Caution: There's spoilers. So if you hadn't gotten to the end of the current Lucifer season, don't read this yet.
She planned this out for months. Trixie was going to be with Linda and Amenadiel, having a marathon sleepover slash babysitting weekend with Charlie the cutest baby there ever was. Ella promised to keep everything to herself and keep anyone else from bringing up even a modicum of information to Lucifer. Though obviously sometimes, it was hard. It was Ella, and she kept wanting to bounce baby name ideas off of him.
She knew the perfect location, too.
So Chloe drove Lucifer up to his wide open hills estate, and had asked him not to ask questions until she said so. So they stood in the middle of the white beautifully furnished living room with the huge balcony and the most gorgeous view of the country. It was heavenly there, which she knew was a subconscious attempt to have heaven with him when he wasn't able to go up there. Even if he himself didn't want to admit it. Lucifer was both intrigued and fighting one of his huge smiles, and slightly worried based on what had happened the last time she'd been here. She had led him by the hand to the middle of the immaculate white carpet, turned around, and could barely contain a grin welling up from the deepest part of herself.
Sure, they weren't married. And maybe they wouldn't ever get married, she didn't care either way. She did have his ring on her married finger, but if that's all that could happen, then she was happy. Chloe had thought for months about how to tell him. Would she just blurt it out and hope he had a smile on his face? Would she bring Trixie with and Trixie would blurt it out? Would she whisper it to him one morning while they had slept peacefully the night before? Would she put his huge hand on her stomach and hope he understood what it is that she was trying to say? Maybe all of them if he wasn't getting the message?
"You said you saved this place for special occasions." Was all Chloe could get out without losing it completely at first. Lucifer nodded, his brow furrowed but a small smile ghosting over his lips. Almighty Lucifer, she wanted to kiss him so bad right then.
"Did I ever tell you how I told Dan about us having Trixie?" Chloe asked. Lucifer shook his head, and that little smile disappeared. He hadn't figured out how to save Dan yet. But she knew he would find a way. And if he wanted, she would help him. "It was during work, at the small precinct we worked at when you met me. I was worried how he would react. Since, you know. We hadn't planned her and while I loved him a lot, it was hard to tell how he felt about me sometimes. I just blurted out that I was having Trixie right there in the middle of the precinct, tons of uniformed officers were walking by us, but only he heard me. Dan stopped walking with me, I was terrified of his reaction, but his face turned into the happiest I had ever seen. He threw a case file of papers in the air and just started dancing."
Lucifer started chuckling at the image and she joined him. "And you know that he isn't a good dancer." They continued laughing for a moment until her stomach started to ache.
"There was, a part of him that showed through all that happiness. Part of him was sad. And it wasn't because I was pregnant or anything like that, it was because he had something more to protect now. And I didn't understand until a lot later that his sadness was because he had to figure out a way to break ties with those dirty cops. Or at least figure out a way to pacify them so they wouldn't come after me and the baby. He didn't ever figure out a way to achieve that balance. But I know you will." She watched Lucifer's face.
"What are you saying, Detective?"
"I'm saying that for the past two months, I've been trying to figure out how to properly tell you, how great a dad, you'll be."
Chloe put his huge, trembling fingers across her stomach. And though she was now five months pregnant; she hadn't started showing yet. She watched him again, Lucifer's face held those same conflicting emotions that Dan had. Just as she knew his would.
"You're-you're-you're…" he gulped and blinked back tears. 'you're…going to…have a…."
"Baby." She finished for him, grinning.
He'd memorized every time her grin was that big before. When they danced for the first time at Lux. When he had tickled her neck with open mouth kisses their first morning after. Her squeak-laugh…
"I can't begin to tell you, Chloe, how much I love you." Lucifer began, shaking laughter coming from his mouth as if another entity were escaping him. He took both of her hands, holding them to his chest and grinning. "But perhaps in raising this child, you'll begin to see."
Chloe squeak-laughed once more as she got on her tip-toes to kiss him, and he slid his arms around her waist to pick her up from the ground. She broke their kiss to laugh, and his booming angelic laughter mixed in, filling the room and spilling out to the afternoon air beyond.
Chloe was right. He always discovered no matter how late, that she was. He would easily be able to balance ruling the universe, with being a father to his and Chloe's child. No matter who that child turned out to be, they would know without ever having to ask, that he loved them unconditionally. Just as much as he loved their mother.
