Zelda stood by the non-lit fire pit in the woods. She crouched, inspecting it. Link had dropped her off on the Great Plateau, pointed towards the forest, and told her that was where she was camping tonight. As excited as Zelda had been, she had expected Link to at least be around. But Link had teleported away. Zelda sighed. This was alright. This was okay, right? She just had to do what Link does. Simple really.
Zelda looked up at the sky. She still had an hour or two of daylight left. She needed food, water, and maybe some kind of shelter. Food was one thing... Zelda looked around and inspected the trees. Apples. She smiled, appreciating the lessons Link had given her now. Food was check, but could she survive on apples? Maybe there was a bit more... Link had meat in the Sheikah Slate. Hunting, she could use the bow. Actually cooking it was another matter. As for fire...
Zelda stared back at the pot. What did Link used to do to start fires a hundred years ago? Zelda thought back to all the times Link and herself had camped out... Link had always had a piece of flint... and if he didn't he found some. Maybe if Zelda walked around she would come across some flint. Zelda got up with a smile. She could do this.
First things first: Apples. Zelda ran over to the trees and quickly climbed, reaching for multiple apples. She dropped them to the grassy ground, jumping down after them, and piling them against the cold pot.
"I wonder if my father put this here when he was a ghost..." Zelda wondered to herself, feeling grief building up. She shook her head. Now wasn't the time. She needed more apples. Zelda climbed almost every tree in the tiny wooded area. Soon a large pile of apples was next to her pot. Zelda clapped her hands together, cheering for herself.
"Alright then... flint... flint... Zelda walked around the forest, inspecting different types of grasses and flowers as she looked, claiming some of the wild flowers and insects for her own, claiming they would be 'useful' for later. Soon Zelda came upon a cliff, at it's base, a large black looking shiny rock.
"Ore! Flint should be in there!" She said to herself. However, one thing she had not accounted for stopped her. How was she supposed to break it open? Zelda searched around for anything she could use to break the ore open. What had Link always used... Zelda put a hand to her forehead. She had never payed much attention. She was either ignoring him or in her books. Suddenly an idea popped into Zelda's head. There was an axe next to the fire pot!
Zelda ran back through the forest towards the fire pot, grabbing the axe and heaving it over her shoulder. Zelda tried to take a step forward before the weight became too much, causing her to fall backwards on her back. Okay, that was heavy. Link jumped with this? Zelda frowned, bringing herself to her feet and grabbed the axe by the handle, dragging it towards the shiny blackened rock.
She made her way to the ore and observed it.
"Okay... If I spread my feet this way... How does Link do it? He kinda does this... and then swings... alright... and now!" She called as she swung the axe. The axe barely made a dent. Zelda sighed. She wasn't strong enough to do it this way. Zelda looked around. There had to be another way of doing this... Zelda then noticed something on top of the cliff. Boulders. Zelda smiled. That was perfect.
She climbed her way up the cliff and positioned herself next to the boulder looking down. She focused for a second before getting behind the boulder. With all her might, using a lot of her leg power, the boulder gave, rolling down the hill and crashing into the ore. Ores of bright rainbowish colors sprang from impact. Zelda smiled brightly as she climbed back down the mountain.
"These could be valuable... Amber... Amber... Flint!" She cheered, grabbing the greyish rock from the ground. She grabbed the end handle of the axe and dragged it back to fire pot. At the pot Zelda placed the flint under the pot and with all her strength, she swung, lighting the fire. Zelda now had warmth and a means to cook. Zelda looked up at the sun, it was sunset now. Maybe she could get a bit of meat to go with her apples.
Zelda grabbed the bow Link had given her and walked through the forest. After a few minutes of walking, out of the corner of her eye, Zelda noticed a boar silently eating to itself. Zelda raised and pulled back her bow, taking a step to try and get a better view. Unfortunately, the boars ears perked up and sprinted, causing Zelda to miss her arrow.
"No wait!" She called running after the boar, suddenly the boar turned to face her, now charging with intense fear in its eyes. Zelda stopped her pursuit, skidding to a halt, dust kicking up from her sudden decrease in movement.
"Wait, wait, wait, NO!" She screamed as the boar charged its way threw her. Zelda was thrown into the air, slamming to the ground. Zelda tried to push herself up, trying to avoid another boar charging at her before slipping in the grass. Zelda rolled down the hill she was stationed on right into a bush next to a tree. Zelda slowly emerged from the bush, covered in leaves and twigs.
"Okay... So moving targets are a bit harder to shoot... Good to know... They also charge at you... Also good to note... I think apples will be enough for tonight." She said to herself, limping away from the boars, who were now grazing on grass once again.
The sky was turning a dark bluish color now as Zelda sat by the old log with the fire pit lit, giving off a warm orange light. Zelda took a deep breath as the sky grew dark. Her stomach growled. She looked at the pile of Apples she had collected, along with some of the gems and rocks she had stored next to them from her boulder mining. She could make something with this... Right?
Zelda crawled over to the apples and salt, picked them up and walked towards the cooking pot. She took a deep breath and prayed to herself.
"Please work..." She said as she threw the ingredients into the pot and started stirring. After a few burns and a bit of smoke rising, Zelda put the baked(?) apples on the plate and stared. That didn't look like the usually salted baked apples Link usually made... Well looks aren't everything.
Zelda closed her eyes and took a bite of a piece of apple. It was dry and extremely salty. Zelda spit the apple back out. This was no good. Zelda brought her knees to her chest. This wasn't as exciting as she thought it would be... She didn't know what she was doing. Not to mention she was alone this time.
Being out in the wilderness... In the dark... To find her own food... With only herself to talk to...
Is this how Link felt all those months? At least with fending of Calamity Ganon she felt almost sleep. This was way worse. Zelda couldn't imagine travelling, no memories, on her own to save a princess who she also couldn't remember, carrying the weight and deaths of all her fallen comrades slowly remembering the pain and those she lost over time...
She couldn't do this. Not alone. She needed Link here. Link with her. She thought back to the time they had spent in the house together. It hadn't been very long they had been liking together, a few weeks at most. And the training Link put her through could get tiring... But it was with him nonetheless. She felt more at home in that tiny house of his than in the castle she grew up in... Yet it still felt like he was keeping such a distance from her.
Zelda put her forehead to her knees. Why couldn't he drop that wall he had put between them?
Zelda's head shot up. A sound.
Zelda looked up at the sky. The moon was clearly overhead now, the moonlight shining clearly down onto the land. The woods, except for the rustling of trees, lay dormant. So why did Zelda hear the sound of shuffling? Zelda stood to her feet, grabbing her bow as she did. She looked around, the shuffling grew louder and louder. What was happening? Was the ground shaking slightly?
Suddenly, bones and arms reached from the ground, crawling to the surface. The yellow glowing eyes of the undead focusing on Zelda, running towards her clubs in their hands. Zelda, trying not to panic, drew her bow firing an arrow at one of the three undead Bokoblins headed her way.
The arrow shot right through the center of the Bokoblins skull, causing the enemies bones to cripple and deform, bones crashing to the ground. The other two had advanced faster than before. Zelda had started running too, trying to gain distance between herself and the enemies. She stopped a good distance away and fired another arrow, hitting a second Bokoblin skull, the same clattering of bones hitting the grass. One more.
Zelda reached for another arrow however when she grabbed she felt not an arrow, but air. Zelda looked down at her waist to see her arrows had all but run out. Suddenly she felt a rumble from behind her. The Bokoblin stopped its advances as the Moblin skeleton protruded from the ground, staring down at the little Zelda cowering in front of it. Zelda fell to her knees.
Link wasn't here to save her this time.
