outfit, planning to make up for lost time.
She found Kanon, Ren, and Sumire at the living room playing a board game. "Oh, Chi-chan!" said Kanon. "Are you alright now? Why don't you stay in bed for the night?"
"Are you kidding?" she said weakly. "You wanna keep a gal like me cooped up?"
"I'm sorry I didn't consider your condition," said Ren. "Will you be fine up here?"
"It will take a little getting used to, but I'll be OK tomorrow."
"We're only going to memorize a few blockings and any dance steps you have in mind. No tiring stuff. We're here more to have fun as a club."
"I can see that," she said looking over their match.
"You want to join?" invited Kanon.
"I'm still a bit lightheaded. You go on. Maybe I'll just keep Kuu-chan company."
"She's at the room right next to the veranda on the second floor," informed Sumire.
Upon entering the room, however, she was surprised to find Kuku on the floor tinkering with a sort of assembly kit. Did she also have that in her luggage? How much space did that take up?
Kuu-chan looked up. "Oh, uh, hiyah Chisa-chan!"
"I see you're quite busy right now," she said sitting on the bed next to her. "They're having a game downstairs, you know. You must be pretty absorbed."
"Oh this? Eheh. This is Kuu-Kuu's Super-Sciencey Future Gadget Laboratory! I make inventions that benefit humanity."
"Time machines?"
"Eheh… I wish."
Chi-chan sat down. She wasn't a tech or engineering buff, but geekiness was (halfway) amusing. "So what are your inventions?"
"Tada! This is my Plus Ultra Nose-matic, desu!"
"What's it do?"
"It can smell loose change that people carelessly drop, even from 20 kilometers away!"
"Huh? B-But why would you even bother?"
"Come on, money is money! If you put together all the loose change in the world, Kuu-Kuu can buy a Harrier Jet, deshow?"
Why does that sound familiar? Ahem... "O-OK...? And what is this one? A stopwatch?"
"It's a pocket locator. See this screen here? It's got flashing dots of light that tell where to find what it's finding."
"W-Whoa! It can search for Dokimon?!"
"It says which people nearby are having their menz."
"..."
She stood to go. "I'll pretend I didn't hear that. See ya."
Later after the board game, Ren invited everyone over to the onsen. It was suitably misty from steam everywhere, and by the time Chisato caught up to them, Kanon and Kuku were already enjoying the water. "Chisato-chan," said Ren, "You tied your sash wrong. Here, let me."
Laugh. "Come on, we're going on a dip, anyway."
Giggle. "I better teach you in case you wrap the towel wrong. Unless you're proud of your letting your figure show."
"Oh? Well, why don't Sumire show off her figure first?"
"Tush," she scoffed. "My figure's not joke, don't talk about it as carelessly as yours."
Just then, Chisato remembered something. "Oh right! I haven't really showered ever since I got to bed. I'll be right back!"
"It's alright, Chisato-chan, you don't smell at all." But she was already out of sight before she could finish speaking.
"That girl must be a clean freak or something," said Sumire. Sigh. "Even I don't go that far."
Ren chuckled. "I didn't know you disliked clean freaks."
"I didn't say I hate them! You're playing with me, again, aren't you?"
Suddenly Ren pulled her along. "Of course I am! Come on, quit standing there and let's have a dip!"
Meanwhile, Chisato had already gathered everything she needed for the bath and was happily humming one of the songs Ren had composed. Stepping out the door, she nearly slammed it in excitement. "Hm?" she mused. "That thud sounded a bit louder than usual. Eheh. Sumimasen, innkeeper-san."
"…"
"Wait, something feels off."
rumble rumble rumble rumble rumble
"What's going on?"
She turned towards the end of the hallway. "W-Who's there…?" she whispered.
Soon enough, she heard footsteps. Two figures emerged from there; even at that distance she could not mistake them—It was the two candidates who were with them at the audition! She almost instinctively rushed back into her room.
Grrrr what are those two doing here?! Did they track us down? No, it's too scary to be true. Doesn't matter, they shouldn't get to onsen!
A little later she was at the hot bath again. "Chi-chan," said Kanon, "back so soon?"
"I-I realized I don't want to halve my onsen time with you guys."
Kanon laughed. "Chi-chan takes half a day to shower and dress up."
"Hey, cut it out…" she said uneasily. And she dipped herself into the water up to her mouth. Sumire stared at her for a bit, but soon enough the girls returned to their chat. We're probably gonna stay here till after midnight. I just hope those two are already in bed.
After about half an hour of just listening and savoring the bath, Chisato filled in at a lull in the conversation.
"Guys?"
"Hm?"
Chisato smiled sheepishly. "Am I, um…? You know…"
"What is?"
"Nothing. I was just a little worried."
"I think you're a great trainer," remarked Kuku going over to her.
"Eh? Hey, I didn't say…"
"We talked about this already, right?"
The others began to close in around them two. "What's with being a trainer, Chisato-chan?" asked Ren.
Chisato was downcast. "To be honest, I'm a little insecure about our audition."
"…"
"Hey, stop looking at me like that. Don't you have anything I could explain to myself?"
"Do you really have to explain to yourself, Chi-chan?" asked Kanon. "We danced so well we passed the audition. Hold on… Are you also scared of performing at the Dome?"
"Sumire-chan is right. If we'll have to appear at a place like that, we can't just perform casually." She glanced for a moment at Yazawa hoping to be backed up, but her face was in a shadow. "Sorry, Ren-chan."
Ren went over to her and touched her shoulder. "Are you feeling pressured? Moh, we were supposed to relax and all. Kanon-chan's right, we have what it takes. Worrying is not our style at all, isn't it right, girls?"
"Uhm," agreed Kuku. "Chisa-chan, you're a little weird tonight, suddenly talking about the audition. Are you still feeling unwell?"
Sumire stiffened up. Something must have happened. Was there a sudden call or something? Wait, their phones are in their bags right next to the pool. They should have known at once. So why is this girl acting strangely now?
But just then Chisato seemed to snap out of it already. "Huh? Ah, no, I'm fine!" Laugh. "Man, can't you take a little mood swing?" She grabbed Kuku and dunked her into the water. "Hahahaha, I was just catching you off guard and you fell for it, ahahaha!" Whereupon she got pulled down herself. When they resurfaced, Kanon greeted them with a splash of the hot water, and everybody got into the game… except Sumire.
"Seriously. This is not a beach, we're making a commotion." A splash interrupted her, and she gave in in annoyance, as well.
After the bath, the general atmosphere over the girls was so light even Chisato was laughing along and chatting naturally. It was almost one in the morning. The rivals were probably all asleep by now. She'll probably just wake the whole team up a bit late if the two were going somewhere early.
"I'm already researching the Gratin thing for the café," said Kanon. "It looks pretty simple, actually. Maman is the best cook in town, she should pull it off nicely."
"Anything that isn't meat should be pretty easy if you ask me," replied Chisato. "Really now. You have no idea how tiring it is to make takoyaki."
"No, no. It's not just the cooking, of course you need to put your own touch to it. Maman is the most artistic when it comes to food."
"Maybe it just comes down to the spices."
"No, no, you don't get it! Just work at our place. You'll see how we do everything!"
"Can I apply, too, Kanon-chan?" asked Kuku. "Your café looks like the nicest in Shibuya, no kidding."
Kanon laughed. "I keep hearing that from some of our customers. Not to brag, but everybody says ours has that ambience that's totally unique to us—Mmph!" She had just bumped into Sumire's back. "Hey, what's with—?"
She froze.
Right in front of the girls was that pair. The contenders at the Love Live audition! Everybody were stunned. Is this what had been bothering Chi-chan? But much to her surprise, it was Sumire who looked to be the most affected. She could see her gritting her teeth.
"Sorry for appearing like this in the dead of the night," smirked the one with the shorter hair. "Were you frightened?"
Sumire only clenched her fist.
Ren was the first to answer. "Good evening. I… We just didn't expect somebody from Tokyo would be here. You see, we don't remember even mentioning our club outing to anyone at our school."
"You tracked us down," growled Sumire.
Her long-haired companion only twitched her elf-ears.
"Sumire-chan," reproved Ren. "Let's just talk it out to our fellow guests. It's just a coincidence."
"A pretty bad one," hissed Chisato under her breath.
Short-hair laughed softly. "Oh, I must say you're half-right, Miss Matsuura. The two of us usually undergo a wilderness routine in-between major performances to help prime us physically for the demands of this career. As is quite a handful of groups we know. So I assumed you just might be having the same idea."
Sumire kept staring at them, still not believing they only chanced upon them here.
"Why do you know our names?" demanded Kuku.
"We just came in this evening to rest here a while before beginning our routine early tomorrow," she continued, ignoring Kuku, "so I'm glad we found the time to talk to you guys. We have our own tent. We might be away for days."
Elf-ears giggled. "But it looks like you're just here for the onsen. So how was it? I hope it can improve your voice or something."
The tension in the air began to crackle.
"Joan," said her partner, "you heard Miss Matsuura. Let's make this civil." She looked over the whole group. "Let's get on with the introductions." She bowed elegantly. "Sagina Pavot at your service. And she… Joan Mia Payton. Personally, I call her Joan, but her fans know her as Mia."
"Mia…" mumbled Kanon. "Mia Payton…" And her slight accent was unmistakable. Aloud, "So she's American?"
Mia only yawned. "Sacchan, you're only referring to me by my earthly name. I am actually Kel-Ol of Koa-Hu, don't you remember?"
"…"
What?
The Riviera girls gaped at her.
"I am from the planet Koa-Hu in Messier 82," said Mia. "I may look 15, but I am actually 2,116 years of age in Earth chronology." She began to swoon dramatically. "But it has been destroyed by a stellar flare so I needed to find a new home, and then I came here five hundred years ago to this beautiful planet."
"…"
"Please don't mind her," dismissed Sagina with a hair flip. "It's her chuunibyo phase."
"It's not chuubinyo. I tell you, I'm an intergalactic visitor who arrived here five-hundred years ago to shower bio particles on chosen humans. I landed on a crop circle in Kansas."
"That again?"
To the five girls Mia loudly whispered, "She has only recently known my true origins, and even now she does not believe it. But she was the first to hear of it."
Chisato stepped forward at once. "Alright, stop playing with us. You don't even have a spaceship."
"It's here! In my pocket!"
"Heh?!"
Mia quickly showed them a large wallet of rich leather which impressed them for a moment, but that was instantly replaced by awe over what was inside—a huge silver brooch of the finest, most artistic (and most bizarre) craftsmanship. Judging by the design alone, it could have been made by famous artist, and therefore expensive. But…
"Hora!" announced Sagina pulling her partner to her and whirling with her in a magnificent flourish. "Let's finish our introductions."
They showed off their signature poses as they spoke.
"Duplex…"
"Deluxe!"
"Desu!"
"Wah!" wailed Kuku as she caught herself posing with them. "No, no, I didn't, I'm not with them! Believe me!"
Sagina laughed softly. "I'm sorry Ming-san, you just can't help it. I suppose you were destined to fall for us."
Destined?! Wait, I remember… That picture in my phone… Is it actually them?!
"No! Did… Did Elf-ears-san implant a brain wave in me the minute I saw that photo?"
Chisato approached them threateningly. "Alright, hold it right there. I won't let you talk trash to my buddies."
"Here!" beamed Mia, throwing her a round plushie. At this, Chi-chan melted and squealed like a toddler.
"A corocot stuffie! It's my lucky day! Kyaaaaa! It's so round"
The two turned to the remaining three Riviera members. They had intended to spare only Sumire of their charm offensive, but it seems her two companions wouldn't budge that quickly. Oh yes, this Matsuura person was the child of the school's owner. She's probably something of a boss herself. And the orange one… there's something in her attitude.
Sagina laughed. "Don't worry, girls. You don't really have to be, well, afraid of us. I sincerely believe we'll have a close contest everytime we meet."
Kanon look puzzled. Are we really on the same caliber as them? I guess so, we have worked hard for this. Our practice really paid off. That's why they're going hermit to try and train harder. They're making themselves ready for us!
"You should take very good care of Yazawa."
At this, they were even more puzzled. Sumire herself only lashed back. "Enough of this! Stop feeding us nonsense!"
"Are you classifying yourself as nonsense now, hm, Yazawa?"
"Guh—"
"I suppose we'll have to spell it out for all of you, then. Heh. Think back to that audition. It feels so nice to win a Love Live audition on the first try, isn't it? Well, the panel gave a lot a weight to Yazawa being on your team."
Everybody were shocked at this. Sumire was now close to tears. She quickly turned and fled outside leaving her teammates still paralyzed on the spot. "Are you alright, guys?" said Sagina. "Don't worry, I'm sure everyone felt really undeserving of the Love Live at some point.
"I'm sure you have heard of Cinderella.
"You think she would have been noticed by the prince if she didn't get help?"
"…"
"That was what Perrault wanted to say. The author himself had declared the real moral lesson of the story.
"It does not matter how beautiful or talented you may be, but without influence you will be forgotten, you will deserve nothing."
Their heads seemed to whirl around. Kanon refused to believe everything. Ren… she had to believe it. She knew about it.
"Saa, let's go, we have already said what we intend to say. See you in the contest. Hope nobody gets sick or anything." And the two left softly chuckling to themselves. "We called you beautiful and talented, alright?" shot back Sagina as they parted.
A tense silence ensued, broken only by Chisato's squealing and Kuku's confused whimpering. But… a little later another noise came. From Kanon.
She was now sobbing loudly.
Chisato and Kuku stopped in their tracks at the sound. They stared in shock. Kanon crying?! Whilst they were rolling in captivity? What exactly was going on?! They rushed to her and asked anxiously what was wrong, but they only added to her tears. Ren turned away with a clenched fist. She must do something, and fast.
Down at the stone stairway, Sumire sat in the cold mountain air, breathing white puffs, facing the starry sky above the trees. This was a point of pride of hers; she can withstand hours of brutally cold airconditioning when others were visibly uncomfortable. She had been trained since childhood for that, it was important in performing indoors.
She heard soft footfalls behind her. The white puffs steamed out of her like a boiling pot.
"I'm sure you hate me now."
Kanon only gazed coldly at her back.
"You regret ever considering me for your team… am I right?"
"…"
Chuckle. " 'Crown jewel,' indeed. You feel so insulted now, huh?
"You think I'm privately satisfying myself that I'm the one who carries the team? Well… Maybe I am…" Chuckle. "I am still the rotten jerk from Day One till now.
"What are you planning now, huh? Kick me out? It's…. It's fine with me, to be honest." She stood up. "Welp, I'll be packing up soon. Don't worry, I know how to go back to Tokyo. I got my pocket money increased at home. Matsuura, you take care of them from here on."
Ren didn't answer. Neither did Chisato and Kuku.
Kanon bounded forward and grabbed her by the collar from behind.
"It can't be true, Sumire-chan, right?" she sobbed through her misty breath. "Right? Even if I'm like this, I can shine. Right?"
Sumire wheeled round and took her wrists. "It's true," she said fighting back her own tears amid the fog spilling out of her mouth. "Everything those two dirtbags said were true. I am the reason we passed the audition. I'm the only reason for that. The panel wanted a child-star comeback. It's business!" Her voice started to break. "Do you even have any idea how many other people more talented than you are fighting to ace that stupid audition? It's impossible to stand out! No, not as your own average self. So stop deluding yourself that you can shine! You are outclassed everywhere, Kanon Takami! Everywhere!"
Kanon let her tears flow freely.
"You should have known from the time I bullied you. I was doing you a favor! Because if I didn't, the world will! Do you understand?! Takami?!"
"Can't…" blubbered Kanon, trying to see her through the clouds of breath. "Can't we at least…. Can't we at least shine together? Sumire?"
"No! You can't do that! I outclass you! And I'm not putting you down, that's the truth, it's got nothing to do with my talent, it had everything to do with my name! Unknowns like you have to fade away standing next to me. We can't shine together like that. That's why I told you to be better than me!"
"Sumire!"
Kanon threw herself around Sumire and wept in her bosom. "Sumire-chan… Don't go… Please… Don't leave us behind. Let's shine together!" And she cried out in pain, drowning out Sumire's own sobbing, and Chisato's and Kuku's tears. But then Ren, who has kept her wits about her, went forward and tore them apart.
"Get ahold of yourself, Kanon!" she snapped. To Sumire, "We will not accept your view of things, Sumire. We don't care if it's true. You're with us now, and our group is Riviera, not Sumireland. There's not one name here. There's five.
"Quit building up a name by yourself, alright?"
"Sumire," Uncle Kiyoshi had said that day, gripping her shoulders after she lost the child star audition. "Quit sniveling. You have to go back. You can't back out. You can't stay with the Yazawas forever. Make a name. You must make your own name!"
Is that so, Uncle? Can't I make my name with anybody else who is not named Yazawa?
"Minna!" said Ren to the other two, "Sumire is challenging us! Are you going to measure up to her?"
They stopped crying and stepped forward. There was no hesitation in their movements. Sumire has become too precious to let go, not as a crown jewel, but as a part of their lives. They closed in on both sides for a hug. They will do everything it takes to measure up to her. So she won't leave them behind.
The tears flowed again, but everything was calmer now.
"Guys…" whimpered Sumire. "Please don't…." Sob. "No. You will measure up… No, I will step down… Wait, what am I saying?" Whereupon she was surprised by a pat on her head.
"Sumire-chan," smiled Ren. "There's only one standard to measure up to. The audience. Make them smile. Let's keep doing that at school, OK?"
