Initially I was not going to write this, I hate author notes, we, all of us here on , in this fandom, are here because we fucking love ASOIAF, even though GRRM wrote excellent novels and supplementary material to pad out the world of ASOIAF, for us that is not enough, we want more, since we are not getting more we will damn well write it ourselves. Essentially we are here for the story, not to read about feelings or life story of the pansy ass author, even if that pansy ass author is me, so I hate author notes.
But with the overwhelmingly negative reviews I got regarding the pairing of Ned/Cat instead of Ned/Ash, I struggled with myself a lot before writing this note. This is the meta reason for why I settled with Ned/Cat, in the beginning this was Ned/Ash story, I imagined their love story, their future children, appearance and personality of those children, future partners of those children, roles they will play in the greater scheme. First I kept them near to original starklings, same names and similar personalities, that did not work for me, seemed deeply disingenuous, so I changed names, ages, personalities. There were pages of notes, the more I filled out those characters less invested in them I became, finally I discarded all my notes on them. Then I discovered another hatred of mine. I loath OCs, I am outright repulsed by them. I love my canon characters, my one true OC Berek doesn't even last all of ten chapters in this AU before being sidelined, my other OCs of any significance, Shadows are quite literal faceless and nameless. I could tweak Canon characters, I could even twist them all the way around if I can linearly follow the logic of their actions and circumstances. But I am not creative enough to make an OC interesting to myself, further more I don't really want to. I am not much of a fan of Catelyn but she gets a pass because I am definitely a fan of Starklings. This story is mostly for me, but in the course of writing this I came to value my readers, so this story is a bit for you too, not a big bit, mind you, only a little bit, but I am willing to concede that bit.
Cheers.
P.S. I am fucking sorry for writing an Author Note and wasting your time. Thank You for your time.
