Chapter 6: The Church of the Three Heroes
EMIYA had visited a lot of churches in the past. He had even stepped foot into some of the biggest and most famous religious places in the world, including places such as the Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran in Rome.
That's why he was impressed by this particular church he was standing in front of.
It wasn't as much a "white" building as he had thought when he'd looked at it from the marketplace. The building was incredibly big; it could even rival the royal palace itself in size. The one who designed this pompous building seemed to have an obsession with triangles: the roofs are formed by red stones aligned into big triangle shapes, and there were towers formed by white triangle stone walls at the four corners of the building. Even the windows were triangle-shaped. And the entrance was completed by a beautiful, gigantic double door made of some very good kind of wood which EMIYA found very similar to oak wood in his world. Looking at the building, EMIYA could feel an air of holiness surrounding it.
It's not like anything holy is a good thing, though. He shuddered when thinking back to a certain church he had visited in his life. Even though the owner of that place had been killed after the Fifth Holy Grail War ended, he still never wanted to step foot into that place another time.
Well, they were already here, so it makes no sense not to come in.
Stepping foot inside the building, the ex-Guardian was even more impressed. The main hall of the building was made completely from white marble, giving the chamber a bright and holy atmosphere, which indeed soothed the heart of people walking into the church, but for some reason, EMIYA felt that it was a little bit cold. The walls were decorated with lancet windows made of ornate stained glass of the highest quality, which let the sunlight pour into the chamber, making it even brighter. And at the center of the room stood a gigantic hourglass filled with red sand, decorated with huge rubies. The sand was slowly dropping down into the lowest bulb, and the Sword Hero noticed that it was already half-filled.
Seeing EMIYA and his team enter the building, a sister of the church, who was standing in front of the hourglass, walked up and bowed to him.
"Lord Sword Hero. Welcome to the Church of the Three Heroes. I guess you are here to register yourself to the Red Hourglass of the Dragon's Era?"
EMIYA blinked. "Red Hourglass of the Dragon's Era?"
The nun waved her hand at the gigantic hourglass behind her. "Yes, the Red Hourglass of the Dragon's Era is the tool left to us by God since the beginning of time. It shows us when the next Wave of Calamity will start, and also has a lot of functions that a Legendary Hero can utilize. The first thing a Legendary Hero should do after being summoned is to register himself to the Hourglass."
'Since the beginning of time'. Yeah, right. EMIYA rolled his eyes. He wasn't surprised hearing those narcissistic words, though; it's actually pretty common for religious cults to declare themselves the apostles of Gods. And in the end, those cults turned out to be tools of political groups to expand their influence on the world by manipulating their followers.
"So how can I register?"
The nun nodded at the Legendary Sword on his back. "Do you see the gem on your sword? Just take it out and point the gem at the Hourglass, please."
Hesitated, EMIYA unsheathed the Legendary Sword and held it in front of him, with the gem pointing outward. Immediately, a beam of light shot out from the jewel and lit up the ruby affixed to the center of the hourglass. A high-pitched BEEP echoed through the air, and a small clock appeared in the corner of his vision.
618:12:43
"Registration is completed. Do you see a clock appearing in your vision, Lord Sword Hero? It should be the remaining time for you until the next Wave begins. Please use that time carefully to prepare for the battle."
This number should be… 618 hours, 12 minutes, and 43 seconds. So they still had about 25 days to prepare for the next Wave. Not much, but he could still do something useful if he used that time efficiently.
Then he remembered something. "Did the other Heroes know about this? They would need time to prepare for the battle too, right?"
"The other Heroes were all informed about the time, Sir. You don't have to worry," the nun gave him the answer with a smile.
"Good," the ex-Guardian nodded. "Then I suppose there will be things like strategy meetings before the battle, won't it?"
Silence.
"I'm afraid I don't understand what you are talking about, Lord Sword Hero."
EMIYA felt a disturbing feeling climbing up his stomach.
"Hold on. Are you saying that we're supposed to go to a battle to protect the world without any tactic or strategy at all?!"
The nun just looked at him with a confused, innocent eye.
The ex-Guardian cursed in his breath. He had known that there wouldn't be much help from the kingdom itself during the Waves, but he hadn't expected that the kingdom itself could be so incompetent. They were expecting the Heroes to rush headfirst into a war without any strategy, any preparation, or any assistance from the kingdom's army at all. Just what kind of game are they playing here?
"Maybe I can help you understand that, Lord Sword Hero."
Everyone turned toward the direction of the new voice. The voice came from a middle-aged man wearing a cardinal robe and hat. He exuded an aura of holiness; if anything, his warm grandpa-like expression reminded EMIYA of Santa Claus.
"Oh, hey…" he began, but was immediately startled when everyone around him hastily dropped down to the ground as if they were puppets whose strings were abruptly cut.
"What the!?"
"Shirou-sensei!" Tersia gritted her teeth; it looked like she had just been scared shitless. "That is the Pope himself! Show some respect, please!"
"Hoho, don't worry, don't worry! Everyone, please stand up! Now then, we haven't met each other before, Lord Sword Hero. My name is Bisca T. Balamus, and I am the current Pope of the Church of the Three Heroes. Welcome to the Church."
He reached out a hand, and EMIYA grabbed it.
"Please to meet you, Your Grace," the ex-Guardian answered politely. Everyone else, even though they had stood up, still looked terrified seeing the Hero of the Sword acting so casually in front of the Holy Pope himself.
The Pope smiled pleasantly. "Now then, to answer your question, the reason why we don't hold strategic meetings is because there's no point doing that. The Hourglass of the Dragon's Era can show us when a Wave within its jurisdiction will start, but it cannot show exactly where that Wave would happen in advance. When the Wave starts, the Heroes and their parties will be teleported directly to the battlefield as the vanguard, and when they arrive there, the kingdom's army will know and go there to assist."
EMIYA narrowed his eyes. "So that means we would have to fight alone until the reinforcement arrives? What if the battlefield is somewhere hundreds of kilometers away from the capital? We might have been killed even before reinforcement could reach the place."
The smile of the Pope turned apologetic. "I'm really sorry, Lord Sword Hero, but that's what we do all the time here. We would have to depend on how lucky we are… and how powerful you Heroes would be when the time comes."
EMIYA gritted his teeth. Even though he didn't like it, he had to admit that what the Pope had said made sense. If they didn't know where exactly the battlefield would be, planning strategies in advance would be pointless. A plan for a battle on the plain can't be used if the battlefield actually happens on top of a mountain. They could prepare in some way if the battle happened on places like an archipelago, where a single type of terrain covers most of the area, but on the mainland where there are a lot of different types of terrain overlapping each other…
"Very well then," finally, he sighed. "But the sister over there said that the hourglass has a lot of other functions for the Heroes to use. Can you tell me what they are?"
"Ah, that's a good question," the Pope nodded. He walked toward an altar in front of the Hourglass. "When members of a Hero's party reach a certain level limit, they are not going to gain any more EXP to grow further. That is when you need to go to the Hourglass to perform a class-up ritual. That ritual will break the limit placed on your party, allowing them to grow even further. From what I know, the maximum level limit for a normal person is 100, while the Heroes themselves have no such limit. When they reach level 100, even the Hourglass won't be able to help them grow any further."
"Interesting," EMIYA noted. "So what is the level limit for the first class-up?"
"The first limit is level 40, but you can already perform a class-up at around level 35 if you really want to."
The ex-Guardian glanced at his companions. None of them, even himself, had even reached level 10. EMIYA himself had only grown to level 7 after fighting the giant boar the other day. It would still be some time before he could think of breaking the limit for his companions.
"The Hourglass also has another function," the Pope continued. "If the Hero requires, it can reset the level of a person back to 1. Although I don't think you would need to use this function; it is only to restrain the abilities of criminals so that they wouldn't be able to escape or fight back. And also, when you are here, there is something I want you to receive. Bring it out."
From behind the Hourglass, a nun walked out with a bag in her hand.
"This is the sand of the Hourglass of the Dragon's Era. Let your Legendary Weapon absorb it, and it will give you a good tool that will benefit your journey."
The ex-Guardian poured some of the content of the bag into his hand. It was the same kind of sand that he saw inside the Hourglass. Carefully, he let the Sword absorb the amount of sand on his hand.

Transport Sword?
He switched to the new sword, and saw a new skill appearing on his skill list.
Transport Sword (new): Allows the user and party members to teleport to a place they have visited and registered before.
EMIYA nearly screamed out in shock. Spatial Transportation is a magecraft bordering the realm of True Magic. Even most Servants don't have access to that kind of skill; only some of the most powerful Casters could achieve that level of magecraft without any outside assistance. Most need the power from a Command Spell to perform that miracle. And in this world, it is casually used as a skill which he could learn.
"Is there something wrong?" asked the Pope, seeing the ex-Guardian's expression. He shook his head.
"No, nothing…" Of course he wouldn't let them know what he was actually thinking; he's not that stupid. "This new weapon is indeed useful. Thank you very much, Your Grace."
Then he remembered the reason why he had wanted to come here. "Oh, now that you are here, is it OK if I ask you a question?"
The Pope smiled kindly. "You're welcome to ask, Lord Sword Hero. I will try to answer your question as much as I can."
"There are four Legendary Heroes in total, right? Then why is the name of your religion the Church of the Three Heroes?"
A frown appeared on the Pope's face. "Ah, right. You are not from this world, so I guess it's natural that you don't know. In the history of this land Melromarc, the Shield Hero is always considered a representative of our enemies. In the past, he was the one leading the army of the demi-human country Siltvelt to destroy our ancestors. Stories say that he has the ability to manipulate and control monsters to fight for him. That's why he is considered a bad omen, and he's not considered a proper Legendary Hero in the history of the Church. Some people even call the Shield Hero a demon lord."
EMIYA frowned. So it was about politics after all.
"But isn't that kinda unfair?" he pointed out. "From what I can see, Naofumi is just someone summoned from another world without knowing anything about this world at all. Even if the things you said about the Shield Hero in the past were true, isolating him for what his predecessors did was just not fair at all."
The Pope nodded solemnly. "I understand your reasoning, Lord Sword Hero, and I completely sympathize with that. Personally, I don't have anything against the current Shield Hero. But unfortunately, you can't convince the majority of our population with those words alone. Especially after what they said the Shield Hero did to the First Princess. I don't think a good person would even think of committing such a hideous crime."
EMIYA bit his lip. Poor Naofumi. If the discrimination is already at this point, there's no one who could help him but himself.
"Right," finally, he nodded. "I think that's enough for today. Thank you for your help, Your Grace."
The Pope smiled back at him warmly. "You're welcome, Lord Sword Hero. I hope the Church would be able to assist you more in the future."
The smile still stayed on his face until Team EMIYA's backs disappeared behind the giant entrance of the church. But right after the heavy doors slammed close, the warm feeling immediately disappeared, replaced by a dangerous and cold atmosphere coming from the twinkle in the Pope's eyes.
"Emiya Shirou… Hero of the Sword…"
"Eh? We're not going to the forest?"
Welt blinked in surprise when he realized that they were not on their way out of Castle Town. Rather, the Sword Hero was leading them… back to the royal castle.
"We have done quite a lot of things today, so I don't think we have enough time for level grinding now," the ex-Guardian explained. "Besides, it's not like we need any specific place. A real warrior can train themselves anytime, anywhere."
The team arrived at the training ground they did the test fight the other day. There was no one else there; the training time for the castle guards must have ended. EMIYA turned back to the three youngsters and said in a serious tone.
"Well then, now that we're here, I think we will have to make a proper training schedule. If you want to survive on a battlefield, unless you are gods or demigods with indestructible bodies, you cannot depend on brute strength alone. Because of that, for the first week starting from today, everyday, we are going to get up at five, and level grind until noon. In the afternoon, we are going to practice techniques and battle tactics. Did I make that clear?"
"Yes, sensei!" the three teenagers replied cheerfully. Then Tersia asked in excitement.
"So what kind of technique are you going to teach us today, sensei? Swordsmanship? Magic? Ooh, maybe a technique that let me fire beams from my sword?"
EMIYA smiled at the girl. "Ah, sure. Now, drop down and give me one hundred push-ups."
Silence.
"Eh?"
"WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?" The normal, warm voice of the red Hero suddenly turned into a roar. "DROP DOWN AND GIVE ME ONE HUNDRED PUSH-UPS, ALL OF YOU!"
"Well, that was… disappointing."
EMIYA frowned when looking at the three youngsters lying under his feet.
He had wanted to test their limit through a number of common exercises. And just as he thought, they were… not very good.
Farrie had fainted after 80 push-ups. Welt was a little bit better, but he had also collapsed when he reached the 99th jumping jack coming after the push-ups. And Tersia could handle the two previous exercises quite well, but also had to give up after the first lap around the castle.
"Shirou-sensei… is… a… fucking… sadist…" the latter gasped out in exhaustion and pain. EMIYA smiled at her while looking down at her body.
"Ah, that's just a simple, normal training routine. From now on, we're going to do this everyday in the afternoon, after level grinding. And after you all get used to it, we're going to increase the intensity."
Welt and Tersia paled. Farrie would have, too, had she not been too busy lying unconscious on the ground.
EMIYA rolled his eyes. "Oh, stop being such crybabies. This happens just because you haven't trained like this before in your life. Once you get used to it, it will become something like a daily chore to you."
Tersia glared at him.
The ex-Guardian deadpanned. "I did every one of those exercises together with you. And I'm still fine, see?"
The girl's glare tripled in intensity. "Oh, sure, just compare three kids who hadn't trained before in their lives with a war veteran who had been through countless wars; there's no problem with that, isn't there?"
EMIYA felt his eyebrow twitching. Cheeky little brat. That girl's mouth must be as sharp as Rin's.
Sure, snarking at others is fun, but it's not funny anymore when you're the one being snarked at.
"Ah, if you already have the strength to be cheeky," he smiled at her, a bit too sweetly for her own good, "then I guess another two laps around the castle is nothing to you, hmm?"
Tersia gulped.
After that day, stories about a sadist who forces children to run laps around the royal castle spread around Castle Town like a forest fire.
That night, they stayed at an inn in the town.
Staying outside is not something bad, but the three teenagers were already exhausted from their training today; it would be heartless to force them to stay outside all night like that. Besides, the girls needed their beauty bath; EMIYA was sure that they would riot if he forced them to go skinny dipping in the river.
And oh boy, he was glad that he did that.
After having his own bath that night, he went to the bar to get something to drink. He doesn't like drinking alcohol, but it's not like he could live without drinking some kind of liquid. Fruit juice or even a beer would be fine, though.
And he saw Farrie on a table at the corner of the tavern. She was reading a pretty thick book; it seemed she was completely absorbed into the content of the book, because she didn't even realize that EMIYA had come and sat on the chair in front of her.
He cleared his throat, and just as expected, the girl nearly jumped out of her chair in surprise.
"My God! Shirou-sensei, don't do that!" she complained.
He chuckled. "Sorry. But if I didn't do that, you're going to sit there and read until morning, aren't you?"
The girl scratched her cheek in embarrassment. "Well, I really like reading, so…"
"What are you reading, though?" the ex-Guardian looked at the book curiously. Farrie smiled.
"Oh, just a book about the history of the Church I borrowed from the Church library. I think it might help us know more about the Waves and what we're going to fight…"
"Can I have a look?"
The girl nodded and gave him the book with a smile. He flipped it open to the first page…
…and realized that he couldn't understand anything.
His brain stopped for a moment. How does that even happen? He could understand what people said well enough, so why couldn't he make sense of what he was looking at in the book?
TRANSLATION
The Legendary Weapons can translate the speech of citizens of other worlds automatically and instantly.
EMIYA facepalmed. So it meant he could understand what people said because the Legendary Sword automatically translated every word he heard straight into his mind without him even realizing it. It never said that it could translate what he saw.
"Shirou-sensei? What's wrong?" Farrie asked worriedly.
"Farrie, there's something I need you to do for me," he looked at the girl with serious eyes, and she blinked.
"Yes?"
"I need you to teach me how to read."
The good thing? The language of this world actually is something that EMIYA had known about before.
The bad thing? It is German.
Yes. The language of this world is actually a version of German using an alphabet filled with letters that look like worms. And it's embarrassing for EMIYA to say that while he's not that good with languages in general, this language is the one he dislikes the most, not only because it is freakishly difficult, but also because he'd had some bad experience dealing with Germans in the past.
He did learn some German during his journey, but only enough to make some basic conversations, such as asking for direction or borrowing a towel. It definitely wasn't enough to read a book as thick as an encyclopedia.
Well, at least it's not something like Sanskrit or worse, Egyptian hieroglyph, he thought when trying to remember a letter in the alphabet he was looking at. "So… this is 'I', isn't it?"
"*sigh* No sensei, that is 'upsilon'. Again, please…"
A week passed in a blink of an eye.
EMIYA had to say that he was proud of his little merry band. They absorbed what he taught them much faster than he had thought, and the levels they gained from slaying monsters in the morning, together with the exercises he forced them to do everyday, had helped their body develop quite significantly compared to how they used to be. Right now, Tersia had even grown to the point she could spar with him with her sword.
Sparring was just a way to talk, though. It's more like EMIYA beating the shit out of the poor girl with Torashinai.
[Name: Torashinai – Quality: Common – Base Power: 0]
[Unique Skill: Training I (0/100), Mercy]
[Proficiency: 0%]

The bamboo sword has neither base power nor stat bonus, but it gives him as well as his training partner the ability to gain EXP in mock battles, even though the rate wasn't as high as when they kill monsters. Also, he can't use it to kill anything. It serves brilliantly the purpose it was made for: a training sword. Still, he had to give a compliment to the Legendary Sword; even a mundane weapon like the cursed shinai of the Tiger of Fuyuki became sturdy enough to handle clashing with a weapon like Tersia's huge sword without breaking when copied by it.
Although he had to admit, giving a skill named "Mercy" to a terrifying weapon like Torashinai is just plain… wrong.
"An opening!"
EMIYA casually bashed the surprise attack aside and smashed Torashinai on Tersia's shoulder. "Don't scream it out when you see an opportunity to attack your opponent," he chided her.
Tersia dropped her sword and slumped to the ground. She rubbed her shoulder in annoyance. "Shirou-sensei is the most unfair thing in the universe, ever," she complained.
"Since when has life been fair to anyone?" the red hero answered nonchalantly, which gained him a glare from the girl.
Then he heard yells from somewhere on the other side of the clearing. He couldn't see the owner of the voice, but he knew immediately who it belonged to. He turned back to his team.
"Right, I think that's enough for today. Let's finish it up here, and can you guys go get some water from the river and gather some wood to make a bonfire? Tonight we're going to cook here."
Those words earned a cheer from the three teenagers. Since they first got the taste of the pork skewers, they had been smitten with the red hero's cooking. Forgetting all the exhaustion in their bodies, the three immediately ran away to do their tasks. Soon, there was only EMIYA left in the clearing. He started walking towards the direction of the screams before, and sure enough, he found Naofumi there, furiously smashing the Legendary Shield on a red balloon.
Looking at the Shield Hero, EMIYA couldn't help but winced. Even though it seemed he put all of his strength into it, the damage he managed to cause to the balloon was barely scratch damage.
After about five minutes, the balloon finally exploded. But Naofumi was clearly exhausted from the effort he spent on making that happen. He slumped on a collapsed tree nearby and sighed, seemingly overcome by fatigue.
The ex-Guardian walked towards the exhausted Shield Hero. "Things don't look so good, huh?"
Seeing the Sword Hero, Naofumi's face immediately twisted into a scowl.
"What do you want?" he asked in a cold, hostile voice, and EMIYA flinched when he saw the Shield Hero's eyes. But he kept his calm and sat down next to his fellow Hero on the tree trunk.
"What, am I not allowed to check up on my fellow Hero?" he asked. "Remember, I was the one who gave you a warning about that woman."
Naofumi glared at him. "Oh, I see. So you're here to laugh at my face?" he snapped. "About how I disregarded your wise advice? That I brought this on myself?"
EMIYA looked at him sternly. "I never said that, and you will never hear me say that. Do you really think that I was someone who would say something that heartless?"
"How can I be sure?" Naofumi retorted with a scathing voice. "From what I know, you might as well be someone who would come at me with a good face then backstab me. How can I know that you're anything different from that bitch?"
EMIYA grimaced. He could feel despair and hatred pouring out of the body of the man sitting next to him, tainted the air around them. And for a moment, he felt something stirring in his mind.
However, what he felt for the fallen Hero was not fear, nor was it anger.
It was pity.
He understood how and why Naofumi was reduced to what he was looking at right now. How couldn't he understand, because he had experienced it himself. He had been betrayed by the very same people he was supposed to protect. And he still remembered how bitter he had been, not to the World, not to anyone who had betrayed him, but to himself, and had gone so close to madness that he had resorted to a drastically extreme method to try to find a way to erase himself from existence.
His face hardened. He had been given a chance to live his life once more. And he's not going to let another person walk into the hell he had walked into.
"I understand how you feel," he looked at the Shield Hero, "but acting like that won't do you any good."
"Don't you dare say that you understand me," Naofumi snarled. He shot up from the tree trunk he was sitting on. "What do you even know? Do you know how it feels to be betrayed by someone you thought might be the one you could trust? Do you know how it feels to be humiliated and treated like a criminal? Like what happened to me? I bet you don't! So don't sit around and say that you understand my pain!"
EMIYA had let Naofumi finish his rant without interruption. Then, when the Shield Hero finally stopped, a little bit out of breath, he looked at his eyes.
"I haven't told you what happened before I was summoned, have I?"
Naofumi snarled again. "What does that have to do with this?"
The ex-Guardian looked at the sky. "The moment I was summoned, I was on my way to the gallows."
All the anger and hostility were seemingly drained from Naofumi at once. "What?"
"Yeah," the Sword Hero nodded. "When I was about to be executed, I was summoned to this world."
Naofumi stared at the hero in red. Sure, he might have been bitter and full of distrust, but even in his dream, he couldn't imagine the Sword Hero being a convict. "Why?" he uttered that single word in disbelief.
"Why, you ask?" EMIYA chuckled bitterly. "That's the result of trying your best to stop a war, and then the people that you saved turned on you and said you were the one who caused that war. Life is just unfair like that, isn't it?"
For a split second, Naofumi wanted to laugh at the red hero's face, "Ha, and I am the king of Melromarc." But for some reason, the words seemed to get stuck in his throat.
He wasn't very experienced when it comes to judging what people said. And it's true that he doubted the Sword Hero was telling the truth. But at the same time, he didn't think that the man in red was lying, either. Why? Because of his honest expression? Because it was too similar to what he was experiencing right now? Naofumi didn't know.
"I don't believe you," Finally, the Shield Hero said. "There's no way things could be so convenient. First, this world condemned me for what I didn't even do, and now you, coming from nowhere, tell me that you have experienced the same thing? Ha, only third-rate manga could have that kind of plot. You're not going to trick me."
"You might believe me or not, I don't care," the ex-Guardian looked into Naofumi's eyes and said simply. "But, as someone who has experienced this beforehand, I just want to give you a piece of advice. Don't let yourself be consumed by hatred and despair. Not everyone around you is evil bastards who treat people like rapists. Unlike me, you still have your chance to prove that you are not the person people claimed you to be. Don't let that chance go to waste."
Then he stood up. But before leaving, he turned around and looked at Naofumi from head to toe, as if appraising the man. After a few seconds, he raised his right hand.
The air started rippling. In the palm of EMIYA's hand, a ball of light appeared and glowed brightly. Then it started changing shape, forming something that looked suspiciously like a cross hung on a round shelf. When the light died down, Naofumi let out a gasp of surprise.
In front of him was the biggest shield he had ever seen. It was as tall as Naofumi himself was, and had the shape of a combination between a cross and a large round shield. It exuded an aura of power and authority which even Naofumi, someone who hadn't had any experience with weapons in the past, could feel and marvel under just from looking at it.
"This is the shield entrusted to me by a person I was very close to," the red Hero looked at him. "That person was a Shielder just like you, and she spent all of her life fighting for the sake of the world, for humankind and the people she cherished, even when she was stripped of all her power. And here and now, I will entrust it to you. Whether you can use it or not depends solely on you. Do not let me, and the owner of this shield, down."
Then he walked away. Naofumi looked at the back of the retreating Sword Hero until he disappeared from his view. Then he looked at the shield in front of him, and hesitantly, he used the Legendary Shield to copy it. Upon being copied, the shield started fading away into glitters of light.
"Shirou-san… just who the hell are you…?"
