AI-Arc 2 Chapter 7: My Fair Regal Lady
Walking the streets of the Royal Capital as a knight always felt calming and monotonous to me, but this day was different.
The difference between the two brothers still surprises me. Reinhard was, for all intents and purposes, the definition of what a knight should be for me. Even looking at him all these years later still makes me feel ashamed while reminding me of my lack of talent and flaws to be the proper knight expected of the heir of Juukulius.
It is a great honor to be called the Greatest Knight; a title I fought for all the way to attain. But I still have major flaws that are left to be addressed, works that must be completed, and knowledge that must be learned.
Subaru was the complete opposite.
I heard he was adopted, but the difference between him and Reinhard went beyond that. Their demeanor, the way they act; they couldn't have been more different.
Subaru was rash, sometimes juvenile, and seemed to be carefree. If what I heard from Reinhard was the truth and not modesty, he was also diligent.
Yet, they couldn't be more different.
I, like many others, heard about a mysterious adopted kid that spearheaded the inventions of Astrea Trading Company, which was not of the common tongue a decade ago. Still, there was more to their demeanor I was curious about. I looked at the squire walking beside me, waiting for me to start the conversation.
"Subaru, if you may give me the pleasure to inquire you not as your superior but as one fellow spirit arts user?" Judging by the way he looked at me, he seemed to be disturbed by something.
"First, stop influencing Kage, and we can talk. I get it, your affinity is higher." Influencing Kage? Was he talking about his contracted spirit? It must be my Divine Protection influencing his spirit. It was best to let him know or it might end up causing unnecessary conflict between us. Still, I must teach him about manners first.
"I'm not actively influencing your spirit, Subaru," I assured him. "Also, while I'm friends with your brother and strive to have a similar relationship with you too, you must be careful while talking to your superiors. It might cause you unwanted trouble in the future." It is my first and foremost duty to turn him into a proper knight as his mentor.
He stopped walking and turned to look at me directly. His expression seemed to have a familiar emotion, but I couldn't make out what it was.
His gaze went between me and his spirit, which he just made visible in his palm. He looked at his spirit for a second and turned his gaze towards me to talk.
"Thanks for the suggestion, but you haven't given a proper explanation about Kage. If you are not actively doing it, then what is it?" He seemed confused and curious. His eyes still had that unsettling emotion that I quite couldn't figure out.
"It is my Divine Protection," I stated. "It enables me to see, talk, and be liked by spirits. Your spirit should be able to resist it, albeit confused or affected. I can't turn it off. Does it cause more concern apart from your spirit getting confused?"
I did feel the micro spirits around to be less than the one at combat evaluation. I'm still rather curious about his brand of spirit arts. It's not combined affinity or just crudely forcing micro spirits. There is a spirit art technique being used, just like the attack he used against the commander.
"It did lower Amaranth quite a bit, but that's not the issue. Kage acts like— never mind." He cut off, before clarifying. "She acts like a teenage girl attracted to a handsome man who passed by."
"Let's leave it at that, okay?" It's best to ignore his comment about looks. It feels like a personal issue I shouldn't touch upon. I decided to focus on the main goal of the conversation.
"Amaranth…" I trailed off. "It seems like a proper name for a spell that focuses on rejuvenation. I presume its name and effect is a reference to the flower it took its name from. "It would be best to lighten up the mood before continuing the main part of the conversation.
"It is! How do you know about its effect? I'm unaware that the name of the flower is known, considering that it is an uncommon variant?" He seemed surprised by me having uncommon knowledge.
"I indulge myself in my spare time by reading. I must say I'm quite the bookworm." It seems like we may have a common point considering him being interested in hearing what I say." I must add I usually prefer books that would aid me in my duties but I do also read about our nation and everything within it, it's flora included."
"Do you read about the arcane arts as well?" He was looking at me with quite the interest. I must say I'm joyful to see we have a common point. "I mean, about magic, mana circuitry, or even spirit arts if you managed to find a book about them. I did want to search for books that had information about the spirit arts, but I couldn't find anything other than common knowledge and repetitive information. "He seemed thoughtful for a moment. "You are also a spirit arts user, right?"
"Indeed, I am one. I would like to entertain the thought that I'm a talented person in that regard. However, I can't understand your technique. It's not forcing micro spirits to do it; they're doing it out of their own volition. It's a rather interesting technique. I'm curious about the way you implemented it."
"It's more akin to a marking spell. I just mark myself as an ally and whoever I'm fighting an enemy. Still, whenever I'm around my brother it weakens to a point that it's almost unnoticeable. I'm sure you have better spirit arts techniques,"
"I do have my unique spirit art spells, but I was more curious about the spells you displayed at your combat evaluation…" His face grimaced when I mentioned his combat evaluation.
His performance was nothing short of commendable, so there was nothing to be ashamed of. His swordsmanship left more to be desired, but he displayed quick intuition and proper decisiveness. Still, it was impossible for him to get close to the commander even when the commander was holding back.
"I know I did bad, but I wouldn't mind listening to what I did wrong." He strives for self-improvement— that's commendable.
His swordsmanship is comparable to a knight of his age, but it's not much for an Astrea. He does use a whip with noteworthy proficiency. I wonder if he mastered the weapon or his mastery is still at its early stages. If it's not his prime, he shows good promise with the whip.
He had one more spirit art I was eagerly asking about. I would say he gave out a good performance but a change in weapon might be required for better performance. I should also add the commander's assessment.
"In my assessment, you did well enough with some major flaws. According to the commander, you rely on following a single plan too much. He is an experienced fighter, so my suggestion would be to take his words to heart. Also, using your other spirit arts earlier would've been a better choice. May I ask the technique you used as well?"
Subaru looked at me with a confused look for a second and then continued. "It's similar to Amaranth. I mark enemies and allies, but I have to constantly keep track of them. Spirits can decide to answer my call or not, but I have never seen a quasi-spirit reject my call— at -Ul level at least."
He continued, "The people I marked as allies get healed, but, being honest, it's not that good in that regard. The people or objects I marked as enemies, on the other hand, are a target of aggression for spirits. Still, I can't command them with specific directions, and it's up to them to listen to me or not. I need to ask something; did your spirits answer my call or were they just inclined?"
It seems like my guess was wrong. He can't command them individually, but he can pick his targets and mark allies as well. A useful spirit art for a unit battle.
"My spirit maidens were inclined. They did want to go towards you, but I didn't feel a desire from them to attack the commander. Still, I might be a bad example in this situation. You can break the coordination of an Acolyte knight and their spirit mid-battle with it. Albeit they are strong fighters, so please avoid these kinds of situations."
"Compared to me, how strong are they?" I should let him know the danger an opponent might possess.
"They are more comparable to me in terms of combat potential. Still, there are barely any issues between Lugunica and Gusteko, so no need to worry about them." I assured him but chose to elaborate further. "But it won't hurt much to know more about them, in case of a worst-case scenario where you were to fight them."
"They're an elite group of knights and have high spirit affinities, even for Gusteko standards. Still, your spirit affinity might be higher than them but they are also skilled fighters and masters of mana enchantment. A fight with them would not end well for almost any knight apart from the very best."
He looked disappointed for a moment, but after that, he just let out a dry chuckle.
"Apart from our best, huh?" He mumbled.
"Clarify?"
"Don't mind it, I was just thinking." He dismissed me. "Anyway, Is there anything else you would like to ask? For I too have plenty to ask you of."
"We should continue our patrol first. Let's discuss while we walk." He seemed surprised for a moment but then started to walk along with me down the street.
"Hey, you still haven't checked my bombs. Should I throw one of them for you to see?" He casually said. "Actually, don't stare at them. It won't end well."
"I will check them after our patrol is over. Please keep your demeanor."
There are some days I really want to beat some sense into some people.
Today is one of them.
It's been only two days since I started patrolling with Julius, also known as supermodel knight, and it was mostly talking about how a knight should act and walking along the decided patrol route. It seemed like Julius's idea of a knight was someone who upheld the code of chivalry and always kept a respectable demeanor.
In my opinion, it's a snobbish way of thinking but with good intentions. Still, I can't say I'm too impressed by knights apart from Julius himself. The way they treated demi-humans like they were criminals started to shatter the image of knights in my head.
Today, witnessing three thugs roughing up a quarter-elf and no one daring to interfere but watch until we got there does not help my mood either.
The scene before me was enough to make me enraged. Three assholes brutally stomped a helpless person at the ground while spitting and shouting slurs. While running towards the scene with Julius, I had a brief window of how the assholes roughed up the man at the ground.
One of his eyes was already bruised, and the other one was in a bad condition. His face was already full of fresh scars, implying this had been going on for a while before anyone intervened. He was coughing, struggling to breathe, and the floor near his head had blood on it. His arm was bending at an angle that gave uncomfortable sensations in my stomach, and I couldn't even see his torso because of those thugs' legs.
Julius acted faster than me and dashed towards the scene, drawing his sword to give the message. I highly doubt any of the thugs were skilled at mana enchantment, thus giving them no time to react to Julius.
"Fuckin' knife ear asshole—" the thug was cut off as Julius grabbed him back from his collar and dragged him away from the man. Julius was looking at the thug with a clear expression that portrayed his disgust.
He looked at the other thugs who stopped beating the poor man in the ground as well. I also dragged the other one by the collar and did the same as Julius. A part of me wanted to punch this guy's teeth in, but I don't want to give the image of a knight who used violence as the first form of the answer.
However, it would be a lie to say this guy didn't deserve it.
Unlike Julius, I let the guy go after putting myself between him and the man on the ground. The third one probably got the message. I waited for Julius to talk and decide what to do with them. Beating a citizen was still a crime punishable by one day in the dungeons. It was up to Julius to decide if we should enforce this or not. Thankfully, he didn't disappoint.
"It is unfortunate, but I must detain the three of you in compliance to the Kingdom's Laws"
The thug in front of me and the one still being held at the collar by Julius simply looked defeated. It was meaningless to fight a knight, let alone two, and Julius was famous enough for people to surrender without resistance.
The third thug on the other hand had another idea. He looked at the alleyway close by and thought he could make a run for it.
I don't know what kind of idiotic logic he used to reach that conclusion but he looked at the quarter-elf to spit and then started to make a run for the alleyway.
I grabbed my whip from my waist and decided to teach this asshole a lesson about his idiocy and a spice of gravity. I cracked the whip just far enough to pass right near his arm and used the handle within my hand to make the whip hit his arm sideways, thus entangling it.
"Let me go you fking witch cultist!" Well, he had it coming.
"-Murak. Throw this asshole to a wall!-" I know Kage would think like me. Sadly, throwing this piece of shit to explode against the wall would be too much.
Still, since Murak had lightened him to a point that allowed me to freely throw him as I wished.
I grabbed the extension of the whip with my free hand and immediately pulled the guy towards me. He was too surprised and going too fast to react, so the moment I grabbed his torso, I put my leg behind him and forced him to the ground. After that, it was time to teach the guy what would happen if he suddenly became much heavier.
"-Vita. Okay—Done and done. Hey, can we use the el- version on this guy as well?-" Kage was clearly mad at the guy. She was still trying to get used to Julius's divine protection and it looked like she decided to focus on other emotions to keep her mind occupied.
In any case, it's a good thing we practiced using vita properly. If she had cast in its normal force, the guy would've been a smear on the pavement, which is a horrifying thought of its own.
"-Sadly, no. Even so, I would be lying to you if I said I didn't want to.-" I looked at the asshole, who was now lying on the ground and seemed to be in great pain. Did we use too much force? Thanks to our connection, Kage knew what I wanted her to do. She stopped casting Vita on this waste of space.
I had my whip loose from the thug's arm and put it back to my waist. I looked back at Julius on what to do. When I turned back, I saw two of the thugs looking at me, clearly distressed. Julius, on the other hand, looked at me disappointed? It's not my forte to read others' emotions. Hell, even my adopted family should be known for that.
"Subaru, it is advisable to use force as a last resort and in a more controlled manner in the future."
"I... uh, sure. But wasn't the situation already a last resort?" I didn't know what he meant.
"Subaru, I must point out that he is coughing blood." After hearing Julius's words I turned around to see the thug coughing up blood and breathing heavily."Ul Pandemonium" I barely managed to omit those words after seeing the harm I've done.
I watched as spirits rushed towards him to heal his wounds, albeit much lower since Julius was around. Julius's water spirit, Kua, also joined in the fray and started to heal him. Probably at Julius's command. Thankfully, the damage didn't seem to be too much as Kua and in a minute, spirits were able to fully heal him.
Vita is not well known, honestly, I had no idea how many people knew about it, so this guy probably had no idea what was happening to him. I remembered I didn't even check on the quarter-elf they roughed up.
I'm a fucking idiot.
The moment I turned I witnessed Julius's water spirit, Kua, healing the demi-human as well. Still, it seemed like he had internal damage so we immediately had to get him to a healer. I'm not one, but I knew that coughing up blood was definitely not good news.
I looked back at Julius, slightly embarrassed about my mistake calling it mistakes would be more right. Before I could make an offer, Julius spoke.
"Subaru, I'm counting on you to carry him to the Royal Institute of Healing. If you have any healing spells, use them on the unfortunate soul. Now, if you may, I have to deliver these individuals to a guard station and carry out the proceedings."
After giving out my orders, Julius turned towards the three thugs we caught and signaled them to move while standing in front of him. They probably understood that making a run for it would be an idiotic idea.
I turned my attention towards the demi-human lying on the ground to take a better look. His face seemed better, but his arm was still in a rough shape, and his legs did not look as well. One of his sharp ears was bleeding, possibly had more damage as well.
His torso also seemed like it was roughed badly, but I wasn't sure if he had any broken ribs. I crouched near him to talk if he was okay about being carried. The Royal Institute was only a ten-minute walk from here, but I wanted to make sure if he was okay with being carried first.
"Hey, can you talk?" He looked up to see me and my uniform. He seemed scared for a moment but quickly calmed down. He probably realized I meant no harm to him.
"Ehgh...ahh…"
"Well, I assume the answer is no. It would be best before I make sure he has no problems about being carried." I said. "I will carry you to the Royal Institute for healing, alright? Blink once for yes, two for no."
He barely managed to blink once with his open eye. Getting my confirmation, I lifted him off the ground, bridal style to avoid hurting him further.
"Ul Pandemonium." It's not much but minute spirits should heal him a bit before we get there. Still, it won't amount to much if he doesn't see a healer.
I walked towards the Royal Institute at a rapid pace. The guy seemed to look a bit better, but I was not sure if he had only internal wounds or broken bones puncturing an organ. Well, people around the street were looking at me weirdly as I was carrying a roughed-up demi-human.
I continued to walk at a rapid pace until I felt a warm sensation within my chest and heard the guy coughing. When I looked down I saw blood on my uniform and the guy looking at me with terrified eyes, trying to stop his cough.
"Don't worry, we are almost there." Looking at someone that hopeless and roughed up brewed some emotions deep within me. Mostly sorrow and anger.
As I walked inside the institute, I immediately gathered some attention, and the reception tensed up. The Royal Institute of Healing did offer its services to all citizens, but it wasn't free. They did offer their services without cost in dire times, namely if diseases run too rampant in the city, but I highly doubt they would heal a demi-human for free.
I walked towards the reception with the guy still in my arms. I do have the right to use their services for free if I declare my position as a knight, but I doubt it extends to this poor man. Well, I'm way more than affluent enough, there is no harm in paying for his treatment. The receptionist was looking at me like I had lost my mind. The receptionist was about to say something before I interjected.
"Sir, they have..."
"I will pay for him. Where should I drop him? I want to make sure he is treated well before I leave." The receptionist continued to look at me for a brief moment before she called someone to get the quarter-elf. It's already rare to see one and they were already acting like I brought a monster. I can't comprehend why they act like this.
I watched as they took him into a room and disappeared from my sight. I got my coin pouch from my waist and started to count. I didn't want to bother talking with them too much. I took fifteen divine dragon gold coins and placed them on the counter.
"Is it enough? I can pay more if it's needed."
"Sir, this is too much. We only charge two divine dragon coins for extensive treatment and stay." I did overshoot a bit. Might as well make sure this guy has a proper stay.
"Then please make sure he gets the treatment he needs and stays here for the night." The receptionist seemed confused why a knight would bother to pay so much for a quarter-elf, but frankly, I didn't care much and insisted. It's nothing for me, but for the poor guy, it must feel a lot.
"Of course, Sir. Do you want us to get something to clear the blood?" I looked down at my uniform to inspect how bad it was; it was worse than I thought. It almost looked like I had murdered someone in cold blood.
"I wouldn't mind if you had something to wash it off. I still have a patrol to return."
"It's admirable to see you are bound to your duty, Subaru." I turned around to greet the familiar voice.
"Well, I doubt you would let me leave early today, Julius." He still looked like his usual self: calm and collected. He watched as an attendant brought a bucket full of clean water and cloth to start cleaning the bloodstains from my uniform. I asked the attendant to let me do it as nicely as possible to not freak more people out.
Julius patiently waited until I finished cleaning my uniform. I will definitely wash it tonight and wear the spare for tomorrow, but this should get me around the patrol. I looked back at Julius, waiting for his command.
"Subaru, may I offer to pay for his treatment?"
"Already handled it, no problem."
"Then may I offer to pay you back? As the highest-ranking knight present, it's my responsibility to oversee the proceedings." I sometimes wonder if Julius practices in front of a mirror to speak like that.
"Julius, it's just some coins. It doesn't matter as long as the guy gets better." Julius looked at me like he was making his mind up about something.
"I must admit, I was worried after seeing your demeanor and manners, but it's assuring to see your heart is in the right place. Sadly, I also have to add that your manners still leave much to be desired in comparison with your brother."
Why did he need to compare me to Reinhard? I already knew the answer anyway.
"Al Cranvel" Mana around me stayed static for a mere second before failing to take form.
Sadly, my hard work was yet to bear its fruits. It's been a while since I first thought of Cranvel as a new spirit art spell, but it seems to be more arduous and complicated than the first two of my spirit art spells. My spirit maidens revolved around me; I could feel their disappointment, but it's not them to blame.
I should work harder to become more deserving of the family name I've been bestowed with. I gathered my concentration to focus on honing my swordplay and the spirit arts spells I could already perform. It would be wasteful for me to stop working to hone them further. I raised my sword to a proper stance and prepared to cast Al Clarista.
"I didn't know you trained here, Juli." I heard a familiar, informal voice behind me. I truly wish for him to give proper attention to his demeanor and manners. It seemed like he at least decided to train before our patrols; that's commendable.
"A pleasant morning, Subaru. If I may ask, how is your life going?"
"Fine, I guess? How about yours?"
"The weather itself is pleasant, and thankfully I'm fortunate enough to have no problems as of right now."
"You are fine as well. Okay. Hey, uhh… Can I ask for something?" He seemed nervous. I hope he has nothing that may cause trouble.
I walked towards him and placed my hand on his shoulder to reassure him. He should feel free to ask me questions as long as they are reasonable.
"Please feel free to ask for my help or knowledge, Subaru."
"I was just going to ask if you could train me? Haruo is on a long mission right now, and I could only get so far swinging a sword on my own."
"May I ask who is the individual you call 'Haruo'?"
"Ahh, my bad. It's the nickname I use for my brother." It made more sense now. Still, it's improper for him to use sobriquets in public settings.
"Subaru, considering Reinhard's rank and reputation, it would be improper for you to use nicknames in public."
"Sure. Also, can you remove your hand now? No offense, but we are looking quite weird from an outsider's perspective." It would be improper to touch someone without their permission, so I removed my hand from his shoulder before answering.
"Well then, do you desire to practice your swordsmanship or whip?"
"With a sword. I use the whip as a sidearm. I would become a joke if I used a whip as my main weapon as the little brother of the Sword Saint." It was a shame to hear his reasoning, but it would be improper for me to ask if there was another reason for his words.
I walked backward and nodded my head to signal Subaru to unsheathe his sword. I readied my stance and waited until Subaru had done the same. Even before we started it was clear Subaru wasn't too special when it came to swordplay. His stance was the default one, not favoring any techniques, yet it seemed unrefined.
Nonetheless, it would be improper of me to tell him what I found before testing his limits. I should first treat his swordsmanship as more comparable to an average knight and work my way up from there to get a reliable reference of his current skill level. With my mind being made up, I called out for Subaru to ready himself.
"Subaru, unsheathe your sword and face me."
…
Unbeknownst to these two souls, several ladies were watching them high and at the back of the tribunes of the training arena. It wasn't uncommon for ladies to observe knights' training. Julius was already among the favorites of ladies, and his chivalry only added more to his charm.
Normally, they would observe him for minutes at most and leave, not wanting to cause any misunderstandings, but today was different. The black-haired brother of the sword saint walked in the training grounds and greeted Sir Julius Juukulius as a friend rather than a knight in the lower ranks.
It was intriguing, to say the least. It was hard to hear them, and they were about to leave until Sir Julius put his hand over the young knight's shoulder; how intimate were they?
"Those two seem close."
"Keep it in your dress, Mary. Male knights aren't into each other like those crude scribbles you call stories."
There was some commotion between the ladies as to how close the senior and junior knights were. until some of the words echoed enough for them to hear.
"... I use the whip…" The whip? Both of them were carrying swords.
Whispers and giggles started among the ladies. More of them gathered to see what the commotion was about. They were even interested enough to see the knights having a mock duel. There was a flurry of blows from Sir Julius which Sir Natsuki tried to parry; even the ladies noticed Sir Natsuki having difficulty in blocking them.
Their mock duel continued for another ten minutes as Sir Julius increased the pace while Sir Natsuki started to have trouble keeping up. The duel reached its conclusion as Sir Julius faked a swing, causing Sir Natsuki to raise his sword to block.
Instead of trying to land another slash, Sir Julius got extremely close to the black-haired knight and hit his hand with the pommel of his sword.
The sound of Sir Natsuki's sword hitting the stone floor of the training arena's ground echoed throughout the training grounds.
They stayed near each other for a moment before separating. The girls noticed that they were entwining their hands with each other. It was brief, but it seemed like Sir Julius let Sir Natsuki's hand go before separating. Sir Natsuki bent down to pick up his sword.
When he got up, he turned around to find the source of all the giggles. For a moment, ladies were struck by the difference a simple change in hairstyle made. Sir Natsuki's combed hair fell during the fight, and he had sweat all over him.
Normally, his face was plain but now, his plain-looking features were more akin to handsome and intimidating. It seemed as if this simple change was enough to make him look attractive.
"I know what I'm writing next time"
"Mary, please don't..."
"He will surely be at the top."
"For Od's sake, Mary."
…
"Juli, why are there a lot of ladies looking at us and giggling? I wasn't that bad, right?" I hope I didn't fail that hard to make ladies laugh at me.
"-Subaru, I don't like their looks. The way they see us is as if we are prey to them.-" What the hell was going on with those ladies? Even Kage sounded worried.
"If I may ask, is your hand fine, Subaru?" Okay, it hurt for a bit, but it's not worth bothering about. My hand got healed already by Amanrath. I raised my hand to show it to Julius.
"I can heal myself; don't worry about it. Look, no more bruises. Now, I wasn't that bad, right?"
"You weren't bad, Subaru. I must admit your mana enchantment seems to be much better than the knights I train, but your swordplay leaves more to be desired. Don't be disheartened by this and continue honing your skills."
"I'm not one to slouch, don't worry." I raised my hand and gave Julius a thumbs up while giving my best smile possible. He looked at me for a moment and then continued.
"Subaru, may I give you a suggestion in regards to appearance?" Here we go again…
"Sure." I shouldn't be rude to him, it's his first time saying the exact same words I heard over a million times.
"I must recommend that you keep your hair down; it looks much better." Goddammit.
I was sitting in the dining hall of the garrison, waiting for Julius to come back. He told me that he had some formal paperwork to do, but it wouldn't take him long. Because of that, he told me to order dinner for us both and wait for him.
According to him, he should arrive before dinner comes. Well, I don't mind taking a break from the god-given gift of the ladies' knight, so I'm fine with it. It's been two weeks since we were patrolling together, but I keep seeing people, especially ladies, staring at him.
I decided to lay back in my seat and relax, listening to the rumblings around me in hopes of hearing more casual talk compared to Julius. I closed my eyes and slumped to appear like I was resting my eyes. It was hard to make sense of rumblings apart from some free windows, but it didn't take long for me to hear the first one.
"I got slums on the patrol, ugh. Can't we just let those plebs tear each other apart?" It didn't even take a minute to hear a snob asshole.
"-Can I use Shamac on that asshole, please?-" I'm worried about Kage being too trigger-happy-looking.
"-Kage, please don't do such a thing. There are too many witnesses.-" I think that should be a good reason for her.
"-Ahh, next time then?-" I won't answer this one.
I didn't bother with listening to that asshole for long and decided to search for something else. After a while, I heard two ladies talking.
"These ones are much better than the previous ones, Mary. Still, I think you are acting quite strangely while writing them." Huh? Someone seems to be writing a novel. Well, I hope it's something good. I'm bored to death reading about mana circuits.
"It would be my pleasure, Elena— Hey, isn't he the one sitting there?" I was intrigued to look around to see who they were talking about, but I closed my eyes on purpose to look like I was resting my eyes. It would be obvious I was eavesdropping on them if I reacted.
Sadly, I couldn't hear them because the rambling ensued again. As I was planning to sit tight and open my eyes, I heard an old male voice talking to someone else.
"If the little brother of the Sword Saint is half of the man his brother is, our kingdom will be much better."
I was not even able to dream a scenario nor a life that I would be able to catch up to my brother, let alone reach a tenth. I consistently fucked up over small stuff in the last thirteen days. I'm not even on the field, and if I'm like this right now, I wonder how bad it will be when I start my duty.
I think I let myself go too much. From this day on, I'll study harder. I should at least be able to do my job properly. I have around seventeen days left until I leave the city, so I should tighten my schedule as much as possible.
Actually, sleeping once every two days might not be a bad idea. As I tightened up from my place and opened my eyes, I saw Julius walking towards the table with his usual look. He sat on the opposite side of the table before talking.
"Fortunately, my duty finished even earlier than expected. Did you order our meals?"
"I did. Julius, I want to talk about— ugh, never mind. I'm just a bit confused about something I'm working on."
"May I offer my suggestion?" Well, at this point, sure. Anyone's ideas are welcome on the problem I call "lighter".
"Sure, it won't hurt to hear a second opinion. I'm struggling with a project of mine, but whatever I research for solutions yields little to no results. I'm currently reading mana circuitry but mastering it enough to create complex systems would take a while to achieve."
"It's unfortunate for you to be in this precocious situation but wouldn't consulting another master in the field you require help be better?" It's a simple suggestion, but he makes a good point."
"I usually prefer to do stuff on my own but sure. I will write a letter to Ros-chi and ask for help. I should also write one for Rem."
"Subaru, may I ask who they are?"
"Ummm… Long-distance friends. You probably never heard about them."
"Very well, Subaru. I must add that our next week's patrols will be at the Royal Castle. You must make sure to have the proper demeanor and manners."
I was trying to understand why Fourier wanted to sit in the gardens of the Royal Palace. He made excuses, saying he wanted to take some air, but I know it's a lie. My Divine Protection, however, did not work when he said he wanted to see me among the flowers, which confused me further.
He's coughing, again.
Every day I look at Fourier it's clear his situation is getting worse. I truly wished for Felix to find a remedy for him. I don't know if my heart could bear a world without him. His situation was getting worse and worse with each passing day, and I don't know how much fight was left within him.
Fourier's hair has long lost its luster. His body is getting thinner each passing day. The old sparkling mischievous and happy look left its place for a sickly look. Still, one could still see the fight left within him and the glint of courage. I felt my heart beating differently while looking at his eyes— until he started to cough again.
"EghEEE..eheee...uh… This one is new"
I was lost for words as I witnessed what he was talking about. Blood... on the handkerchief he was holding. I should let Felix know— maybe it might help him in his research to find a cure.
It's unfair for me to expect the cure from him, but he is my only hope left for our Fourier. The Dragon we rely on was nowhere to be seen, and there are still no reports from Sword Saint. I was deep within my thoughts as the knights on the patrol came here to make sure Fourier was okay.
"Prince Fourier, may we aid you in any way?" I recognized the Royal Knight and the person beside him. Julius Juukulius and the sword saint's brother were looking at Fourier with worried eyes.
"I'm better now…Aren't you worrying a bit too much, Julius?" He even needs to take a breath between long sentences.
"It's my duty, which I'm honored to uphold, my liege." Julius was as formal as usual but Natsuki seemed different.
"umm… My liege, is there anything I can do for you as well? I mean, I would offer help, but I doubt I can do anything for the Royal Family apart from cracking some good jokes… Actually, I apol…" I was getting annoyed by his lax demeanor, but it seems like Fourier had other ideas.
"heh… What makes you think you can do better jokes than me, Sir…?" Why is Fourier forcing himself to talk?
"Natsuki Subaru Astrea. I'm honored by your ques…" At least he is trying to correct his lax attitude
"Let's skip the pleasantries… It's hard for me to keep up the conversation."
"Let's just say I've a colorful history, my liege."
"Did you ever dance with..ehm... one of your male friends wearing a dress?" I couldn't understand where Fourier was taking the conversation.
"My liege, can I tell it to your ear only?"
"Invoking someone's curiosity… very well, come close."
Subaru walked close to Fourier and bent down to get just near the ear of Fourier and started whispering in a low voice so only they would hear the conversation. Fourier started to snicker at first until hearing something that made him laugh too much.
"haha...ehehehe...uhh… Snob and threatening?"
Their conversation continued for a while until Fourier collapsed from laughter that slowly turned into coughs.
"Fourier! Fourier!… FELIX!" I shouted to Felix, hoping he would hear me at the library. He should be close to our location.
I saw Julius coming close and his water spirit leaving his side to heal Fourier. I was crouched beside Fourier, desperately waiting, unable to do anything to aid him. Natsuki Subaru also came close, looking like he is considering doing something or not, but it doesn't matter.
My attention was on Fourier whose coughing slowed down and then stopped. Fourier stayed on the ground for a moment before getting up and shaking his clothes to get rid of the leaves on his clothes. He then sat back in his seat as nothing had happened and looked at Subaru's face to speak.
"What happened after that?" He just collapsed and now acts as if nothing happened!?
"My liege… are you sure that you want me to continue?" At least Subaru had some sense within him. I was angry at him at first, but looking at his face, I could see he was also worried. Also, there was something else familiar with the way he looked and acted.
"It's an order." I never saw Fourier use his authority like that. I wonder why.
"As you command, my liege. In the end, Reinhard received so many flowers that we had to build a new flower bed for them. This was the last time I've ever heard the name Natsumi Schwartz." Who is he talking about?
"Truly, a fair lady indeed; image of a regal woman." Fourier seemed to be barely holding his laugh.
"Indeed, my liege. Truly, the image of a fair regal lady." Who are they even talking about? They both seem to tell the truth.
I continued to observe Fourier and Subaru talk like they were friends for years. As I was witnessing the scene, I could see Felix running towards us with all of his might. I was watching Felix get close until I heard one of the most random sentences Fourier ever said which says a lot considering who he is.
"I wonder how I will look in a dress." I truly wonder what Natsuki Subaru said to him.
I've started to lose my nerves ever since Julius decided to give me forced lessons in manners and demeanor. It's been four days since my talk with the Prince and Julius has been making sure I don't repeat that 'misconduct'… the Prince also enjoyed our talk. I turned my gaze to watch the carriages pass by near the garrison from the window right beside me.
One of the knights that left the garrison with an earth dragon reminded me I need to buy one or at least ask dad to deliver one. Although I'm a member of the cavalry unit, I haven't even purchased an earth dragon.
I learned how to ride one from my brother, so bonding is the only obstacle. Nevertheless, looking for a ground dragon right now is a much better way to spend my free time than listening to Julius. As I walked through the streets of the merchant and thought about what I can do after purchasing a ground dragon,
I remembered what I should buy as well. I can finally buy the ingredients to finish the lighter!
Ros-chi sent me a little design and description that could help me complete the lighter. Unfortunately, I must sit through hours and hours of Julius talking about how to open a fucking door to a lady or how to relax someone.
In the eyes of this fool, flirting might make people relaxed or flustered, but me flirting with them is one of the best ways to creep them out. My eyes continued to wander until the prick in charge decided to hit the blackboard with the stick used to point stuff.
"Subaru, I must insist for you to focus your attention. Your demeanor and manners were lackluster, to say the least." I think it's time to cut my losses and state my intention to Julius to lock me in this room for useless stuff.
"-You acting like a gentleman is a dream I truly wish for…-" I still can't understand why Kage is also fixated on this as well.
"Julius, I know I'm not the best at this kind of stuff, but there are much better things I can do in my free day rather than sitting here and listening to… this" I pointed towards the blackboard where there were scenarios and possible answers for common questions one can ask. Well, at least this one is not as boring as the previous day's lesson.
"May I also point out what happened at the Royal Castle. Your manners around the prince were unacceptable and too lax."
"He didn't seem to mind. Don't we use manners to show respect to other people?"
"Manners maketh the man, Subaru. A true gentleman must be an example with their demeanor and the way they conduct themselves in." Manners maketh the man… When you put it like that.
"You have my attention now, Juli. You should've said that from day one. I would've given all my attention from the start." He raised one of his eyebrows for a moment and looked at something behind me. He immediately put his hand to his heart to give a salute.
"I'm at your command."
I immediately got up from my place and did the same. It seems like the commander entered the room before us noticing.
My duty never stops and is always monotone, but there are some days I can't comprehend the scenes before me. Today might be one of them. I was looking at Sir Julius Juukulius, the most upstanding Royal Knight, teaching a common expected manner to Sir Natsuki Subaru Astrea, a famous inventor in his own right.
Normally, you would expect people known as these to be strict and talk about complicated issues, but what I was witnessing went against that expectation. He looked more like a big brother teaching his younger brother how to act properly around strangers. I continued to watch them while standing at the entrance until I was noticed by Sir Julius.
"I'm at your command" He appropriately saluted. Immediately, Sir Natsuki Subaru got up from his place and did the same.
"I'm at your command" I don't have anything for them, so I should just let them continue whatever they are doing. Od knows Natsuki Subaru is in dire need of a lesson in regards to manners.
"At ease." I left the room to leave those two to their own devices.
Three days have passed since I last had a manners lesson with Julius and there have been a lot of changes. There wasn't much happening, but there was a fair amount. The prototype of the lighter is finally finished, but I am waiting for Reinhard to return from the mission to test it tomorrow. It didn't work out for him.
If he couldn't do it, it's something impossible, but I don't know how to put that into words.
In the capital, we were in the lounge of the Astrea Mansion. Uncle Grimm and Auntie Grimm were also trying to console my brother, but he was depressed as usual. Although he acted as though he was fine and had a calm look on his face, for any one of us who knew him, it was obvious that mission failure broke his heart.
Haruo said it took him just two days to get to the Augria Sand Dunes, but he couldn't pass the time in the sand. I tried to assure him that he tried everything, but he didn't listen. It's not even a lie, he literally tried everything.
Despite having DP's that weaken magic used against him to almost nothing, he could not break sand time with them.
Numerous times, he tried running at full speed at it, which is beyond anyone's comprehension. Even though he tried to deal damage or cause small earthquakes, the sand time was not affected at all.
It seems like this Sage guy is a shut-in cunt… if he is even alive. Under the light of the mansion, we were sitting in the garden at night. At least he seemed more successful than us in trying to console Reinhard. Yes... My father... is the most successful one at consoling others.
Where do we go from here? Me killing the white whale? Weird things are happening in life. I focused my attention on my brother who seemed to be a bit better than before.
"Haruo, don't worry about it. If you can't do it, it's impossible." Well, it's my seventh time saying this on the last day, but he needs to hear it.
"Thanks, Subaru but I should've succeeded. It's my duty as Sword Saint." His voice had a small tinge of sadness that managed to slip past his act.
"Reinhard...stuff like this...happens." Uncle Grimm was also doing his best. Actually, he might be the second most effective of us. Well, his case actually made sense; he somehow communicates so well with expressions, it's impressive.
"There wasn't anything that could be done, sweetie. Let's change the subject to lighten up the mood." Auntie is right, but there aren't a lot of subjects to talk about.
"Well… The trading company is doing fine and the Russell deal is over if anyone is wondering about that." Russell might be one of the last people I even want to hear about. If half of the stuff I heard from my father was true, he tried to scam us over seven times before agreeing to a fair deal. Also, father had to hire Od knows how many advisors to keep up with that cunt.
"Can we talk about someone else rather than Russell? How about…Hey Rein, wanna look for a girlfriend for you to my accolade. I mean, if you smile towards them it should be enough for you." Well… I'm not one known for my social talents.
"-I sometimes wonder if you practice being an idiot or is it just natural talent?-" Well, Kage seems to be in her form.
"-Natural Talent-" I will accept this time since I deserved it.
"-Not surprised.-"
"He is doing his best, Kage. Sorry but I don't want to, Subaru. Maybe next time? We can look for one for you if you want to?" His habit of constantly feeling sorry is coming up again. Also, no thanks Haruo. I don't want you to work on another impossible mission.
"Leave that to Grimm. He is the ladies' friend among us." What was father talking about? Why is Auntie blushing right now? At least Uncle Grimm decided to speak first.
"Carol and I… got close...after my throat… got slashed."
"Close..ah. Hold on, did you manage to capture Auntie's heart after losing your voice?" Did he really pull that off?
"Yes… I did." Uncle Grimm is above us mortals. Father was right.
"Teach me your ways, Uncle" I should know how.
"Okay, enough of this. I think I will go to sleep." Auntie got up from her seat and walked towards the door. Uncle Grimm was also smirking as he got up from his place and walked behind her. Well, he didn't answer my question, but whatever. As we watched both of them leave the room, father looked down with a tired face. Reinhard also seemed saddened by this. It wasn't too hard to guess the context.
"You were hoping to ask the Sage about Lou… I mean, mother's condition, right?" I did visit her while I lived at the mansion and visited her once when father brought her here to make sure she was safe while everyone was here. Well… he also probably did it to make sure she got the cure as fast as possible if Sage decided to bother with us.
"I did give your brother a letter, but since it seems like there is no way to contact the Sage," Father seemed desperate for a moment, but his expression immediately changed into a calm one.
"Sorry…" Haruo tried to speak but Father interjected.
"Don't be. You tried your best, and there was nothing to be done." Father was right
There is nothing to be done.
I was still waiting with Reinhard at the training grounds like Subaru told us to. Our duty ended a day ago and I already delivered my report to the commander of the unit and commander of the kingdom knights. Still, it seems like I may have skipped some lessons on punctuality since he asked to meet here twenty minutes ago, and he is nowhere to be seen. Also, I was perplexed to learn Reinhard's mission was a failure. If he did not have enough strength to do it, no one did. It was an unparalleled dishonor to us Royal Knights. Our duty is to protect the Royal Family, but currently, we can't do anything to prevent or correct our current circumstances.
"It's been a while since Subaru told me he would come. Maybe I should check on him." Judging by small twitches forming on his face, Reinhard also seemed concerned.
"Reinhard, May I ask what was Subaru doing as you left the manor?" I was still wondering what took Subaru so long. Reinhard might have a clue.
"He said he would do his final calibrations and come. His estimate was around five minutes… We can ask him now, he entered the street as we spoke." I still can't understand how he does that.
We did not have to wait any longer as Subaru entered the training grounds two minutes after Reinhard's statement. Subaru was carrying something akin to a toolset and something else within his hand while looking excited. He ran towards where we stood and put the toolbox down. He raised his finger, asking for a moment while trying to catch his breath.
After he caught his breath, he showed what he was grasping in his hand. It was a cube that looked like it was made of steel and had a hinge in its upper parts, implying it can be opened. It also had four discs below the hinge level.
"This is a lighter, my new invention." Subaru was smirking while showing the object named lighter within his hand.
"Subaru, May I say I'm honored for you to consider me close enough to show an invention first hand. Still, I must ask why you called us here." I was still curious about his intentions.
"I mean… you answered it yourself. You two are the closest friends I have in the city, and I wanted to show it to you two." That made sense… I must put in a similar effort to our friendship then.
"Anyway, I will show the interesting part later. First, the simple and the actual reason."
He opened the device, and there seemed to be a smaller opening with a cylinder put through and small holes at its side while the top was left open. As Subaru pushed the highest of the fourth discs, a small kindle fire appeared on top of the said cylinder.
"This is the lowest setting. Well, this is basically an intensified version of extremely small leakage from a fire mana crystal. Since fire affinity is about the temperature in general, leakage from the mana crystal only causes mana to heat up. I just added a part to intensify this to a higher level of my choosing. Well… the most important piece is Ros-chi's design, I just added more stuff to it since mana circuitry seemed simple enough." There was a metia similar to this before, but this is a serious improvement to it if I understood it correctly. I wonder who this Ros-chi person is…
"Subaru, you should stop calling Margrave Roswaal by that name. It might get you into trouble." Reinhard was looking at Subaru with eyes full of concern. I was actually more focused on what he just stated.
"Subaru, May I ask why the Country's Greatest Magician is aiding you, and why do you call him by that name?" I was locked at Subaru, curious about his answer.
"He is a good guy; that's why. Well, according to him, he prefers me to call him like that… but it might be just for private settings." Nation's greatest magician aiding someone out of the goodness of their heart seemed suspicious to me, but that's something I should avoid.
"Now, let me show the setting two." Subaru still seemed excited to show what he had in mind. Well, there was not much in setting two. The kindled fire just grew bigger.
"Now, let me show you the fun stuff." His face was that of an excited kid about to show something to his father.
Subaru walked away from us further and directed the lighter away from us both while staying at an angle that enabled us to see the lighter. He forcefully pushed the fourth disk and then pressed the third disk.
The moment he pressed the third disc, a flurry of fire started to throw itself out of the lighter for five seconds before it seemed to run out of mana. When I looked towards Reinhard to see his reaction, I was taken aback. It was a mixture of worry and a blank stare that engraved itself into the soul of anyone who was targeted by it.
"Subaru, when did you do this, and did Margrave teach you how to do it?" His voice was gentle sounding but devoid of any emotions.
"Ahh… This? Yeah, I added these parts myself. Ros-ch… I mean, Margrave Roswaal. The mana circuitry seemed simple enough, so I made my own additions. Still, maybe this is why Ros-chi sent a simple one." Subaru didn't seem to be bothered by Reinhard's tone or expression.
"You could've hurt yourself with that." Reinhard's tone was more concerned than before.
"But I didn't."
"Subaru… Could you wait for me at the lounge of the garrison?" Reinhard's request seemed specific.
"Sure, I guess? Are you two going to talk about something private?" He seemed perplexed by Reinhard's proposition.
Subaru got his toolset from the ground and started to walk towards the gates, murmuring something I couldn't hear. Reinhard and I watched as he left the training grounds, leaving us two alone. After he left, Reinhard turned towards me with his casual expression.
"Julius, May I ask a few questions?" His tone was full of worry more than anything else.
"I will answer them with the best of my abilities" I was in wonder of what was going on between him and his brother.
"While even knowing it's selfish of me, I can't stop myself from asking, is there a way for Subaru to stay in the capital rather than go on patrol?" I was shocked by what he was asking.
"Reinhard, with all due respect, what you are asking is something I won't even make a comment on. We should know the importance of duty and set an example for the ones below us. Wouldn't it be disgraceful if we ever used the authority that was given to us in such a context?" Reinhard was the person I looked up to all these years and still do. I truly wonder if there is a reason for his words.
"It was… shameful for me to ask something this peculiar. My sincerest apologies." Reinhard seemed regretful of his words but still didn't seem convinced. I must be hopeful he does in the end.
My eyes twitched when I saw someone on the guest list of my accolade. It was Russell Fellow, also known as the slimmest person I've met in my short life. I was still ashamed by our first encounter and him catching me off guard but never again.
This time, I will be the one that surprises him. It's going to be a fairly big party, so he would probably make deals with someone. Still, making assumptions just because he would be here is too mu… never mind. That's what he would want me to think.
I should think multidimensionally against Russell; do something he couldn't conceive or even imagine. Still, it should be something that is shrouded in mystery and aids me to learn about his plan. I should get close to Russell and learn about what he would do…
"-You are planning to do something so moronic, I can feel it.-" It seems like my emotions started to influence Kage as well through our bond.
"-Define moronic.-" I got up from the desk I was sitting at and looked at the floating black spirit beside me with conviction. It takes two to dance, Kage.
"-Actions that defy common sense.-" What's she talking about?
"-Tell me the last time common sense stopped me from doing something.-" I could swear she was sulking, which was impressive considering she had no physical body… yet. Od forbids what kind of body she will choose.
"-Sigh...I will just enjoy the show then… Hey, where are you going?-"
"-Come, Kage. We need to buy a black wig. I have a plan.-"
"-Subaru...nooo.-" She begrudgingly followed me as I made my way outside the mansion to the merchant's street.
I was helping my wife greet newcomers for Subaru's accolade. Despite years taking her youth away, I could still see the smile of a woman I love. Sadly, her smile has a small hint of worry I could guess the reason for.
Carol does not have good memories of the last accolade she attended. I'm sure she would get over it today; Subaru is an adult now, and he would avoid such things in his own accolade. I looked around to make sure nothing was wrong before I moved on to my next duty.
The walls of the mansion were decorated with banners carrying the insignia of the Astrea House. Mansion grounds were re-purposed to accommodate guests more than anything else. The ballroom, which could be described as grandiose, was full of important figures in the capital. Because of that, everything had to be at peak quality. While gold was the original theme that's used within the capital nowadays, Subaru insisted on silver. Normally, he doesn't care about such stuff, so I still find it quite interesting.
"Do you think he will do something again?" Carol needs to calm down.
"I...don't…think...so." Why is everyone forcing me to talk in long sentences?
"I hope so. Dear, are you sure you want to be a bartender? I could get a servant to tend to it."
"I...will" I don't remember when, but I remember someone telling me I should try my desires at least once in my life. Well, I tried blocking an -Al Jiwald and it worked. Now, I want to be a bartender.
I will wait until Subaru gives his oath, and then I will try out my new desire.
I watched as my brother walked in the carpeted red velvet, and walked towards the raised platform where I was standing with my ceremonial clothes to give his oath of fealty to the kingdom. I observed the crowds as he walked forwards to see familiar faces and missing ones. It seems like Subaru's maid friends were here but not their master. It seemed like Julius decided to join Subaru's accolade as well.
It shouldn't be surprising since accolades within the capital usually attracted nobles simply for the occasion of interaction, but I know Julius is there because of personal relations rather than simple gestures. My attention turned back towards my brother as he finally reached the platform and knelt just before the steps, presenting his sword towards me.
Usually, this is done by the commander of the unit the knight has been placed into or the leader of the house the knight belonged to. My father did mine, but I selfishly insisted on doing it myself. Still, I had to constantly practice for a week to make sure I wouldn't accidentally use more force than needed. Having to work for a simple social maneuver feels lonely, but it's what I deserve.
I walked towards the edge of the steps as well and ceremonially accepted his sword. As I unsheathed the sword and raised it towards the sky, the steel of the blade glinted with a faint blue light. I used my entire focus to make sure I lowered the sword slowly enough to place it on Subaru's right shoulder and started his oath of fealty.
"Natsuki Subaru Astrea, member of the House of Astrea, Do you promise on your honor, on your blood, and on the Divine Dragon that you will in the future be faithful to the kingdom?" I held the sword in the intended position as I waited for my brother to speak.
"I, Natsuki Subaru Astrea, member of the House of Astrea, promise on my honor, on my blood, and on the divine dragon that I will in the future be faithful to the kingdom."
I raised the sword from his right shoulder and ceremoniously raised it above my head to point it towards the sky and then lowered it to Subaru's left shoulder.
"Natsuki Subaru Astrea, member of the House of Astrea, Do you promise on your honor, on your blood, and on the Divine Dragon that you will in the future be the sword of the kingdom?" This was the final position that required contact; thankfully, everything went well as expected.
"I, Natsuki Subaru Astrea, member of the House of Astrea, promise on my honor, on my blood, and on the divine dragon that I will in the future be the sword of the kingdom."
I raised the sword from his left shoulder and ceremoniously raised it above my head to point it towards the sky, only this time to keep it there for the final part. Subaru raised his head from its position and looked at me to signify the last part of the oath.
"Natsuki Subaru Astrea, member of the House of Astrea, Do you promise on your honor, on your blood, and on the Divine Dragon that you will uphold the codes of chivalry, guard the ones in need, and uphold your oaths until the end of your days?" I watched as my brother said his last words before becoming a knight.
"I, Natsuki Subaru Astrea, member of the House of Astrea, promise on my honor, on my blood, and on the Divine Dragon that I will uphold the codes of chivalry, guard the ones in need, and uphold my oaths until the end of days whether it be by the sword or the fate itself."
I raised the sheath of the sword within my hands to my torso and ceremoniously sheathed the sword. My brother raised his hands as I presented his sword back to him. I waited until he got up from his place and walked up to the steps of the platform to stand beside me. I turned towards the crowds to make the final announcement.
"I hereby present to you the newest knight of our kingdom."
As the guests clapped, I heard Subaru whispering something for me to hear.
"Why were you so rough with the sword?" Well, it was to be expected.
"I have trouble controlling my strength as you know, my apologies." Maybe I should've been less selfish and let the intended commander or my father do it.
"No need, Rein. But next time, I want a lady who is a mix of hot and cute." He has… particular tastes.
"The only oath you have left is marriage, Subaru." A brotherly teasing never hurt anyone.
"Please don't remind that to Auntie."
I'm happy that I only have to bother once with this accolade stuff, because god it's tiring. Greetings, wishes of good luck, offers, one reverence after another… it feels artificial. Nothing out of sincerity or just because they feel like that. I know one can say it's courtesy, but it feels more like a cheap show to me. All the nobles here are just an act and a pretext about what's wrong with them. None of them are...unique or their own to me. As I was deep in my thoughts, my father whispered something in my ear.
"Did you choose?" Heh?
"Choose what?" I'm confused… what should I choose?
"It should be who, son. Who are you going to dance with? You and your partner have to do the first turn alone; there isn't much time left" I immediately became frozen in my place, dumbfounded.
"Why has no one ever bothered to tell me that?! I'm not my brother, where the hell am I going to find someone to dance with?" Well...fuck.
"Son, you walk up to a lady and ask her hand in dance while acting like a gentleman. It's not complicated court politics." I wonder if it is too late for me to jump out of the window, but we are on the first floor.
"-A pink-haired lady is walking towards you. Just ask her and be done with it.-" Is it Ram? I'm sure if I ever tried something like that my decapitated head would hit the floor before I could finish the sentence. Wait… Rem is also here.
Before I could finish my thoughts, I felt someone tapping my shoulder. I turned around to see Ram looking at me with her usual bored glance.
"Barusu, now listen to me as your life depends on it because it is. Now, when you go and ask Rem to dance, be very gentle and caring to make sure Ram's sister remembers this experience with a smile. Am I clear with you?" I know she sometimes uses a somewhat threatening tone in her occasional letters, but right now, my body was in terror like I was facing someone stronger than the Divine Dragon itself. Well… I don't know if Ram is even close to me, but I won't test her to find out.
"-I like her.-" Kage, are you sure you are on my team?
Even my father standing beside us did not intervene. I think that my father thinks Ram is joking, but I am not sure. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned is a saying I truly believe in. Well, I know how to dance thanks to awkward lessons given by Haruo after his accolade incident. Still, I have no idea how to offer someone to dance.
Well, my brother forgot that part. Probably because he thought I never would've, and he is right. Still, It would be rude to make her wait.
As I somewhat awkwardly looked around me to find where Rem is, Ram tapped my shoulder again. I turned expecting a new threat only for her to put her hand over my hair and let it down from its combed position. She walked behind a step to take a look.
"Hah… Barusu might be passable as a man now. You should be in your best state while dancing with Ram's sister." I will take my revenge later on you, Ram.
As my eyes found Rem's location, I walked towards her with an awkward feeling. I mean, I wasn't planning to ask anyone to dance, and I don't want to but might as well do it. I was feeling people's gaze turn on me as I walked towards the place where high-ranking nobles- especially ladies- sit. Normally, Ros-chi would be there, but it seems like he had a last-minute emergency to attend to. I walked towards the table he was supposed to be at.
"Subaru, may I have a moment of yours?" The voice was more than enough to recognize its owner.
"Teach!? I wasn't expecting to see you." I do remember him saying we would meet again, but frankly, I thought he would be resting at his home rather than coming to my accolade.
"It would be quite rude of me to miss such a moment. Still, I'm getting quite old for this kind of gathering. Sadly, I will take my leave after our small talk." Well… Teach is quite old, so I can't really blame him.
"-I'm surprised they let in an idiot like you, Subaru.-" It's not hard to guess what Regen will say.
"-Regen, when are you going to mature? You are in your thirties already. Hey Subaru, it seems like life is going fine for you considering the blue-haired lady staring at you.-" Well, I was halfway there before I turned back to talk with Teach.
"Be more confident, Subaru. It's not hard to see you are tense and stressed. Calm down and be yourself. Well… the self who was my protege, not the one who builds bombs as a past bedtime hobby." Teach did make a valid point but there was one issue with it.
"Why are you telling that to me, Teach?"
"It looks like you are in dire need of it, Subaru. Anyway, I won't take your time any longer; also, it's rude to make a lady wait." His mouth formed a fatherly smile as he finished his talk, probably knowing his spirits would have something to add.
"-Subaru, don't act like a fool and be confident. Here, is it mature enough for you, Strum?-" Regen seems pissed at Strum for his earlier comment.
"-Regen… I will deal with you later. As Helmuth said to Subaru, it's rude to make a lady wait, but I want to say one thing before we leave: be wary of strangers. You are in a new stage within your life now." I don't understand why Strum said something so obvious, but he is probably talking out of his life experience.
Teach and I exchanged our goodbyes as he turned back and readied to leave. Surprisingly, Teach did something I'd never seen from him before he left. He looked over my shoulder at something behind me and looked back to wink at me before turning his back and continuing towards the door.
Well, Rem is in front of me, and I'm sure Ram is watching me from somewhere. Okay Subaru, act with manners… There are actually approximately forty-two meters between me and the window… no, be a man for once. I walked next to the chair she was sitting at and held out my right hand forward while bending my left to my back.
"May I have this dance?" My throat was swollen a bit since I'm not used to offering such things. Well, I should thank Juli for those lessons in manners.
She looked at me and giggled for a moment before speaking.
"Rem thinks you need to be more daring next time, Subaru" Daring? I wonder what's going on from her side of things. Her cheeks also blushed … I hope I didn't do something embarrassing.
She grasped my hand and got up from her seat. I was still feeling anxious as we walked towards the middle of the ballroom where a wide circular area was left empty for the purpose of our dance, but I was hoping I would be able to avoid this.
I should apologize to Rem for dragging her into this after all of this is over. We walked towards the dance grounds which is the closest part to the platform where I gave my oath of fealty. We separated our hands to take a stance. I heard the orchestra start playing to signify us beginning our first tour and earning us a lot of gazes from others…
I will get back at you after this, father. I took her left hand and extended our now combined hand outwards while putting my right hand behind her upper back to avoid any situations.
"Subaru-kun, Rem thinks your hand should be lower to dance properly." Well, it seems like she knows how to dance; it's normal for her to ask for the normal position.
I lowered my hand slightly behind her back which was left exposed by the dress she was wearing, wishing the awkwardness would be over. Sadly, it seems like I can't even remember the lessons my brother gave me since Rem had to readjust my hand to be a bit lower before putting her right hand on my shoulder; thus, beginning our dance.
It was a simple Ballroom Waltz, so it wasn't hard to do. It's a smooth dance, traveling around the line of dance, perfect for going around a circular dance ground. I don't know how to feel about the obscure knowledge my brother stuffed my brain with.
As we started our dance, I asked Kage to give me info about what was happening around us. I made sure to keep eye contact with Rem to not look any weirder. I dragged her into this, might as well dance properly while at it.
"-Ummm… Subaru, you might want to find Rein after this is all over. The pink-haired maid looked at you like she was planning your demise… or she looks happy. I can't really tell her emotions.-"
"-Have you seen the Russell Fellow guy I told you about?-" I was wondering where that guy was.
"-He...emmm… blonde is quite common among these people, hold on. He had a goatee, right?-" Well, that's one way to put it.
"-Yes, he has one. Tell me when you find him and make sure to don't go near him. I don't know if he has spirit affinity or not.-"
"-Ok-kay, detective Kage is on the case.-" I shouldn't have mentioned Sherlock Holmes to her.
As we reached the first quarter, we did the first underarm turn and gazed into each other's eyes once more. I don't know if I did something wrong because Rem avoided eye contact for a brief moment before looking back at me. Did I do something wrong? I need to study more to fix that.
"-I didn't think my contractor was such a dancer. Do you want to teach me later after I gain a form?-"
"-Wouldn't that take a decade at best?-" Even Kage is mocking me right now, great.
"-After that?-"
"-Stop mocking me, Kage.-"
"- You are an idiot.-"
"-What was that?-"
"-Focus on the girl in front of you, idiot.-"
I realized we were halfway through our tour, and I almost missed my mark. We did an underarm turn and Rem's face started to look weird. She was blushing and avoiding eye contact. I mean, she looked cute, but I think I embarrassed her by dragging her into this. Way to go Subaru… way to go. Maybe I was staring at her too much like a creep, so I decided to check how she was before doing anything else.
"Rem, are you doing fine so far?" She looked at me with a rather embarrassed look...I'm such a fucking buffoon.
"Rem's fine, Subaru-kun. You are teasing Rem too much." Does she think I made fun of her?… Auntie might be onto something about Astrea men being lost causes. It seems like adoption does not mean I'm immune to this curse.
During our conversation, it seems like we reached the third quarter of the dance; we did an underarm turn one more time and continued our dance. I was feeling tense as the end was at the horizon. While I wasn't worried about the dance, I was worried about how to execute my plan.
It's been a while since I became Natsumi Schwartz. Thankfully, I'm still able to do my androgynous voice, but some people know my act. I don't know about Haruo's exact range, but according to him, his divine protections have trouble recognizing Natsumi Schwartz from their original range; though if I get too close, they will. I still wonder why other disguises don't do the same. We experimented on this, but all of them were the same as the normal me if not easier to catch.
Sadly, even without his DP's, I don't think he would have trouble recognizing Natsumi. Then there was the Auntie problem; she definitely will know it's me the moment she set eyes on Natsumi Schwartz. My original plan was to use the dress of my grandma I have never met, but it seems like I got too tall for it, so I had to buy a new dress. It somewhat scares me that I'm quite skilled at thinking of female dress designs on the run.
First, I must find a way to get close while making sure to avoid people who can see through my disguise. Ok-kay, time to make a list. My brother, Auntie, and Ram would immediately see through it. My father, uncle, and Rem would see through it if I stood near them for more than a brief moment. I should do it in a short time so as not to raise any suspicions.
I felt Rem stop as we reached our beginning point. The orchestra also changed the music to signal other nobles to join and start their dance. I don't know if we should continue, but I dragged Rem into enough of my troubles. It seems like Rem also thought the same as she let her left hand go and looked at me.
"Rem thanks you, Subaru-kun! Emm...Could you let Rem go, as well… It's being too much on poor Rem." I...uh...I wonder if there is a ranking of how idiot each Astrea is. I'm sure I'm in the second place, right behind Wilhelm, also known as mister how to traumatize my grandchild permanently.
I immediately let my hand go from her lower back and looked at her. I didn't know what to say after dragging her into this, so I waited for her to continue before saying anything. It seems like she hoped for the same and looked down, breaking eye contact because of the awkward silence.
"Rem needs to… talk with her nee-sama, Subaru-kun. Rem will find you later." She immediately took off after that.
I looked behind her for a moment before finally getting an answer from Kage.
"-Found him. He is two tables left of the bar.-" For someone who can fly and invisible, she is really slow.
"-What took you so long?-"
"-I was observing and listening to life lessons from your uncle.-" Huh? He can barely speak. I know he is at the bar, but what the hell is going on over there?
I looked towards where the bar should be and saw quite a lot of people gathered there. Usually, people just order their drinks at their table from servants. But somehow, Uncle Grimm managed to gather a crowd at the bar stall. How does he do it while he can't even talk? Anyway, I should start the execution of my plan. I started to walk towards the ballroom's exit like I was planning to take some fresh air.
I, Mary Fenne, have the right to know the truth about what's going on between these two knights. I saw the black-haired one, Natsuki Subaru Astrea, buying a dress, and I want to know who it was for.
He did dance with a lady, which was disappointing for me to say the least, but it seems like the dress wasn't for her since she was much shorter than what the dress looked like, and Natsuki Subaru Astrea just left the ballroom after the two got separated.
Does this guy play with everyone's heart within his reach? I must know if this is the case. I slowly followed him out of the ballroom to see him stand in the hall, right between the path to upstairs and the entrance. He looked at both sides for a moment and then started to climb to the next floor.
He acts like he is hiding something; I wonder what it is.
I slowly walked towards where he stood to see where he went next. He stood at the top of the stairs and looked at both sides again before entering a room. It was just in front of the stairs, so I could see the door before going upstairs. It's best I wait for him to come out.
…
"It's been five minutes now… What are you even doing there?" Where is he?
My wait was finally over as I watched the door open again and a… lady came out. Where did she come from? I stayed at my current place, next to a wall as she walked down the stairs with a regal aura I've never seen before.
If there wasn't any nobility to speak of, this lady would still be called noble blood. Her looks were otherworldly compared to others. I do like to entertain the thought that I'm one of the fairest ladies of the kingdom, but even I cannot deny this lady is superior to anyone I've ever seen. Even Elena falls short compared to her.
Her hair was as black as the night sky while her sharp eyes radiated her intelligence and determination compared to others who dared to look at her brown eyes. It was clear her body was toned but not much to make her look too muscled.
Even her dress perfectly complemented her toned body. It was a tight black dress with a chest window that had a simple butterfly motif with just the outlines of it made by black threads.
Her neck warmer was also the same color as her dress and hair, black as the night sky, wide enough to cover her shoulders and hide the connection between the dress and her arms. Her gloves were also the same color as the dress, and fit the dress so well, I'm not sure if it's part of the dress or not.
She also had a white fur scarf that was long enough to form a loose bridge between both of her elbows behind her back and still have half of it left enough to hang on from both sides of her elbows. It almost looked like her own aura of gracefulness took form and decided to join her image.
I was still staring directly at her as she walked down the last steps of the stairs and walked towards me. When we got on the same level, I also realized she was fairly tall. Looking at her feels...humiliating. Is it too much for me to wish I looked better than her? I couldn't even arrange my thoughts as she walked towards me to speak.
"May I say I couldn't notice a fair lady like yourself observing mine self's visage with a remarkable focus enough to send shivers through mine self's gentle soul." Her voice was androgynous but beautiful and gentle like it couldn't choose how to be the best of itself to accommodate its owner. Is she here just to mock us?
"May I say my lady that mine self is allowed to look anywhere…" I couldn't finish my sentence as a closed black hand fan was placed on top of my lips and her eyes were staring deep in my soul, sending a shiver within me. She immediately removed the fan after I stopped talking and continued her smile before she talked.
"Dear, please do not twist your precocious visage in such wrath that would do injustice to its fair beauty that inspires onlookers. Ladies such as us should acknowledge these facts better than others."
She then slightly bent over towards my ear before continuing her talk.
"I must be pressing about this fact as a lady; I still do not entertain the thought of being mocked on no basis." Her gentle-sounding voice was colder but still beautiful in a more cold threatening way.
She then returned to her normal, graceful posture like it's been perfected to suit her. She gave me one more gentle smile combined with her sharp looks and turned sideways to walk towards the ballroom. I still couldn't help myself from asking one final question before she left.
"Ma..May I ask your name, Lady…?" I'm angry at myself because of my voice's betrayal. I wasn't feeling intimidated by gentle-sounding her threats, since my family had more than enough influence to protect its members from almost anyone, but her personal aura was enough to capture whoever stood in her way. I must know who this woman is before asking my family to gather information on her.
"You should consider yourself blessed to the highest extent as I, Natsumi Schwartz, will let you know about herself. Embed this moment to your memories as it shall not be told again until you truly strive for it." Her voice now felt presumptuous but regal.
She gracefully continued her walk towards the ballroom's door. The door got opened by the guards and servants themselves, who also were staring at her like a goddess that came down from the heavens to bestow us with her grace. I still felt an unexplainable shiver in my legs. It might be best to ask Elena about it. I also started to walk towards the ballroom at a slower pace, wishing to stay away from her.
As the holder of the title of the Greatest Knight, I should display exemplary conduct to all knights in this accolade as much as I can. Currently, I was observing to choose which lady to offer my hand in the dance. Normally, I would do so to aid ladies who got unlucky because of peculiar situations.
Currently, it seems to be quite lucky for all as there was someone at the drink stall to aid them. I did recognize the renowned war hero, Grimm Frauzen, and his wife, Carol Remedies, who was also a renowned war hero of the demi-human war. It seems like they became an attraction that earned the attention of the honorable wise sage council members, Sage Bordeaux and Sage Mikeltov.
I could also see the known General Helmuth in the background. I must say, I'm tempted to go talk with them and take notes about their memories. It would be a shame to not do anything while being in the same room as such important individuals. I decided to go and interact with them before witnessing a lady enter the room much later after the dance had already started.
While I must admit her beauty was enough to make anyone gaze towards her with overflowing envy, I was more surprised it managed to get Reinhard's attention as well. He walked towards the lady, who was gracefully walking in the direction of the drink stall.
It seems like they are talking about something peculiar since Reinhard's normally collected-looking features are showing slight confusion while the lady seemed tense. Normally, a gentleman must respect boundaries in these situations, but I don't usually see Reinhard showing emotions and I'm worried about my friend's peculiar situation.
The lady also seemed oddly familiar. I couldn't help the feeling of familiarity looking at her. If the situation allows it, I should ask about this particular subject as well. I walked towards them as it seemed like their conversation was more akin to a calm talk rather than an argument as my first guess.
"Sir Reinhard, I must admit your insistence does touch upon fair points, but may I…" She stopped the moment she noticed me and gazed towards me with her sharp eyes, radiating a noble feeling.
"Sincerely, correct me if I may be on wrong assumptions, but am I bestowed with the pleasure of meeting Sir Julius?" It seemed like she heard about me. I'm surprised by her voice, which was a mix of feminine beauty and an androgynous one as it was in an attempt to find perfection to suit its master.
"The pleasure is mine, my lady. May I be in the pleasure of being bestowed with your name?" Maybe her name would ring a bell to this familiar feeling.
She opened the black fan she was holding in her hands and hid her mouth with it rather than answering my question. I wonder if I was too forceful or presumptuous in my tone. It would be quite shameful of me to worry a lady; I must apologize if I caused any unwanted worries.
"I must say if I caused any…" I couldn't finish my sentence as a closed black fan was over my lips and a lady was gazing directly at my eyes while her face carried a confident smile.
"If I may, Sir Julius, you should learn to empathize with a lady standing in between two charming knights. It has been quite challenging for my maidenly heart. Still, I, Natsumi Schwartz, give you the honor of bestowing my name to a knight such as yourself" She was looking at me with a mix of understanding and a mischievous look. I also turned towards Reinhard to see if he had any issues with my currently poor conduct.
"Reinhard, I must say I'm truly sorry if I interjected an important matter at hand." While my true intentions were to aid a friend, I must confess the matter got out of my hand.
"There is no matter of concern, Julius." Reinhard's eyes were still going in between me and Lady Natsumi. It seems like Lady Natsumi had her intentions to state since they also looked between each other and she talked.
"I must say Sir Reinhard is a dear friend of mine. I can even remember when we danced at his accolade. I was a much younger lady… much less confident. I'm still thankful for the day he helped me realize who I am. Still, our bond is more akin to a sister and brother rather than anything else. He still aids me from time to time." These are rather private details about her. I do wonder why someone like her would talk about her past to someone who she just met.
"I must say, I'm surprised and happy to see you are comfortable to share such a rather private detail about yourself, my lady."
"Sir Julius, my apologies but I must point out the fact that you are mistaken. Firstly, you still seem to not empathize with the precocious pressure I'm under. Secondly, it's not for a gentleman such as yourself to interject at our talk and overwhelm mine hand-fan with your charms. If I may say so myself, I'm quite infuriated." She started to fan herself with her black fan while looking directly at me with her sharp eyes.
"Our conversation was already at its end, Lady Schwartz. I don't think we should consider it an interjection." Reinhard was doing his best to aid my peculiar situation, but sadly, I agree with Lady Natsumi. It was very unlike of me to do such an action.
"I digress, Reinhard. I'm a benevolent lady, so I will let this situation go under one condition."
She presented her hand towards me, looking at my eyes with looks filled with nobility and intelligence shining through those sharp brown eyes of her.
"May I ask for your hand in a dance? Please, don't pressure yourself into accepting it." Her offer was captivating, to say the least.
"My lady, I must say your intelligence rivals even your fair looks. It's a cunning way to ask a gentleman's hand in a dance." Her intelligence makes me wonder, to say the least. She did calculate Reinhard would recognize her and come to greet her. After that, she had to make the situation look tense enough for an intermediary to arrive. I'm not sure how she made sure I would be the one to come. I do not think I could've figured even the current amount I did if I hadn't read about a similar situation before.
"fu...fu...fu. Impressive, Sir Julius. I rarely meet a gentleman who can see what's happening to them. Sadly, it seems like I've failed to get your hand for a dance."
She opened her hand-fan again and hid her mouth with it, looking the other way. She was also about to lower her hand until I gently grasped it, slowly bending forwards to kiss her hand. She closed her hand fan and looked at me with a surprised expression which quickly turned into the same regal one.
"May I be presumptuous enough to ask your hand into a dance, Lady Schwartz?"
"I would be glad to."
"It's an honor to dance with a lady as fair as you are."
I must say it's hard not to get captivated by her regal aura.
I know it's rude to be happy your friend left you alone for a brief time, but I felt relaxed and calm before Mary came back looking all confused and panicked.
"Elena, may I ask a moment of yours?"
"Mary, cut the pleasantries while it's only us. Did you find out what you were looking for?" Mary developed this strange fixation on the relationship between Sir Julius and Sir Subaru. I do know the junior of the two was tasked to aid the other for a month, possibly to ease the transition of becoming a new officer.
Our bond might be the only reason I'm not ridiculing Mary's actions right now. She was a romantic at heart, and I respect that since I myself am one as well, but sometimes, she felt more lustful rather than romantic.
I decided to get rid of these needless thoughts as I acted like I listened to Mary while watching partners still dancing in the middle of the ballroom. It seems like most people were focused on a couple, but I can't clearly see whom they were looking at from where my seat is.
Mary seemed to realize I wasn't listening, so she thought the best action would be to pinch my arm and say what I hoped would be her final sentence after that.
"OUCH! What was that for?" I'm seriously considering if I should do something in return, but Mary is quite fragile compared to me, and I don't want to hurt her
"… he bought a black dress from a shop and then entered a room in the mansion. After that, I ran into a … Hey, this is the lady I was talking about, the one dancing with Sir Julius."
As I turned my attention towards the dance grounds, the looks of a certain woman captivated me. I was always fond of black as a color since it reminded me of the night sky I used to gaze at when maids told me my father was busy in his room and wouldn't be able to tell me stories like he used to do when I was little. Stars itself always felt like a companion, and there she was like the night sky decided to take form and become a lady. She also seemed to be fairly skilled at tango since she had no trouble keeping up with Sir Julius who also seemed to be quite experienced. It was captivating to watch those two in their own world and rhythm, above everybody else in the ball. It seems like Mary thought the same thing as she asked me a question.
"Elena, Did you meet with Sir Julius before?"
"Danced with him once. Charming, but too formal for me."
"How about her, I know you…" I don't know if the calm feeling I had sharing my secret with Mary was worth all these comments… No, it was worth it.
"Mary, could you not?"
"I'm sorry, I just want you to have someone to talk to other than me." Here we go again…
I started to walk towards the drink stall. Mary was walking behind my back to ask what she did wrong. I need a drink to calm down, Mary; that's the issue.
I could barely contain my laughter as I figured out why my gut feeling told me to stand right next to the ballroom's door to wait for someone. I actually should watch out for it, laughing too hard might make me collapse, and I'm not sure if I would be able to get up after it happens.
I usually have this feeling for situations rather differently than this particular one, but it was worth listening to it. I somewhat recognized the person who was walking towards me after their legendary dance. I still don't think I could've recognized him if he didn't directly look at me and had to hide his chuckle behind the black fan he was holding.
"Tried to hide" would be a better word since he still couldn't hide his smirk while walking towards me. He stopped when there was only a small distance between us and did a lady's curtsy, fitting his current disguise.
"Natsumi Schwartz is at your service, my liege… or should I say my majesty?" Well… I did follow a particular knight's example to create happy memories. Still, being here alone is exhausting, and I'm only able to stand because of Felix's constant healing.
I was also in a tight red dress with a fake flower that was a mix of red and yellow on its shoulder that looked like its stalk was going around the dress. I do think I look quite fair for a lady and gave Crusch a memory she would have a hard time forgetting. I could say the dress reached its purpose if it gave them a happy memory to remember me by.
"Still, I must say Lady Schwartz, your beauty is one of a kind. May I ask the reason for your current… attire choice?" He looked at me with a grim smile for a moment before answering.
"I was planning to eavesdrop on a certain merchant, but after I got close to him in the dance, it turned out he was just here to talk about a simple trade deal… All this effort was for nothing." Well, it wasn't for nothing. I still have something to laugh about in the upcoming days.
"I must point out you did also give Sir Julius quite the memory. I'm impressed by your wide range of… particular skills. Seduction, dance, and disguise; it's a rather unique skill set. You do have quite a regal aura even I can't replicate and that's coming from the prince himself." Also, enough skills to dress as a woman might give Felix confidence issues.
He did one more lady's curtsy before looking at me with a rather worried expression.
"My liege, if you may, I need to leave. If you have seen through my disguise, I might also get into big trouble."
"Well, you made it quite obvious while looking at my… fair looks." I wanted to turn around me to joke about it, but I'm barely standing right now and can't last much longer if we keep this conversation any longer. It's probably been six minutes since I was away from Felix's healing… I probably only have another six to spare at best.
"I must admit I never had a good idea about nobles, but you, my liege… I would be happy to serve you." I'm quite unlucky that I only find talented people to serve.
Still… I could feel my body being ravaged by the disease each passing day. Even Felix's magic is only prolonging what's inevitable. This two-time talk relationship is not going to be a lasting one. I do want to protect people beneath my rank, but I do not know what would favor the future that I want, and sadly, I can't see one with me in it.
I do have a gut feeling about what to do, but it might be my most absurd idea so far. Natsuki Subaru Astrea was still looking at me, waiting for an answer while dressed as a woman that could give anyone second doubts about themselves. Should I follow this one as well? What do I even have to lose?
"Subaru, you said you wouldn't mind serving someone like me, correct?"
"Yes, my liege? I don't feel like you are faking who you are; this is why I respect you." That's a rather strange standard, but sure, whatever standard makes him happy.
"Then I will ask you to help someone I want; in exchange, I…"
"Then I refuse unless it's an order, my liege" Well… I'm off to a great start.
"I must insist on a better explanation." Two men dressed as females, negotiating something… I might make a joke about this to Crusch later on.
"I said I would serve you because you act your real self, unlike other nobles. I don't think it's a good sign if you are offering me something in exchange." It seems to be a misunderstanding then. He should learn to listen until an offer ends. I'm still having second thoughts about my gut feeling. I only met him two times which makes it hard for me to entrust such an important task to him.
"I will ask you to protect someone and people close to them. This is rather a long order, so I want to offer something in exchange." Making sure he has an incentive to follow a dead man's offer is the most I can do without risking it backfiring.
"May I ask, why me and not my brother? I mean, whatever is in your mind, he could easily do it." I do wonder why, but I'm not going to judge. Currently, I'm a man on his last straw, and this situation doesn't have any risks for anyone included even if it doesn't work.
"Let's just say a gut feeling of mine says you are better suited for the job than your brother."
"Can I learn whom I am supposed to protect, my liege?" Directly telling him her name might make him reconsider my current offer since they barely know one another.
"Tell me first, do you have any needs or desires in exchange?" I need to be sure. I can feel my legs begging me to sit or lay somewhere.
"I need a ground dragon, but I can buy it myself, and I don't want to do something that important just because I was given something in exchange. May I say add this, then, I will only do things I can if I believe that person is someone who is good and worth it. I know it's too presumptuous to ask something like that, but I still don't know whom you want me to protect." This does present a good opportunity for me. Still, it's somewhat ironic for someone living in Flanders trying to find a ground dragon at the capital.
"Very well, I accept your terms. You will know who you need to protect after they gift you a ground dragon. You must not let the person in question know about our little deal, understood? I will make sure to be there while this event happens." Having to end a conversation in such a forceful manner seemed very abrupt, but I didn't have the energy to walk back, let alone stay here very long.
"I mean if you insist…"
"I do. Subaru, please let me know if you have second thoughts about this, and I must return to my seat now since I can barely even stand." It's hard to admit such a fact out loud, but I can barely resist right now.
"My apologies. If you want me to, I can help you get into your seat."
"Subaru, do you want me to go to my seat while having a foreign, fair-looking lady in my arms?" Might as well finish where I am.
"As you say, my liege. I must also change into a more proper attire now. I wish you a quick recovery.
I decided to gather my energy for a short but arduous walk as I watched him leave the ballroom. I don't know what the future holds and I haven't risked anything, but I do hope it was worth following this gut feeling.
It was my responsibility to ensure Subaru got the proper punishment for his actions today. As I sat with Julius at the bar stand after his dance with Lady Schwartz... my younger brother... we were talking about things. My guilt over what happened to Julius was strong, but he wasn't aware of the full picture and I should make sure that remained the case.
In our current peculiar situation, Julius was frankly too well-read for his sake, and I got into situations where I was forced to tell lies both for his and Subaru's sake. Hence my disappointment at the moment. Apparently, Aunt Carol also realized who Julius was dancing with and left Uncle Grimm's side who was currently working as a barman.
I witnessed him giving countless life advice, and he was currently attempting to aid Julius as well as a lady sitting on the opposite side of the stall. Even though Julius wasn't love-struck or desperate, he seemed impressed and touched by what he saw. 'Natsumi Schwartz' story of being adopted as an illegitimate child and having a tough time adjusting to her family while having an overprotective father made him seem quite sad.
Although Subaru was able to make life stories on the spot, manipulation is not a skill he should rely on or use except as a last resort. This was especially true for friends. She'd take care of it, I'm certain. Subaru was probably talking with Aunt Carol at the moment, while our father is occupied with his court business. Only I remain to provide companionship to Julius. Who was on the verge of finding out the truth?
"Reinhard, may I ask if you ever heard of a noble house called 'Schwartz'. I memorized all the noble houses in our kingdom and the important ones of our neighbors, but I cannot recall any noble house with such a name." Telling it was Vollachian would be risky, considering our relationship. It seems that Lady Schwartz mentioned a small power struggle to maintain her position in the Schwartz family. In light of Lady Schwartz's hair color, Gusteko might be a good choice.
"She comes from a minor noble house in Gusteko. It's fair to say the family has minimal influence on both countries due to their proximity to our border." I felt guilty for telling a lie to Julius... I should ask Aunt Carol to punish me after this. It's shameful for me to use Julius's trust in such a way.
"I see, I must ramp up my studies then. It's shameful that I did not know of a house that has influence in our kingdom, no matter how insignificant it may seem." Subaru... you are responsible for that.
Apparently, Uncle Grimm decided to assist Julius as well. For a moment, he stared at Julius with a face that seemed to tell his story. Julius got the impression that he was trying to tell him to be more relaxed and carefree while keeping his conduct impactful.
"Sir Grimm, do you really think I should be less strict in my conduct towards myself?"
As Uncle Grimm wiped the white cloth across the glass in his hand, he nodded his head.
"Wouldn't it be slothful for me not to be the best knight I could be if I didn't have strict standards for myself?" Julius' voice was tense.
While looking at Julius, Uncle Grimm twisted his forehead for a moment, asking him to reconsider his question.
"Please forgive me for not being able to understand. Why would being less strict help me to be the best version of myself?" Julius's voice sounded confused.
"It...also...burdens...you." Uncle Grimm had to stop after forcing himself to speak. Normally, he would be able to speak clearly, but it seems he overexerted himself today. I should have kept an eye out for this as well.
"Please correct me if I have the wrong idea. To become a better knight, should I be less strict on myself?"
Uncle Grimm nodded in agreement.
"Could it be that my conduct is too formal or strict to allow me to communicate with people from all walks of life?"
Uncle Grimm nodded once more. Julius contemplated Uncle Grimm for a moment before finishing his drink in front of him and preparing to leave as well. Since it was too late, almost everyone left the party. Julius probably stayed out of camaraderie.
Prior to addressing me, he rose from his seat and checked to see that his uniform was in perfect condition. Also, I heard the ballroom door open and familiar footsteps walking towards us.
"The hospitality and accommodation you provided me are much appreciated. May I ask where Subaru is? It is also important to say goodbye to him before I leave."
"Juli, I'm right here. Did I miss something important?" Subaru walked towards us with a tired smile on his face and waved once when Julius turned around to look at him. Furthermore, I could see Kage hovering around Subaru's head.
"Nothing worthwhile." Julius seemed to be applying Uncle Grimm's advice. I was worried about Subaru looking at Julius for a moment before continuing.
"If you say it like that, Juli, you'll break Lady Schwartz's heart. We just said our goodbyes before she left. It seemed that she was quite happy and interested in someone with purple hair. I wonder who is it." Subaru... I often wonder if I set an adverse example for him.
"Did she... If I may ask, how do you feel about Lady Schwartz?" Julius's voice had a bit of tension in it. He also seemed to be feeling guilty. Julius probably worried that Lady Schwartz and Subaru were intimate and him dancing with her would feel like a betrayal to Subaru... if he knew the truth.
"To me, she is like a sister." Subaru's carefree tone is making me more worried than anything else. "She even taught me how to talk to ladies in a respectful manner."
"Oh, I see. Now I must go if you don't mind." Julius now seemed more relaxed.
"Of course, Juli. Look forward to seeing you later."
"We were honored to have Julius as a guest."
"It is an honor for me, Reinhard. I am looking forward to our next meeting as well, Subaru." Julius bowed slightly and walked toward the exit.
Subaru looked around to see if Julius had left the ballroom, then turned to speak to me.
"Whew!" He exclaimed. "Auntie found me when Rem and Ram were leaving when Ros-chi came to pick them up... If you're wondering when she found me, it was when I was saying goodbye to Rem and Ram. However, it seemed like he was in a hurry after seeing Auntie. He is probably good at recognizing threats." I'm truly disappointed with Subaru's conduct today.
"-Subaru, I hope Auntie punishes you. Ok-kay? I'm also mad at myself because I thought your lady version was pretty. It's possible I need therapy.-" Sadly, Kage, it doesn't seem like there are shrinks for spirits.
"Subaru, do you know what you did today?"
"Haruo, do you have any idea how many ladies are waiting for Juli at the exit? Although I know he is handsome and probably used to it, it should be a pleasant surprise. I must admit I'm not experienced when it comes to the fairer sex, but I am sure it's not what Subaru thinks.
"Subaru, that's no excuse."
"Auntie also told me so... She is waiting for me in the garden right now. It was also her request that I tell Uncle Grimm that if his work was done, he should come to the garden.
During this time, Uncle Grimm was giving advice to two ladies and dealing with them. One of the ladies seems to be quite emotional.
"Sniff...why wouldn't he...sniff...bother with her daughter...sniff...He used to do when mother was here...sniff...with us." The other blonde lady patted the brunette's back to calm her down.
"There Elena...There." She was speaking gently to the brunette woman named Elena when she said, "Calm down, I'm here."
"Will you Mary... Will you?" A strong sense of intoxication emanated from her.
Uncle Grimm also began talking with her as Subaru contemplated what he should say to Aunt Carol. I noticed the brunette lady staring at Subaru's hair.
"-Subaru, that brunette lady is staring at your hair strangely.-" It seems Kage has also noticed it.
"Yeah...eh... I will tell Auntie that Uncle Grimm is busy."
We were all gathered in the back garden of the mansion as the guests left and the servants began to clean up. Subaru looked less guilty than he ought to be while I was watching him. I haven't scolded him in a while and he is an adult now, but what he did was too far. I'm not angry because he dressed like a woman. It is because of his actions that I am angry.
A dance with one of the most famous knights in the kingdom, who has no idea about the whole thing. However, Reinhard, the only Astrea man who is not completely an idiot, still wasn't happy about lying to his friend.
"Subaru, first of all, why? If you prefer to dress like a woman, tell me honestly since I will support you if that is your preference?" I know it isn't, but I will still be sure before moving on to the next step.
"What? I don't have a preference like that. Having the ability to disguise so well that hardly anyone can see me through is nice, but I would prefer not to dress like a lady. It's just my best disguise at the moment." Since Subaru confirmed my last suspicion, it's time for us to move on.
"Subaru, you're an adult now, and I don't want to treat you like a child all the time. I am truly curious about your reasoning more than anything else."
"I did it to listen to the Russell guy but turns out he was there for a simple deal. It was even so dangerous that I risked dancing the tango with Juli in order to get close to him and eavesdrop on his conversations". He talks about it like it wasn't anything. Honestly, I didn't expect Subaru to be good at dancing in both roles, but this was way beyond my expectations. He might cause me to have a heart attack.
"I can't even… I give up on trying to help you see the mistakes of your way, Subaru. I will let time do the trick and use these times to tease you when you mature. In the present situation, I will punish you properly so that you will be less likely to repeat the offense. Let me think." I scratched and scratched my chin as he looked for allies across the room.
"Haruo, could you please help a little?"
"The punishment should be doubled, Aunt Carol. Father, I need to be corrected for my shameful actions as well. I had to lie to a friend and breach his trust in me." Reinhard's voice carried a pang of clear guilt. It's his brother not him to blame, thankfully Heinkel decided to be useful for once and said it before me.
"The fault doesn't lie with you, son. It's mostly your brother's fault, or in this case, your sister's. To be honest, I'm not sure." Heinkel also seemed too concerned for Reinhard to laugh at Subaru. With a few centuries of practice, he might become a decent father.
"I must insist." However, I doubt the emotional scars Wilhelm and Heinkel caused Reinhard will fully heal in his lifetime. I don't know what to feel about Heinkel anymore after seeing that he at least tried to correct his past wrongdoings.
"Then let me think for a while." I saw Heinkel looking at me for inspiration. Subaru's rather... explosive childhood did require me to practice my scolding skills.
I felt a hand on my shoulder and turned to see my loving husband looking at me with a meaningful look. I was still pondering what to do with Subaru, but after looking into my husband's eyes for a moment, I came up with an idea.
"Subaru, now that you are an adult, you should help your father manage the Astrea Trading Company."
"It doesn't sound so bad." Just wait little punk.
"It's paperwork." I know how much you detest repetitive work. I hope this gives you some 'free' time to consider your mistakes.
"Auntie, please don't do something like that. Father, please say something." Subaru looked at me as his eyes opened with worry and he started to speak with a begging voice.
"I think it sounds like a brilliant idea. Upon completing your kingdom patrol of six months, you can begin. Heinkel's voice sounded enthusiastic, to say the least. Reinhard could also join in when he was free. My choice even made him look happy. Perhaps he would have less paperwork to do.
I left two lost causes and one partial lost cause to their own devices and turned back to ask how he was.
"Sweety, how was it being a bartender for the day?" From a war hero to a bartender sounded like a poor novel, but Grimm looked pleased. By just using facial expressions, nods, and a few words, he taught countless nobles today.
"I...found...my...calling." It seems that at least he enjoyed this recognition. Also, I did until learning of a certain nasty eyes boy's action and hearing his words directed toward me.
As they say, "Hell has no fury like a scorned auntie."
Subaru, I wonder why. It's time to move forward in your life. Actually... I have one more question to ask.
"Subaru, did you act like the last time and threaten someone?" He turned from the conversation he was having with his father and brother to speak with me.
"No, I have improved my disguise over the years. Snob and threatening wasn't a good choice." At least he learned his lesson. I also acted presumptuous and regal with it." Never mind, he was a lost cause.
First I must thank my PoliticanSeal, Gullible_Emotion_696, Scuffedsenku09, and Dr. Ren Otonashi for beta-reading
It takes a team effort to make sense of the stuff I write. Still, it must be considered a crime against humanity to read my first drafts.
…
I do also have to apologise for the delay and no updates for a month
I had to deal with real-life issues, mostly health.
I hope this 20.5k+ chapter makes up for the wait.
…
Speaking of the word count, I must also add something about the planned re-writes.
I did say before I plan to re-write the first 15 chapters, but I changed my mind on one thing.
It's going to be way more extensive than I first thought.
While you can still understand new chapters without reading the re-writes, you might still find some inconsistencies, since I will change a fair amount of the fanon I wrote and chapters.
I do believe everyone will like the change if you liked the previous versions since I'm a much better writer now and have good victi... I mean, beta-readers to deal with the Auream Dialect
