Note; Conversations between Monsters and Selina will be translated to her by Tia if he is nearby and unoccupied. It would quickly become redundant if I keep mentioning that, so I'll say it here.

Arnou was not pleased in the condition his firstborn came back in. It would be a lie to say he wasn't surprised he was still alive, being the runt that he was, but it would also be a lie to say he was as his child was… odd to say the least.

His child was an Abnormal.

Arnou wasn't sure what to feel about that.

How should he treat his firstborn when there was a chance he would kill his pack? He might seem amicable for the time being, however, how long would that last?

...No, Arnou can't doubt his family.

Not again.

The Witch and the Renard seemed to get along nicely with his children, and his mate, if the dazed look she sported since she came back into the den told him anything. It wasn't a [Charm] spell, or a [Mind Control] spell.

Those had a certain scent his nose would've picked up.

Arnou grumbled under his breath.

'What will be, will be.' He would ponder on this more later, when he wasn't drifting between consciousness and unconsciousness. Perhaps asking Accala's opinion would change his mind.

He doubted it.

In the Willow Forest, Witches brought nothing but trouble after all.

'Oh right… I need to think up a name for my firstborn…'

Tia's siblings had been named.

His little sister obtained the name Saeko, a cute name that brought up the image of zombies for some reason.

His first little brother was named Yukon, reminding him of the state in Canada. It matched the cold aura coming out of him.

His second little brother was named Nyx, who was developing dark spots as opposed to their white.

His family's absolute disregard of a theme in naming aside, he wondered if he also had a name given to him by the direwolves… Tia wouldn't really mind getting another one. The Schnieden name was a name he wouldn't mind severing ties to.

Though whether or not he already had it was something he'll need to investigate later, since his siblings picked up on the name he gave to Lynn.

Saeko jumped on him, almost squishing him against the floor with her larger size, followed by Yokon and Nyx.

Lynn took vindictive glee as he experienced what she had been dealing with for the last few days. While soft it was absolutely freezing. Was this their blood as frost wolves acting up? They were 1/8th of one, but clearly that was enough for them to inherit their body temperature if he compared them to their mother.

Tia slightly understood why they clung to others as much as they did. Though the specifics were lost on him, he reasoned they simply appreciated the warmth they radiated.

'Well… this isn't so bad.' As an older brother, it was his duty and responsibility to- fuck he was freezing. Why was being surrounded by them colder than being in the frozen cave? 'Endure it Tia, endure it…'

[+Reputation gained, Saeko]

[+Reputation gained, Yukon]

[+Reputation gained, Nyx]

He couldn't endure it.

Tia would've struggled to throw them off him before, but now that he had evolved and had more than twice his old STR stat, that was a thing in the past… or so he had hoped.

'Note to self, stats do not affect out-of-combat scenarios.' In other words… While he did throw them off thanks to his evolution, it was far harder than he expected it to be… and he just got glomped on by them once again, his siblings seeing his act as a challenge and actively pushed him down.

'I definitely got the short end of the stick when it comes to size.' Half their size, and twice as light, if it wasn't for [The Gamer] then he would have certainly been the runt, the Omega of the pack.

Thankfully with it, he avoided that pain in the ass.

"Selina…" The purple haired witch tilted her head, more than willing to keep her distance from the pups. Her eyes quickly glanced at his mother, who already snapped out of her daze and was now glaring at her. She edged further from the pups, lessening the intensity of the she-wolf's glare.

Lynn seemed pleased at this arrangement.

Tia sniffed the air and snorted.

'There's too much of everything to tell anything apart.' The giant encirclement of corpses deterred clever predators who knew better than to go anywhere near the one who managed to kill so many, especially when the majority were scavengers.

That just meant whoever killed them… did so when they were weak.

Putting that aside, Lynn managed to gather some berries for Selina to eat. Showing that when she wasn't panicking and exhausted, she could avoid being entangled by the thorns of the sweet berry bushes she passed by unlike the time they first met.

Tia obtained the [Crafting] skill when he created a campfire out of some stone, logs, sticks and a piece of coal he had Selina excavate by pushing it out like a wart.

It was a convenient thing, [Crafting] was.

Now if it only had an instruction manual to go along with it, and it would actually find some use for him, but as it is now, Tia tossed it to the side and focused on other things.

Such as the continuation of their move.

The direwolves of the south hadn't attacked yet because they had come across the knights chasing after Selina, or so Arnou found out. They suffered minimal losses, but many were injured in the scruffle. The knights saved them some time, and nothing more.

[Quest Initiated; The Great Move II]

[Time is of the essence, or not. The Southern Pack is quickly recuperating their numbers, and will soon come back and initiate their attack.

Quest Objective; Protect your siblings, and Lynn while on the move.

Alternate Objective [Possible only because of the presence of Selina Moonsong]; Slaughter the attacking pack with extreme prejudice.

Quest Reward; [Crafting] Recipe Book.

Alternate Objective; Evolution Requirement Override [Item]

[Evolution Requirement Override] [Item]

[One time use item, allows users with the ability [Evolution] to evolve despite not fulfilling the necessary requirements.]

This... was honestly the best reward thus far, excluding the rewards that unlocked features of [The Gamer] previously unavailable to him.

But was it worth risking the others?

No, it was not.

Tia did not need to ponder to know that he wouldn't risk the others just because he wanted an item that would let him evolve whenever, and however he wanted. If he could do it by himself, then he would do it, his life was his to live and his to risk in combat. Should he die, then it would be only him and him alone.

Therefore, he would ignore the alternative requirement and stick with the original. In any case, the original reward wasn't that bad. It would work perfectly with his new skill, which was hard to use on its own as it provided no recipes.

...Speaking of rewards, there was that quest that gave him a [Job].

[Hunter]

It was a job that boosted one's parameters in areas surrounded by [Nature] such as forests, caves, and oceans. While normally a ranged class in games, it seems to have been modified to be melee-compatible. Tia didn't know what the ranged [Hunter] entailed, but the melee [Hunter] focused on speed and str, which coincided perfectly with his stats.

However, it didn't affect his current stats upon acquisition. He assumed it would increase the amount of status points he obtained via level up.

Unlike skills he gained normally, skills gained from [Jobs] don't give out bonus status points. And unlike skills, there were no distinctions to separate it from [Traits].

[Hunter's Eye] was a passive skill that let him tell information whether or not something is edible or dangerous, and how likely he is to succeed in hunting it.

[Hunter's Will] was an active skill that boosts parameters within [Nature] areas. It was a straightforward skill that was also lackluster.

[Hunter's Body] was an active skill that needed a constant flow of mana, only usable when [Hunter's Will] was active and further increased parameters when active by a considerable amount.

[Hunter's Blade] was another active skill, though required no requirements other than a weapon. It applies [Hunter's Poison] on enemies which in turn grants afflictions similar to [Weak Paralysis], [Poison] and sometimes [Blindness].

It was a weak class, for now.

There was a feature called job proficiency that appeared along with it, and he was half-sure he would get more skills for the job as it leveled. Or maybe he would just become more proficient with the skills that came with it. With [Evolution] there was also a chance he could evolve the job... though that was him being hopeful.

Putting that aside, because he managed to complete the bonus objective, he also gained class-skills from the [Forest Guardian] and [Guardian] job.

[Forest Stalker] was something he could see himself using all the time. It was a stealth-skill, sort of like his [Sneak] but many times better. [Forest Stalker] allowed him to cloak, and hide himself while hunting a target within [Nature] areas. His target would have a hard time discovering him with the skill.

[Iron Body] on the other hand, was simply convenient as it boosted any armor of a certain class on his body. As a human, that might've been useful, as a direwolf, it was more or less useless. Still, it was useful so he would think of a way to use it.

Last but not the least, the [Stealth] skill variant he gained.

[Weak Presence] was a passive skill that can be deactivated. It essentially makes it harder for anything to perceive his presence.

Tia twitched when he realized he was beginning to obtain an assassin-build. He didn't mind, but he mostly preferred tank builds or support/debuff builds when he played with his sister, who loved to play DPS.

...Well, it would be interesting to see her world at least.

Though it was still in its early stages, perhaps he could still... no, he'd spent far too much points to stop now.

Tia convinced himself that he didn't need to change his build to something he was more familiar with. Maybe he could make a split between DPS/debuff rather than support/debuff. He'd been putting it off lately, but it was time to use (Imagination) to find the ideal build.

"Not gonna sleep?" His eyes trailed to his right where Lynn made herself known. The Renard plopped beside him and stared at the fire he made. Her eyes moved over to him, questioning what he just made.

"I don't feel like it." Tia could see Selina sleeping with her siblings, the little girl more than willing to endure the biting cold to avoid Arnou's wrath. Lynn must've dumped them on her before she left, as his siblings seem to love the fox kit.

"Even if you don't, you should." He agreed with her, but he wanted to sort things out before the sun rose. They would probably be able to move tomorrow since Selina healed his father of his injuries. "Did you save her?"

"...I don't think I did." Looking back, Tia had been more or less useless to Selina. He only gave her warmth, direction, and company. She took care of enemies when they became too tough for him, and she held back those knights that hunted her down. The direwolf pup had just been a tag-along, claiming to have saved her… could wait until he actually have.

"Did she save you?" Tia shook his head.

Lynn frowned as she tried to understand their relationship.

"Is she like me?" Tia tilted his head, then nodded. While not dead, Selina's teacher was missing and quite possibly is dead. However, without a corpse or proof, they could only speculate her status.

Selina's situation was similar to Lynn in the way they were forced out of their home.

Call him a bleeding heart, but as a man, he couldn't just leave them on their own… though in Selina's case it wasn't a choice on his part as the other option was to be buried in dirt and die then become her food.

'What do I do now? I guess I can just wait and get stronger, but what do I do after that?' Being a direwolf left him without many options, so for the time being, he would set exploring the new world as the goal. Selina would probably go along with him, if only for the fact that exploring would allow her the chance of discovering her teacher's whereabouts.

'If I leave with Selina, would Lynn come along?' Tia stared at the Renard who was quickly beginning to fall asleep. The direwolf pup shrugged, Renard was free, he was worried for her but if she decides to split he wouldn't judge her.

She had her own life to lead after all.

The moon was high in the sky.

As was the blade in Raven's hand. The goblin narrowed his eyes and hacked at the metal lock in front of him. It broke with the third strike, and an idea occurred to him after it dropped to the ground.

Couldn't he have just had Druk hold it in his hand and break it that way? He could break through steel with his bare hands. It would've been quieter too.

...Hindsight was 20/20, moving on, Raven opened the door and cringed. The air within the portable cell was repugnant. He thought goblin dens smelled horrible when mating season came around. Clearly he underestimated how much of a degenerate the average human is.

"Who's… there…?"

Nobody bothered to clean the prisoner.

Blood, pus, shit and piss were the most common thing to find in the small cell. If the male witch were female, he would've found something else mixed in, but he digressed. The goblin approached the chained redhead, and began working on their chains.

'A male witch is an abnormality, as almost every witch every recorded has been female. The only reason we found out about him would be because of the sensor the Empire created for the hunt.' It didn't have much range, but it let them know if they were attacking the right person. The redhead was unlucky, as without it, and had he not bumped into them, they would've simply ignored the alchemist.

Raven reminisced about the time they caught the redhead. The young man didn't go quietly, and while not as dangerous or deadly as Selina Moonsong, the alchemy-focused witch was deadly in his own way with his potions.

Nobody died that day, but everyone was in pain, and potentially either poisoned or given diarrhea.

A glance behind him showed Diana peeking further inside the tent, she shook her head and moved somewhere else, a sign that she hadn't found anyone that might've given away their position after his blunder. In all honesty, the sound of metal against metal wasn't that uncommon in the camp.

People spared all the time, especially when there was nothing to do.

"...The goblin rider...?" Raven nodded, quickly moving from lock to lock with the keys he snatched nearby. The male witch, whose name was Pollux if he remembered right, was confused but didn't complain... not that he would've been able to do anything if he did. Unlike Selina, Pollux was weak.

"I'm here to offer you a deal, witch." The goblin spoke after undoing the last chain, catching Pollux as fell down, too weak to hold himself up.

Pollux stayed quiet, Raven took this chance to expand on his point.

"We're going to kill Lord Bloodaxe." That got a reaction out of him, cobalt blue orbs stared at him in slight interest. "We need your help to get rid of him."

It was generally accepted that witches were strong, and tricky. It wouldn't be the first time a witch in captivity killed their captor despite all odds. A dues ex machina people said, bullshit Raven thought. If the captor died, that would mean they were incompetent, therefore unfit to rule the Empire.

"...I'm listening."

'So far so good, we should be able to do this tonight if nothing happens.' Raven grunted and called Lux inside.

The Lamia winced once he came inside. He slithered slowly, careful to avoid the dirty spots with his fingers on his nose. "How did you handle this all this time...?"

He raised his now glowing free hand and began gradually healing, Lux couldn't make it too strong, or else the glow would give away their position. Even now they were risking a lot by doing this, but they needed the witch to be a tip-top shape.

Raven took this chance to explain themselves.

"Here's the pla-"

Diana spotted movement in the corner of her vision and silently filled the tent with cold air, stopping the goblin mid-speech and rendering the other two silent.

'...Two sets of footsteps.' Raven mentally noted, keeping his breathing even. A quick glance to Lux had the Lamia-hybrid stop his healing magic. 'Thankfully there wasn't a trap in the cage, so unless they found us from that then we should be in the clear.'

His group waited in bated silence, anxiously waiting to see if they would need to strike early and run for the hills, or continue their intended plans.

The tent flap opened.

Druk acted quick, snapping his grip around their heads and crushed their skulls. It was quick, silent, and effective. The minotaur dragged the bodies inside as quickly as he could but unfortunately, wasn't quick enough. Alarm bells began ringing around the camp as the guards realized the disturbance.

"We need to move, now!" Raven shouted, forgoing stealth. He passed the witch to Diana and led the others into the forest. It was unfortunate they couldn't do it tonight, but at the very least, they managed to secure their main target. 'Tomorrow... we can kill him tomorrow...!'

Selina separated her hands from the large direwolf, the dim glow signifying her healing magic dissipating into wisps. It was enough for a patch-job, as healing magic wasn't her forte and it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that she was incompetent with it.

Arnou growled something, Tia moved to translate.

"Inadequate." Selina acknowledged her incompetence… but it still annoyed her when others pointed it out. "It'll work."

"Good to know." Arnou scoffed at her tone but walked outside with a small limp. Combat wasn't impossible, but prolonged combat was asking too much.

Accala and Selina could cover for him until he could get back his strength. Until then, they would rely on his superior sense of smell and knowledge of the deeper areas of the Willow Forest for direction.

…For some odd reason, Tia felt like he wouldn't be seeing much action with those two accompanying their little pack.

Selina could immobilize them, then his mother would go in for the kill. A quick one-two knockout with a small side dish of death. Aerial threats could be dealt with easily.

Selina would shoot rock shards, and Accala would do the same but with Ice. The large she-wolf could also use her superior size and slap them down with her paw should they divebomb.

Overconfidence was a quick way to self-ruin.

But for some reason, it felt like it was only proper for him to be overconfident with the members nearby. The only thing that might prove to be a threat would be when his siblings get too curious and wander away, or if Accala and Arnou couldn't deal with Selina anymore and decided to drive her away.

In other words… his responsibility would be to act as a middle man between his parents and Selina.

...Tia would be lying if he didn't admit to a little bit of annoyance.

And by a little, he meant a ton.

And by a ton, he meant a fuck ton.

But, these were the cards dealt to him, so he would play as well as he possibly could. Tia was more or less accustomed to constantly being in a state of annoyance, being the son of a shitty former-military father.

"Where are we heading?" Lynn questioned, resting around Selina's shoulders as she held him against her budding chest… Tia resolved to stop calling it that, as it made him feel like a lolicon.

Arnou grunted, gingerly shifting his paws around a groove of roots. "Somewhere deeper into the forest… in other words, we're leaving the outskirts."

Selina tilted her head as Tia instantly translated for her. The witch voiced her thoughts on the matter with a tone that is half-wary and half-curious. "Would that not put your pups in danger…?"

Said pups were resting on Accala's back, much to the she-wolf barely repressed glee, and sleeping. They were growing fast for their age, but not fast enough. It wouldn't be for a few more months till they could even struggle, much less put up a fight.

"They will be watched." His answer did not satisfy the little witch, but decided not to question the large direwolf's decision. "...I know a spot rarely visited by monsters."

Selina was silent for a few moments as she thought over his words, using her own experience as guidelines, she asked a question. "Former resident?"

"...Of a sort."

That was the best answer she was going to get, as it was growing clearer that the direwolf did not want to converse any further.

"He doesn't trust you." Lynn muttered quietly.

Selina shrugged, rocking Renard resting on her shoulders. "I don't care."

"Might need to," Tia spoke up, "Or else it's gonna be one tense year for both of us."

The Little Witch wondered if she should just grab Tia and leave, but disregarded the idea. If they hadn't made contact, then she might've but now that they learned her scent? Direwolves were strong, fast, and fiercely protective of their young.

She could already imagine taking on such a large direwolf because she escaped with his firstborn, who it seemed to spoil.

Selina imagined the fight being 50/50, should she be able to prepare a suitable terrain that is… and enough distance not to worry about instant death. Without those she estimated a 10/90 chance of victory.

The odds were against her.

Hopefully it wouldn't come to that though.

"I'll think about it." She wouldn't.

As he expected.

Tia did absolutely nothing in the last few days aside from being a translator and a warm body pillow for Selina, or his siblings.

On one hand, he was seriously disappointed.

On the other hand, he wasn't enough of an idiot to jump into the field when it began acting like the Red Sea and swallowing whatever fell into the abyss before closing up.

Or when his mother flash-froze everything in sight. Literally creating a field of hoarfrost.

Or when his father had a chance to join in and literally tore an elephant-like creature twice his size limb from limb.

So yes, while he was sincerely disappointed at his lack of participation, he was also sincerely glad he didn't. Because if he did, he would've been caught up in the crossfire, and become collateral.

Tia didn't spend much time sulking. He wanted to level up [Observe] but he would've probably been knocked out if he did so.

It was tense enough without him acting as a mediator stopping Selina, or Arnou, from stepping on each other's toes. They didn't need him passing out from self-inflicted pain that had no explanation other than, 'That damned witch probably did something.'

So he scrapped that idea and checked his next conditions for evolution, and maybe trigger some quests.

[Evolution; Current Race; [Enhanced Species] Direwolf]

Evolution Requirement; [LvL; 20] [Sanity; +90] [Total Rep Levels; 50]

Actions 24hours prior to evolution will determine evolution. Certain items may be consumed in order to affect evolution.

Note! [Enhanced Species] status will be lost after evolution.]

Learning that he would lose his [Enhanced Species] status was disappointing, but not something to sulk over. It wasn't doing anything for him anyways, the [Increased EXP acquisition] thing he would've gotten had been nullified.

Raising his reputation wouldn't take that much time, judging by the time he spent raising Lynn's. If his math was right then he was already halfway to the required amount.

What raises or lowers sanity was still unknown to him. Tia theorized it had something to do with being immortal, perhaps it meant that while they couldn't be killed in the truest sense they could still be killed through combat, illness, or other means…

Or maybe it lowers when an emotion intense enough to bypass [The Gamer's] calming effect happens.

Or maybe it would happen due to a certain skill, or maybe through repeated trauma.

...In any case, he needed to be careful not to do anything risky.

Whilst traveling, he managed to spend the time through asking Selina to explain to him how magic worked in the world… It was simpler than he expected.

Essentially speaking, magic was everywhere in everything. Monsters were made of magic, the more magic in a monster the stronger it generally became. At the same time, a normal person could tell whether or not a monster had more magic than the others depending on their size.

It was one of many methods to tell a monster's strength.

And one of the most unreliable, according to Selina.

In the past, humans were unable to utilize magic and only became able to when an Immortal slept with one of their own and passed down the ability with their offspring.

After a few thousand years, almost 75% of humanity became able to use magic. While the remaining 25% weren't able to because of either bad luck, or the fact their area was purged of the original's bloodline.

...On a side note, apparently the first immortal had a 100-person large harem.

Tia made sure to not think too deeply on that front, lest he develop a quest that made him make a harem despite being a monster.

Magic was used as a substitute for electricity in the world, while it still existed, not many people saw the use for it aside from the magic-less country further south past the Empire.

Individuals capable of magic became stronger after absorbing the magic residue from monsters slain, or from the area after a fight or practice. The specifics were something Selina couldn't completely explain as it varied between individuals and what type of residue got absorbed.

Recovering one's reserves became easier depending on the location. Magic rich environments like the frost cave, or the deeper areas of the Willow Forest were such areas.

Monsters naturally recovered their reserves, humans couldn't.

Witches normally made pacts to develop their monster-blood and obtain a monster's ability to passively generate magic on top of their usual use of being body-guards, sparring partners, and adventurer pets.

"...!" Lynn suddenly stiffened from her position on Selina's shoulder's. Her features narrowed as she stared at the spot they just walked past. "...Was that…?"

"The border between the outskirts and the outer sanctum… also known as the middlelands." Arnou explained. "...Be careful not to stand out, the six of you are easy prey to the residents here."

As he said that, a tongue shot out from the nearby lake, wrapping around Selina's ankle.

"Shit!" The little girl yelped as she was knocked over. Tia acted quickly and worked with Lynn to tear off the rapidly retracting tongue. It went limp after Accala shot several shards of ice into the now-bloody lake.

Arnou scoffed and walked past the fallen witch.

"...Stand up, we're nearing my old den."
