Astrid smiled as she heard the familiar sounds of a raid fill the skies. It had been a few weeks since Snoggletog and her and Hiccup's life returned back to normal, or at least their type of normal.
"Hopefully this one will be easier for us," Hiccup said as Toothless hovered next to her and Stormfly.
"It would be nice," Astrid agreed as she looked down below at the village. For the past few days there has been a raid every night. Luckily they hadn't been too taxing on either of them but Astrid could see that Hiccup was getting tired of it. He didn't say anything but she could see in his face, mainly his eyes, how it was affecting him.
"Shit," she heard Hiccup mutter and she looked over at him but saw that he was looking down at the ground. Astrid followed his gaze and saw that the people below were scurrying around below, removing tarps and what Astrid saw scared her. Below them she saw several traps and catapults being positioned. However, these weren't any normal contraptions, they seemed to be heavy duty equipment.
"Those don't seem like any normal catapults," Astrid pointed out as she glanced over at Hiccup, who had a stone cold expression on his face.
"Because they aren't," Hiccup said as his gaze remained fixed on the traps, "Those are Drago's designs. And they aren't meant to capture, they're meant to kill or severely injure so you can kill them later."
"So what do we do now," Astrid asked as she looked back and forth between the Hiccup and the scenes below.
"We destroy the traps, plain and simple," Hiccup told her as he looked over at her. With a short nod he flicked his helmet down so it covered his face and she did the same. "You go down on the ground, I'll stay in the air and try to disable as many as I can."
"Be careful," Astrid told him and although he had his helmet on, she could tell that he was smiling.
"Always milady," he reassured with a nod and then Astrid motioned for Stormfly to dive to the ground. They landed on the outskirts of the town and Astrid quickly swung out of the saddle and ran into town. She managed to stick to the shadows as she ducked past the raging villagers who were focused on the sky.
"Heads down," she heard someone cry out as the familiar sound of a Night Fury filled the sky. Seconds later the sound of an explosion followed by several cries erupted on the other side of the village. Astrid looked up to see Toothless soar overhead and circle back up in the night sky. She didn't pause as she ran towards the first set of traps which were left unmanned. Astrid jumped onto the first catapult and looked around to see how she could disable the machine. After a few seconds she saw the switch to release the catapults and managed to cut it. Astrid then went down the row and disabled each catapult. She moved onto another set of catapults and managed to take care of them without any trouble.
As she rounded a corner of a house she saw a few people starting to arm a catapult and aim it into the air. She looked up to see that they were trying to focus on Hiccup and Toothless who had their backs to the catapult. Astrid quickly pulled her arm back and sent the blade flying and it embedded itself in the base of the catapult. Her distraction worked as all of their heads turned to face her.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you," Astrid warned as she pulled out her axe.
"Well don't just stand there, get her," one of the men barked out and Astrid waited as three of the four men rushed towards her.
"Well I didn't think this through," Astrid muttered to herself as she pressed the button on her axe and the blades extended. The first man raised his sword high and Astrid quickly kicked out his knee and then hit him on the side of his head with the bottom end of her axe. She didn't have time to rest as the other two men charged at her before their comrade had hit the dirt. These two both swung wildly but Astrid had to block their strikes with the edge of her blade. She pushed forward and sent the two stumbling backwards. Astrid quickly advanced forward and slashed at one of their wrists and they dropped their sword. She turned to face the other villager to see that he was about to swing at her.
Astrid dropped to the ground, dodging the attack, and then spun around and kicked out the man's legs, dropping him to the ground. She didn't hesitate as she got up and turned to the other viking who was now charging at her. He made a move to grab her and Astrid ducked slightly before she grabbed his arm and flipped him over her back. He landed on the other man and both groaned and they remained on the ground.
"Idiots," Astrid heard the fourth man say as he stepped towards her. He then pulled out an axe of his own and he set his feet. Astrid did the same and the two eyed each other as the chaos around them continued. Without saying anything else the two charged each other and a clang of metal rang out as the blades clashed together. Several more clangs and scrapes filled the air and the two swung at each other. The viking managed to disarm Astrid and sent her axe flying a few feet away. She quickly adjusted and kicked the man in the knee and rolled under him to get back to her axe. She heard the man chuckle as they faced each other again as he readjusted his grip on his axe. "Aren't you clever," the man said as the two circled each other.
Astrid remained silent as she just watched the man and waited for his next move. "Where's that pathetic Dragon Master," the man asked.
"How should I know," Astrid said back as she still circled around the man.
"You're his bitch aren't you," the man said back with a smirk and Astrid paused which made the man smile more.
"If only you were as good at fighting as you were talking," Astrid pointed out, "Then maybe you would have a chance." The man growled and then he charged at Astrid who waited for his attack. He swung wildly at her neck which she managed to block but the viking still advanced on her. Astrid only managed to block his attacks as she continued to move backwards before she stumbled and fell onto the dirt. She tried to get up but she felt a heavy force on her chest and she looked up to see the viking standing over her.
"I'm going to enjoy this," the viking said as he stood over her and raised his attack high above his head. Astrid closed her eyes and waited for his attack but instead she heard a loud crash close by them. A loud roar filled the area and Astrid slowly opened her eyes and looked over to see Toothless eyeing down the viking.
"I wouldn't that," a cold voice told the viking and Astrid watched as Hiccup got out of Toothless's saddle and landed on the ground.
"The Dragon Master finally arrives," the viking said as he faced Hiccup. "And why shouldn't I do this," he asked as he held his axe over Astrid. Toothless growled as he took a threatening step forward towards the viking.
"I think you know why," Hiccup told him as he gestured towards Toothless.
"I'm not scared of you devil," the viking growled as he took a step towards Hiccup and Toothless.
"You should be," Hiccup told him and then he made a gesture with his hands and Toothless nodded. A low noise could be heard from Toothless and then he opened his mouth before he shot a shot of plasma at the viking. It hit the man in the chest and he went flying backwards before he landed on the ground with a grunt. Astrid waited for a few seconds but the man did not get up. "Are you alright," she heard Hiccup ask and she looked over to see him crouching next to her with his riding helmet up.
"Yeah," she said quickly as she looked back towards the viking who still seemed motionless. "Is he dead," she asked quietly, after several seconds of silence she looked back over towards Hiccup who had a cold look on his face.
"No," he said slowly, "But he should be," he added with a flare of anger in his voice.
"I'm alright," she told him but he didn't look at her as he continued to look at the man still laying in the dirt. "Hey, I'm alright," she told him as she sat up and grabbed his arm as she lifted her helmet.
"I just don't like seeing you getting hurt," he said in a soft voice.
"I can take a hit you know," she told him with a smile, to which he had a smile of his own.
"I know you can," he said, "Doesn't mean I like to see you take them." Astrid chuckled as she rested on the ground. Somehow in all of this chaos during a raid, they were having a simple conversation as if they were at home.
"Come on," she said as she slowly stood up and he did the same, "We still have a raid to take care of." She lightly stood on her toes and kissed him before she put her helmet back down and looked at his surprised face. All he did was chuckle and shake his head as he put his helmet down and went back over to Toothless. With one last look at the viking who attacked her Astrid then ran off into the rest of the village ready to be over with this raid.
Astrid was focused on her book as she heard Hiccup groan as he rolled over in his bed. It was close to midday now and he was still sleeping. He deserved it though as the two were busy with the raid up into the early hours of the morning.
"Feel alright," Astrid called out to him but he didn't respond as he just groaned again. She smiled as she closed her book and set it on the table as she got up from her seat. She walked over to him as he was now lying on his back but he covered his eyes with his arm. Astrid looked over him and watched the slow rise and fall of his chest. "What hurts," she asked as she sat on his bedside.
"It would be easier to say what didn't hurt," he muttered as he uncovered his eyes and looked up at her.
"Sit up for a second," she eventually told him and he slowly hesitated but eventually sat up a bit. Astrid moved over so that she was behind him and then she gestured for him to lean back. He rested his head in her lap and then she began to massage his shoulders. He hummed happily as she eased the tension in his shoulders. "What are we going to do," Astrid asked once she finally stopped massaging his shoulders.
"Do about what," Hiccup asked as he slowly shifted his head up so that he could look up at her.
"The raids, the dragons, Berk, everything," Astrid slowly listed off as she looked down at him.
"I don't know," he said softly after a few seconds of silence and Astrid just nodded as she looked out towards the horizon. She was lost in thought until she felt a squeeze on her hand as she looked back to see Hiccup staring at her. He shifted around so that he propped himself on his arm and was now laying on his side. "I'll get you back home," he reassured her, "I promise you that."
"I know," she told him as she looked down at her hands which were folded in her lap. "I just want to live a normal life for more than a week."
"Being with me and wanting normal," Hiccup said with a chuckle, "Those two are more opposites than living on Berk and having a dragon utopia."
"A girl can dream," Astrid told him as she leaned down to kiss him. As she went to stand back up she felt him grab her arm and stop her.
"Stay," he told her and she looked at him to see a pleading look on his face.
"I got things to do," she told him but he didn't change his mind as he seemed to be begging now.
"Besides reading your book, what else do you have," he asked her. "Besides they can wait," he added and Astrid sighed as she realized he wasn't going to let her go.
"Alright," she told him to which he smiled and shifted so that she could lay next to him. She rested her head on his chest and even though she couldn't see him she could tell that he was smiling. "You're such a dork," she told him and she heard him chuckle softly.
"And you love it," he told her as he took her hand and intertwined their fingers. Astrid just shook her head as she felt a smile grow on her face. Somehow Hiccup convinced her to lay in bed for the whole afternoon and into the evening. She finally got up to make dinner to which Hiccup finally got up and went to shower. He returned from his shower and then stood in the kitchen as she continued to prepare their meal. Astrid had to stop a few times when Hiccup walked up and wrapped his arms around her midsection and rested his chin on her shoulders.
"If you keep this up we won't eat until midnight," she told him.
"I don't mind that," he muttered and Astrid just shook her head.
"Well I do," she told him, "Don't you know that if your girlfriend is unhappy, you'll be unhappy." Hiccup reluctantly let her go and let her finish up the rest of the meal. The two ate their meal and Hiccup went back over to his bed. Astrid eventually joined him with her book in hand as she joined him. The two stayed like that for about an hour when Astrid heard a loud series of roars outside. Both she and Hiccup looked outside to see the dragons were restless and were showing signs of going out on another raid.
"We can't have one relaxing night," Hiccup muttered as he continued to look outside.
'Well hopefully this one will be quick," she told him as she closed her book and walked over to the cabinet to grab her riding gear. It took her a few minutes but eventually she got changed and walked into the main entrance to get Stormfly situated. Once her saddle was secure and Astrid made sure she had everything she needed they walked outside. Hiccup and Toothless were standing outside and waiting for them. "Where are we headed," she asked as he stood next to Hiccup but he didn't say anything right away. "Hiccup's what's wrong," she asked as she stepped around to look at him. He had a serious look on his face and it didn't change as he looked at her.
"Judging by the way they are flying," he said slowly, "We're going to Berk."
Ayo, it's me, hopefully everyone enjoyed the chapter and how it turned out. Couple things, firstly I want to say a quick thanks to the follows and favorites. Really surprised by the amount of interest shown in this. I honestly thought it would get no more than twentyish people and kinda fall off. I say it again and again but thank you it means a lot to see it do well, at least in my book. Also I apologize for such a long delay in between the long period of no updates. Wrapping up finals and then some other stuff just kicked my ass pretty good and I wanted to enjoy my time off a bit. I am doing some little things here and there over the summer but nothing too much to cause a long delay again. Obviously, no promises but I will try my best to get some stuff out A.S.A.P.
Also in terms of the story I know where I want to go with it but there are some gaps in between where it is now and where I want it to go. I don't want to rush it so I'm trying to put some things out and just kinda go from there. So if some aspects seem a bit rushed or forced it will hopefully be better in the next few chapters. I am confident in hitting at least twenty chapters, maybe confident enough to say twenty-five but of course no promises. As always if you have any thoughts, reviews, and/or comments please leave them as they are always helpful and peace out!
