"Extreme Weather Conditions"
~ o ~ O ~ o ~
Darkness. That's all Percy saw. All around, just an endless nothingness; quiet, and cold.
Then, a burst of light and heat! Percy felt as if he was standing in front of a star coming to life, the heat was so intense. He could feel his blood boil, his skin and bones begin to melt. Fear and pain gripped the boy's heart. Then the heat subsided, becoming a comfortable warmth. The light remained blinding.
"My apologies," a soft voice whispered. "Do not be afraid, my brave successor."
Successor? Percy tried to look into the light. He could see a humanoid figure as his eyes tried to adjust, silhouetted in the corona. "Who's there?" the boy asked. "Where am I? Where's Annabeth?!"
"Your beloved is safe, for now," the voice responded. It sounded weird and distorted, and seemed to be having a hard time talking. "This may change soon, for all of us. I have failed my duties, and am not long for this life. I have hidden the weapon. It requires a new champion. You must take up my mantle, or all is lost."
"I don't understand," Percy said. "What are you asking of me?"
"To preserve the balance. To save lives. The enemy seeks destruction, for that is all it knows. It seeks the gem, and it is getting closer. Once it has the gem, nothing will stop it. All worlds will fall, as mine has."
Percy shook his head, or he thinks he does. He doesn't feel very physical at the moment. "I need to go back. My friends need me, we haven't finished our quest yet."
"This cannot wait!" The voice gave out a wet cough after its outburst. "I'm sorry, but this must be done. Now."
There was a sudden searing pain on Percy's chest, so intense that he could not even scream. He began to writhe and tense, limbs splaying slowly as if moving through some viscous liquid. It felt like a hot knife was carving something on his skin.
"The light needs a champion," the voice whispered. "I hope you will forgive me, some day."
The light and the pain grew stronger, until there was only white.

Happy Harbor (July 18, 11:16 EDT)
Percy shot awake with a gasp.
His eyes darted around the unfamiliar space, breathing quickening as he took in his surroundings. He began to calm down as he remembered the events of the night before. He had slept at the Waylands' apartment, on the couch in the living room. Sweat fell from his brow, as he tried to calm his heaving breaths. He placed a hand on his chest, pulling down the front of his shirt but saw no scars and felt no pain.
Percy sighed and started wiping the sweat off his face. He sat there for some time, catching his breath. He noticed a bundle of clothes and toiletries by his feet, along with a sticky note.
Bath's in the first door on the right. Leave your dirty clothes in the hamper, the note read, in curly handwriting he assumed was Mrs. Wayland's. Aenne, she insisted.
Percy smiled, before looking back at the state of his clothes. He hadn't had a chance to check it last night, after grabbing his stuff from the ship. He looked like he was run over, then tossed into a hurricane of dirt and broken glass. His jeans were ripped, though not in a fashionable way, and his shirt had several cuts and frayed edges. Red and black stains covered the fading Camp Half-Blood print. Blood and… ash marks?
He was not happy that he couldn't remember how he got wherever he was. It was like waking up at the Wolf House all over again. Thankfully he still had most of his memories, just not the part that was currently important.
Percy sighed, deciding to take a bath to clear his head. A few minutes later, he came out of the bathroom fresh and clean, in some new clothes that were a few inches too big for him. Aenne had given him her husband's clothes: a pair of dark slacks, and a blue, button-down shirt. A bit too formal for Percy's taste.
Before he could think more on it, he heard a door creak open and turned to look.
A young girl was staring at him, wide-eyed.
She was young, maybe seven or eight, with blonde hair and blue eyes, wearing blue pajamas with happy stars printed on it. She held a small, worn teddy bear, hugging it close. They stared at each other for a bit, until Percy raised a hand and waved. "Hi."
The girl turned around and ran down the hall into one of the other rooms, screaming bloody murder.

"I'm sorry about Melvin," Aenne said. They were sat in the kitchen, having a late breakfast. There was cottage cheese pancakes, and a breakfast casserole. Percy thought it tasted amazing, but wished it had been blue. "I overslept, and couldn't tell her we had a guest."
"It's fine," Percy reassured. He could see the girl, Melvin, was still staring at him across the table. She had placed the stuffed bear in front of her, like a shield. Next to her was a toddler around four-years-old, on a high chair. Her brother, Timmy, who had the same red hair as their mother. The little boy was being fed by Aenne, while trying to tell a story as he chewed on his food.
"Mom, you're not listening!" The young boy exclaimed, arms extended like a bird. His blue blanket flapping around as he moved. "I rode a dragon to a castle in the sky!"
"That's nice, Timmy," Aenne said, taking the blanket away before turning to Percy. "Were you able to call your folks?"
Percy shook his head and frowned. After the revelation that he might be in a different world, he had a hard time falling asleep. Aenne had to drag him to the couch and tuck him in, not sure why he seemed so shocked by the news on the TV. Percy had to lie and say his family lived near where the giant – the news started calling her Giganta – had been rampaging. He tried to call his mom's number, but all he got was disconnected message.
He felt a hand on his, seeing Aenne giving him a warm smile. "Don't worry, sonny. I'm sure they're fine. They might have just lost service in your block. There was a bit of damage to the telephone lines, I hear."
Percy smiled back. He didn't want to believe that he was in a different dimension. He held out hope that things had just changed in the mortal world while Juno had kept him asleep. He'd never really paid much attention to the news even before he woke up and was sent to New Rome, so it was possible. It was a stretch, but he had to hold out hope.
"Mama, are we still going to the park today?" Melvin asked quietly, trying not to get Percy's attention.
"Of course, dearie. Why don't you and Timmy go and get dressed. Put on your dungarees, you both look adorable in them. Your papa wants pictures!"
The little girl nodded with a grin, before grabbing her brother and carefully leading him back to their room. Aenne watched them fondly, then turned back to Percy. "So, what's your plan now?"
Percy shrugged, scratching the back of his head. "I'm not sure. I need to get back to New York, but I don't really have any money to travel. I guess I could walk. Wouldn't be the first time."
Aenne looked concerned at the last comment. "Well, that's not right. Hold on, I'll give you some cash."
"You don't have to do that," Percy said. She got up and made her way to the living room where her purse is, followed by Percy. "I can make do with what I have."
"Bollocks," she said as she rifled through her purse. "You saved my life, this is the least I could do."
"You've already let me stay for the night and fed me, you don't have to do more."
"I know," she said, turning back and placing a bunch of bills in the young man's hands. "But I want to, dear. You're a good kid, Percy, and I want to help you."
Percy looked down, his face feeling a bit warm at the praise. "Thanks."
Suddenly, the phone rang. Aenne answered it, while Percy sat back on the couch, looking at the money he was given. He'd have to check the cost of a Greyhound to New York, but it looked like enough to get him there and grab a meal as well. He wasn't sure what he'd do if no one was there, but he'd take things one step at a time.
Melvin and Timmy came back into the room, dressed for a day out. "We're ready!" Melvin said, while little Timmy repeated her words, clutching at his little blue blanket. They both wore bright blue overalls, over their white cotton shirts. Percy looked down at his own attire, already missing his own clothes, destroyed and tattered as they were. Thankfully, his shoes were still intact.
Aenne hung up the phone, turning back to look at her kids with a sad expression. "I'm sorry loves, we'll have to go to the park another time. You're mama has somewhere to be."
"But ma, you promised!" Melvin said, a sad frown on her face. Timmy already has a few tears on his face, lip trembling signaling the start of a tantrum.
Aenna kneeled down slowly, placing a hand on her children's shoulders. "I know, I'm sorry. I need to go to the police station to file a report. We can go to the park on another day."
Percy watched them, feeling a little bad seeing Melvin and Timmy look so disappointed. Timmy seemed to be at the edge of tears. Percy stared at the cash Aenne had just given him, and cleared his throat.
"I could take them," Percy said. "To the park, I mean."
The kids looked up at that, hopeful but a bit guarded, though that was mostly Melvin. Aenne turned to Percy, ready to protest when he held up the cash she had given him. "Let's call this my babysitting fee," he said with a grin.
Aenne bit her lip, turning to see the pleading expressions on her children's sweet faces. They had excellent pouty expressions, which Percy was very familiar with. He'd used it himself a lot of times, mostly successfully. Percy could see Aenne's willpower crumbling. Eventually, she gave a sigh and agreed.
Moments later, Percy and the Waylands stood outside on the sidewalk, with Aenne speaking with her children once more. Percy watched them quietly, pocketing a spare cellphone Aenne had provided him for emergencies.
"If anything happens," Aenne repeated once more. "Anything at all, you call me, alright?"
"Of course," Percy said, confidently. He reached down for Timmy and hoisted him up. He then held a hand out to Melvin, who grasped it hesitantly, her other hand still holding her teddy bear. "I'll make sure they're okay, and we'll have a fun time. What could go wrong?"
~ o ~ O ~ o ~
Everything went wrong almost immediately.
They reached the park, which was filled with families and couples enjoying the clear sky and fresh air. The breeze brought the smell of salt as it came in from the dockside neighborhood a few blocks away. Percy sat on a sandbox with Melvin and Timmy, as they built little sand castles while other kids ran around the playground. Timmy had also brought some toys to play with; dinosaurs, and superheroes. Percy recognized one of them from the TV. Superman.
It was still hard to accept that superheroes were real, and apparently aliens as well. He decided to put the thought away and focus on making sure the kids enjoyed their time at the park.
After a bit, the three of them moved to the swing set, where Timmy kept twisting the chains to spin around. The toddler's blue blanket twirled around like a flag in the wind. Melvin let Percy push her seat gently. "Someone was giving her a hard time," Percy said. "I helped her out, and since I had nowhere to sleep, she let me stay the night."
"Why couldn't you go home?" Melvin asked.
"Home is... kind of complicated," he admitted. "I got lost on the way, but I'm hoping to get back soon."
Melvin simply hummed in acknowledgement, while Percy continued to push idly as he watched the other folks in the park. He noticed a group of girls around his age hanging out and enjoying the weekend. A couple of them were watching him and giggling. Percy decided to ignore them, a little embarrassed and confused as he always was when girls paid attention to him. Suddenly, he realized that the wind was beginning to pick up .
He looked around and found where once there was a clear blue sky, dark clouds had gathered and were approaching fast. That's not normal, he thought to himself. A flash of his memory reminded him that he arrived during a storm as well. His brows furrowed in worry. This felt different though, almost artificial.
Percy stopped pushing the swing, making Melvin look up at him questioningly. "Is something wrong?"
"I think it's time for us to go," Percy said, as he picked up Timmy from his swing. The little boy looked unhappy at being pulled away from his seat and started throwing a tantrum in Percy's arms. Percy tried to soothe the toddler as he picked up the rest of their stuff. "Come on, Melvin."
"But we just got here!" Melvin said sadly. "Just ten more minutes?"
"I know, I'm sorry. The weather's turning bad though, and I don't like it. We need to –"
There was a crack of thunder, then some screaming as a bolt of lightning struck one of the trees in the park, splitting it in half. The girls that were watching Percy dragged their friends away as the tree started to fall over. Beyond them, Percy could see a a column of circling wind coming their way.
"Twister!" Percy called out in warning, grabbing Melvin's hand as he began to take them away. "Everyone evacuate. NOW!"
Immediately, the people in the park began to gather their friends and family as they scattered and made their way to safety. Percy decided to pick up Melvin as well, holding the children in both hands, so as not to lose them.
As they stepped out into the street, Percy saw lightning strike cars, buildings and lampposts. More twisters were forming and tearing several houses, moving towards the sea. That's definitely not normal, he thought once more. He could hear something nearby, like mini jet engines. He started looking around when a lightning bolt suddenly struck ten feet next to him, making Melvin and Timmy scream in fright.
Suddenly, the sound of jet engines grew stronger, and Percy felt the wind stir behind him. He turned around and saw a strange sight.
It was a man, at least, he thought it was a man. The figure looked to be wearing some sort of large, metal suit, painted red and black. Blue tubes attached to the back of its hands, connecting it to the back. For some reason, it also had a scarf around its neck.
"Well, now" the man said in a distorted voice. "Perhaps you will help me get Tornado's attention. Heroes do love saving the innocent."
"Baddie!" Timmy yelled angrily, eyes still filled with fear.
"I prefer revolutionary," the man responded, raising his hands as they began to spark with electricity. "Now, be good little hostages and scream."
Percy dodged to the side just as a bolt of energy tore the sidewalk he was standing on. He used his momentum to keep running through the streets, hoping to lose the Zeus-wannabe. Melvin and Timmy were still crying as they clung onto him tightly. Percy held them gently, but firmly. He would get them to safety. "Don't worry," he whispered to them. "I've got you."
They somehow found themselves on another part of the park, in front of a fountain in the center of a small roundabout. Gusts of wind blew by, strong enough to overturn several parked cars on the street outside the park. The hairs on the back of Percy's neck stood up, and he immediately dropped to the ground, shielding the children as another lightning bolt shot from behind them. The metal man had caught up to them, hovering idly. "What is it with the children in this town? Can't follow simple instructions."
Percy looked around, looking for somewhere to hide the kids so he could deal with the tin man. He spotted a small copse of trees that could provide cover. Percy knelt down and carefully let the kids down. They immediately tightened their grip around him, eyes wide in fear. "What are you doing?" Melvin asked, voice barely a whisper.
"Once he's distracted, run into the trees and hide," Percy whispered to them, passing the phone Aenne gave him to Melvin. "Call for help. I'll find you, I promise."
Melvin stared into his eyes for a moment, before nodding and letting him go. She grabbed her brother, who was still crying and shaking. Percy stood up and placed himself in front of them, as he looked up at the villain in the sky.
"We were told not to talk or listen to strangers," Percy responded as he slowly inched towards the fountain. "Who are you supposed to be, anyway? The Weather Man?"
"My apologies, you may call me Mister Twister," the metal man gave a small bow. "Now, I'm getting a bit annoyed with how long Red Tornado is taking, so if you could help me out by screaming, I promise not to hurt you too much."
So, he's looking for someone, Percy thought. Who's Red Tornado? "Tempting offer, Lightning McQueen," he called out. "Here's my counteroffer!"
Percy felt a tug in his gut as he called on his powers. The water in the fountain rose up and launched towards Mister Twister, grabbing and slamming him down onto the ground. It solidified into ice, trapping the villain for but a moment. Percy turned back to look at the kids, and yelled, "Go!"
Melvin picked up Timmy and ran toward the trees. Percy turned back to his adversary, just in time to see the ice shatter, and for Twister to stand up and dust himself off. "Honestly," Twister said, exasperated. "How many of you child heroes live in this town? I might have to investigate later when I'm done with you."
Twister immediately launched himself towards Percy, summoning a small twister in his hand, ready to send it towards the young man. Percy slid his hand into his pocket, pulling out a pen and uncapping it. Immediately, his trusty sword Riptide appeared in his hands, familiar and comforting. Something was off about it though; it looked different. Longer, with a strange metallic sheen mixed with the bronze.
Before he could inspect it closer, Twister was in front of him. Percy instantly summoned his own hurricane winds, dispelling Twister's. The expression on his helmet did not change, but Percy knew he was surprised. Percy grinned and started swinging his sword.
The two of them danced around each other, while also fighting for control of the winds. Percy used the eater from the fountain to distract and disarm Twister , while his sword left scratches and gouges in the metal suit He wasn't certain if Riptide would pass through his enemy, as it always did with mortals, but it was good for him that it didn't. This may have been a sign that Twister was more than just a mortal or something had changed with the sword, but Percy didn't have time to think about it.
He continued to push Mister Twister back, countering his wind and blocking his lightning with thick walls of water, which vaporized the liquid. The fountain was running out of water, and Percy was growing tired, having not fully recovered since the ship, but he kept up his assault. Just as he was getting the upper hand, Twister suddenly called out, "Enough!"
Suddenly, Percy was blasted back by a ball of lightning, shocking and stunning him as he dropped onto the street. He was winded and expended, laying down for several seconds as he caught his breath. He scrambled shakily back to his feet, which seemed to surprise Twister.
"That shock was enough to kill a full-grown elephant," he exclaimed. "What are you?!"
"I've had worse lightning strikes from my cousin," Percy said with a tired grin.
"Get him, Percy!" a voice called out. "Get that baddie!"
Percy turned in horror as he saw Timmy cheering him on, while Melvin tried to pull him back behind the trees. Mister Twister also turned to them, letting out a sigh as he raised his hand towards them. "I'm starting to dislike children."
"NO!" Percy called out, hand outstretched uselessly as he watched Twister charge another shot of lightning. He was out of water to block the bolt, and he wouldn't reach them in time to shield them.
They would die.
A soft glow came from his outstretched palm, warm and burning.
Then, there was a high-pitched whine and the sound of crackling static as a lance of pure golden light burst from his hand, launching toward Twister like a missile. It slammed into the villain and blasted him into the shoreline, about a mile away from the park. The street was torn apart as Twister was thrown back. Percy felt a lance of lethargy strike through him, dropping to his knees. His palm was steaming, and it felt raw. He stared out at the direction Twister was blasted towards, then at his palm where the glow was dimming.
"Well… that's new."
"Percy!" Melvin and Timmy ran towards him, grabbing his arms and trying to oull him up. "We got to go, before it comes back!"
Percy stood up weakly as his legs shook below him. Already he could see the small speck that was Mister Twister, standing up from the rubble of the damaged car he had landed on. Then, Percy looked above him as the sound of something flying towards them reached his ears. He turned back, seeing another figure in red metal armor and cape was speeding towards Mister Twister. Percy tensed up, clutching Melvin and Timmy close, expecting the new person to be another villain. It looked too similar to Twister.
"Red Tornado!" Timmy said as he also saw the red-armored man. "The good guys are here! Yeah!"
So, that's Tornado, Percy thought. About time. He held the kids' hands, as he was too tired to carry them. They started walking away from the area. "Great. I guess we should leave lightning rod to him. Let's go find your mom."
"Aww, but I want to watch him beat the baddie, like you did!" It seemed Timmy had already forgotten his fear after witnessing Percy defeat the villain and the arrival of a superhero.
Percy winced as he turned to the kids. "Yeah, maybe let's not tell Aenne I fought a supervillain while you were around, okay?"
Melvin looked at him with wide eyes, still in a bit of shock at the events of the day. Slowly, her lips turned up into a soft smile and nodded at Percy. "Your secret's safe with us."
