Upper East Side, Manhattan

"Hey mom!" Percy called out as he walked in. "Annabeth says hi. She says she'll be here in a few hours, just some work stuff she's doing. Anyway, I need your help packing…" he trailed off as he took a good look at the scene in front of him.

His mom and Paul were both sitting on the couch, backs straight. Sitting in the armchair across from them was a middle aged man in a long trench coat, dressed all in black. He was watching Percy carefully with his one eye, the right one having an eyepatch over it.

"Mr. Jackson," he greeted. "Pleasure to make your acquaintance."

"Yeah…um, same I guess," Percy replied, unsure. "Sorry, who are you and why are you here?"

"Nick Fury, Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.," the man replied. "Why don't you have a seat? There are some things I'd like to discuss with you."

Percy slowly walked towards a chair and slumped in it, his hand carefully resting on his ballpoint pen, ready to uncap it at a moment's notice. He didn't like the way his mom and Paul were acting around this man, their nervous expressions. And he didn't like the way this man was looking at him, as if sizing him up for a fight. And he didn't like the name Fury. He kept expecting the man to transform into a murderous hag with a flaming whip at any second.

"Mr. and Mrs. Blofis, perhaps you could give us the room," Fury said, phrasing it as a question but his tone stating otherwise.

Percy's mom must have sensed it as well and she and Paul stood up. "We'll just be in the other room. I want to check in on Estelle anyway." She gave Percy a reassuring nod and then they were both gone.

"Ok Mr. Fury," Percy started. "What's all this about?"

"Just Fury. And what this is all about is you, Mr. Jackson." Fury stared at Percy unwaveringly. "S.H.I.E.L.D. stands for the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division."

Percy's eyebrows went up. "You really wanted the initials to spell out SHIELD didn't you?"

"I didn't come up with the name. But most likely." Fury leaned forward slightly. "And do you know what S.H.I.E.L.D. does?"

"No, but I'm gonna guess you're going to tell me," Percy replied. After years of hanging out with Annabeth, he could tell.

Fury looked like he wanted to smirk. "S.H.I.E.L.D. was founded on the principle of protection. Sometimes, to protect a single person. Others, to protect the human race. It's a broad job description."

"Ok, but what does that have to do with me?" Percy asked. He was starting to get the sense of where this was going. He just wasn't sure if he liked it or not.

"One of the things S.H.I.E.L.D. does is keep an eye on…interesting individuals." This statement made Percy's hackles rise. "And we believe you fall into that category."

"Oh?" Percy said, trying to keep it cool, now actively fingering Riptide. "And why is that?"

Fury gave him a look before reaching inside his coat. Percy made a motion but Fury merely brought out a file and started rifling through it. "Let's see here…diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD as a child, kicked out of six schools in six years, and an altogether terrible record that marks you as a delinquent. It even says here that you fired a cannonball at a school bus on a field trip."

"That was an accident!"

"That is," Fury continued, ignoring Percy, "until three years ago when you started attending Goode High School where your record gained some improvement, despite your absence in the second term of your second year there." He eyed Percy for a moment but then went on. "Recently graduated and yet no college applications have been sent out, no job interviews. One can only wonder what your future holds."

At this point, Percy was pretty much convinced this guy was some sort of monster or god or something. But his mom had seen him, and she could see through the Mist. She had said she couldn't see through as well now, but still… He wished Rachel were here. Or Annabeth. Or Grover. Really anyone to help him out.

"But let's not dwell on all that, let's get to the good stuff, shall we?" Without waiting for Percy's reply, Fury started reading again. "Around five years ago, at the age of 12, you and your mother mysteriously vanished one June night with your car looking like it had exploded. Your stepfather, Gabe Ugliano, testified about your wild and dangerous behaviour. Then, you appear several times over the coming weeks, one on a road skirting New Jersey where a bus was blasted with lightning. Eyewitnesses claim to have seen three demonic old women attacking two young children. One snapped a picture of you some moments later." He held it up but Percy already knew what it was. He recognized it, even if it did feel like a million years ago. Him, running out of that bus, Riptide in his hand although in the image it was blurry so you couldn't make out what it was. He was convinced now that this guy wasn't an actual Fury and his name was just an unhappy coincidence since if the man was a Fury, he'd have known exactly what had happened on that bus.

"You appear again atop the St. Louis Arch which was damaged by another explosion, leaving a large hole in the side of the monument. Eyewitnesses claimed that it was some sort of fire-breathing Chihuahua that did it, going after some boy. These were tossed aside…for the most part." Fury gave Percy another look. Percy was getting more and more nervous. He had thought he had left all of this behind, that the Mist had covered all of this up. Evidently not.

"Here you are again, outside a diner in Denver with two other kids and one man who it looks like is arguing with you." Fury held up the photo as well and Percy recognized Ares's biker outfit, the very sight filling him with rage. He wanted to uncap Riptide and just finish this right now, but he couldn't. He still didn't know if Fury was mortal or not. And if he was, Percy just going and attacking him would not be good.

"And then, you appear on a beach in Los Angeles, just after a major earthquake, battling this same man with a rifle to shotgun, destroying five police cars in the process. And then, the story comes to light, that you had been abducted by this man and all these incidents were you and your companions merely trying to escape from him. You arrive home in New York to your mother safe and sound, all nicely wrapped up in a bow." Fury offered a small smile at that.

Percy went for a nonchalant shrug. "That's what happened man, what can I say."

Fury's gaze was piercing, even with one eye, and Percy was almost reminded of Annabeth. He could tell that this man wasn't believing a word of this story.

"After this little odyssey of terror, your life returns to normalcy and you attend Meriwether Prep for your seventh grade with zero incidents. That is…until your last day of school in your Physical Education class where several explosions occurred and the faculty discovered craters in the floor, holes in the wall, and small fires spreading everywhere." Percy shuddered at the memory, at the Laistrygonians. Yeah, he really didn't like where this was going. "A student by the name of Matt Sloan placed the blame solely on you and you took off accompanied by another student by the name of Tyson, who…" he combed through the files again, "does not appear to have a last name. Anyway, you were the object of another manhunt and yet, while Mr. Sloan's testimony was the most convincing, there were other student testimonies that told a different story."

Percy perked up now. "Corey Bailer and Raj Mandeli both stated that it wasn't you who caused the explosions but some mad cannibals who wanted to eat them for lunch after a game of dodgeball and it was you and Tyson who saved them all. Naturally, these statements were blamed on trauma and smoke inhalation. Yet, around two weeks later, the truth comes out again and the whole matter is dropped. Almost like…magic."

Percy was getting really sick of the looks Fury was giving him, the knowing ones. "Look, can we speed this up? I kind of want to know what this is all about."

Fury nodded. "One year after that, at the orientation for Goode High School, you were involved in another incident in where it appeared you killed the student Kelli, last name also redacted, and set fire to the school. And yet, Rachel Elizabeth Dare claimed your innocence and it was eventually revealed that Kelli was the one behind it all and you were let off the hook. My, my, we certainly have a pattern here, don't we?"

Percy opened his mouth again but Fury held his hand up. "Ah, ah, we're getting there. This is the final bit. Two years ago, the island of Manhattan was involved in an…interesting incident where for several days, all citizens suffered memory loss and awoke to find much of the city in shambles, most of all the statues." Percy gulped. "You see, Mr. Jackson, it's this particular incident that S.H.I.E.L.D. kept track of. Because despite massive cover ups and memory blanks, the explanation for why every citizen in Manhattan suffered memory loss, why every camera in the city went blank during that same time, and why the city looked like it had been in the middle of a war zone remains unknown. And that is something, as the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., I do not like."

Percy took a deep breath and blew it out slowly. "Well, I can't really help you there since I wasn't involved in…whatever happened there."

Fury took out another photo and handed it to Percy and he gulped again as he saw himself, Annabeth, Grover, and Nico leaving the Empire State Building.

"Cameras started working again the morning of the eighteenth of August," Fury explained. "They caught you right in what we believed was the epicentre of the whole incident. You mysteriously vanish after that and then maintain a pretty normal lifestyle with no other major incidents being recorded."

Percy wouldn't say that. After all, the war with Gaea happened almost right after that. But that one hadn't been in the public eye so much, no. "Ok, well if all this happened two years ago, why are you bringing it up now?" he asked.

Fury nodded. "Well, you see Mr. Jackson, even with all the resources S.H.I.E.L.D. has at its disposal, it took several years for it to compile this much do to a large amount of lack of interest, memory loss, and procrastination. Files went missing, electronics glitched. Almost as if something didn't want us to make this file." He peered at Percy even more intently than before.

Percy opened his mouth but then discovered that he had absolutely no idea what to say and so he just closed it again. Gods, he wished Annabeth was here. She could help him out. She'd know what to do. She probably already had a plan.

"Let's just cut to the chase then," Fury suggested. "Mr. Jackson, on first glance at all of this, my impression was that you attract trouble. I don't believe in coincidences. You've had incidents for many years and there are probably more that we aren't even aware of." Percy tried desperately hard to keep a straight face when Fury said that. "Now, this could mean one of two things. That you yourself are the trouble, constantly causing these incidents for the fun of it and then getting off scot-free." His eye was now practically piercing into Percy's soul, as if trying to mentally dig up his secrets. "But that is not what I believe. I thoroughly read through your file, Mr. Jackson. And when you look at all of it, and I mean all of it, it tells a different story. A story of a young man who seems to be involved in some dangerous things, things that constantly bother him, causing much damage in the process. And you, it seems, are only ever trying to help. Reports of you being in fights defending your friends. The incidents showing you protecting people. And there is of course the matter where it looked like the isle of Manhattan had been secretly invaded but had somehow been saved. And if I were a betting man, my money would be that it was because of you. Am I right?"

"Um…" Percy stuttered. He had thought this conversation was going one way but now it had switched directions and was going in a completely different direction and he was left floundering in its wake. "Uh…"

"Yes, I thought as much." Fury nodded slowly, as if coming to a decision. "You turned 18 recently, Mr. Jackson, marking you as a legal adult. I don't know exactly who you are but based on my hunch, I believe you are someone who does his best to protect the people around him, no matter what. And that is exactly what I'm looking for."

"Uh, I'm sorry?"

"Mr. Jackson, a while back I thought the world was one thing. Then something happened, and my perspective was completely flipped upside down and I realized that the world was much bigger than I realized."

Percy's eyes widened. Was it possible? Did Fury know? Or was he talking about something else entirely?

"Judging from your expression, I'm guessing you have some idea of what I'm talking about," Fury said. "Mr. Jackson, I take my job very seriously. And I realized a while ago that there are some things that not even S.H.I.E.L.D. is equipped to handle. Sometimes, we need something more. And I believe you can help with that."

"Um…Mr. Fury, uh, sir," Percy stumbled over his words. "Sorry, what is it exactly that you're saying?"

"What I'm saying is that I want you take a look at this." Fury reached into his coat again and took out another file, handing it to Percy. It said AVENGERS INITIATIVE on it, in nice bold letters that helped with his dyslexia.

"Huh." Percy took the file and quickly read through it. He really only skimmed it, and with his dyslexia he couldn't make out a lot anyway. But he got the gist. "So basically you want to form a team of…super-people to help save the world."

"Basically…yes," Fury replied.

"Ok," Percy nodded. "And you want me to be a part of it?"

"We believe you could be," Fury corrected. "We'll need to evaluate you to be sure."

"And what does that mean?" Percy asked, getting suspicious again.

Fury sighed. "That isn't important right now. What is, is this. Are you interested or not?"

Percy stared at him and then stared out the window. He didn't know. Really, all he wanted to do was kick back, go to college, and celebrate his life with his wonderful girlfriend without having to worry about always saving the world. Hadn't he earned that? Hadn't he saved the world enough times already?

But, if the world really was in danger, he wasn't one to let someone else handle it. That wasn't him. It was part of his fatal flaw. He just couldn't leave others to go down fighting when he could do something about it. If being a part of this Avengers Initiative helped him keep his loved ones safe, then…maybe it was worth it. With this S.H.I.E.L.D. on their side, more lives could be saved. He still felt pangs when he thought about Jason. No matter how many times he told himself, he couldn't shake off the guilt of not doing more. Maybe if he had, he would still be alive.

Maybe…maybe this could help.

"Alright," he said. "Let's say I'm interested. But this won't mean that I have to start working at S.H.I.E.L.D. right? Cause I still plan on going to college and-"

"No, Mr. Jackson, that'll be fine," Fury nodded. "You're still pretty young and as of right now, this initiative is not yet needed." He hesitated a little there, just enough that Percy caught it, but he recovered quickly. "I'll keep in touch. Or at least, one of my agents will. Keep this on you." He handed Percy a phone.

Percy took it gingerly. "Uh…yeah, me and phones don't really mix well. If I use it, it sort of…causes trouble."

Fury looked at him, eye narrowed. "Keep it anyway. It's a burner phone and can only receive calls and texts. We'll do our best to make each use brief." He stood up then. "Well, Mr. Jackson, it has been a pleasure and I look forward to our next interaction."

"Uh, yeah, same," Percy nodded, shaking Fury's hand. It was strange. When the man first entered, Percy considered him a dangerous threat. Now, he might be a very useful ally.

Just as Fury turned to leave, Percy stopped him with one last question. "Hey, how come you were looking at me in the first place? I mean, all that stuff is still pretty circumstantial. Why did you even start looking me up?"

Fury turned and raised an eyebrow. "We started when a passing drone saw a young man diving in the waters of Long Island Sound for hours on end with what seemed to be no need for air. The man even seemed to be controlling the water. But, then again, the footage was kind of fuzzy." It was hard to tell if he blinked or winked with the one eye and all, but Fury's small smile as well seemed to confirm it.

As soon as he left, Percy let out air he hadn't realized he'd been holding. He barely had time to take another breath when the bedroom door opened and his mom and Paul re-emerged.

"So what did he want?" his mom asked.

Percy opened his mouth and then closed it again, once more at a loss for words.

He didn't see Fury much after that. He told his mom and Annabeth what he'd said and while his mom was set against him joining this super team, Annabeth was a bit more amenable. While she didn't want him giving up New Rome for S.H.I.E.L.D., she did agree that having them as allies would be better in the long run. In the end, they decided to keep an open mind going forward and see what happened.

Percy only met with Fury once more in person, when he demonstrated his powers and had to be registered on some database. He was a little concerned about being in a government database, but he knew he had to give them something if they were to work together. Plus, if worst came to worst, he could always have Chiron manipulate the Mist or something and erase the whole thing. Probably.

Needless to say, he did impress all the S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel there by manipulating the water around him. He kept his powers vague and when asked how he'd received them just said he was born with them and probably got them from his father who he'd never met. Maybe he'd tell the truth one day. But definitely not yet. He was playing a dangerous game here. He was fine putting himself on the line, but if he said the wrong thing, he could expose the entire demigod population to S.H.I.E.L.D. and until he knew what he was dealing with, that was something he couldn't risk.

He met a few other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. Most were scientists who were too busy fawning over his powers and how they worked to introduce themselves properly. There was Maria Hill, a stern woman who stayed at Fury's side and reminded Percy a little of Hera. There was also this younger woman with bright red hair, a little like Rachel's, who watched him critically, as if waiting for him to screw up. He managed to get a small reaction out of her when he took down seven agents in hand-to-hand combat.

After that, he went to New Rome and started settling down into a new and improved normal. He kept an eye on S.H.I.E.L.D., waiting if they ever needed him. But in their last conversation, Fury had said there were rumblings about the future of the initiative and they'd let him know of any changes. That had left Percy wondering if this Avengers thing was even going forward. He didn't know if that was bad or good. But after months of silence, he stopped worrying and just began enjoying his life. He even managed to forget about it for a little while.

That was, until, May 2nd.

Hello all. After reading many different crossover stories between these worlds that I didn't really like, I decided to write my own. Hope you enjoy it. I'll try to post the first official chapter in the next week or so.
