Shadowmoon Valley, Eleven Days Later
After over a week of fighting, the rest of Outland with the exception of Shadowmoon Valley were freed from the Legion's control. With Illidan's growing army aided by the draenei's artillery, they were able to strategically take out the gunships and open the way for a ground invasion
Hellfire Peninsula was the first one to fall and was chosen as the first target so that the draenei will no longer have to concentrate their defenses in that area and focus on the borders between Terokkar Forest and Shadowmoon Valley. It took nearly an entire week of endless fighting as even without the gunships, the Legion had an overwhelming amount of troops and this was the Legion's secondary outpost after the Black Temple itself. Dreadlords and pit lords even joined the defense of the demon gate but ultimately, it was sealed and destroyed. Illidan even made sure to create an explosion on the other side to ensure the Legion won't be returning anytime soon and if they did return, the draenei would have time to properly guard the area
Blade's Edge Mountains was the next on the list. The battle only lasted three days. The undead managed to capture a few more gunships in the Hellfire Peninsula and with it, completely shattered the axe cut valleys of the region. Unlike the draenei, the undead showed no regards for the landscape at all much like the Legion. The landscape even allowed for the demon hunters to sneak their way around and find a secure place for Illidan to seal the demon gate. When it was finally sealed, it was only a matter of days before the Legion were defeated
Now, the undead and the draenei gathered on the borders between Shadowmoon Valley and Terokkar Forest
"At last, the temple." Illidan said, clearly eager to end this battle as soon as possible
"This battle will be far more difficult than the previous ones, Illidan." Velen said and got everyone's attention. "Magtheridon, the pit lord who rules Outland in the Legion's stead, has made the temple as his stronghold. All of his most powerful lieutenants will be there and he will not be easy to take down." he warned
"We shall see." Kor'vas commented and Illysanna gave the order for the captured gunships to rain down destruction. "Illidan has defeated a pit lord and Tichondrius in a fight on his own before."
"Hardly matters now." Illidan cut in. "Let's get this over with." he said and walked towards the exit on the draenei ship they were on
"What about you, Velen?" Illysanna asked when the rest of the demon hunters were already out
"I'll come join you in the second assault." Velen said and the demon hunter nodded before joining her comrades
The undead were already engaged in battle against the Burning Legion. Undead demons and fel orcs battled their living counterparts. The Legion had a lot more infernals and fel reavers to throw at their enemies and since they weren't living, they cannot be reanimated into undeath. The Legion's siege contraptions even constantly threw infernals at the incoming undead army which made this battle more difficult than anticipated
Not bothering to sneak their way through the temple, the demon hunters split up and joined their army in various fronts of the battle. It was very difficult to gain any grounds in the temple itself with such a large army standing between them and the Lord of Outland
During the assault, Illidan was forced to take cover behind some walls when he got too close to the Legion's defensive structures while most of the lesser undead got slaughtered. He tried to use his eye beam but a lot of eredar warlocks used their magics to defend the tower. "Damn it." the lich king cursed when the towers fired on him. He was forced to fall back while the undead group with him got slaughtered. Cleverly, the demons did not stray too far away from the towers and remained in range
"Lord Illidan." Allari called out as she approached her master who was taking cover
"What's the situation?" Illidan quickly asked
"A stalemate. The Legion's defensive structures are too powerful and they are protecting it from any non direct attacks. We will not be able to make any significant progress unless they go down." Allari responded
"Perhaps we can assist with that." a voice called out. The two demon hunters looked above them and saw some invisible creatures. From their looks, they appeared to be malformed creatures
"Who are you?" Allari asked warily
"We are Draenei as well. After the Orcs were corrupted, some of us were transformed into what you see now by their warlocks. Since then, we have been fighting the orcs and their demon masters but have been slowly losing." one of the malformed draenei said. "I am Akama, elder sage of the Broken Draenei."
"And how exactly can you help us? The Legion can see us even when we hide ourselves." Illidan asked
"You, yes, but not us. Using our own natural affinity with the land, we can evade even the Legion's ability to see invisible creatures." Akama responded with a grim expression
"But if you do, the Legion will see you and you won't make it out alive." Allari realized
"Yes, but if it is to free our world from the Legion, it is worth the sacrifice." Akama responded. He did not bother to wait for a response and merely motioned for his warriors to sneak their way in. Illidan was impressed by their devotion to fighting the Legion
'Listen. Any of you see any malformed creatures, don't attack them. Their infiltrating the temple to disable the Legion's towers.' Illidan said telepathically to all his minions
At the temple's main gates
"I had heard the rumors but..." Turalyon said when he finally came face to face with his former comrades, Alexandrous Mograine and Tirion Fordring
"Not all of us has had the happy life you had, Turalyon." Mograine berated him
"Happy? I nearly died fighting the Legion!" Turalyon responded. "You have forsaken your faith in the Light and are serving a demon." he added before glaring at Fordring. "I would have expected this from him but..." now looking at Mograine. "from you!"
"Enough of this, the three of you." Maiev berated them as she walked up to them. "Discuss your own personal arguments later and focus on taking down the Black Temple. Any of you speak one more word about this and I'll trap you in this blade." she said while raising Frostmourne before creating a shield of frost when a stray Legion artillery landed near them. It was also at this moment that Illidan informed them about the Broken. "Alright, listen Turalyon. There are some creatures that call themselves 'Broken Draenei' and they're disabling the towers. Make sure that none of your soldiers attack them."
Turalyon glared at her for a few moments before giving up. "We know about them but we thought that the Legion have hunted them all down. However, you are right. We need to talk about this once this is done." he said and separated from the death knights
"He didn't take it well, did he?" another voice asked, this time belonging to Varian
"Just shut up and ensure that the Legion does not push us back." Maiev said and led them inside the main gates before taking cover
Just a few moments later, the towers lost the energy fueling them and they deactivated. "These 'Broken Draenei' have disabled the defenses. Move quick before the Legion reactivates them." Varian ordered and this time, an undead army came through the gates and the demons quickly engaged them in battle
"Guess we do this the hard way." Fordring said before joining the melee
"Keep your guard up. These are just the minions. Be careful in case the lieutenants join in." Maiev warned and took a small group in another direction
The broken draenei, as expected, were killed as soon as they disabled the towers. "It won't be long now." an eredar commander said after killing a few broken draenei. "Prepare for direct battle." he ordered and just a minutes later, the undead stormed the first Legion camp within the temple
At that same time in the second level of the temple, one of the draenei ships dispatched Alleria, Velen and Khadgar and a small army of Shattrath's forces, who were quickly engaged by the demons. Fortunately for them, the broken had already disabled the towers in this area so they weren't instantly slaughtered but the ship they were on was shot down just a few minutes later
"Someone knew we were coming." Alleria sarcastically commented as she began firing her arrows at the demons
"I really hope that Turalyon can keep himself in check." Khadgar muttered while flinging spells across the battlefield
"I hope so too." Alleria agreed
Before too long, the Legion began overwhelming Velen's group and forced them back. They couldn't even bring in that many ships to support their attack because they would simply be shot down. The Legion cleverly hid their artillery deeper inside the temple which means that they would have little support. Velen's group was fortunate that a part of the undead have managed to breach the second level of the temple. This turned the battle and made it even. Anya and Maiev were the ones who met up with Velen and began pushing the demons back slowly
"Nice timing." Khadgar said in a grateful tone
"This isn't over. Don't get too cocky." Maiev reminded him that they still had a long way to take over the temple
"She's right. This is the second level right?" Anya asked. "We should split up and take down Magtheridon's lieutenants before we face that Pit Lord." she said
Some time later, Velen's group found one of the lieutenants, the Mistress of Torment
"Well, well. Seems like we have new pets." the mistress said before her minions attacked
"Damn it. Velen, Khadgar, get out of here." Alleria cursed when she noticed the mistress casting a spell. Without missing a beat, the two left the area as quickly as possible before their minds were warped by the succubus, leaving behind Alleria, Maiev and Anya
"A wise choice." the mistress complimented. "Let's make this an all girl dance, shall we?" she said with excitement before drawing her blades
Maiev quickly engaged the succubus in combat while lesser undead kept her minions away from the death knight. Anya and Alleria, former sisters in arms both now on the opposite sides of life, are now fighting side by side, providing cover for the death knight
"So, you're the one wielding Frostmourne." the mistress muttered when she was in a sword lock with the death knight. "Let's see how-" she said but was cut off when she was forced to push Maiev back so the succubus could block an arrow from Alleria. Maiev used this chance to attempt to run the demoness through. Unfortunately, the mistress saw this coming and flew up to avoid the incoming strike. This was a mistake as Anya now had a clear shot and fired a poisoned arrow at one of the demoness' wing
The succubus reeled in pain. Her minions went to aid her but Maiev kept them busy while Alleria continued to fire her arrows with the demoness. The succubus quickly landed and used her magics to disorient Alleria. The ranger was kicked into a wall soon after. The succubus then began to drain the high elf's life before she suddenly performed a somersault. The reason was because Anya attempted to slice of the demoness' legs. The dark ranger then quickly drew her bow once more and fired a dark arrow, hitting the succubus in the same wing
The Mistress of Torment was then stabbed from behind by Maiev but even then, the demoness didn't go down and instead, parried the next strike. The succubus then grinned as she spawned five fel illusions behind the death knight and she herself disappeared into the shadows. Covering for their ally, Alleria and Anya quickly stalled an illusion by shooting an arrow before cutting it down. Maiev quickly blinked to safety while the two rangers engaged the images, becoming overwhelmed not that long after
In the meantime, the succubus was slowly draining both of the ranger's energies and heal her own wounds at the same time. Before the demoness could kill her allies, Maiev killed the illusions with her ice magics. "Jump!" the former warden yelled. The two rangers, although curious, barely managed to jump before Maiev quickly unleashed a huge blast of frost omnidirectionally. When they landed, Alleria and Anya gripped their feet as part of it was slightly caught. They weren't the only one caught as near them, all the demons and undead were frozen solid including the Mistress
Before long, the succubus was able to burn her way out of the sheet of ice she was trapped in. After breaking out, it was clear that the attack had inflicted a significant amount of damage as she was bleeding badly. "Aw. That was so naughty. Seems like you girl-" she said but was cut off when Alleria fired an arrow right at her chest. The succubus wasn't even able to defend herself as Anya mimicked her living comrade's actions right and shot at the same area. Still, the demoness didn't go down and tried to cast a spell but Maiev put an end to this by blinking behind the succubus and beheading her
"That was rough." Alleria said as she got down to her knees, Anya helping her get back up
"Tell me about it. Hope the others are having better luck than we are." Anya muttered, knowing that the others need to kill all of the lieutenants
Maiev then noticed a crystal within the corpse of the Mistress of Torment and in the wall on the side of the main structure, she noticed an empty space and based on how it looks, it wasn't made from the fighting. Upon closer inspection, it was in the same shape as the crystal so the former warden put it in the hole. A magic was then released upwards in the direction of the throne room
At that same time, Velen and Khadgar met up with Illidan, who was already trying to breach to the third level and the only entrance to the peak of the temple where Magtheridon resides. The trio attacked their way up until they were forced back by the gate's enchantments
"It would seem that the enchantments are still active." Velen noted
"At least the Broken were able to disable the defenses. This battle would be a different story if we had to deal with the towers." Illidan commented while observing the nearby dead bodies before noticing the magic on the gate fluctuate and get weaker. 'What's going on?' he asked his army
'I found a crystal in one of Magtheridon's lieutenants. Near her chambers was a carving in the wall. If you place the crystal there it releases some sort of energy.' Maiev answered
'I see. You heard her.' Illidan said before turning to his two allies. "The magic on the gate is weakened. We need to find the crystals that are on the lieutenants and use them to open the gates."
Before Velen or Khadgar could respond, they were all forced to move when an artillery round was heading their way, a desperate attempt from an artillery location to end this assault. The mentioned two quickly moved out of the way while Illidan was unfazed and quickly fired an eye beam which destroyed it before it made contact
"You two stay near this area. I'll go find one of the lieutenants and disable the gates." Illidan said and fired a lightning bolt at a few incoming demons
"Alright, Illidan. Take care." Velen said but the lich king already flew down towards the lower level
While Velen and Khadgar merely held their ground, Illidan came across Allari who was busy raiding an armory. The demons, despite their best effort, were unable to hold off Allari for too long since she unleashed her demon form. Since this armory was well hidden in the temple's second level, the security was not as tight as one would expect. This also meant that the only ones that could take anything from the armory were those that were stationed at the temple. After Allari dispatched the last of the remaining demons guards, two infernal suddenly appeared to blindside her but before they could attack, they were suddenly stabbed from behind
"Lord Illidan?" Allari greeted and was surprised by his appearance
"Having fun?" Illidan countered with a small smirk before looking around. "What did you find here?"
"Nothing of too much significance." Allari answered and dropped her demon form. "I have been fighting my way here ever since you went towards the the throne room." she continued and looked around herself. There wasn't really anything worth of note aside from some odd shaped weapons. All of them seemed to be just that except for one, a weapon she was familiar with . "My lord." she called out
Illidan grew curious at her suddenly sounding unsure and walked over. Only then did he understand, it was a weapon shaped like a scythe but made from the same materials as Frostmourne. Without even bothering to ask, Illidan checked the weapon for whatever traps it might contain and to his surprise, he found none. The only thing he learned was that it was a weapon that could directly affect souls like the runeblade. "Strange." the lich king commented
"What is it?" Allari asked
"This scythe is similar to Frostmourne in its power to directly affect souls. However, instead of imprisoning them, it instead forces its victims to comply to its wielder and unlike Frostmourne, this can even affect demons." Illidan replied while grabbing the weapon and tossing it to her, who only wore a look of surprise. "You were the one who found it. It should be you who wields it." he said
"Thank you, my lord." Allari said while sheathing her swords and observing her new weapon. "Pardon, Lord Illidan, but if anyone finds weapon similar to this, would you also let them keep it?" she asked
"Of course." Illidan answered quickly. "After all, that is how I got my own blades. The only exception is Maiev because I already have four blades so I did not necessarily need a fifth one." he said and moved back to the entrance. "Now, let's finish this."
In another part of the temple, Varian, Mograine, Fordring and Turalyon were having their own fight against a large doom guard, larger than his fellows. Unlike the Mistress of Torment, the Master of Pain had all his minions flee the immediate area, fully confident in his own ability to take on three death knights and a paladin on his own
Despite being outnumbered, the doom guard's was able to hold his own due to his own incredible resistance to magic. That is where his perks end because even though he was able to prevent his four enemies from instantly killing him, he was unable to go on the offensive. Against all odds, he was even able to rain down firestorms every now and then, which aided him. His large size also gave him a small advantage in brute strength
In one of the firestorms, Varian got caught up and was slightly burned by the flames. Mograine quickly healed him with a death coil while Fordring and Turalyon kept the doom guard from pressing his luck. Turalyon tried using a hitting the doom guard with holy energy but it didn't do anything significant and was swatted aside. Since that attack would also affect them, all three death knights moved away to avoid it
Mograine quickly tried to cut the demon while Varian distracted him with death coils. Varian's coils barely did anything to the doom guard and he was able to block Mograine but Fordring was already behind him and stabbed him in the back. Responding quickly, the Master of Pain quickly forced Mograine away before bringing down a fist on Fordring. With the demon being a lot heavier than the death knight, Fordring was severely injured to the point of being barely able to move
"Tirion!" Turalyon yelled and tried to use a carefully aimed holy blast
In response, the doom guard merely took to the skies as he figured out that the death knights prefer direct combat and wanted to see if they can do anything against targets that will not go down to a fair fight. Varian tried to heal Fordring with death coil but was forced to erect an anti magic shell around himself as the doom guard rained down another firestorm. Left helpless, Fordring was struck by a large fireball before being brutally finished off by a finger of death which completely destroyed his body
"Damn you, demon!" Turalyon yelled in fury but it merely made the doom guard laugh
"Damn it, we can't hit him in the sky." Varian said before noticing the doom guard prepare another spell
The three of them were helpless as the demon threw down something but instead of doing damage, it merely shrouded the area in darkness
"Where is-" Varian said but was cut off when the doom guard cleaved him with his sword charged in flames
Turalyon and Mograine moved towards where they last heard Varian's voice however, the doom guard merely grabbed Mograine since he couldn't see anything and slammed him right into Turalyon. The Master of Pain then raised his sword, intent on killing them both in a single blow before he was suddenly blasted from behind
The doom guard was surprised at how anyone was able to see through his spell but he was caught off guard again when his sword arm was sliced off and someone took Turalyon and Mograine to safety. The demon was unable to even make a proper counter attack when he felt someone climb on his back and sliced his head off. The Master of Pain's head then fell off to the ground with his body following soon after
"How are they, Kayn?" Altruis asked
"Injured but they'll survive." Kayn answered and helped Altruis clear the darkness. "What about the other two?"
"They're gone. The demon killed them." Altruis answered and began scanning the doom guard's corpse. A crystal soon appeared on the demon's corpse so the demon hunter scanned the room for any place to put it in. He found it on the side of a wall and placed the crystal there, sending another wave of magic upwards
In another area of the temple, Illysanna and Kor'vas fought Mother Shahraz. At first, the battle seemed even with the shivarra being able to perfectly fight two opponents at the same time. That was until the duo unleashed their demonic forms and imbued their own attacks with fel energy, which made it more difficult to fight them off
Having gained flight, Illysanna engaged the shivarra in a direct fight, expertly avoiding being cut into pieces with all six of Shahraz's swords while Kor'vas clung onto the shivarra's back and began hacking away at her. Whenever Shahraz would try to get Kor'vas off, the demon hunter would simply float away and Illysanna takes the distraction to attack
"Enough of this. This isn't fun anymore." Shahraz commented and tried to swing her sword in the air to hit Kor'vas. "Minions, kill them!" she ordered
Demons soon came in through the way the demon hunters and Illysanna quickly unleashed a burst of fel energy to disorient them before she killed them one by one. This allowed Shahraz to duel Kor'vas one on one and they were evenly matched. Her tall size allowing her to prevent Kor'vas from attacking from that high
Kor'vas was holding her own fairly easily. Facing off against such a large foe allowed her to use her mobility to the fullest. Shahraz tried to hide herself in darkness but it did not even slow Kor'vas down one bit as she was able to see her opponent perfectly fine and forced her back into the open. Shahraz then quickly tried firing bolts of fel energy but Kor'vas countered this by flying which allowed her to dodge the bolts and the ensuing explosion. While airborne, the demon hunter threw one of her daggers at the shivarra but to her surprise, Shahraz performed a somersault to dodge and was instead trying to attack Illysanna
Unfortunately for her, Illysanna saw this coming and was wondering why she didn't do it already and was able to move out of the way. "What? How did you?" Shahraz asked when she witnessed Illysanna's quick reaction time. Before the demon hunter could respond, Kor'vas rushed to the back of her neck and stabbed her, forcing her to the ground
"You made a mistake." Illysanna finally answered. "I was simply delaying with the demons so that you would target me." she answered and the shivarra was surprised at how badly she was baited
"Sorry not sorry." Kor'vas muttered coldly before blasting her with an eye beam
Illysanna then saw the crystal that was on the shivarra and like with the others, she put it in a certain carving in the wall, releasing energy upwards
At the throne room gates, Velen and Khadgar were joined by Candrael, Sevis and Drak'thul, engaging the last remaining demons in the area
"The gate's opened." Sevis said
"Magtheridon is on his last stand. Let's end this." Khadgar said and in a few moments, they were able to get rid of the demons
Beyoned the gates, they were met with another small army, Magtheridon's elite guard
"Go back. You will not get to the master." the eredar commander said and motioned for his army to attack
The five of them, along with the small undead and draenei army with them, all prepared for battle. Before anything could happen, a very large infernal suddenly materialized from nearby rocks
"An Abyssal." Velen gasped, having only heard of such constructs but never saw them before
"Leave them to us." Candrael said while looking at Sevis. "The three of you go after Magtheridon. Make sure he doesn't escape." she said
Sevis merely nodded before he began throwing around fel bolts at the spectres. Candrael mimicked his actions soon after. The Abyssal, Supremus, tried to attack but Khadgar noticed this and casted an invisibilty spell for him, Velen and Drak'thul before they moved towards the courtyard at the peak of the temple. The massive infernal looked around and since it had no way to track down the three who went invisible, it instead focused on the demon hunters. A few moments later, they finally arrived at the courtyard that Magtheridon renovated into a throne room and found the pit lord alone
Khadgar quickly dispelled his magics and revealed themselves to their enemy
Magtheridon began a manical laugh at this as he observed who confronted him and was surprised at their identities. "The human being here is hardly a surprise but an orc? Interesting." he noted before looking at the last individual. "And I see you finally decided to stand your ground, prophet. I am surprised that you did not flee the moment Terokkar Forest was under siege. Kil'jaeden will be pleased by this." he said
"Your reign of terror shall end here demon. Your master shall no longer threaten us anymore." Velen said and got into a combat stance
I decided to skip the other parts of this war because I felt that I would simply be writing the same thing over and over and only wanted to write only the important battles. I also wanted this little battle to give the demon hunters some experience in fighting demons with their new powers and I think two chapters showcasing that is enough
For this chapter, it was mostly directed to some slight bad blood between the paladins and more importantly, Allari's weapon. I wasn't able to find anything on where she got her scythe so I decided to add it right here and before anyone complains, no, the scythe is nowhere near as powerful as Frostmourne. They only have similar soul affecting abilities and material but nothing more
I could have gotten the origins of the Broken wrong but it doesn't really matter as they will have no further relevance to the story
Finally, I added Mother Shahraz and Supremus as Magtheridon's lieutenants because really, having a fortress but only two lieutenants sounds pretty stupid to me, which is probably why that last Blood Elf mission in WCIII wasn't too hard. I could have gotten the origins of the Broken Draenei wrong though but it doesn't matter that much since they're dead
