Chapter 21: Exams to Survive

At night on top of the tallest building in Bonesborough was Puck. He stood at the edge of the roof and looked down at the ground below, sighing. He then took one step off the edge and began to fall. He fell, fell, free falling…

THUD

The impact was hard, but Puck unsurprisingly survived. He looked indifferent as he felt getting helped up by his shadow, who was not pleased by Puck's actions.

"Hey, what the hell are you trying to do?" the shadow demanded to know with a voice that only Puck could hear, since the shadow lacked a mouth.

"I was trying to fly," Puck admitted.

"Well you can't fly," the shadow pointed out.

"I could once!" Puck argued. "I remembered being able to fly. I just don't remember how to."

"Ah, of course. Have you been having any new memory problems lately, by the way?"

Puck had a thousand yard stare as he responded. "You know how it is. The farther I look into my past, the harder it is to still remember the specifics." He blinked twice. "I… still remember the faces of friends and the feelings they gave me, but I don't remember the names that belong to those faces and anything else is vague. I also remember my home and the feeling of being cast out, but not why I was cast out in the first place."

"Will Amity and Luz one day suffer the same fate? Just faces that you can barely recall?" Puck didn't answer his own shadow, but his face looked unsure. "We both know where this road leads down. It always ends the same way, why should this be any different? Why do you keep doing the same thing, knowing you will be hurt over and over again? Is it because you want to feel a little more human?" Puck avoided the gaze of his shadow, confirming its suspicions. "You're not human, you're a Fae. It'd be best for you to stop trying to be something you're not. Friendship… is not for the Fae. Love… is not for the Fae. It makes you weak."

Puck lowered his head, listening to his shadow go on until he heard someone else calling his name.

"Puck?" asked Anu Bist, who was now in front of the young-looking Fae. "Am I interrupting something?"

"...It's nothing," Puck responded, not bothering to look up at the half-genie jackal.

"Well, what are you doing jumping off buildings in the middle of the night?" Anu Bist asked while crossing his arms.

"Maybe I was trying to get your attention, Anu Bist," Puck told him. "Otherwise you would just ignore me. Honestly, I'm surprised you even know my name."

"Oh, I know who you are and I know of your exploits. I've also noticed how active you've been lately. And soon others will too. You should be laying low, you know that the Fae aren't even supposed to be in the Boiling Isles. If the Emperor's Coven learns that-"

Puck chuckled. "Laying low isn't my style, Anu. So what if the Emperor's Coven finds out about me? I'm not scared of them."

"It doesn't matter if you're not scared of them. You are being reckless. And sooner or later, that will have consequences. You're not in the human realm anymore. The witches of the Boiling Isles know of our kind… and our weaknesses."

"Man, you really are a teacher now. You sound just like one. I have to say, I'm not a fan."

"And this is the reason I haven't spoken to you before now. Because you are nothing but an irresponsible child."

"Wow, how original. Never heard that one before."

"Well, then I have nothing else to say to you." Anu held up a zipper and unzipped the air creating a portal. He stepped in, the portal closing behind him as he left Puck behind.

All Puck could do was stare at where Anu Bist was only moments before he scoffed and turned away. "Whatever," he muttered. "He's just like all the rest…"

The next morning, Luz Clawthorne got ready for this incredibly important day by putting on her Hexside uniform and picking up her bat while ignoring the recurring itch she felt on her knee. She then went down to the kitchen where Eda had made her a plate of pixie-filled bagels and a devil eggs omelet.

"Ready for the exams, kiddo?" Eda asked.

"Yeah, after cramming, studying, and the training, I think I'm ready," Luz confirmed while eating her breakfast. "Just gotta be at the Covention where the test is taking place."

"Make sense since the Witch Duel's part of the exams is taking place in it," King mentioned while eating his.

"Too bad you can't come and watch, mom," Luz told Eda. "Since members of the Emperor's Coven will be there as test proctors."

"That's fine, I don't need to watch to know that you got this," Eda replied, watching her daughter eating while thinking about what Track she might end up in. Though she knew that Luz aspired to be a strong witch like her, Eda still wanted to be her own witch instead of just like her mom. "Hey, honey."

"Yeah, mom?" Luz replied while chewing.

"...You've been working so hard at Hexside lately and I couldn't be prouder of you. So, well… whatever Track you choose, I promise to be behind you one hundred percent."

"I already told you that my plan is to take multiple tracks so I can be a badass witch of both worlds," Luz reminded.

"Yeah, and I believe that you can do anything you set your mind to," Eda said. "Because nobody can stop a Clawthorne. But it's up to you. I just want to let you know that whatever you decide, no matter what, I'm always behind you."

Luz looked at her mom in confusion as she finished up her breakfast. "Alright, I'll be seeing you all later, once I pass this test!" She stood up. "Bye, mom!"

"Bye, honey!" Eda waved with a smile as she watched her daughter go out the door. Though despite her smile, an uneasy feeling was rising in her stomach.

"Well, I hope you all are ready for the exams," Anu Bist told his detention track students while walking with them to the stadium. "Especially after you all took care of the ghosts in the Abomination Track once and for all."

"Yeah, that was pretty scary when those ghosts formed into their final forms," Viney commented.

"We came, we saw, and we really need a lot of therapy after that," Jerbo agreed.

"Arf(It's times like this that I'm glad that I'm color blind)!" Barcus mentioned.

"Plus, after all of that, I think I've finally mastered a new spell to show off," Luz said before pausing for a moment to scratch her shin.

"You alright, Luz?" Viney asked.

"Yeah, just itchy," Luz answered as she stood back up. "For some reason, I've been kinda itchy since I came back from my trip to the human world over the weekend. I think I may have been bitten by one of those blood sucking bugs there."

"That doesn't sound good." Jerbo said.

"You probably just have a nervous itch, which is common around exam time," Viney suggested while handing Luz some ointment. "This healing ointment is from when I was working at the petting zoo last year in the fall. Those griffin kits coughed up a lot of spiders that season."

"Thanks, Vines." Luz said while wiping the cream on her knee.

Passing by them was a certain group, the posse that Amity was often seen with. But now it was just Boscha, Skara, Amelia and Cat. Skara looked nervous while Amelia and Cat chatted about their exams preps. Boscha, meanwhile, paid little attention to the rest of her group as she looked back at Luz and her friends.

"A human in your class?" Boscha asked Cat earlier that semester, listening to her claim while Amity was next to them having her abomination take her things out of her locker.

"Y-Yeah, there's this human girl in my class now," Cat explained with an unsure tone. "Like, she had those round ears over her wild and spiky hair. That hair really needs to get braided down… you think she'd hang out with us? I just want to fix her hair so much…"

"Is that the human over there?" Boscha noticed, pointing to Luz who was meeting up with Willow down the hallway. "Looks like she's already hanging out with half-a-witch over there. So her social life is over before it could even begin."

Amity turned toward the human girl hanging with Willow and her eyes widened. When Luz looked in her direction, she quickly turned to avoid being noticed. "We should get going. Don't you have a hex casting class?"

"Yeah, the more I look the less I care anyway," Boscha stated as she walked off. "Come on, Cat. It's your turn to cover for me when I pass notes."

"Alright but if I get detention, Skara's gonna cover me for the rest of the week as your henchwitch. Not permanently of course, cause I have big plans for the three of us," Cat said in a naïve sense.

"Yeah, we're gonna have to talk about that later," Boscha informed her.

Boscha looked away from Luz and her friends when she heard Skara talking to her.

"Hey Boscha," Skara said. "Um… did you um… ever get challenged by someone who was a friend of yours in the witch's duel-"

"Oh yeah, I heard Bo challenged you," Boscha interrupted. "Just remember that I don't tolerate failure." And with that, she began to walk away from her posse.

Skara looked down with a nervous whimper, while Amelia and Cat shared an uneasy look.

Meanwhile, Luz was looking at the other students who were waiting around and mingling. She spotted Amity with her siblings and smiled. "Hey, Amity!" Luz waved at her. When Amity noticed Luz, she nervously waved back before turning around to hide her blushing face. Luz walked up to her. "Bet you're ready for the exams. Thanks for all your help, I think it will really pay off."

"Yeah, I think it will," Amity replied awkwardly, trying not to look Luz in the eyes. "Um, good luck!" She quickly darted away to catch up to her siblings.

"You too!" Luz called out, slightly confused by Amity's behavior.

"Hey Luz!" Gus popped up, but Luz wasn't startled this time. "Are you excited for the exams?"

"Yeah, G-Man," Luz replied, noticing Amity glancing back at her one before focusing on her siblings. Luz sighed and shook her head, deciding not to worry about it. 'So what if Amity is acting a little weird? Little Miss Perfect is probably just nervous about the exams and I can't blame her. We can talk later, after I ace this.'

In the stadium, the students of Hexside had been seated with their Tracks. Willow sat with the Plant Track with Amelia, Gus was seated among the Illusionists along with Amity who sat beside Edric and Emira, Boscha was with Potions, Skara with Bard, Bo and Cat with Healing, and Luz, Viney, Jerbo and Barcus were seated between Construction and Beast Keeping.

Principal Bump stood on a podium with a flying microphone. "Attention all students, thank you all for being here. After all your hard work, the time has come for you each to show just how much you've learned this semester. And joining me today, chosen from the Emperor's Coven to be an exam proctor, is Craig!"

The masked Craig walked up to the microphone and cleared his throat. "Hello, Hexsidians, my name is Craig, and I'll be your proctor along with many others. Now you may know me from my comedy tours, but that's not the test here." No one laughed. "So anyway, the reason that the Emperor's Coven has sent exam proctors is so we can keep an eye on those that plan to cheat. While I understand that you may be tempted to because of the pressure and stress, cheating will still not be tolerated in any shape or form. Each Track will be assigned a testing hall, and afterward you'll be given a lunch break. And then, you'll duel!" He noticed a certain Track missing. "Huh, looks like there's less Abomination Track students this year."

"Calm yourself, like a bonsai tree," Willow said to herself, while walking to her testing hall with the other Plant Track students. She turned to Batroc and Amelia. "Are you two feeling alright?"

"Yeah, I think I'm gonna conquer this test!" Batroc said in excitement.

"Yeah, I can't wait," Amelia answered, though she didn't look confident.

"You alright, Amelia?" Willow asked while Batroc walked ahead.

"Just nervous," Amelia said, before breathing a deep breath. "I want to be honest with you, Willow. Before you came to the Plant Track, I was at the top of my class. Just like Amity or Cat in the Abomination and Healing Tracks. But I still struggled and then you came. Everything just came more naturally to you than it ever did for me. Which is seriously impressive, don't get me wrong. But I also envy you and once it becomes clear just how better you are than me, I won't be able to hang out with Boscha's group anymore. Because I won't be at the top of my class anymore and Boscha wouldn't like that…"

"Why do you care about what Boscha thinks?" Willow asked.

"Well… I just… well, you know how it is." Amelia couldn't find the words, but Willow still patted her on the shoulder.

"Look Amelia, just because you're not the best doesn't mean that you're not talented," Willow reassured. "You've worked just as hard and just as much as anyone else in the Track. That's worth more than being the top of anything. Because honestly, I don't care if I am at the top of my class. I still want others to succeed and to feel good about succeeding, because they deserve it. You're a smart girl, Amelia, you'll ace this test. And that's something to be proud of."

Amelia smiled, grateful for the encouragement. "Thanks, Willow," she said as they both entered their assigned testing hall, the door shutting behind them.

In another room Principal Bump and the other teachers and coven proctors were overseeing the different Tracks through their crystal balls, making sure that none of the students were attempting to cheat.

"Uh-oh, we got a cheater," said one proctor as he focused on a bowcut boy from Construction holding an answer sheet underneath his desk. "Howard Moesly, looks like you're going to be banished to the shadow realm." He pressed a button.

In the Construction Track testing hall, Howard didn't notice a black portal appear underneath him until he was suddenly completely sucked in. "Wait, wait, no!" he cried as he fell into the dark abyss. "Remember meeeeeeeeee!"

"At least the shadow realm has good counseling," Craig mentioned to Bump, who was sipping coffee. They watched as another student who tried to cheat was sent to the shadow realm, and then another. Another one got sent through a more fiery portal. "Whoops, accidentally sent that one to an actual Hell."

"It's going to take a lot of paperwork to get him back," Bump grumbled as he continued to drink his coffee.

"Indeed," agreed a female voice.

Bump almost choked on his coffee when he heard the voice, turning around to see Lilith Clawthorne with her hood pulled up. "L-Lilith, what brings you here?" he asked as Lilith took a seat. Steve, who was accompanying Lilith, sat down beside her.

"Oh, other than trying to capture my sister and investigating the muggings, I'm here because I wanted to check how well my finest protegee is doing in her exams," Lilith explained, glazing at the crystal ball that showed Amity in the Illusion Track testing room.

"I thought you also wanted to check on your niece?" Steve asked, causing Lilith to glare at him as he realized that he had said too much.

"Niece? You mean the Owl Lady's daughter?" Craig asked, pointing to the crystal ball showing the Detention Track taking their exams. "I wouldn't be surprised if she tried to cheat."

"I wouldn't accuse my student of anything she hasn't done yet, Craig," Anu Bist sneered while coming in with his own cup of coffee.

"And you're supposed to be the teacher of those rejects?" Craig asked.

"Yes, and I do not appreciate you talking that way about my students," Anu Bist said, baring his fangs at Craig.

"Enough," Lilith said, getting in between them while looking at the proctor in charge of watching the Detention Track. "Have any of them tried to cheat so far?"

"Uh… no, ma'am," the proctor answered.

Lilith watched as her niece struggled with the test, wondering how well she would do but also knowing that the greatest challenge of the exams had yet to come…

After the written and multiple choice test was completed, the Detention Track quartet came out of their testing hall.

"Glad that's over with," Luz said, sounding tired.

"Yeah, now we just have to worry about showing off our spells in the dueling section of the exams," Jerbo reminded.

"Hmm(Let's hope they're impressed by our mixing magic skills)," Barcus whimpered.

"Yeah, especially after what Anu Bist and Bump said when we finished taking care of the ghosts in the Abominations homeroom," Viney agreed, remembering the deal they had with Bump.

Principal Bump had the Detention Track students in his office, standing in front of his desk with Anu Bist also present. "I've spoken to Anu Bist, and for the exams I've agreed to see how you four do with your… mixing magic thing."

"What are you talking about, P.B.?" Luz asked.

"I'm saying that if I'm impressed by your mix-magic methods, then by next semester I'll be opening new Track opportunities. You see, ever since the incident in the Abomination Track, I've had to send many students to other Tracks until that classroom was ghost-free. However, I later realized that most of the students excelled more in those other Tracks. Willow Park, for example, is doing better in the Plant Track than she ever did in Abominations. The exception is, of course, Amity Blight. She is doing fine enough since we temporarily placed her in the Illusion Track with her siblings, but she still excels in Abominations. My point is that I realized having students only in one Track could actually hurt their education and prevent them from becoming the best witch they could be, especially since some are put into a specific Track for the opportunities it could offer rather than it's something that they're good at. And they may never learn what they are good at if they don't get the opportunity to branch out and try different things. So I've been thinking that if you can show me how well you do with mixing Track magic, I will allow you to partake in Multi-Track classes. If you impress the judges, of course."

"I'm sure they'll knock their socks off," Anu Bist replied. "My students are like caterpillars ready to bloom like butterflies. As long as they don't get eaten first."

Luz gave a determined nod, but was then struck by a realization. "Guess this might be the end of the troublemakers if we succeed, huh?"

"What? Nah, we'll still hang out," Viney said..

"Yeah, once trouble makers always trouble makers," Jerbo declared. "Like, once detention trackers, now multi-trackers!" Barcus nodded in agreement.

Luz smiled. "Come on, let's go have lunch."

Amity received her meal and went to eat with her brother and sister. She didn't see a point in sitting with her other friends. Boscha seemed more distant today, and Skara just sat alone looking depressed. Amelia and Cat were somewhere by their own. As she turned, she almost ran into Willow who had also received her food.

"W-Willow," Amity said in surprise.

"Oh um… hey, Amity," Willow replied, looking down on her food. "I hope you did well on your test."

"Yeah, you too," Amity replied awkwardly, both not looking at each other. "How are… you doing?"

"Pretty good." Willow answered. An awkward pause followed. "I'm supposed to be prepared for my battle so I gotta eat to fuel up. You?"

Amity looked down at her food. "I don't know who I'm up against, really." She sighed and looked up to Willow. "Willow I…" She wanted to say something, but was unable to do so. She looked back down in shame as she started to walk past. "Good luck."

Willow watched Amity walk away, confused. She then noticed Gus waving at her and she went over to sit with him, though she still couldn't help but wonder what was up with Amity.

Meanwhile, Bo was eating her lunch with Mattholomule next to her just slumped onto the table. "I am so not looking forward to this," he muttered.

"You should eat up, Mattholomule," Bo advised.

He looked up at his club mate. "I heard from the grapevine that you challenged Skara, aren't you two like friends?" he asked.

"Oh, you weren't there when it happened," Bo replied. "Skara ended our friendship over a text. When she later tried to apologize for it, I wanted to show her just how much she hurt me. To give her a taste of the pain that she inflicted upon me."

Mattholomule stared at the Healing Track student, surprised. "Okay… dark. Though I do see where you're coming from. Who needs friends, right? All they do is play around with your feelings and make you do whatever they want, then they hurt you when you don't do what they want or they run out of other uses for you." He looked at his reflection in his drink, sighing. "That's how it was at my old school, at least. I thought Hexside would be different… but I guess not."

"I have noticed that you haven't been showing up at H.A.S. meetings lately," Bo brought up.

"I didn't see the point," Mattholomule said. "It's not like I'm missed and I'm not even that interested in humans anyway, I only joined in the first place because I wanted to-" He stopped himself and changed the subject. "At least Hexside is still safer than my old school."

Bo couldn't help but look concerned for Mattholomule. "Was your old school that bad?"

Mattholomule forced a chuckle. "My mom had to pull me out of there after I came home with a busted lip and broken arm." He turned to look at Bo. "You think Boscha is bad? I knew someone back in Glandus who was just like her, except even worse."

Boscha meanwhile was just sitting alone by herself, isolated from everyone else. She glanced at Luz sitting with her detention mates, chatting and enjoying themselves. Her fist tightened.

Earlier that semester in the girl's restroom, Boscha was washing her hands as the door opened and Luz came in. Boscha noticed the human girl and that she was staring at her "What are you looking at, human?"

"Oh, nothing much," Luz replied, now wearing her gray Detention Track uniform after having recently destroyed Detention. "Just wanted to get to know about the captain of the Grudgby team and Amity's lapdog."

Boscha was a little put off by that comment. "Hey, I'm nobody's lapdog. I'm one of the top elite witches around here, so if you think you can try to intimidate me, go back to hanging out with the half-a-witch or whatever." She looked away from Luz to focus on putting on her blood lip balm, until she felt the human's arm pressed to her neck and she gasped. Then a bat hit the wall next to her face. Boscha was too shocked to respond and she could only look at Luz's smiling face.

"Her name is Willow Parks, bitch," Luz hissed at the shocked girl. "I heard how much of a hard time you've given her. She told me how you always pick on her, make fun of her… and because of what? Because she doesn't represent your pathetic ideal of being a strong witch… you're a %*&^." She released Boscha, letting the other girl hold her own neck while catching her breath as she fell on her knees. "This is just a warning, stay away from Willow. She's had enough problems with witches like you putting her down. As long as I'm around, Willow and Gus are under my protection from pathetic losers like you."

Boscha looked up at Luz, wheezing for air. "I-I-I didn't do anything to you…"

"I know, and I know for a fact that some of you witches don't take kindly to humans," Luz said with a smirk. "I don't care what you think of me, three-eyes. I don't care if I'm a human who doesn't have magic naturally. I was raised by the infamous Owl Lady, the strongest witch of the Boiling Isles. Stronger than you and your parents. You can pick on me however you like, but if I hear that you've been picking on my friends… I'll become your worst nightmare."

"Y-You…" Boscha tried to say something, but was unable to finish her sentence as Luz glared down at her..

Luz scoffed. "That's what I thought." She walked out of the bathroom, leaving Boscha alone.

Boscha came out from the bathroom a few minutes later, recovered but barely able to stand. Amity noticed her as Boscha walked up. "What happened to you?" Amity asked.

"I don't want to talk about it!" Boscha snapped, heading toward the school's exit. "I'm skipping out, tell my Track teachers I left for home early." She walked away, not waiting for Amity to give her response.

As Boscha remembered that incident and many others like it, she formulated a plan to take down Luz Clawthorne. Back then, she could've told on Luz. But Boscha had her own principles. She was no snitch, but she was petty. Revenge was a family thing, if someone shot you, you shoot them back. That's what her parents taught her. As of now, Luz Clawthorne was fighting for her position as Apex. So it was about time to show the human why she has no place in Hexside.

Meanwhile, at the Detention Track table, something was troubling Luz as she looked at her food. This did not go unnoticed by her detention mates. "What's up, Luz?" Jerbo asked.

"It's nothing… except," Luz said as she lowered her head. "I'm worried that I did something wrong to Amity."

"Oh boy…" Viney said. "What happened?"

"Just something that happened this morning when I went up to talk to her," Luz explained. "She barely stuck around and bailed as soon as she could. I want to think that it was nothing, that she was just stressed because of the exams… but what if I did something wrong? What if I crossed some line when I gave her that book or she wants nothing else to do with me now that she'll no longer have to tutor me after this?"

"I'm sure it isn't that bad," Viney stated.

"Yeah, you probably just caught her at a bad time," Jerbo assured, though Viney had an idea.

Amity looked at Luz from her table when she didn't think that her crush was looking, then turned back to her lunch with a sigh. "Come on, Mittens, cheer up," Emira attempted to comfort. "You don't really have to do what mom said. Go talk to her."

Amity was tinting with blush as she replied. "I-I don't know, I don't want to get distracted. I should… focus on who my opponent is. Like, could they be from Beast Keeping or Construction?" She ran her hands through her hair. "I just hope that I'm not challenged by one of Luz's friends or she'll never forgive me…" She noticed her siblings smirking. "You both heard nothing."

"Oh we won't tell," Edric said mischievously, but Amity wasn't convinced.

"If you do, I can guarantee you that Puck will find out," Amity told them, causing the two to exchange fearful glances. "Yeah, that's what I thought."

"Barcus, Viney, stop it!"

Amity heard Luz's voice as she turned to see Viney pushing Luz while Barcus pulled on her sleeve, directing her toward the Blight's table. "Hey, don't mind us. Luz just wanted to talk to Amity about how she did on her test," Viney explained as Barcus let go of Luz's sleeve.

"Hey, Amity…" Luz waved while turning to glare at Viney and Barcus. "Sorry, my friends can be quite assholes." She looked back at Amity.. "Um… how was your test?"

"Great," Amity simply replied, not looking at Luz as she hid her own blushing face. "You?"

"Um… good, I think," Luz answered. "I struggled a bit, but I think I did well enough to pass."

"Attention, those that have survived the first part of their exams should now report to the stadium grounds. This is your five minute warning."

"Well, better get going," Amity said as she stood up.

"Yeah, right," Luz nodded and the two joined the crowd of students now heading for the stadium.

"Gee, that could've gone better, right?" Viney asked Emira, who blushed when spoken to.

"Y-Yeah," Emira replied nervously, turning away from Viney before walking away with Edric following her. Viney didn't seem to notice Emira's blushing or nervousness around her.

"Smooth move, sis," Edric commented.

"Shut up, Ed," Emira hushed with a glare.

The students were met in the stadium by Craig, who held up a microphone.

"Alright, plain and simple about the rules of the witch's duel portion of the exams. This won't be a tournament-style contest or anything, we don't have the time and healthcare for that."

"Oh, come on!" shouted a random student.

"So, the way we're gonna handle this is simple. The judges will determine what kind of unique spell you have on your own based on your own style and ways of things. That can give you some grade points. Now, we used to have a thirty minute limit, but we've decreased to about twenty-four minutes. So all you need to do is to last about ten minutes or more to pass, for the losers at least. The winners that beat their assigned or challenged opponents automatically get a pass. If the loser doesn't last ten minutes, well… you'll see."

Popping up in front of each student was a colored ball. They each grabbed it, wondering what the ball meant. Luz herself got a yellow ball with the letter C on it.

"The color of your ball represents the coven track opponent you'll be facing. Also you'll be fighting in ten different colosseum rooms for your duels. The letters on the ball represent your assigned room. Some of you were already challenged prior to the exams, while others have been randomly assigned an opponent. When you're finished you can stick around to watch the other matches or just go straight home to your families. You won't know your final grade right away."

And with that, the doors to Rooms A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, and K opened. Luz looked for the room she was assigned to and followed the students heading for Room C.

Amity headed for Room A, Gus headed for Room D, and Willow headed for Room E.

Luz found herself in line with other students waiting for their match. "Guess I'll wait," she said to herself, noticing a spider crawling on the nearby wall. When she grabbed and ate it, the student behind her looked shocked. Luz looked at him, still chewing. "What? Gotta have protein."

'Maybe I shouldn't have eaten lunch,' the student thought while looking greener than his reptilian skin.

Ten minutes had passed before it was time for Willow's match. As she waited to see her opponent, she heard the voice of an announcer.

"Willow Park of the Plant Track will be challenged by the top student of the Construction Track, Simon Saltstar!"

Willow heard footsteps, heavy footsteps. She saw some pebbles on the ground vibrating as her opponent stepped up. To her shock, he was about six feet taller than her, with black spiky hair, brown eyes, and tanned skin with a x-mark scar on his left cheek. He had a hardened look and was wearing the Hexside uniform, but was built like a large tank, very muscular.

"You must be Willow Parks of the Plant Track," Simon said in a deep, manly voice. "I am Simon Saltstar, age fourteen, top student of the Construction Track!"

"Wait, you're fourteen?!" Willow asked in shock. "Why do you look and sound like you're in your twenties?!"

"Witch puberty, and I don't need power glyphs to work out on a daily basis," Simon answered.

"You work out? I do too," Willow replied.

"Really? Huh, that's a shock. No offense, but I thought Plant Trackers were just tree-huggers." Simon got into a fighting position. "But let's see what you got!"

In Room D, Gus entered the ring, realizing that his opponent was the top student of the Healing Track: Cat Harwitch.

"Alright, prepare to be amazed by Gus Porter's illusions!" Gus struck a pose, which made Cat smirk.

"Aw, ain't you adorable little guy," Cat replied, as her fingers started glowing. "Too bad I'm gonna have to steal your points." She charged at Gus, who dodged her quickly but was unable to stop her finger from touching his shoulder, causing his shoulder and left arm to go numb.

"My arm!" Gus cried out, Cat smirking at him while she summoned illusion clones of himself with his remaining arm.

"I'm not just an extra," Cat told him. "Despite what some people think. What I've just done is block your nerve points. Don't worry, you will recover… but not until after I win!"

Amity's match started as she entered the ring. To her surprise, her opponent at the other side of the ring was just a short girl with blue curly top hair, wearing an Oracle Track uniform and holding a raggedy doll.

"Golly gee, you must be Amity Blight," the girl greeted. "My name is Dolly Tempus, I'm in the Oracle classes, and I have big dreams!"

Amity blinked, she couldn't help but feel a bit put off by this. "Um… what are your dreams?"

"Graduating Hexside, working at the Emperor's Coven, usurping the Coven system and then working in the Underworld!" Dolly explained as she closed her eyes, then opened them again to show that they were glowing purple. "Oh, and watching Little Miss Perfect squirm!" She held up her doll and listened to him. "What's that, Jojo? You wanna show her the true meaning of fear?" She made the doll nod and Dolly smirked while aiming the doll at Amity to spread a purple mist around her.

"Abomination, rise!" Amity quickly summoned her Abomination. The Abomination went to grapple Dolly who stepped out of the way, still targeting Amity.

"What's wrong, Little Miss Perfect?" Dolly asked with her now crazy eyes. "After all, this duel's just begun!"

Luz crossed her arms as she waited. She groaned when she saw how slowly the line was moving along. "Can't this line go any faster?"

Willow slid back, avoiding the stone pillars that came out of the ground after Simon stomped. Her eyes glowed green as she brought out large vines to go straight towards her opponent. Simon dodged them.

"So it looks like you're not the half-a-witch everyone said you were," Simon commented. "That's good, because I prefer a strong opponent!" He smashed his fist on the ground and a boulder sprang up that he repeatedly punched into smaller boulders, each targeting Willow.

Willow summoned a large mushroom to shield herself from the many boulders being punched at her.. She struggled to keep it up, but waved her other hand to grow more vines that formed a large man-eating flower with four eyes on each pedal. She launched the flower at Simon, but he jumped up with his fist out and punched straight through the flower from the mouth to the other side. The flower fell and Simon landed behind Willow.

"Not bad," Simon said while he turned to Willow. "But let me show you something I came up with just for this exam." He drew a circle and the air and punched through it, causing him to be encased in stony armor. He covered himself in brown, knight-like armor with a rhino-shaped helmet with a horn on top and vertical visors on the plate of his helmet. His armor was brown with white metal chest armor, bulky brown shoulder pads with spikes, having boulder gauntlets, grieves and on his back two small pillars stuck out. "Behold, my Construction Armor! With it you've more than met your match, vegan!"

Willow's left eye twitched.

Cat tried to find Gus, who was hiding among his illusions.

"Come on, just make it easier for himself!" Cat demanded while kicking a Gus illusion away from her. "You Illusionists can't keep up forever. Once my pressure point magic hits you, your muscles will fall asleep! So let's make this battle quick!" Cat drew two spell circles, which shot out a blizzard of snow that caused the Gus clones to disappear. Only one remained in the snow. "Hehe, there you are."

Gus, trapped in the snow, began to panic as Cat began to make her way over to him. However, the snow made it more difficult than she expected.

"Hehehe, you can't hide from your fears," Dolly said as she spread her mist throughout the ring. "Only five minutes have passed, and once I make you submit, I'll be known as the one who took down a Blight!"

Amity was trying to use a fire spell to disperse the mist around, as she strategized. 'This Dolly prefers long distance attacks,' she thought, before noticing that the fear mist surrounding her was caused by Dolly's raggedy doll. "Abomination, rise!" Amity summoned her Abomination again and it charged towards Dolly.

The Oracle Track student dodged the Abomination once, then raised her doll to fire more mist at Amity now that she was exposed. This time Amity couldn't disperse the mist in time and it covered her, much to Dolly's glee. "Now, to make you submit!" she declared.

"You should've kept your back protected," said a voice behind her.

Dolly's eyes widened, but before she could turn around her doll was taken from her and thrown away. The mist disappeared and Dolly found herself defenseless against Amity, who she now realized had used an illusion spell on herself and her Abomination. When Dolly had dodged what she thought was an Abomination, it was actually Amity while the Amity that Dolly thought she had sprayed was actually the Abomination. "W-Wait… you used an illusion and an abomination spell!?" Dolly asked in shock.

"Yup," Amity replied, before summoning an Abomination hand that knocked Dolly out.

Five Minutes Passed.

Amity Blight Wins, Dolly Tempus… to the Shadow Realm for Test Make-Up and Remedial.

"W-What? Golly-gee noooo!" Dolly cried out as she fell into the dark portal, banished to the shadow realm for remedial classes.

Amity sighed in relief and turned to her Abomination. "Thanks for the assist, Phil."

While the judges made their notes, Amity started to leave the stadium.

"Very impressive, my student."

Amity's eyes widened when she heard a familiar face and she turned around to see her hooded mentor. "Lilith!" Amity exclaimed in surprise. "What are you doing here? Is this about-"

"I only came to watch your progress," Lilith answered. "I'll admit, you were a bit more unorthodox than I was expecting. But I mean that in a good way. Creative thinking like that is just what the Emperor's Coven needs. I'm proud of you."

Amity smiled. "Thank you, Lilith." she replied, before looking down. "I should probably… stick around and see how Luz does."

"Yes, I should also see how my niece does in her duel," Lilith said before noticing Amity's look. "Is there something wrong, Amity?"

Amity kept looking down at the floor as she sighed. "It's just… after the exams, I won't be allowed to hang out with Luz anymore."

"Why not?" Lilith asked, though she already suspected the answer.

"My mom," she told her, which didn't surprise Lilith. "She told me that I couldn't afford any more slip ups, and told me that I… couldn't see Luz again." Her voice sounded upset, which Lilith took notice of. She patted her student's shoulder and Amity looked up to her.

"Don't worry, once the exams are over, I'll have a word with Odalia," Lilith assured gently.

"I don't know if you could convince her," Amity said. "You know how she is."

"Trust me dear, she'll have to listen," Lilith said with the ghost of a smile.

Cat struggled through the snow, unable to make it close enough to the trapped Gus to touch him.

"You know what? I'll just have to blast you!" Cat drew a spell circle and shot an ice beam at Gus. "Prepare to be frozen!" However, this Gus turns out to be another illusion. "A clone!?" Cat cried out and noticed Gus popping out of the snow elsewhere.

'Thank you Luz's ninja manga for the influence!' Gus thought to himself as he looked at the clock. Seven minutes had passed, all he needed was to last three more. Though one of his arms still wouldn't move, that just meant he had to think more creatively.

"You know, we at the Healing Coven deal with people like all the time," Cat said as she approached Gus. "Patients who run from the doctors trying to give them their shots. This means you have to know how to detain them." She drew spell circles in the air and summoned several levitating straight jackets. "So you better give up, Porter, because you can't outrun a doctor!"

"Since when are you this theatrical?!" Gus asked, using his free hand to create more duplicates of himself as the straight jackets came for him. While trying to plan his next action, he ended up tripping and falling face first to the floor.

Cat wiped out the Gus clones and saw that the real Gus had fallen. "Show's over, little man," she said as she stepped towards him and turned Gus over. Her eyes widened when she saw guts, blood, and that his face was now a skull "EEEK!" she cried out, stepping away. "Oh my Titan…"

"Cat Harwitch," spoke a coven guard who pointed at her accusingly. "You are hereby charged with a murder against student Augustus Porter! To the paddy wagon for ya!"

"Nonononono, please! I'm too young to go to jail!" Cat cried out while on her knees.

"Are you resisting arrest?" the guard questioned as she confronted her.

"Nononono, I-I-I surrender!" Cat cried out in tears, raising her hands up.

"That's all I need," spoke a voice that surprised Cat, she turned around and saw that Gus had risen from the floor. He snapped his fingers, the guard and the gore around him disappearing.

Nine Minutes Passed.

Augustus Porter Wins, Cat Harwitch… to the Shadow Realm for Test Make-Up and Remedial.

"You tricked me!" Cat called Gus out, though she was less angry and more surprised. A dark portal opened up beneath her and Cat fell through, crying out as she was banished to the shadow realm.

"Sorry," Gus apologized, rubbing the back of his head.

"I'm sorry, I didn't catch that," Willow said while her eye twitched. "What did you just call me, blockhead?"

"I just called you a vegan," Simon repeated while charging at Willow in a sprint, leaving behind a cloud of dirt. Willow summoned a bloom to entrap herself in and went underground before Simon could hit her. His horn struck the wall, causing it to crack. As he pulled his horn out, Willow popped out from the ground in the bloom. He turned to her and saw Willow coming out of the bloom, but her hair was looser and her expression was angry as her eyes glowed green.

"I get pushed around and picked on a lot. I've been called many names…" Willow's voice sounded otherworldly as thorns started sprouting from the ground around her. "Half-A-Witch, Leaf Girl, a pushover, but if there's one thing that I hate being called more than anything else..." Her hair stood up as Willow stomped and caused a large tree to sprout from the ground, her arms flexing causing her green sleeves to tear and to show the muscles of her biceps. "IT'S BEING CALLED A VEGAN! THAT IMPLIES THAT I EAT THE PLANTS AROUND ME, BUT I'M A CARNIVORE!" Large thorn vines sprouted from the ground around her.

Simon began dodging the thorny vines that were being shot at him until he felt one grab him "What the-!?" Before he could react, he was thrown by the vine into a wall on the other side of the room. When he got back up, his armor was cracked and his helmet was slightly broken off showing a part of his face. "Now this is a worthy fight!" he declared as he drew his spell circle, pressed it onto the wall behind him, and a large stony fist sprouted from it. Willow retaliated with a large bush fist made of thorns and wood.

"I won't let you walk out of here for comparing me to those STINKIN' ANIMAL-LOVING BEAST KEEPERS!" Willow raged. The spectators that came to watch her match were amazed but certain orange-sleeve track students felt a sting from her comment.

'You didn't need to target us like that,' the Beast-Keeping students thought to themselves while watching this epic match.

Luz, still waiting, grumbled to herself. "Come on, it's been eleven minutes since the last match began, how long is this going to take?" Luz asked no one in particular while leaning on the wall.

"I wonder if Viney, Jerbo, and Barcus are having to wait this long," Luz muttered, while feeling an itch on her neck. "What is up with this itch?!"

"So, it has come down to this," Viney said, her eyes narrowing while face to face with Jerbo. It was time for their match and it was against each other.

"Yes," Jerbo agreed. "Never thought I would see this day…"

"There's only one way to settle this," Viney said as she raised her fist. Jerbo raised his fist as well and they both shouted. "Hex, Plague, Construct- shoot!" They shook their fists and held up hand gestures, Jerbo smirked while Viney complained. "Oh man! Plague beats Hexes!"

"Time to summon my Abominable Moss Man!" Jerbo waved his finger while summoning his large Abominable Moss Man.

Viney summoned Puddles. "Puddles, time to fly!"

One of the spectators, Emira, who was watching the match after completing hers, was looking at Viney in admiration. She was contemplating if she should cheer for Viney but didn't know how to without giving away her crush.

"You got this!" was all Emira could say, while her face blushed like a tomato.

Mattholomule had constructed a stone pillar, which was a little sloppy but good enough to get himself away from the ghost dogs summoned by Barcus's potions cauldron.

"I just have to stay like this for a few minutes, just a few minutes," he said to himself while hugging the pillar.

Amelia Regal loses the duel, but has lasted over the time limit.

While Skara was waiting for her match, she heard the announcement and saw Amelia being taken away by some nurses. "Amelia, are you going to be alright?" she asked.

"Yeah," Amelia replied, having a cast on one of her legs and an arm. "Looks like I didn't count on facing large spider demons. Good luck on your match."

Skara gulped, realizing that it was now her turn. When she entered the ring, she saw Bo on the opposite side..

Skara Brooke and Bo Row will now begin their witch duel.

"H-Hey Bo…" Skara waved at her nervously, but Bo looked indifferent. Skara did not see the shine in Bo's eyes anymore, only determination.

"You know, there was a time that I never thought I would have to challenge a friend," Bo admitted. "But just because it's you, doesn't mean I'm gonna hold back!"

"W-What-" Skara couldn't finish her sentence as Bo drew two spell circles and targeted her with a blizzard.

Luz Clawthorne, you may now step into the dueling ring.

"Finally!" Luz shouted. "Thanks for listening, Louis!"

"No problem!" the reptile student behind her replied, waving at her.

Luz stepped into the ring, wondering who she would be dueling. She brought out her bat and her glyph cards as she saw someone appear on the other side of the ring. Her eyes widened when she saw who she was facing. "Boscha?"

"Well, looks like you're my opponent," Boscha said with an indifferent look. "Human."

Luz Clawthorne and Boscha Hieron will now begin their witch duel.

Luz waited to see if Boscha would make her move. "What's wrong, afraid I'll thrash you around?" she taunted, but Boscha just stared at Luz in silence. "Fine then, time to show off my new spell card!" She slapped a different kind of glyph card, this time a light glyph and plant glyph combined with an image of a ghost-shaped figure, on her bat.

Her bat glowed brightly and a pair of eyes popped up from each side. The top of the bat started to split, forming a mouth with teeth.

"After dealing with the ghosts in the Abominations Track, I managed to upgrade an animation spell that could bring my bat to life!" Luz declared while holding her bat in position. "Say hello to Brucy!"

"Let me at her, mom!" the bat named Brucy shouted.

"Just call me boss, Brucy," Luz told it.

"Oh, is that it?" Boscha asked dryly while holding up her potions. "I'll just make this quick."

Luz charged while holding her bat, slapping an ice glyph card on it as she slammed Brucy onto the ground, creating a row of spiky ice towards Boscha. The triclops witch jumped away from the ice spikes and threw some potions to create colorful clouds of smoke. Luz continued to go after Boscha though through the cloud of smoke, but when she went to pin her Boscha down it turned out to be an illusion. "Huh?" Luz asked, while surrounded in colorful smoke. "I just saw her… impossible. There's no way you can do illusions!" She saw Boscha standing some distance away with her arms crossed. Luz charged at her, out of the smoke.

However, when she got too close Boscha disappeared again. "What the hell?" Luz shouted as she looks around for Boscha. "How are you doing that?!"

"Hey boss," Brucy stated. "I'm seeing more Boschas!"

Luz realized that she was surrounded by Boscha duplicates, who were scattered all over the ring. "You're in the Potions Track! You don't do illusions?!"

"Oh please, like I need illusions to get my enemies," Boscha said while looking at her own nails. "That colorful smoke you ran through without a second thought was a special family potion meant to give our enemies a taste of confusion." Boscha started to come in different colors to Luz. "Or simply put, you're hallucinating."

"Crap…" Luz gritted her teeth. "You must be hallucinating too…"

"No, cause I've been through enough potions to build up an immunity," Boscha stated as her third eye glowed. "You see, my third eye can calculate any variable I need to take you down. I can think of thirteen different ways to take you down and this is one I chose. The effects of the potion will slowly make your body numb and in about ten minutes you will completely shut down.."

This confused Luz. "T-Ten minutes? But… I'll still pass by then…"

"I know," came Boscha's voice from behind. As Luz turned around, Boscha grabbed her and slammed her to the wall, pressing her arm against her neck, causing Luz to gasp for air. "Remember that this is what you did to me?" Boscha demanded, Luz's eyes widening as she struggled, but she had dropped her bat. "Amity may be forgiving, but not me…"

Willow and Simon's match continued, each throwing out multiple punches of either plant or constructive stone at the other. Both were going at it intensively. Gus was now a spectator.

"Go Willow!" Gus shouted as he looked at the timer. 'They're really going at it for the last eighteen minutes!' he thought.

"It's time to finish this off!" Willow shouted as she summoned another large plant fist that towered over Simon.

Simon smirked. "I've never had an opponent that lasted this long against me before!" He smacked his hands on the ground, creating a pillar below him to launch him at the large plant fist. "YAAAAARRRR!" he shouted as he threw his fist at the plant fist.

The impact was powerful as the two fists clashed into a mighty explosion.

Amity and Lilith, while looking for Luz's match, felt the building around them shake

"These matches have become even more bombastic," Lilith commented.

"I think she went in there," Amity said, pointing to the entrance of Room C.

When the dust settled in Room E, the spectators saw that both Willow and Simon were still standing and breathing heavily.

"What… a… blast," Simon managed to say. His uniform had some tears. "Willow Park… how are you… this powerful?"

Willow struggled to catch her breath before answering. "I think… I have some… years of pent up anger issues… I think I got out of control?" Willow replied, before passing out on the floor.

"I… got that," Simon nodded, also passing out to the ground.

Well… both of you manage to pass… someone call the nurses.

As Amity and Lilith entered Room C, they were shocked with horror by what they saw.

"Luz!" Lilith and Amity shouted.

In the ring, Luz was still standing. She tried to catch her breath, but Boscha delivered a blow to her stomach that caused her to cough up vile.

"Boscha… stop…" Luz stepped back. "I...I for-" Boscha grabbed her throat to prevent Luz from speaking.

"No… no I don't think so," Boscha stated as she slammed Luz to the floor. "You're getting weaker thanks to the effects of my potions and I'm going to make sure you remember every second of this." Luz struggled, trying and failing to fight Boscha off.

"Boscha, stop this!" Amity cried out.

The triclops witch heard the Blight and turned to her. "Stay out of this! I don't know why you think this human is your friend all of the sudden, but-" She received a smack on the cheek from Luz, which Boscha responded to by grabbing her wrist and slamming it down to the ground hard, twisting her arm.

"AAAAAAAAH!" Luz cried out in pain. She held onto her injured arm as Boscha stood up.

Lilith, seeing that this battle was going too far, tried to enter the ring and intervene. However, she was prevented from doing this by a force field that knocked her down. "What is this? Stop this match at once!" she demanded, hitting the magical force field.

Spectators are not allowed to interfere once the duel has begun.

"This isn't even a duel anymore! This is a beat down!" Lilith gritted her teeth in anger. "Don't you know who I am?!"

"Boscha, please stop! I don't know what you're trying to prove!" Amity shouted at Boscha.

"I'm only showing who Luz Clawthorne really is," Boscha declared. She noticed that Luz was trying to crawl and she stomped on her leg, causing Luz to let out a blood-curdling scream.

The feeling of being helpless was bringing back those memories… the slayground…

"Look what you made me do," Boscha said, while turning over Luz and grabbing her shirt, pulling her up. "You're no witch, you'll never be a witch. You're nothing but a punk who tries to pretend she's something she's not…"

Bump saw that Luz and Boscha's match was getting out of hand and he turned to Craig. "Stop this match now!" he demanded.

"No, I don't think I will," Craig said.

"What?" Bump asked in disgust. "For crying out loud, do you know whose daughter that is? Do you know what she'll do if she finds out-"

"I am aware, Principal Bump," Craig said, his emotions hard to read due to the mask. "I am aware that you have allowed the daughter of a criminal to attend your school. The Owl Lady will be dealt with eventually, but I think this should send a pretty clear message to her."

Anu Bist gritted his teeth, wanting to stop the match but there was nothing he could do. However, he did notice how Luz was starting to show the signs…

Luz was pinned to the wall again, leaving an impact.

"Do you honestly think that trying to act and pretend like a witch would earn you respect?" Boscha asked angrily. "Think, Luz, in this world you're judged by your appearance, personality, the magic you have. Reality check: you don't have any magic, you're a shitty asshole, and do you know what pisses me off about you? Everyone tries to justify who you are but I see who you really are, even Willow thinks so too. You will never be one of us."

Luz was trying to stay conscious. Her vision was blurry and her muscles started to relax, as if her whole body was falling asleep. The feeling of pins and needles inside of her was making her feel numb. She started to slowly close her eyes… and opened them wide showing they were pitch black with blue irises.

And in that moment, everything changed.

Well...that was intense...but don't worry, the next chapter will be coming soon as I'm writing it...now...please don't hate me for leaving things like this...but don't worry, folks, cause if you read the story enough, you all should have know that there's a plan to everything.

Kudos to BuckJohnson for the beginning cold opening of the chapter. We also like to make note about after the "Through the Looking Glass Ruins" episode, we do feel bad for how the treatment with Mattholomule was in the previous chapters after seeing that episode. We've come to consider this moment between him and Bo since in canon they're shown together as much as Bo and Skara, giving him some more layers and reasons behind his behavior if you've seen that episode. Whether you still like him or not, it's shown that he isn't beyond redemption.

Also some backstory about Boscha's first meeting with Luz...yeah, these flashbacks as I should let you know before interpretation, did happened in the story. Luz pretty much shot first. While Boscha may be an unpleasant witch, Luz didn't make it better, especially her actions. Boscha may be a bully, but if there's one thing you can tell from her character, at least so far, is that she hates liars. She sees Luz as nothing but a liar as not only to others, but to herself. Hell, Boscha is straight forward with her bullying, as well as drawing out what kind of family she's in. And she is right about one thing about Luz, who wasn't honest on a lot of things about herself.

Now for introductions to the chapter, I've given some OCs:

Dolly Tempus: A Oracle Track student who is pretty much a Shirley Temple-expy who's got a haunting rag doll named Jojo, as a homage to Annabelle. She comes off as sweet and sugary, but underneath she loves to spread fear. She's got dreams and ambition, and wants to take down Amity. Though after how short this match went, Dolly got banished to the shadow realm.

Simon Saltstar: Top of the Construction Track, Simon is pretty much the strongest witch in physical strength. He can form armor construction magic, making himself form into armor for battle and extra strength. He lives to battle in Witch Duels, and prefers strong opponents. His armor is basically a homage reference to Kamen Rider Gai from Kamen Rider Ryuki.

And now for the reviews:

RonaldM: I think in Owl House's case, it's a separate claim. Alchemy is probably equates to magic and science.

BuckJohnson: Oh things will get interesting indeed...

Ultimate-drax: Oh yeah, those gnomes had it coming.

Zachlor06: "Top of Her School" from a Owl House Animatic by Hushbrush

The Great Fossil King: The Basilisk won't be appearing until...a few chapters more. Yeah, thinking outside of canon, there's going to be more stories to tell before I get to "The First Day"

OMAC001: Not a lot do, but this should give some good closure with this Mabel.

ReviewerDWJ: Well, hope you like to continue reading this...

MysteryGirl7Freak: Secrets, secrets, and more secrets...

RJWritingInk: Thanks.

Shuffollwer: You're right, it was Wade from Kim Possible. Also thanks to you, I got Crosshot to make a TV Tropes page of this story.

Crosshot: THANK YOU VERY MUCH! But I couldn't have done this fic without the help from BuckJohnson, he's been a good creative consultant and beta-reader and a good friend. We both love Owl House, and we hope we give this wonderful story the attention it needs. Thank you, for making it possible to create a TV Tropes page for this story.

Remember to fav, follow and Review, and be sure to visit this fic's tv tropes page. Next chapter, the conclusion of the exams and Luz's unexpected development...
