Chapter 13 – Gals being pals…
Brittany…
The new year started pretty good. Brittany and aunt Patty both worked at the shop for several shifts and in order to celebrate a little, aunt Patty invited Brittany for dinner at a small restaurant. She was allowed to order anything she wanted and so they sat there until late at night with their milkshakes and ice cream.
Brittany almost told her aunt about how her New Year's Eve had ended. She told her about Blaine's party and that she had fun and everything… but she didn't tell her about how she went to see Santana right before midnight. How they hugged each other so tight and how they smoked and drank alcohol for the first time.
She didn't tell her about the kiss. It felt like something she wasn't supposed to tell anyone. She wasn't quite sure why but it seemed like it was something just between Santana and herself. Maybe forever.
She also didn't know what aunt Patty would have to say to that. She didn't want to jeopardize the fragile bond they had built.
But Brittany did have a certain desire to tell someone about that special kiss. It was special because it was the first kiss she really liked. Not that she had much to compare but it was truly better than what she had imagined.
Telling Quinn would have felt wrong because Brittany didn't know if Santana was ok with that.
She could have told Blaine but that also required some explaining. He probably would have understood but she didn't feel like explaining anything. Especially if it felt so nice.
So basically the only person she could talk to was Santana. She was the only one who knew and the only one that Brittany didn't feel like she had to explain herself to. Ever.
That was the funny thing about their friendship. Brittany never felt weird or like she had to pretend. Everything seemed very honest with Santana. Like they could be whoever they wanted to be around each other. Without getting questioned.
That's what she was thinking about when she approached the brunette at her locker.
Santana was standing there with an open history book in her hands, her forehead in frowns.
It was the first day back at school and Brittany had honestly longed for that day to come. As much as she started to like aunt Patty - she needed to be around people her age.
Brittany cleared her throat when she was just a couple steps away from her friend. She thought about what to say. The last time they spoke was the night they kissed. She wasn't sure if things were ok between them. They were ok then. Brittany had asked once they stopped kissing.
If everything was ok.
She remembers Santana's face. It was soft and very much at ease. Maybe a little flustered.
They both chuckled about what happened. Santana said yes. She was ok. Brittany believed her because that's what her eyes were telling, too. But today she was suddenly insecure. What if the kiss was the only thing she could think about from now on every time she spotted Santana somewhere in the crowd? Or when they'd sit down to have lunch together or whenever Brittany would take the brunette to her favorite spot?
After the kiss they sat outside for a long time, either watching the stars silently or talking about stuff like movies or places they'd like to go see one day.
When they said goodnight with a hug, Brittany felt as light as a feather. But also heavy.
It was strange…
"Hey" Santana greeted her when Brittany opened her mouth but nothing came out at first. She exhaled a weirdly shaky breath instead. Santana's eyes were warm and inviting.
"Are you ready for your physics test?" She wanted to know. Brittany had no idea what she was talking about.
"My-"
"Don't tell me you forgot."
She totally forgot.
Why on earth did she forget she had the damn test today?
"Oh…" She breathed. She was definitely screwed.
"Brittany… you already blew that last one. What time do you have it?"
Brittany tried to think but it was hard when Santana closed her locker a little too loudly.
"Right after lunch."
"Ok. We can do some crash theory during lunch then. My history homework isn't that important."
Brittany just nodded because it sounded like a good plan to do some studying. Then she remembered what she actually wanted to talk to Santana about.
"Hey uhm… I just wanted to ask if… if you're ok."
Santana looked up from the history book in her hand.
"Of course. Why wouldn't I be?"
Brittany tried to focus on her answer because for a short moment she almost forgot what had been on her mind. Or everything.
"Because I wasn't sure about how you felt about – about the kiss. When we kissed." Since Santana didn't answer right away Brittany felt the urge to specify. "At New Year's-"
"I know." Santana uttered quickly. She threw a glance into Brittany's face but it was obvious she had a hard time sharing eye contact. "Everything's fine. It was just a kiss. You don't have to be worried about our friendship."
Brittany narrowed her eyes because she wasn't worried about their friendship.
"Ok. I just… since it was your first kiss I thought it would be terrible if it was a bad one or something. I hope I didn't push you – since it was my idea. I don't know… I just don't want it to be a bad experience for you. I'd feel guilty."
Santana waited until a group of students passed by them.
"No… it wasn't bad."
When she glanced up, Brittany swallowed. Her eyes dropped to the brunette's lips once.
"Wait – why do you think I'm worried about our friendship? Are you? Nothing's changed, right? We're still friends, right?" Brittany tried to cover up the desperation in her voice by clearing her throat.
Santana's eyes did the same thing that Brittany's had just done before. When they locked once again, Brittany was scared of what Santana was going to say.
"Of course." She simply answered. It made Brittany feel relieved but it only lasted for a couple seconds.
She didn't know why.
"But I don't think we should tell Quinn. I wouldn't want her to feel left out. I mean – not that I wanted to include her or do the same thing with her- I mean…" She stopped talking when she must have seen the way Brittany almost burst into laughter.
The idea of including Quinn was just too funny. And the way Santana's cheeks blushed in the same way like right after their kiss was amusing.
"You know what I meant!" Santana said hastily and put a strand of hair behind her ear.
"Yeah. Also I don't think Quinn would enjoy it that much", Brittany chuckled and froze when she felt someone grabbing her elbow.
"I wouldn't enjoy what?" Their friend wanted to know when she appeared out of nowhere. Brittany had no idea how much Quinn had heard of their conversation. Her heart was beating in her chest when she saw the shock in Santana's face. It quickly turned into a smile though.
"Your baby shower. I just told Brittany about my ideas."
Quinn's face beamed when she heard those words.
"You guys are throwing me a baby shower? I had no idea! Ok well… I actually do have some own ideas that I'd like to throw in."
And with that the subject had changed. With Quinn in their middle they made their way through the hallways, pushing their conversation out of the way. Brittany didn't know if they were ever going to pick it up again. It didn't exactly seem like Santana was very much up to it and so she was going to accept that.
/
When Quinn went home for lunch and Brittany and Santana sat down at a table in the back of the cafeteria where it would be a little quieter, Brittany didn't dare to come up with the kiss anymore. They used the time to try and get some of that physics into her head but it was pretty much a lost case.
At one point Brittany decided that it was easier to pretend like she knew what Santana was explaining to her instead of asking her to explain again.
Slower. With simpler words.
She just didn't get it. She didn't know how all the other students got it. It was so endlessly complex to her that she didn't have the nerve to try harder.
So she pretended as if she finally got it and earned a pleased smile from Santana who seemed exhausted, too after forty minutes of explaining. She wished Brittany good luck when they said goodbye after lunch and twenty minutes later, Brittany was sitting in the backrow of the classroom, a half empty test in front of her and the hope of getting a good grade once and for all leaving her.
It was pointless… everything with numbers confused her. Not just that… she also wasn't great in English or history. Gym class was the only thing she was at the top of her class.
So she sat there until the bell rang, not satisfied with any of her answers on the test. She went home as fast as she could, without waiting for Blaine or Santana or anyone to drive home on their bikes together. She just wanted to be alone and dance. It was the only thing that made her mind feel at ease whenever something stressed her out.
/
The next couple weeks went on exactly like that. She wrote tests, ignored the teachers' pathetic looks when she returned them and went home frustrated. She didn't talk to aunt Patty whenever she asked about how school was going and she didn't say yes anymore when Santana or Quinn offered to help her study.
It wasn't helping. It only made Brittany feel worse because they were both a year younger than her but they knew better how to do it.
At one point her two best friends seemed to accept that she didn't want their help. They stopped talking about grades eventually and focused on other stuff like Quinn's growing baby bump or the upcoming prom.
Brittany was thankful. It made her forget about the fact that there was a possibility that she was not going to graduate. The thought scared her so she was glad to push it away. She knew perfectly well that she should have cared more. She just couldn't bring herself to do so.
She welcomed those opportunities that kept her mind off bad grades… such as singing and dancing in Blaine's basement, working shifts at the shop, knitting baby clothes with Quinn or teaching Santana how to drive.
It was the one and only thing Brittany was better at and probably the only thing in the world Santana wasn't good at.
In fact she was terrible. Sometimes Brittany would take her on a dusty old road and let her sit in the driver's seat. As soon as she started the engine, Santana got nervous and forgot everything Brittany had just told her.
"Santana… the clutch is on the left, the gas on the right and the brake in the middle." Brittany tried once again one Friday evening. Santana had just stalled out the truck for the fourth time. Brittany was worried the battery wasn't going to make it much longer but she also wanted the brunette to try again.
"I know all that" Santana hissed in frustration when she started the engine once more.
"Then why do you keep forgetting about the clutch? You can't drive with your foot pressing all the way down."
"But I just lifted off the clutch."
"Yeah – after I reminded you but then you did it too fast. Just a little bit slower and a bit more gas. Not too much though."
"Brittany" Santana whined. "You say all those contrary things. I hate the stick shift! It's never moving when I need it to move into second gear-"
"Because you can't move the stick shift without pressing down on the clutch. How many times do I have to tell you?"
"But-"
"Focus, woman! Just do what I say, ok?"
Santana threw an annoyed look to her right. Brittany couldn't help but chuckle at that look. She was frustrated with Santana but she was also amused.
"You're not the most patient teacher" Santana muttered under her breath when she tried once more. Brittany just shook her head.
She already wanted to scold Santana because it looked like she forgot about the clutch. But then she remembered and the next thing Brittany knew was how the car was moving. Utterly slowly and bumpily but it was moving.
"Oh my God" Santana whispered, probably scared to ruin it. "I'm doing it. Brittany! What do I do next?"
Brittany clapped her hands together and instructed Santana how to upshift into a higher gear. It worked and soon enough Santana was driving the car in a slow but steady way.
They both laughed with excitement. Brittany turned up the music for just a couple seconds to give Santana a hint of what she loved so much about driving.
"Ok, ok I want to stop – how do I stop?" Santana said nervously when she had enough for the day. Or night. It was already dark when Brittany explained how to come to a stop. She wanted to tell her not to make a hard stop but it was too late. Santana stepped onto the brake like it was the last thing she was going to do, causing them both to jerk forward.
"Ow!" Brittany moaned with a pained laughter. "My neck…"
"I'm so sorry!" Santana giggled when she finally turned off the engine. Two seconds later Brittany felt a hand on the back of her neck.
She shuddered because Santana's hand was cold. Which was pleasant against the pain.
"I'm sorry" Santana repeated when they looked at each other, her hand still hidden in Brittany's hair. "Are you ok? Did I break you?"
Brittany laughed gently and shook her head. The feeling of Santana's hand against her skin was… nice. She kind of wanted the night to last forever. She knew that wasn't the case though.
"Nah… everything's fine. But I'll drive us home if you don't mind."
Santana joined her chuckle. Eventually she pulled her hand back and handed the keys over to Brittany.
"I'd like that."
They both got out of the truck in order to change seats and once Brittany was back behind the wheel, she apologized for being impatient in the beginning. But Santana waved it off.
They said goodbye that night with a light hug and some remaining chuckles. Brittany watched until Santana was safe inside her house before heading back to the trailer.
That night she went to bed with a smile on her face and a growing motivation for the upcoming weeks to teach Santana more driving lessons
/
Quinn…
She hadn't imagined her first prom to be like that. No longer fitting into the dress she had bought with her mom months ago, not allowed to go with the boy she liked and a curfew to be more than embarrassed about.
It was better than nothing though. She had honestly been surprised when her parents told her she was allowed to go to prom this year. Under several conditions of course but she was just thankful to have a little bit of normality back.
She was so excited when she and Santana were waiting for Brittany to come pick them up. If she wasn't allowed to go with Jake, she was at least going to have the best of fun with the best of friends.
Her mom was waiting with them in the living room when finally the doorbell ran and her dad let Brittany inside. For the first time Quinn saw the blonde wearing a dress. Her hair was straightened and even though she wasn't wearing makeup, she looked prettier and girlier than ever before.
"Look at these perfect three young women" Her mom said when Brittany joined them in the living room. Quinn's dad nodded proudly and pulled three wrist corsages from a drawer.
He put one on Quinn's wrist while her mom did the same to Brittany. When she was done, Brittany took the last one and held it up for Santana.
Quinn watched happily when Brittany put the corsage on Santana's wrist because it matched her navy-blue dress perfectly and they all were going to look just stunning.
"You look really beautiful" Brittany said to the shorter girl. Quinn grinned when Santana almost bashfully put a strand of hair behind her ear.
It was true though. Santana looked like princess from a foreign country or something. Quinn always thought that her friend was the best-looking girl she knew but she never envied her. Instead she was proud to be friends with the prettiest girl at school. The only thing she never quite understood was how Santana never had a boyfriend. They simply all would have wanted to be with her. But they always had something that Santana declared as a deal breaker.
Quinn accepted it and eventually stopped trying to hook Santana up with one of Jake's friends. She wasn't interested and that was that. One day the perfect guy would show up and mesmerize her. Maybe a guy who transferred from another school or something. He'd just show up out of nowhere and Santana would finally fall in love, too.
Quinn couldn't wait for that to happen. She really wanted Santana to find love and happiness.
"Time to take some pictures before you girls have to leave!" Quinn's mom ushered the three of them together so she could take a picture with her huge polaroid camera.
Quinn put an arm around Brittany's waist and when they all beamed towards the lens, she couldn't help but feel utterly happy.
The camera took a moment until it was ready. Brittany said something really funny and they all laughed wholeheartedly the moment the first picture was taken.
"It's so nice you girls have each other" Quinn's mom said when she waited for the picture to dry. "Me and my pals were just the same back in the day. Always giggling, always talking about boys…"
Quinn swallowed when she listened to her mother wallowing in memories. It kind of hurt to hear her talking about how she was just like her when she was younger, yet she was punishing Quinn by not letting her go to prom with Jake tonight. Her mom should have understood.
"At high school there's nothing more important than friendship. You girls have to make sure to never jeopardize it."
Quinn tried to cover up the hurt by giving her mom a smile and throwing a glance to her left. She saw how Brittany was gazing at Santana. Almost a bit regretful.
Quinn wondered if Brittany was nervous about what was going to come next in life. She was going to graduate from high school a whole year before Santana and herself. Maybe she was scared that they were going to lose touch.
Quinn took a mental note to tell Brittany that she didn't have to worry. Her mom was right… friendship was the most important thing and she wanted to make sure that theirs was going to last.
/
Her euphoria about going to prom subsided soon. It was exhausting to dance and walk in heels, her back hurt and she was hot. Being pregnant was everything she had ever seen in movies or read in books. She was uncomfortable and she was surprisingly thankful about her curfew. She wanted to go home and drink tea in bed but the fact that this was going to be the only night she was allowed to stay out with her friends let her power through it a little longer.
Santana and Brittany kept bringing her something to drink and they took breaks from dancing after every single song. At one point she told them that it was ok for her to sit at a table on her own for a while. She desperately needed to give her aching feet a break, so she took off her heels and laughed when Santana waved at her from the dance floor.
Quinn was glad that they were having a good time. She wouldn't have wanted to be a burden to any of them.
"May I offer my services of a foot massage?"
Quinn startled when she realized someone was standing right next to her.
"Jake!" She gasped when she looked up. He was wearing a black suit and a bowtie, shiny shoes and a smile that made her knees go weak. She really wanted to jump up and hug him but she was too exhausted. Plus her feet were killing her. There was no way she was going to use them any time soon.
Jake seemed to know about her inner turmoil so he leaned down and wrapped his arms around her and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
"You look so pretty" He whispered when he took the chair next to her and grabbed her legs.
She almost moaned out loud when he started massaging her feet gently. It was the best feeling ever.
"I know your parents don't want us to get too close but I figured we'd make an exception. It's prom and… you're already pregnant so nothing can happen, right?" He chuckled when Quinn rolled her eyes. "Also I think it's silly that they don't want us to be together. We're having a baby. We should be together. My mom said you could live with us."
Quinn swallowed painfully when she saw the hope in his eyes.
"I know that's not what you want right now… but the offer stands. If you ever change your mind."
She knew why she fell for him in the first place. It wasn't because of his ridiculously good looks or his dance moves or his charm. It was because of that soft side of his. The way he could make her heart beat faster by giving her a smile or by the way he knew exactly what she needed with just one look at her feet.
"You're the one for me" She whispered against his cheek when he leaned closer. "I know one thing for sure and that is that you and I will live together one day. Together with our baby girl."
When she saw his eyes widen she realized her slip. She wanted it to be a surprise but now she knew that this was even better.
"You're having a girl? Seriously?" He muttered under his breath. Quinn pulled him closer and let her forehead rest against his.
"We… we are having a girl, Jake. And you're going to be the cutest daddy ever."
Jake grabbed her face and kissed her furiously. Then gently. When they pulled apart he wiped away a tear so Quinn took him in for a tight embrace. It wasn't the easiest thing because of the baby bump but it made her feel like everything was going to be ok. With the baby between them, protecting it from all the bad things out there.
With her head on his shoulders she let her tired eyes wander to the dance floor. There were Blaine, Brittany and Santana and some other boy that seemed to spend a lot of time with Blaine lately.
She didn't know him well but he was one of those Glee kids, too. Quinn watched how they were all dancing to an upbeat song, laughing and imitating each other's dance moves. While she kind of wanted to be part of all the fun, she was more than fine where she was right now.
Also she didn't think she'd fit in there right now. Not just because of her belly but it seemed like the four of them were something like a unit. The way they were dancing, forgetting about everyone surrounding them.
She kind of hoped that this boy was maybe Blaine's secret boyfriend. Well… being someone's secret boyfriend or girlfriend wasn't too much fun. She knew all too well… but she just would have been so happy for Blaine. He never responded to the rumors about him being gay but it seemed so obvious.
She didn't even know why she allowed herself to think like that. She assumed something she simply didn't know. But if he was… then this Kurt boy would have made a great match. They looked so comfortable when dancing with each other.
Kind of like Brittany and Santana. Quinn hummed happily when she saw her childhood friend giggling at something that Brittany did.
When the song faded out and a slower one started playing, Quinn felt the desire to dance with Jake, too. It seemed like an impossible thing to do tonight.
"Have you ever slow danced while sitting down?" Jake's voice sounded in her ear.
"Huh?"
"I'll show you… it goes like that."
Quinn bit her bottom lip when Jake pulled his chair a little closer and held her like they were about to dance. Then he started moving just his upper body gently to the music, guiding Quinn to do the same.
She chuckled when she realized that they were in fact dancing while sitting down. It didn't feel weird even if it looked weird.
It felt nice.
She let her head rest against his neck once again and smelled his perfume, her eyes steering back to her friends. She nearly burst with excitement when she saw Blaine and the other boy actually dancing like a couple, too. It was the cutest thing she had ever seen. Nobody seemed to notice… or they didn't care because they were happy to be with someone they liked, too.
Quinn already wanted to tell Jake to turn his head so he could see but something stopped her. It was the way Brittany and Santana were standing there, too.
The way Santana put a strand of hair behind her ear just like she had done earlier at home. She always did that when she was bashful or irritated. Or insecure.
She looked up into Brittany's face. Quinn wondered if maybe they were going to dance with each other. They wouldn't have been the only girls dancing together. Every year there were several disappointed girls who didn't have a date to prom and would end up dancing together, giggling and enjoying the fun.
Quinn witnessed how Brittany's hands took Santana's in her own. They weren't giggling and they weren't trying to cheer each other up. It didn't look like that. It looked like something different.
Eventually they were slow dancing, too. Brittany holding Santana gently around her waist while Santana's hands were on Brittany's upper arms.
Brittany said something to Santana but Quinn couldn't hear it. She didn't think anyone was supposed to hear…
For a couple seconds Quinn's view got blocked by another couple dancing in front of her two friends. She kept her eyes trained on the spot. When she saw them again, she knew she wasn't looking at just her friends. She was looking at her friends being lost in each other.
It blew her mind.
Completely.
Then something kicked her stomach and she already thought Jake hit her with his knee or something. An instant later she realized that it was the baby.
"Oh my God!" She gasped and pulled back. She put her hands on her stomach, waiting eagerly.
"What? What is it? Is something hurting?" Jake wanted to know, fear written across his face.
"No!" Quinn laughed. She grabbed his hand and put it under hers. "It's kicking. She's saying hello."
Jake stared at their hands on her belly and his jaw dropped when they both felt it for the second time.
"Holy crap, Quinn" He mumbled in astonishment. "She's gonna be a dancer, I can feel it."
Quinn giggled at Jake's discovery. She was so happy that she didn't have anything to say against that. She let Jake kiss her hands and then her cheeks and her lips.
She would have believed him anything tonight.
/
Santana…
The cold night air quickly dried the sweat on her forehead. She had the window rolled down and let her hand fly up and down with the speed of Brittany's truck.
A couple minutes ago they had to hurry to the parking lots at school because it was almost past Quinn's curfew. They basically had to drag her away from Jake and carried her shoes and purse outside.
Brittany put on some nice music and they were all still in the mood to dance and have fun but they knew better not to mess with Quinn's parents or they'd never let her step one foot out of her room.
They laughed amusedly when Quinn told them about sappy Jake and cheered loudly when she declared they were having a girl. It was a perfect night.
They blew Quinn a kiss when they watched her walking towards her waiting mother in the driveway after saying goodnight.
"Thanks again for the ride…" Santana said when Brittany started the engine.
"No problem. I'm sure next year you can drive us." She winked at Santana when she threw a glance at her before focusing on the road.
"You think I'll have the permit by then?"
"Of course. You're getting really good at it. Want to have another driving lesson tonight?"
Santana laughed and shook her head.
"I had punch, remember? That really wouldn't be a good idea. But uh… what makes you think you'll be here for prom next year? You're graduating. You'll be off to dance school somewhere. Or dancing in a music video of a famous band."
Santana looked to her side but Brittany kept her eyes straight forward.
"Yeah well… not if I keep sucking at everything I do."
Santana made a huffing noise.
"Don't talk like that about yourself! You're a great dancer – you definitely have a future with that."
"But dancing won't get me through school. I keep getting bad grades… I'm not sure I'll ever make it out of high school."
Santana shook her head. Sometimes it was hard to convince Brittany of something she had her doubts with. Especially when it came to stuff she wasn't good at.
"But let's not talk about it tonight. I had so much fun and I don't want it to be over just yet. I'll sulk tomorrow."
Santana thought for a moment. She was fine with getting to have some more of that fun, too.
"Well… we could go back to prom. I'm sure Blaine and Kurt are looking for us by now."
Brittany tilted her head to the side.
"I wouldn't count on that. They seemed to be just fine with each other. But we could go to our spot if you want? I'm sure we'll be able to count hundreds of stars tonight. It might help me get better at math."
Santana chuckled. The fact that Brittany just referred to the spot as 'their' spot was surprising though.
"Sure… I'd like that." She mumbled. Brittany grinned.
"Great. I just need to make a quick detour to the trailer. This dress is so uncomfortable, I need to get out of it. I'm so itchy…"
Santana was fine with that. Her dress was super comfortable but she could tell that Brittany didn't feel the same way about hers. She grinned when the blonde turned up the music. She put her hand out the window once more to feel the breeze against it. It felt like freedom on her skin. Like anything could happen that night.
/
She waited patiently in the truck while Brittany was in the trailer. It was getting colder and she hoped that Brittany still had those blankets in the back otherwise it was going to be freezing out there. The beginning of spring was doing its best but it didn't take a lot for Santana to feel chilly.
When Brittany returned with an extra jacket, Santana could have kissed her.
She looked so much more like herself in her blue jeans, her converse sneakers and a comfortable shirt. Her big grin only confirmed Santana's impression.
Ten minutes later Santana pulled the collar of Brittany's lined denim jacket up to her chin. They sat down on a comfy blanket in the back of the truck after having reached their spot in the desert.
They had done that several times in the past couple weeks. Just hopped onto the back and watched the stars side by side. It was almost like a free show. They saw shooting stars all the time.
They never spoke out loud what they wished for…
"I didn't think you'd dance with me" Brittany said after a while of silently gazing up to the sky. Santana felt a tremble going through her body. Which was funny because she was comfortable with Brittany's jacket and her side got warmed, too by sitting so close to each other.
"Me neither" She admitted honestly.
She thought she'd chicken out when Brittany asked if she wanted to dance to that slow song.
Well… she didn't exactly ask. She just took Santana's hands and that was it. She also didn't think they'd talk about it. Just like they never really talked about the kiss.
Brittany tried to but Santana always changed the subject. It somehow felt like a delicate thing to her. Like she might get hurt but she wasn't sure why. Brittany was the sincerest person she knew.
"Did you like it?" Brittany wanted to know.
From the corner of her eye Santana saw how Brittany's face turned towards her. She wanted to do the same but her trembling body told her to wait.
Instead she nodded. That was easier.
"Me, too" Brittany whispered.
They fell into silence for a while after that. Santana was thankful. It gave her time to think. To process. She was having so many thoughts and sensations at the same time.
"That's a long one…" Brittany said eventually and pointed to the sky. Santana narrowed her eyes.
"That's a plane, Britt." She clarified with a grin.
"Oh" The blonde chuckled knowingly. "Well… I'll still make a wish on that one."
This time Santana's head turned to the side, too because she got curious.
Brittany was already gazing at her, longingly. Santana knew that face. She had seen it so many times in the past couple weeks.
She caught Brittany often. Which only meant that Santana was looking, too.
"What did you wish for?" She nearly whispered. She knew she wasn't going to get an answer but it was worth a try.
"Can't say or it won't come true" Brittany responded with a gentle shrug.
"Did they come true lately?"
Brittany slowly shook her head, her eyes no longer looking into Santana's because they were hanging on her mouth.
"Not yet…" She muttered.
Santana closed her eyes. She really wanted to kiss Brittany. So badly. There was an undying desire inside of her ever since they did that for the first time. But what did it say about them? About her?
She had no idea what it all meant. At the same time it was pretty clear to her and that was very scary.
She could her Brittany's breathing and the rustling sound of the blanket underneath them when she got on her knees. She grabbed her purse and pulled something out of it.
Brittany's eyes widened when she saw the item.
"Where did you get that?" She asked baffled.
Santana looked at the flask in her hand.
"One of the cheerleaders gave it to me when I was in the bathroom. She said she got it from one of the seniors. Apparently it's punch from prom but spiked with… something gross. She gave it to me for courage."
Santana was still kneeling in front of Brittany and looked back and forth between the flask and Brittany's blue eyes.
It was dark but somehow her eyes never were. They were always blue and guiding Santana.
The blonde's lips parted when she gently took the bottle from Santana's hands. Santana was sure she was going to take the first sip. It's what helped them last time. But Brittany didn't open it. Instead it got lost somewhere between the blankets.
"No…" She whispered. Her hand was suddenly on Santana's cheek. It was so surprising that Santana nearly jumped. Then it calmed her. "You don't need that" Brittany added before coming closer and just inches left between them.
Santana raised her hand to let her fingers gently wrap around Brittany's wrist. She needed to hold on to something.
When their breaths mingled and eyes closed at the same time, Santana knew. Brittany was right. She was so much smarter than she thought. She always knew what Santana needed. Whether it was a hug or calming words or… this.
She wanted Brittany's wish to come true. Just like she wanted her own wishes to come true. Something told her they were the same. At least tonight.
She gave in eventually and kissed Brittany's lips as gentle as last time but with a lot more awareness. She couldn't believe the rush of butterflies that overwhelmed her.
After weeks of not kissing Brittany it felt like the first time all over again. It was only the second time but how could a second kiss feel like a first one?
Maybe because this time it was different. They were kissing because they wanted to repeat it and not because it was something to cross off her list.
While it started just as gentle as last time, it quickly became more than that. Because the way Brittany kissed her back… it was like their lips were fitting so perfectly. Like Brittany could not only dance with her body but also with her lips and they did wonders to Santana's insides.
It was so hot and cold at the same time. The warmth of the jacket and Brittany's mouth and cold because it was late at night and they were outside. But she didn't care. All she cared about was the way Brittany needed to catch her breath after several seconds but dived right back in by grabbing the back of her neck and guiding their lips together once more.
While Brittany's lips tasted so good and the sensation of their mouths against each other was already beyond exiting, Santana felt the desire to kiss her more. Deeper or somehow with more meaning. She wanted to show Brittany what was going on inside of her but she didn't know how. So she opened her mouth and hoped that somehow she'd understand.
When Brittany's warm tongue grazed against her own, she nearly passed out. She grabbed Brittany's shoulders for support and before she knew it, she got pulled into Brittany's lap.
She was sitting on top of her and they were kissing so deeply that Santana didn't think it could get any further than this. It was exactly what she had imagined pretty much every single night. But more. Because she didn't think she'd feel it inside. She always pictured it to feel nice against her lips, maybe her tongue. She didn't know she could feel it in her chest. It was racing in there and going up and down. Her cheeks were hot and her stomach did all kinds of funny things.
It felt so wonderful and it was overwhelming. Not in a bad way but in a surprising way.
Their tongues dipped into each other's mouths and their hands wandered from necks to shoulders and back. At one point Santana even felt Brittany's hand on her thigh. She didn't realize it at first but when it started to burn against the fabric of her dress, she needed air to breathe. She lowered her head to give their lips a break.
Her forehead was resting against Brittany's while her eyes observed the hand on her thigh. She breathed heavily when she realized what they were doing.
This was feeling so overwhelming and exiting because they were doing more than just kissing. A soft sigh escaped her lips. She couldn't help it but the way Brittany's hand burned a hole into her dress or how it wandered up eventually and came to a rest on her hip was just too much for her to handle.
She took Brittany's face into her hands and kissed her again. She had gotten used to that sensation by now. She kissed her with so much confidence that she almost forgot about that other sensation that was settling inside of her. When Brittany pulled her closer just a couple inches, she knew where it was coming from. It was something she wasn't ready for but something she knew so well from the times she had touched herself. It wasn't new but it was new when it involved Brittany in the flesh. She had been there in her thoughts but now it was just… overwhelming.
She must have radiated her thoughts or something because Brittany pulled away from Santana's hasty lips.
Instead she planted several kisses onto her jaw and one of them on her neck. While it didn't make her feel less exited, it gave her a sense of stability to her wobbly legs that were on either sides of Brittany's.
She swallowed and used the time to calm her breath. When she opened her eyes she saw Brittany glancing back at her before pressing another kiss to the palm of her hand. It was something so intimate. She saw the kiss against her palm but she felt it somewhere in her chest. Then she got pulled into a hug.
It was a warm and comforting hug she didn't even know she needed. She calmed instantly in Brittany's arms.
Not that she would have wanted to stop but she knew they had to. Otherwise they would have done something she didn't know how to handle. She hardly knew how to handle this.
She could almost hear Brittany's heartbeat calming, too. She knew it wasn't possible but then again they were so close to each other right now that maybe she did…
At one point she found herself rearranged next to Brittany. They were lying on their backs, looking up to the night sky and holding on to each other. Brittany had her arm around Santana making it so inviting to just put her head on her shoulder and rest.
That's what they did for a long time. Santana even fell asleep at one point. She only knew that because when she opened her eyes the next time, the night seemed to have shifted. It wasn't quite as dark anymore but still late. Or early. She didn't really care.
What she cared about was how Brittany helped her jumping from the back of the truck and how she opened the door like a gentleman to guide Santana inside.
She must have been tired, too but Brittany drove Santana home safely without yawning once. Santana did so several times and caused Brittany to laugh when she tried to hide it.
"I hope you won't get in trouble for coming home so late" Brittany said when it was time to say goodbye. Santana shook her head.
"Nah… my brothers stayed at my grandma's house and my dad is most definitely not even home himself. So… all good."
Brittany nodded relievedly.
"I'll see you at school on Monday?" She asked with a soft voice.
Santana nodded. She couldn't help herself when her hand wandered up to Brittany's face. She caressed her cheek once.
"Oh yeah… I can't wait to see you." She replied and caused the blonde to smirk. "Goodnight, Britt."
When she got out of the truck, she threw another look over her shoulder before stepping inside the house. Brittany waved at her and then drove off.
Santana's first prom had been the best she could have wished for.

Brittany…
To say she was surprised to find aunt Patty coming home just at the same time would have been an understatement. Apparently her new boyfriend had dropped her off and she was now smoking a cigarette before going inside.
Aunt Patty grinned funnily when Brittany jumped out of the truck and approached her. She came to a halt in front of her aunt who was sitting on a plastic chair.
"Well, well… pretty late to come home from a prom, young lady." She said with a knowing smirk. Brittany rolled her eyes and said that she obviously wasn't the only one coming home late. "That's right… so is a boy responsible for that big grin of yours?" Aunt Patty teased.
Brittany paused for a couple seconds. She didn't quite know what to say so she said nothing.
"Not denying is also an answer" Aunt Patty analyzed and grinned when Brittany walked by her to get inside. Brittany just clicked her tongue.
Right in that moment she realized that she felt for Santana the way she was supposed to feel for a boy. She went inside, dropped her jacket onto her chair and then fell into bed.
It didn't scare her… it just suddenly made sense. Why she always felt nervous around Santana and why she couldn't stop thinking about their kiss.
Well… now there were two kisses. Or so many more because tonight they didn't just kiss once. They kissed and made out for so long. She could have done so all night without getting tired. Of that she was sure. But it was a good thing that they stopped eventually. Brittany was so turned on from making out with Santana that she easily would have gone further but it wouldn't have been right. Not in the back of a truck and when it was the first time for both of them.
She had no idea what it all meant and if they were going to do that again or not. Judging from the way they both had a hard time stopping, she guessed that there was going to be a continuation.
But that was something to think about another day. She was in desperate need of some sleep.
