"The 100" - Talking
Chapter 1- Pilot
Luke Hunter was only seventeen years old and was living on The Ark the largest undertaking humanity ever created. 12 stations housing what's left of the human race after they destroyed the earth in nuclear fire ninety-seven years ago. He was the son of Guard Commander James Hunter while his mother died during childbirth which devastated James. Something Luke shared with his mother was his love of reading so James would find him books to read while growing up.
He wasn't an antisocial person by any means he just wasn't all that keen on making friends. but he did have one friend. Wells Jaha the son of Ark Chancellor Thelonious Jaha. Wells met Luke one day and the two have been good friends but Luke didn't get too close to Wells other friend Clarke Griffin but they were acquainted with one another.
Luke was a decently tall person standing at six feet tall, he has slick black hair and emerald green eyes. His hair was slicked back naturally he didn't know how, he was wearing a plain white t-shirt, blue jeans, black boots, and a black leather jacket-hoodie. He was a bookworm anytime someone saw him he was reading books.
Luke felt a presence and looked to see Wells walk up to him. "Hey."
"Hey Wells." Luke put his book down after closing it.
Wells took a seat across from him taking the book from in front of Luke. "Plant Biology." Wells looked at Luke. "You really are a bookworm." Wells smiled as Luke chuckled to himself.
"It passes the time." Luke took the book back from Wells. "Besides when the day comes that I go down to Earth I want to be prepared just in case. Who knows maybe I'll be the first to die from eating a poisonous berry." Luke joked with a coy smile making Wells laugh a bit.
"Then who would I play chess with huh? Clarke would be too busy helping her mother try and save your life to do that." Wells joked as Luke looked down a bit but Wells saw it. "Luke I gotta ask what's up with you?"
"Hmm?" Luke looked at Wells fainting confusion. "What are you talking about?"
Wells glared at Luke. "Everytime I mention Clarke or when she walks up you act all weird and you run off. Come on man tell me what's up?"
Luke sighed as he ran his hand through his hair. "I'm not a people person Wells. I don't hate Clarke but I just get nervous around people. Only reason why I talk to you is because you said 'Hi' first."
Wells looked up and saw Clarke. "Hey Clarke!"
Wells waved her over to them as Luke glared at Wells and in a whisper said. "You really must hate me don't you."
Clarke walked over so Luke moved over giving her room to sit down. "Hi Wells..Luke." Clarke sat down next to Luke and she had a look on her face that showed concern.
Wells noticed it immediately. "What's wrong Clarke? Something bothering you?"
"Nothing just.." Clarke looked at Luke who got the hint and stood up.
Wells stopped him by grabbing his wrist. "Luke's cool. He can keep a secret, you can trust him."
Clarke sighed. "Okay." Clarke nodded at Luke who sat back down next to her as she whispered. "But this can not leave this table." She looked at Wells and Luke who both nodded in understanding. "I overheard a conversation between my parents. The Ark's life support systems are failing and my dad said that it's a complete systems failure." Wells and Luke looked at Clarke with a look of shock.
Wells looked at Clarke. "Wait Clarke can't your dad fix it?"
"No." Luke caught both Clarke and Wells' attention. "I've helped in engineering and Clarke's dad is the best on the station and if he says it can't be fixed it means he's tried everything to do it." Luke ran a hand through his hair. "Does anyone else know?"
"No." Clarke shook her head. "My mom said anyone who tries to break the news gets floated as punishment." Clarke looked at Luke who was looking down as it must have come as a shock. "You aren't going to tell anyone are you?"
Luke shook his head. "No I swear I won't but I got classes to go to. Later Wells. Clarke." Luke walked off into an uncertain future.
***Nine Months Later***
Luke sat in a small prison holding cell reading a book, one of several that his father James Hunter had given him when Luke was incarcerated. The only reason Luke had any books at all was because his father sat on the Ark Council and was trying to make things easier on his son. Luke had one of two activities while he was incarcerated. Read and Exercise. The exercising was easy because he could do elevated push ups or sit ups while in his cell. Luke continuously asked his dad why he wasn't trying to get him out of the skybox.
Luke looked up from his book when his father walked in accompanied by a guard. "Hello Luke. I brought you something." Luke looked as his father handed him another book which Luke took and read the title Advanced Bushcraft: An Expert Field Guide To The Art Of Wilderness Survival.
Luke looked up at his dad with an inquisitive look. "What's this for?"
James looked at his son with a smile. "I thought you'd like to see what it was like for our ancestors on earth and I remember you specifically wanted to be ready for the day we went back down to the surface. You'd be our resident survivalist expert."
Luke just looked at his father coldly. "Then why am I locked up here? I know for a fact my revision doesn't happen for another five months."
James looked at his son then back at the guards before he returned his gaze to his son and whispered. "Listen to me Luke I am trying everything I can to have you pardoned but I need more time."
Luke scoffed. "You've had nine months."
"I know that. But please be patient." James stood up and walked back outside the door looking at the guard. "I'm done here."
Luke watched as his father left him as the door was closed once more before looking at the book his dad handed him. "At least it's something new..Hope I never have to use anything from it.." Luke was silent as he opened the book and began reading.
***Two Months Later***
Luke had finished the book his father gave him two months earlier closing it and putting it next to the stack of books he had.
The door opened as a pair of guards walked in. "Get up Prisoner 401, face the wall." Luke stood up and turned around his back facing the guards. "Hold out your right hand."
Luke was confused by that. "What? Why? My revision isn't for another two months."
"I said hold out your right hand." One of the guards grabbed Luke's wrist only to get a knee to the stomach as Luke threw him into the second guard knocking them into the wall.
Luke ran out of his cell seeing others being taken out of their cells and when another guard tried grabbing him Luke headbutted him pushing him back.
"Luke!" The teen turned to see his father running towards him, stopping the guards. "Stand down!"
Luke looked at his father in confusion. "Dad what the hell is going on? Here why are they doing this? My revision isn't for two months. I'm not eighteen yet."
"Luke listen to me. You're not getting floated. You're going to earth." James looked to see the shocked expression on his son's face. "You and One Hundred are going down to the surface. You're going home."
Luke let out a gasp of shock. "You can't be serious. Why? Why send us down there?"
"To live." James watched as the guards grabbed Luke restraining him after putting the metal bracelet on his right wrist and began to drag him away.
Luke struggled against the guards grasp as he looked at his father. "You're killing us! You're killing us you hear me! YOU'RE KILLING US!"
Luke's screams faded as James watched his son being dragged away. "No..I'm saving you."
***Drop Ship***
Luke was strapped into a seat on the drop ship and when he was he looked to see Wells and Clarke. "Wells? Clarke?"
The two looked over seeing Luke and were surprised to see him as Clarke shook her head. "Luke? What the hell are you doing here?"
Luke sighed looking as the rest of the One Hundred were strapped in before looking at Clarke. "Guess my old man couldn't convince the council to let me go. Then again I did get into the forbidden sections of the Ark to see if what you said was true Clarke."
Wells looked at Luke. "That's what got you locked up?"
"Yeah. Surprised to see you here Wells but if I'm gonna die I'm glad to have a friend with me when I do." Luke looked at Clarke who looked away from his gaze so he looked down, closing his eyes, silently praying to God if he's even listening anymore.
The drop ship suddenly began to shake as a high-pitched shrill sound came from the ship as everyone started to panic a little bit. The turmoil was caused by the atmosphere of the planet below them as the lights flickered uncontrollably.
That's when the monitors in the drop ship came to life and Chancellor Jaha's face appeared as he stared directly into the camera. "Prisoners of the Ark hear me now. You've been given a second chance. And as your Chancellor, it is my hope that you see this as not just a chance for you, but a chance for all of us, indeed for mankind itself. We have no idea what is waiting for you down there. If the odds of survival were better, we would've sent others. Frankly, we're sending you because your crimes have made you expendable. Those crimes will be forgiven, records wiped clean. The drop site has been chosen carefully. Before the last war, Mount Weather was a military base built within a mountain." The screens displayed its first sign of disconnection blurring out for just a moment. "It was to be stocked with enough non-perishables to sustain 300 people for up to two years."
While Jaha's speech was played there was a sudden wave of encouraging shouts to someone on the ship.
"The Spacewalker Bandit strikes again!"
Luke looked to see what the hell was going on and turns out someone decided to unbuckle themselves from their harness to float in the air so he decided to say something. "Hey! Spacewalker! I suggest staying put unless you want to risk getting hurt when we land!"
"What's wrong bookworm? Afraid of a little adventure?" The Spacewalker a.k.a Finn floated by him.
Luke grew annoyed. "No, I just don't have tolerance for dumbasses who can't sit still when we're potentially going down to an irradiated planet to die."
"Mount Weather is life," Jaha's voice broke through after Luke expressed the need for Finn to strap back in or risk hurting himself. "You must locate those supplies immediately. Your one responsibility is to stay alive."
The drop ship began to violently shake again meaning they passed through the atmosphere and were getting pure turbulence. Two more decided to unbuckle themselves and float around just as the ship was getting a large amount of turbulence. But when the ship suddenly stopped all three floaters crashed into each other as the ship made its descent.
The panic of dying before hitting the ground entered the One Hundreds minds as they could potentially crash because the rockets haven't fired up yet and if they don't soon they'll all die.
But then it was over the ship landed and the lights started to flicker while the machines died as the One Hundred slowly came to realize that.
"Listen." Monty looked around. "No machine hum."
Luke soon realized it, whispering to himself. "We're on the ground..We're actually on the ground."
Jasper looked around the drop ship in wonder. "Woah..that's a first."
Soon everyone started to unbuckle themselves as Luke did the same only not as quickly because there is the distinct possibility that the radiation will kill them if the landing didn't.
"Luke." Wells walked over to Luke who stood up. "You okay?"
Luke looked at Wells. "Wells if we die of radiation at least I kept my promise to see the ground."
Wells looked at Luke. "What do you mean?"
"I made a promise to see the ground one day. Even if it won't last long at least I get to do something my mother dreamed of." Luke grasped a pendant that was around his neck as it once belonged to his mother.
"Luke?" The boy looked over to see Clarke walking up to him who returned her gaze as Clarke suddenly hugged him which surprised him. "I'm glad to see you're okay."
Luke slightly returned the hug unsure of how to respond to it but Clarke pulled back as he nodded at her. "I tried to warn people, Clarke. I swear I did. I should've tried harder but. They found me before I could do anything."
Clarke placed her hand on his shoulder. "I know you did what you could."
They heard a sudden shout. "The outer door is on the lower level! Let's go!"
Clarke watched as the prisoners all flooded to the lower level as she tried to protest. "No we can't just open the doors!" Clarke raced down the ladder as Luke and Wells followed suit as she called to the prisoner standing at the front who was wearing a guards uniform. "The air could be toxic."
"If the air is toxic, we're all dead anyway." The prisoner had a pessimistic tone in his voice.
"Bellamy?" The prisoner turned when his name was called.
The sea of prisoners all parted as a girl walked up to him with a look of shock and relief on her face. She had long brown hair with a smooth complexion.
Luke looked at the girl and felt like he knew her from somewhere but it wasn't coming to him until someone yelled it out. "That's Octavia Blake! The girl they found hidden under the floor!"
Luke mentally kicked himself for not remembering because he's heard stories about her but didn't know if they were true. He was brought out of his thoughts as the drop ship's door opened and a blinding flash of light filled the drop ship.
Octavia slowly walked out of the drop ship as the wind blew against her face and with a smile she jumped down onto the ground looking up to the sun. "We're back bitches!"
The prisoners all cheered filing out of the drop ship revealing in the fact they were on the ground as Luke looked around. "We made it mom." Luke smiled. "Welcome to earth."
The hype finally died down and Luke found Clarke by drop ship door hovering and marking the map so Luke walked over to her. "What's the plan?"
"I'm trying to figure out how to get to Mount Weather." She looked over at Luke. "I say we listen to Jaha and find supplies if we're gonna survive."
Luke looked to see Wells walking up to them. "We've got problems. The communication system is dead. I went to the roof, tons of panels were missing and heat fried the wires."
"Well all that matters is getting to Mount Weather." Clarke urged as she looked back down to the map. "This is us. This is where we need to get to if we want to survive."
"Where'd you learn to do that?" Wells looked at Clarke who just stared at him as he realized what he asked. "Your father."
Luke felt the tension rising so he decided to change the subject to help Wells out. "Well if we want to get to Mount Weather we should head out soon before it gets dark."
"Ah..cool. A map." Clarke, Wells and Luke turned to see Jesper walking up to them. "If they've got a bar in this town I'll buy you a beer."
"You mind?" Wells was pushing Jasper back slightly.
Luke stopped him. "Wells it's alright. Jaspers, cool."
"Hey! Hey! Hey!" Murphy walked up to the three with a small group of boys behind him. "Hands off. He's with us."
"Relax." Wells put his hands up defensively. "We're just trying to figure out where we are."
"We're on the ground." Wells turned to look at Bellamy who was by his sister. "That not good enough for you?"
Wells hesitated for a second. "We need to find Mount Weather. You heard my father's message that has to be our first priority."
"Screw your father." Octavia blurted out. "What? You think you're in charge here? You, your little princess..and your bookworm?"
Clarke walked by Wells. "You think we care who's in charge? We need to get to Mount Weather not because the Chancellor said so but, because the longer we wait. The hungrier we'll get and the harder this will be. How long do you think we'll last without those supplies?" Clarke looked around at the others. "We're looking at a twenty mile trek. Okay so if we want to get there before dark we need to leave now."
"I gotta better idea, how about you three go find it for us. Let the privileged do the hard work for a change." Bellamy said, earning a cheer from the masses.
Wells shook his head. "You're not listening. We all need to go."
Murphy came up behind Wells shoving him. "Look at this everybody. The Chancellor of earth."
Wells looked at Murphy. "You think that's funny?"
Murphy didn't respond but he kicked out Wells' ankle causing him to fall over as the boys backing him held Clarke back. "No. But that was."
Suddenly without warning or hesitation Luke tackled Murphy into the side of the drop ship before hitting him with three jabs across his jaw. Murphy tried to take Luke off his feet but Luke who has received training from his father kneed Murphy four times in the stomach.
Luke tossed Murphy onto the ground as Murphy slowly caught his breath looking up while Luke glared at him. "Stay away from my friend. If you don't I'll beat you within an inch of your life."
Murphy stood up as he glared back at Luke. "Oh really? Is the bookworm gonna hurt me?"
Luke just glared at him. "I'm warning you Murphy. I don't care what you think of Wells but if you try anything. It's gonna be worse than what you just got." Murphy glared at Luke who turned helping Wells to his feet. "You okay?"
Wells nodded. "Yeah. Thanks for the save."
Bellamy bellowed out a laugh. "Look at this. Looks like there's more to bookworm than we all thought. I guess being the Guard Commanders son has a few perks."
Luke shot his glare at Bellamy even though he hated his dad for sending him down here without knowing whether or not he'd survive he's still Luke's father. "Don't you talk about my dad."
"Or what? What are you gonna do huh?" Bellamy decided to show his authority over Luke by pulling out a pistol he had stashed on him, aiming it an inch away from Luke's face.
Clarke looked at Bellamy in horror, afraid Bellamy was actually going to shoot Luke. "Bellamy stop!"
Luke grabbed Beallamy's arm tossing him over his shoulder taking the gun from the teen aiming it Bellamy who was on the ground looking at Luke his hands up defensively and when Luke did all that it looked like it had been practiced.
Luke grabbed Bellamy's arm, hauling him to his feet before putting the gun in Bellamy's hand looking at him dead in the eyes. "Next time you pull that gun on me. You better be willing to shoot." Luke walked past Bellamy and away from the drop ship as everyone watched him.
Bellamy looked at Luke and seemed like he was really about to shoot Luke in the back but Finn jumped down off the dropship catching Bellamy's attention. "Hey. Come on. Chill out." Finn watched as Bellamy lowered the gun.
Clarke looked at Wells who seemed just as shocked as she was because in all the years he's known Luke he has never seen the usually calm and reserved bookworm do that.
When Luke was out of sight of the One Hundred he quickly grabbed his wrist tightly as his breathing grew heavy and jaded. He may not have shown it there at that moment but he was afraid that he was going to die. The memory of his father making him practice that exact same scenario played in his head as he tried to slow his breathing down.
Luke heard someone approaching him and he turned to see Clarke walking over to him. "Hey. You okay?"
Luke had slowed his breathing as he nodded. "Yeah. I'm alright." Luke walked past Clarke who walked beside him. "How's Wells's ankle?"
"Just a sprain he'll be fine." Clarke noticed Luke's shoulders relax a bit. "Finn, Monty, Jasper, Octavia and I are heading to Mount Weather. We could use your help."
Luke nodded. "I'm in. It's better to have numbers on your side especially since we don't know if anything is on the ground."
Clarke nodded her head but the shock of what just happened played out over and over in her head. She didn't know Luke as well unlike Wells who knew him a lot longer but even still he's said Luke is usually a calm person someone who never picks fights with people. But what just happened made her ask: Who really is Luke Hunter?
The small group headed towards Mount Weather walking into the forest with Luke being out in front with Jasper, Monty and Finn behind him while Octavia walked beside Clarke.
Octavia smiled as she walked with Clarke. "Before you get any ideas. Luke's mine."
Clarke rolled her eyes. "Before you get any idea's I don't care."
***Forest***
The group walked through the forest as Finn grabbed a nearby purple flower placing it over Octavia's ear making her smile.
Jasper whispered to his friend Monty. "Now that my friend is game."
Monty decided to point out the obvious. "That my friend, is poison sumac."
"What?" Octavia quickly knocked the flower out her hair. "It is?"
"The flowers aren't poisonous. They're medicinal, calming, actually." Monty stated as he ate one.
Jasper decided to elaborate. "His family grows all the pharmaceuticals on the Ark."
Luke turned back looking at them while Clarke stood beside him. "Hey guys come on keep up or you'll get left behind."
Finn scoffed. "Come on Luke. How do you and Clarke block all this out?"
Clarke looked at Finn. "Simple. I wonder, "Why haven't we seen any animals?" Maybe because they're are none. Maybe we've been exposed to enough radiation to kill us. Sure is pretty though. Come on." She and Luke walked away as the others followed.
Octavia mumbled under her breath. "Someone slip her a poison sumac." She got some laughs from Finn and Jasper.
Ignoring the group behind them Luke felt something in his jacket and pulled out a hunting knife which must've belonged to his ancestors from before the war because it had the last name on the hilt.
Clarke looked at Luke. "Where'd you get that from?"
Luke thought for a second. "My dad must've slipped it on me when I was being taken.." Luke snickered, shaking his head. "Clever old man.."
An awkward silence fell between them but Clarke decided to break it. "How did you do that before?"
Luke put the knife on his belt as he looked ahead avoiding Clarke's gaze. "Uh..my dad taught me..said if I wanna be a guard I gotta be ready for anything."
Luke stopped crouching as did Clarke who motioned the others to quietly walk over to them and when they did they saw a deer eating grass.
Finn smiled as he whispered. "No animals huh?" Finn slowly walked towards it until he stepped on a stick causing it to snap and when the deer looked over it had a second head.
Luke looked as it ran away. "That's something you don't see everyday." Luke looked at the other. "We should keep moving." He walked past Finn who soon followed.
***Later***
As the group kept walking Finn decided to ask the obvious question. "Why send us down here after 97 years? What changed?"
Octavia rolled her eyes. "Who cares? I'm just glad they did. I woke up rotting in a cell." She grabbed a tree spinning around it smiling. "Now I'm spinning in the forest."
Monty had an idea as to why. "Maybe they found something on a satellite. You know like an old weather satellite."
Luke looked at Clarke and nodded since they deserved to know. "It wasn't a satellite. The Ark is dying." That made all four stop looking at Clarke as she and Luke walked past them. "At the current population level, there's roughly three months left of life support, maybe four now that we're gone."
Finn looked at Clarke. "So that was the secret they locked you up to keep, kept you in solitary, floated your old man?"
Luke decided to let them know why he was locked up too. "She wasn't the only one. I found out too. They locked me up to keep me quiet too. My old man wasn't too keen on listening to me. Clarke's father wanted people to know the truth but the council didn't. Wells turned Clarke's father over and well..you know the rest. So keeping these wristbands on is important to let them know they can come down here which means we save everyone on the Ark."
Luke looked back as he stopped while Jasper smiled. "Oh I love earth." The others saw Octavia stripping down to her top and her underwear as she stood on the edge of a rock.
Clarke looked at her. "Octavia what the hell are you doing?" Octavia just looked back before jumping and there was a splashing sound as the group ran over seeing Octavia in the water. "Wait there's not supposed to be a river here."
Finn looked at Clarke. "Well there is. So take off your damn clothes." The Spacewalker smiled.
Jasper looked out down the river seeing something. Octavia get out of the water!"
She turned around seeing something coming and then she was gone. The group looked around in a panic before Octavia resurfaced as she screamed.
On pure instinct alone Luke pulled out the knife and ran off the edge jumping into the water before Clarke or the others could stop him. "Luke what are you doing!"
Luke splashed into the water as he swam towards Octavia who was brought under again just as he was and they were both gone from sight. The group started to panic calling out for them but then they saw a pool of blood floating up fearing the worst. That fear was squashed as Luke came up with Octavia as the two gasped for air.
The group ran down to the shore as Luke helped Octavia out of the water while she gasped for air meanwhile Luke tossed the bloody knife up onto shore climbing after it as he coughed.
Luke finally gasped for air as he looked at Octavia. "You okay?"
Octavia hugged him as she caught her breath. "Thank you. Thank you."
Clarke tore some of Jaspers shirt as she found a nasty bite on Octavia's thigh so she tied the torn piece above it, "You're gonna be okay."
Monty looked at Luke smiling. "Note to self. Save the girl."
The group laughed relieved that both were okay and whatever grabbed Octavia was hopefully dead if Luke's knife was any indication.
Luke sat up wiping the knife off on his sleeve before sheathing it back on his belt. "Whatever that thing was it's dead now."
Finn helped Luke stand up. "How'd you do that?"
Luke took a deep breath as he shrugged. "I was just acting on instincts I guess."
Jasper helped Octavia stand. "Well we're glad you did."
***That Evening***
Luke and the group had laid down that night to get some sleep but Clarke found herself waking up to birds chirping. She ast up and saw that the forest had an unusual yet beautiful glow to it so she stood up and walked through it but stopped as she saw Luke sitting by himself away from the others.
She walked over to him and slowly sat beside him. "Hey.."
Luke looked over at her before looking back at the sky. "Hey.."
Clarke looked up for a second before speaking. "That was real brave what you did today. You saved Octavia's life."
Luke nodded his head as he sighed. "As much as Bellamy pisses me off..she's his sister and no one deserves to suffer through that kinda loss."
Clarke took a moment to think to herself before she looked at Luke. "How did you do that earlier?" She saw Luke look at her confused by her question. "With Bellamy. Weren't you scared at all?"
Luke looked down as he felt his hand shake but he tried to calm himself down. "My dad. He said that if I want to be on the Ark's Guard then I have to be prepared for anything. So he had me practice. Over and over. He'd have an unloaded handgun pointed at me and he made me practice taking it from him."
Clarke seemed surprised and shocked really that someone's father would really do something like that to their own child. "Why would he do something like that? Why didn't your mother say anything?"
Luke slowly gripped the necklace, a pain in his chest coming to the surface. "My..My mom died when I was born." Before Clarke could apologize he kept going. "My dad cares, I know he does. He said my mom had always hoped to come down to earth. Feel the breeze on her face, the grass beneath her by being down here myself I feel like she's here with me." He showed the small jewel like pendant on his necklace. "This was hers. While I'm wearing it I feel like she's not really gone. She's just not here right now."
Clarke looked down to the ground feeling guilty about bringing his mother up. "I'm sorry I shouldn't have said anything."
Luke looked at her. "Hey." He bumped her leg, making her look at her. "It's alright." Luke stood up looking around. "Go on and get some sleep. We've got more walking to do." Clarke watched as Luke walked off but he stopped and looked at her. "I'm sorry about your dad. He was a good man and he made me believe that there is hope for all of us." Luke walked off to be alone.
Clarke watched him leave as she thought about what he said to her and she started to believe that maybe there is more to Luke than she originally thought.
***The Next Morning***
The group kept walking until they found a river and Mount Weather was on the other side so Finn had the idea to use some of the vines to swing across.
He was taking a bit too long so Clarke looked up at him. "You wanted to go first so quit stalling."
But before he could Jasper decided to go first and with a laugh he swung across the clearing and onto the other side standing up. "We are Apogee!"
The group cheered as Luke smiled maybe they'll survive after all until he saw a spear fly through the air and hit Jasper in the chest. "Jasper!"
