Izuku and I trained under All Might for two weeks before the last week of summer vacation. After the initial excitement of me learning the new applications of my quirk wore off, All Might gave me a scolding for knocking over one of the protected trees in a national park. Admittedly, I felt really bad. I was caught up in the moment and wanted to impress my mentor, but I admitted fault and promised I wouldn't overturn any more nationally sacred flora. As for Izuku, he had a definite control of One For All... at 1%. Not incredibly impressive, but he had learned to push himself to 5% before the physical stress that the energy put on him made it too difficult to handle. Even though his current abilities were incredibly underwhelming, that little command over One For All still made him someone to be reckoned with. The best way I had to describe it was that he had the physical capabilities of an olympic athlete that was on performance drugs, and the raw power of a basic hydraulic press. I was proud of my brother for making it this far; he was already leagues ahead of where he would be currently in the story.
The last week before school started, All Might told us we had worked hard and he was proud of us again for putting in so much effort and really taking our new lives to heart. He then informed us that he would have to take care of work-related things for the last week before the semester, and encouraged us to just enjoy ourselves for the rest of the break. I truly wanted to continue training, but I was tired, and a week off sounded too enticing to turn up. So Izuku and I accepted and spent our fleeting summer doing things we enjoyed. We played Mechanoid Rising, went to the beach with Inko, went on an actual hike, and overall were just pleased to let our muscles relax for a few days.
Even though it was a whole week, the start of school was upon us before we knew it. I was actually able to sleep the night before by some miracle, so I was getting ready with Izuku on time in the morning. We got dressed in our new uniform and packed all of the supplies we would need. I was out the door first and waited as I heard Inko and Izuku have an exchange.
"Izuku, you're all set?"
"Yeah…"
"Are you sure? You didn't just pack action figures, right?"
Izuku responded in an aggravated tone. "I have everything! Now I gotta go, I don't wanna be late!"
"Izuku!" Inko quickly interjected, smiling.
"What?"
Inko teared up, but smiled through her emotions. "I'm really proud of you, son."
Izuku's aggravation changed into joy. "I'll see you soon!"
I smiled to him after he walked out and caught up to me.
"I told you, bro. Everything's gonna change."
He returned the smile and said thoughtfully. "Yeah…"
After responding he looked at his phone. "Oh, crap! But not if we're late! Come on we gotta get going!"
I don't know how we managed to get up on time but still nearly be late, but we arrived at UA sprinting into the halls while frantically searching for our room.
"Why are all the doors so massive?! Do giants go here?!" Izuku exclaimed to me as we ran through the hall.
"I don't know but with the way they're obnoxiously labeled you would think finding our room would be easier!"
After listening to Izuku practically chant "1-A" repeatedly we finally made it to the room.
Izuku looked determined at the oversized entrance. "The most promising students in the country are waiting behind this door…"
He was right, but only I knew how incredibly wrong he was. To say that talented students were behind the door was a grave understatement. Behind that door were men and women we would fight and nearly die with. The rest of our education was hardly the only thing that started in class 1-A. In that homeroom class, our destiny was about to begin.
"Oh crap! What if Kacchan and that guy with the glasses are in here?!" Izuku interrupted my thoughts.
"Screw them! If either one of them messes with you, beat their ass! We've come too far to be scared of some prick with motor legs and a kid that throws tantrums about everything." I promptly responded, knowing full and well that both Ida and Bakugo were in that room.
"Y-you're right!" Izuku steeled his resolve. "Besides, they might not even be in the same class as us…"
I just smirked and opened the door, allowing the scene to set itself.
"Take your feet off of that desk, now!" Ida scolded Bakugo.
Katsuki replied lamely with an amused grin. "Huh?"
"It's the first day and you're already disrespecting this academy by scuffing school property, you cretin!"
"You're kidding me, right? Your old school put a stick up your ass, or were you born with it?"
Izuku looked on in horror as life once again seemingly did him a disservice.
"Just my luck…"
Ida regained his composure and addressed Bakugo once more.
"Let's start over, I'm Tenya Ida from the Somei Private Academy." He attempted politeness.
"Somei, huh?" Bakugo said sarcastically. "So you must think you're better than me? I'm gonna have fun tearing you a new one!"
Ida physically recoiled in shock. "You would threaten me?! Your own classmate! Are you sure you're in the right place?!"
Bakugo just scoffed and ignored Ida, at which point they both turned to see us at the door.
Ida spoke up. "It's them…"
The whole class turned to us like deer in headlights.
Izuku froze up a bit and nervously spoke. "Uh, hiiii…"
"Sup?" I held up a peace sign to the room, overviewing my classmates.
I kept looking repeatedly and something seemed off. Then I finally landed my eyes on the two empty seats. One for Izuku, and the other… I had to compose myself and not squeal at my excitement. Mineta wasn't there! He must've been the lowest ranked in both classes and couldn't enter! I was ecstatic that I wouldn't have to deal with him ever. Caught up in my own thoughts, I nearly flinched when Ida walked up in front of Izuku and I.
"Good morning!" He stated. "My name is Tenya Ida from-"
Izuku interrupted. "Y-yeah, I know!" He paused for a moment to gather his thoughts, still nervous.
"I'm Izuku Midoriya and this is my brother, Ryoshi. It's super nice to meet you!"
"Hey, Ida, haven't seen you since you called my hair unkempt." I added.
Ida winced at the thought. "Ah, yes. The Midoriya brothers. You both realized there was something more to the practical exam, didn't you? You both must be very perceptive, and I completely misjudged you. I admit, as a student you're both far superior to me!"
Izuku was about to say something but I spoke first.
"Chill out, Ida. You seem like a really cool guy. Nobody has to be superior to anyone, we're all just doing our best." I smiled at him.
He looked shocked, but before we could continue our exchange a sudden cutesy voice interjected itself.
"Hey, I recognize that messed up hair! Falling boy!" Ochako Uraraka made her presence known.
Izuku stood as though he just watched himself win the lottery or lightning strike, eyes wide and mouth slightly agape.
Ochako continued. "So you did pass the exam! Not that I'm surprised, that punch was amazing! One hit and it was down!"
"O-oh hey, hi! Oh gosh, so uh, I should probably be thanking you for going in and talking to them... " Izuku rambled.
"Huh?" Ochako looked intrigued. "How'd you know about that?"
"Oh I-"
I cut him off once more. "Hey wait you saved him from falling, right!? Wow, it's so nice to meet you, I'm Ryoshi and this is my brother Izuku!"
"Oh, wow! You guys made it into the same class, that's crazy!" Ochako continued happily. "So what do you think we're doing today besides orientation? I wonder what our teachers are like! I can't wait to meet everybody!"
The conversation was then halted by the jarring voice of Shota Aizawa.
"If you're just here to make friends then you can pack up your stuff now."
The edgy and intimidating voice was sorely juxtaposed by the strange man laying in a sleeping bag on the floor. Everyone but me looked on in shock at Aizawa.
"Welcome to UA's hero course." He partially unzipped the sleeping bag to sip a juice pack before standing. "It took eight seconds before you all shut up, that's not gonna work."
Aizawa doffed the bag to reveal his hero outfit before continuing.
"Time is precious, rational students would understand that." He waited a few seconds before addressing the entire class. "Hello, I'm Shota Aizawa… your teacher."
That triggered a response from everyone in the room, a mixture of shock and genuine confusion.
"Right, let's get to it. Put these on and head outside." He brought out a UA training uniform.
I grabbed it and smiled at the man I knew to be pro hero Eraserhead.
"Yes sir!"
After the other students took uniforms as well, we were led to the training ground, where much to everyone's horror, Aizawa informed us about his Quirk Apprehension test. He enlightened us that they weren't tied to the regular academic plan at UA, so he could teach his class however he wished. After lecturing on how he thought quirks should be viewed differently than the ministry of education currently does he explained how the test was going to work. We would each participate in eight physical assessments where we would use our quirks to do the best we could. The assessments were: 50-meter dash, grip strength, standing long jump, repeated side steps, ball throw, distance run, seated toe-touch, and sit ups. Of course, he left the twist ending for last that the student who was ranked lowest would be expelled. I knew it to be a "rational deception," as he called it, but I also knew it was still scary for everyone involved.
The test went by a lot less flashy than in the show. Izuku could control a bit of his power already, so he wasn't tanking on every assessment. Aizawa didn't need to stop him from using his quirk, but he looked very skeptical of Izuku's abilities the entire time. I was doing pretty well, I thought.
I did my 50-meter dash in 5.27 seconds using my new abilities. I had taken to calling the solid light I manifested around my legs "Light Greaves." For the grip strength, I summoned my light gauntlets and compressed the measuring device until the gauntlet cracked under pressure. At that point it displayed 8,600 kg, which was about 10 tons of force applied. I was shocked the device was still in one piece. After the grip test, I was able to do 70 side steps within a minute and clear the pit in the standing long jump.
However, as soon as the ball throw event came up, I could see Bakugo already boiling in rage. Seeing Izuku actually go through the exam with a newfound quirk was killing him. I had my turn and launched the ball to 262.5 meters with my light gauntlet, and then Izuku was up next. I saw him turn up the power to 5% of One For All as the ball rocketed from his grip into the stratosphere. He shook and fell to his knees as Aizawa showed his result to be 352.7 meters. He clutched his arm and smiled widely, and then we heard it.
"HEY!" Bakugo was sprinting at Izuku. "Deku you bastard, tell me how you did that or you're dead!"
Izuku yelped in panic. Aizawa attempted to restrain Bakugo, but I was faster. I came in from the side at breakneck speed and rammed Katsuki in the side with my greave. He coughed and rolled to the side from the impact. I then felt myself forcefully restrained and my power left my body. Aizawa's scarf wrapped around Bakugo and I, with him still on the ground.
"My scarf is a capture weapon made out of carbon fiber and a special metal alloy." Our teacher spoke.
Bakugo and I gave no heed to his words, both struggling to go and beat the other.
"Stand down!" Aizawa commanded. "It would be wise to avoid making me use my quirk so much… It gives me serious dry eye."
The class unanimously agreed that was a very unfortunate side effect to such an amazing power.
Aizawa unrestrained us and returned our powers. "You're wasting my time now. Whoever's next step up."
Bakugo and I still scowled at each other, but went our separate ways. I followed Izuku over to Ochako.
"Oh my gosh are you okay?!"
Izuku quickly responded. "Y-yeah, I'm fine!"
"You really thrashed him, Ryoshi! Why'd you hit him like that?" Ochako questioned.
I looked at Izuku, who was looking back at me with a mix of gratitude and concern.
"He's a bully. I've been waiting for an opportunity to hit that bastard. He thinks he's God's gift to this world but he's just another asshole."
The conversation essentially died there, as it was obvious I had some aggression I wanted to work out. Lucky for me, we still had three more assessments. I did well on them, but it was nothing to brag about and honestly they were just regular boring exercises even with quirks. We made it to the end where Aizawa had us gather in front of him.
"Alright, time to give you your results. I've ranked you all from best to worst; you should probably have a good idea of your standing already. I'll just pull up the whole list, it's not worth going over each individual's score."
After finishing his thought, he pulled up a hologram of a scoreboard.

Aizawa continued after showing it for a few seconds.
"And I was lying, no one's going home. That was just a rational deception to make sure you gave it your all!"
Izuku stood smiling, unable to take his eyes off of his name in the 6th place, while everyone else was appalled by Aizawa's proclamation.
Momo spoke up. "I'm surprised the rest of you didn't figure that out… sorry, I guess I probably should've said something."
Everyone looked at Momo in disbelief, aside from me. I just smiled at her and gave a thumbs up. Some of the others talked amongst themselves before Aizawa cut in once more.
"That's it, we're done for the day. Pick up a syllabus in the classroom. Read over it before tomorrow morning."
After some time, we went back inside and retrieved our usual uniforms and syllabi. The rest of the day went by pretty quickly, getting acquainted with our teachers and uninteresting regular school subjects. Finally 3 o'clock came and Izuku and I left together.
"Man, today was crazy. I can't believe Aizawa gave us that huge test on the first day!" Izuku started.
"I can. The guy definitely takes this seriously and wants us to do well in the future, so he's giving us a hard time now where the consequences are minimal. No do-overs when you're fighting a villain."
Izuku nodded in agreement. "Yeah, I guess I can see that…"
"Hey! Izuku, Ryoshi!" Ida came up to us. "We didn't get much of a chance to talk earlier today. Would you two mind if I accompanied you?"
"Nah, come on. What'd you wanna chat about?" I responded.
"I was a bit concerned by Mr. Aizawa's approach to class… but I trust the school's judgement; UA is the top program... Even so, lying is downright immoral."
I nodded once more. "Yeah, I get it. Me and Izuku were just talking about that. I guess it's another way of preparing us. Villains and criminals aren't gonna give you the truth, you have to be ready for anything."
Ida looked over with a contemplative face. "That's an excellent point, I suppose I hadn't considered that.'
Before we could continue we had yet another interruption. A high-pitched
"Heyyy!" rang out from behind and we turned to see a smiling Ochako running towards us.
"Wait up you guys! Are you going to the station?! I'll join you!"
Ida addressed her first. "Oh, you're the infinity girl?"
She nodded happily. "I'm Ochako Uraraka! Let's see, you are Tenya Ida, and oh yeah, you introduced yourselves earlier! Izuku and Ryoshi Midoriya! Hey, why did Bakugo call you Deku if your name is Izuku?"
I scowled and spoke up. "It's like I said earlier. He's a stupid bully, and he's called Izuku that his whole life as an insult."
"That's unsportsmanlike…" Ida chimed in.
Ochako looked at Izuku again. "Oh! I didn't realize that! I'm sorry!"
I cut her off before she could continue saying Deku was a cute name.
"Yeah it's okay, he's tougher than that! Izuku here is the strongest person I know, no amount of dumb name-calling could bring him down!"
Izuku was already blushing from just being near Ochako, and it only deepened from my complement.
Izuku tried to push it aside. "Aw, come on, Ryoshi, cut it out! I'm not invincible or anything!"
My eyes widened and something just clicked. It seemed stupid but I was absolutely about to suggest it anyways.
"That's what your hero name should be! Invincible! Think about it!"
"Wow, that sounds actually really cool!" Ochako added.
Ida commented as well. "It certainly gives an impression that you're a powerful hero, and from what I've seen you certainly fit the bill, Izuku."
"But guys, I-"
I cut him off again. "Too late! We're now officially talking to the strongest hero, Invincible!"
We all laughed and continued our chats on the way to the station. I could see that Izuku was already feeling fulfilled by his new life, and that made me happy. It was a long road ahead of us, but we had just made a few friends to back us up along the way.
- Author's Notes: -
- Hey guys! I wanted to let y'all know that I'm currently in the process of getting a new job and moving, so updates may be slow but I'll still strive to have a chapter out each week.
- Sorry if this chapter seemed a little lackluster, like I said, I'm having to do a lot in my life at the moment, I'll do my best to make the next chapter better quality.
- I only changed the Quirk Apprehension test results to have Izuku and Ryoshi in a higher position, but I would have liked to change the results entirely based on what I think they should have been. I tried, but I honestly didn't have enough time.
- So I get a LOT of suggestions for Ryoshi's abilities, and all of them are super intriguing and creative! Unfortunately I can't implement all of them but I want everyone to know I appreciate them and will try to implement as many as I can that fit with my planned narrative.
- I had a couple of people mention that All Might was surprisingly lax about Ryoshi essentially destroying a tree in a national park, and I agree it was a little out of character. I touched a bit on it in this chapter in attempts to remedy that, but I admit that the situation slipped my mind last chapter. I'll try to be more vigilant in the future.
- Thank you all so much for the support, please be sure to leave reviews/comments if it suits you, as I love reading and interacting with them!
- That's all I got, I hope everyone has a great week!
Review Responses
- Xenozip - I actually got this exact suggestion on AO3! It's definitely a good one, and since I've thought about it, I'll likely go for that. I wasn't sure at first, but the idea has really grown on me!
- Guest Reader who mentioned "running over Kacchan" - I totally agree, and don't you worry: Katsuki's getting what he deserves soon.
- d1n0s - Wow! A lot of reviews, thanks so much for your interest and support! I don't think I'll be making Ryoshi ever reach the speed of light, however, I hadn't considered your other suggestions before as potential ideas and will most likely be incorporating them in some form or another! Great creativity! Please continue!
- Gouravsilentreader - Thank you so much for the support! Apologies if updates may be slow, but they are sure to come. I won't be giving up on this story!
