Part 1
Sero stared up at the sign on the building. Hooters. Of all places for the guys to choose, they would pick Hooters. He'd just closed and cleaned up the juice bar for the day when Kaminari and Mineta approached, wanting to hang out. They even offered to pay for dinner. Although he was 'health-nut Hanta' as Jiro called him, he wasn't one to pass up free food. So he'd agreed to go out for a guys' night. If only he'd known they'd be eating at Hooters.
While he wasn't opposed to eating out, Hooters wasn't his ideal place. The food was okay, a little pricier than most places with similar quality, but it wasn't the food that deterred him. No. What made him stay away from Hooters were the waitresses. Sure, there were some attractive women who worked at Hooters, and Sero was certain that was the reason Mineta and Kaminari chose to go, but he was well aware that waitresses worked off tips. Hooters waitresses did whatever they could to ensure they got tipped well.
"Explain to me why you guys chose to come here?" Sero said, looking at Mineta and Kaminari. He half expected them to come up with some bullshit excuse to cover their true intentions.
Kaminari gave him a shy smile. Seemed like he had a lie ready. "Well, you see-"
" - I got intel that there are some new hot babes working tonight! So we're going to go check them out!" Mineta said with a fiery passion.
That answer didn't surprise Sero in the slightest. Mineta was a creep, everyone knew that. The fact that he was still allowed within 1000 feet of Hooters was what surprised him most. He felt sorry for the poor girl that would get stuck serving them tonight. The little guy was clearly into women for their looks. Not to say Sero didn't care about appearance, but he liked women who had more going for them than just their looks.
"Don't do anything to embarrass us," Kirishima said as the group advanced inside.
Somehow the two managed to talk Kirishima into tagging along as well. Sero was starting to think that he and Kirishima were just being used by the two idiots to hide their intentions.
Inside the restaurant was busy. The tables were full of guys enjoying their meals while women walked around carrying plates. A sign at the hostess counter told them to wait to be seated.
"Wow, they sure are busy," Kirishima remarked, noticing the lack of empty tables.
Mineta started hyperventilating as he watched the waitresses walk by. "The new girls must be some real hotties."
Sero thought he saw foam forming in the corner of his mouth. "Dude, you have problems," he said as a man made his way over to them.
Dressed in a white button-up and black slacks with his long blonde hair pulled back, was none other than the manager, Hizashi Yamada. "You!" he said, stopping in front of Mineta. "You have been nothing, but trouble the last few times you've come in here. Always touching or saying something to one of my girls," he said, grabbing Mineta's shoulders.
The other three looked at each other before looking at Mineta. This didn't come as a shock to them.
"The only reason I haven't kicked you out yet is because you're one of Shota's boys. You get one last chance. Otherwise I'm banning you. Permanently," Yamada warned, narrowing his eyes at the smaller man.
"You can't do that!"
"I can and I will." Standing up straight, Yamada looked at the other three. "Let's get you guys seated," he said, his demeanor doing a 180. Grabbing some menus he gestured for them to follow.
He walked over to a table by the windows and set some menus down. "Have a seat," he said before placing a hand on Mineta's shoulder. "She's one of our new girls, so you better be good."
Yamada let go of Mineta and walked away. Sero sat down next to Kirishima and picked up one of the menus. He glanced casually over his options, ignoring the human horndog sitting in front of him.
"You hear that boys? We got one of the new girls!" Mineta said in a hushed whisper. He and Kaminari seemed excited about it.
Sero rolled his eyes. It was sad and disgusting to watch.
He noticed the song on the radio had changed and was now playing 'Dinero'. It had to be the umpteenth time he'd heard it that day as it played in the mall all the time.
Out of the corner of his eye he could see a figure approach their table. He saw Mineta get excited, shaking Kaminari as she approached.
"Evening boys. I'm Yumi and I'll be your waitress tonight. Can I get you started with some drinks?" a sweet little voice said.
"I'll take a rootbeer," Kirishima said, looking up from his menu.
"I'll have a coke," Kaminari said, happily content.
Sero had to respect Kaminari. Unlike Mineta, when it came to girls the guy just liked looking. It never went further than that. Overall, he was harmless.
"I'll have water," Sero said, not looking up from his menu.
"Come on Hanta. Live a little," Kirishima said, nudging him in the side playfully.
He rolled his eyes. "Okay, I'll have coke as well."
Mineta seemed to be casually reaching around the girl, hand extended. Probably to grab her ass. The pervert.
"I think I'll have-"
"-I suggest if you want to go home with both hands to jerk off tonight, you pull it back and behave yourself," the same sweet voice warned.
The whole table looked at Mineta as he pulled back his hand and sat up straight. The girl put one hand on the table and leaned in towards Mineta.
It was only now that Sero looked up at their server.
Damn.
Hot. Sexy. Gorgeous. Those words didn't do her justice. She was a tiny little thing, about 5'4. Her long sapphire blue hair was pulled back into a high ponytail, her amethyst locked onto the pervert in front of her. Sero could understand why Mineta had been excited initially. She had an hourglass body that was perfectly balanced with the smallest waist Sero had ever seen on a woman. Her uniform, the standard tank top and neon orange shorts with stockings, did absolutely nothing, but enhance her body shape. A sight like this should've been illegal.
Sero's mind froze as she got in Mineta's face. He couldn't help but let his eyes wander just a bit south.
"I know about you, and I'm not taking your shit. So, unless you want me to go back into the kitchen and grab the rustiest knife I can find and remove each finger as slowly and painfully as I possibly can, you better not give me any trouble. Trust me, I would, and Mr. Yamada wouldn't stop me." Her voice didn't deter from the same sweet note.
The color from Mineta's face drained as she pulled herself off the table.
"Now, what would you like to drink?"
"C-coke."
Writing down their drink orders, Yumi gave them a smile. "I'll be right back with those for you guys," she said before turning and walking away.
Once she was a safe distance from the table, Kirishima and Kaminari bursted out laughing.
"I've never seen your face go so white before," Kaminari said, tears running down his face from the display they had just seen.
"You had that coming," Kirishima told him, as Mineta seemed to regain his composure.
"She's just playing hard to get," he said, trying to sound confident.
Kaminari chuckled as he looked back at his menu. "I don't think so."
Yumi returned to the table carrying a tray of drinks. Giving each of the guys their drinks, she held onto the tray as she took a notepad out of her apron.
"Are you guys ready to order?"
"I'll take the fried fish tacos," Kirishima said, closing his menu. Root Beer and fish tacos seemed like a good combination.
Yumi wrote it down and looked at Kaminari.
"Can I get the kids chicken sliders?" he asked.
"You sure, sweetie?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Nah, Denki, that's the kids menu. Order something off the big boy menu," Kirishima joked, having a sip of his soda.
Kaminari blushed. "I'll have the philly cheesesteak sandwich with curly fries."
She looked at Mineta. "And you?"
"I'll have the Home Run Burger, with a side of your number, please," he said with cocky confidence.
"Swing and a miss," she told him, as she wrote down their orders. "That's strike two, buddy." She looked at Sero. "And what will you have?"
"Baja shrimp tacos," he said, handing her the menu.
Sure she was cute and had a spunky attitude that Sero found entertaining, but in the end she wasn't his type. He wanted more from his women than a pretty face.
Writing down all the orders and taking the menus, Yumi walked away from the table.
Their food was brought out half an hour later. She only stopped by the table to see if they needed any refills. The guys had a good conversation. Well, at least the three of them did. Mineta spent most of the evening looking at the girls as they passed by. When they were done with their meals, Yumi came over to the table.
"Would anyone like some dessert before I get your bill?" she asked, gathering the dishes in the middle of the table.
"You. Slathered in caramel sauce," Mineta said as he ogled her. The whole table cringed as he said that.
WHAM!
Before they knew it, Yumi slammed her serving tray over Mineta's head.
"And that's strike three."
The sound of the tray connecting with Mineta's head carried over the restaurant and soon Hizashi was at their table.
"What happened?!"
It didn't take much to figure it out. Mineta was holding his head while Yumi stood there, hand on her hip with the cracked serving tray.
"What did I tell you?!" he said, grabbing Mineta's arm.
"Me!? She attacked me!" he tried saying, looking to the guys for backup.
"He provoked her. I can't say I blame her for what happened," Kirishima said, shaking his head. Kaminari and Sero both nodded in agreement.
Hizashi yanked Mineta from his seat and started dragging him towards the door. "What did I tell you?" Mineta's response was lost in the crowd.
"Well, I guess I'm stuck covering the meal," Kaminari said with a sigh. The two of them were supposed to split it.
"I'll be back with your bill," she said, prepared to walk away.
Finishing off his soda Sero looked at her. "You know I don't think it's fair that they don't give you guys calculators or something to help you."
Yumi looked at him. "Excuse me?"
Kaminari and Kirishima tensed up. After what they had just witnessed with Mineta, it didn't seem wise to push her buttons.
"I'm just saying that, I'm surprised they expect you girls to do all this math in your head, and it's -"
" - So because I'm a woman I can't do math?" she asked, hand on her hip.
The table went silent. Sero shut his mouth, unsure of how to respond to that.
"Well let me try. With all four meals, the three cokes and one rootbeer, your total amounts to seventy-seven dollars and ninety-five cents. But taking into account the twenty-percent tip you're going to pay as compensation for being a total dick to me, your total will be ninety-three fifty-four," she said, with a slight shrug of her shoulders.
Kaminari and Kirishima snickered as Sero's mouth dropped.
"If you want, you can also dish out an extra ten dollars for two hundred milligram over-the-counter ibuprofen that I'll most likely have to buy for the giant headache I'm going to get," she continued as she picked up the dishes from the table. "You know, from doing all of that math using my brain. It really hurts," she said in a mocking pouty voice, before turning around and walking away from the table.
Sero was silent as his friends burst out laughing. He said nothing when Yumi returned just a few moments later, carrying the bill.
"Would you look at that? I was right. Guess I didn't need the calculator after all," she said, showing Sero the bill. "I could tell you how much it would cost you to get a new attitude, but you don't look like the kind of guy with loaded pockets so I'll save myself the brainpower. Have a good evening, boys." She set the bill down and walked away.
Laughing again at his friend's expense, Kaminari reached for the bill. "Call her back. I need her to tell me how much a forty percent tip is, because that burn was worth it!"
"Shut up," Sero muttered, reaching for his wallet and pulling out some cash. Although Kaminari had offered to pay, he felt bad that he was stuck paying for everything on his own. Taking out a few $20's he set them on the table.
Kaminari was surprised. "Dude you don't have to-"
" - I insist. Not fair you got stuck covering everything because Mineta can't control himself." Sero wasn't about to make the poor kid pay everything, especially the tip, when he'd been the one to open his mouth.
Kaminari thought about it and nodded. Counting out what Sero had put out, Kaminari took out the remainder of the cash. There was at least $120 on the table, an extra tip for the sick burn she'd given Sero.
"Honestly, why do we still hang out with Mineta? He causes trouble wherever we go," Kirishima asked as the guys all got up from the table and left the restaurant.
While Kaminari and Kirishima talked about why they still hung around Mineta, Sero thought about the comment he made. While he never meant anything by it originally, he could understand why she would have taken offense to it. Walking back into the mall the guys hung around the food court, talking for another hour before the mall closed. When Kaminari and Kirishima left him, Sero contemplated what to do. He had been thinking about what happened at Hooters and knew he had to apologize. Walking to his car, he drove it over to Hooters. Getting out, he leaned against the car and waited.
Hooters closed an hour after the mall closed. It was nearly midnight by the time he saw any of the girls leaving; three hours had gone by since his encounter with Yumi. Looking at the girls as they walked out, he finally spotted Yumi. She was now wearing an oversized hoodie that did a good job of covering up her uniform, and had changed out of her heels into some white converse shoes.
Yumi was staring at her phone, checking the bus schedule, when she heard someone approaching. She looked up. Upon seeing Sero she rolled her eyes and walked past him.
"Go away," she said, paying him no attention. She was still close enough to the restaurant that if she screamed she knew someone would hear her.
"Hey, wait! I wanted to tell you I'm sorry!" Sero told her, grabbing her hand to stop her.
She turned around and pulled her hand away. "For what? Assuming that my intelligence was limited by my gender?"
Sero shoved his hands in his pocket, and looked at the ground. "I mean...kind of."
"So you're kind of sorry," she said, giving him a look and crossing her arms.
"No! I mean…" he sighed, not sure how to say it without sounding like a total idiot. "I thought, maybe...I dunno...I assumed -"
Yumi looked at him. She really didn't have the time to wait around for slow answers. "Why, if not because I'm a woman?"
"Well...you're a waitress."
Yumi raised an eyebrow, taken aback by what he had said. "Because that's SO much better."
Sero rubbed the back of his neck. This wasn't going how he had hoped it would. "I was wrong to think you're like the typical -"
"-Oh, so I'm different from other girls, and that's why it's acceptable for me to be smart. Do you hear yourself? Like...at all?!" She was failing to understand how exactly this was an apology.
Sero stared at her. She seemed more offended now than she'd been before.
Yumi put her hands on her hips. "Smart servers aren't exactly a rarity. Emily? She's a biochemistry major. She works here part-time so she can feed herself. Caitlin is working on a novel series she'd been writing for the past six months. Jennifer runs a small business on Etsy selling hand-crafted pottery when she's not earning as many tips as she can to buy art supplies. I'm not smart because I'm special. And I'm not dumb because I'm a woman. If I were a man you never would've spoken to me the way you did."
He sighed, scratching the back of his head. "You're right." It was now Yumi's turn to be quiet, surprised by what he'd said. "I really am sorry. I was completely wrong about you. About...all of you. Please let me make it up to you."
She stared at him. His apology seemed genuine.
A lightbulb went off in her head. "Who told you when I get off work?" she asked, glaring at him. She didn't recall telling him, nor seeing him ask any of the girls.
Sero blinked, confused. "No one. I just...waited out here until I saw you."
Yumi looked at him, wide-eyed. She tried to remember what time he'd be at her table. "You stood out here all night? But I served you, like, three hours ago -"
" - I really am sorry. You're amazing, and I...I just...I wanted the chance to tell you that.
She looked at him. He did look sorry, and seemed pretty harmless.
"How were you gonna make it up to me?" she asked. She was curious what his intentions were; if he was apologizing because he wanted to, or if he hoped to get something out of it.
Sero looked at her, his eyes brightened. "I was gonna ask if you've had dinner."
" I have, actually."
"Oh. Um...how 'bout drinks then?"
"I'm tired. You know, from using my brain all day," she teased, putting her hands in her pockets.
She has jokes, he thought to himself as a smile formed on his face. " Do you get days off?"
Yumi tried hard not to smile. He was a persistent one, but in a cute way. "Sometimes."
"Maybe on one of your days off, I could -"
"- Thursday. Seven o-clock. The Cheesecake factory. You're gonna tip our server very well too, so brush up on your math skills." With a slight smile, she walked away.
Sero smiled at how things transpired until he remembered something.
"Wait! " he said, causing her to turn around. "I didn't get your name - "
" - Yumi. Yumi Mizuno."
He smiled. "Hanta Sero."
She smiled. "See you on Thursday, Hanta."
