Chapter 60: One Last Year
Asulmagus' wings carried him across the sea, and soon Monster Island came into sight. He quickly headed to the center of the island to speak to the others.
"Good to have you back, Asulmagus," said Godzilla, "how insane was you time away this time?"
"If anything worse than last time?" said Asulmagus, "My Godfather took me to a sports game, and in the aftermath there was an attack by crazed cultists. Once I got to the school, I learned they were hosting a multi-school gladiatorial tournament, a tournament that had been canceled in the past due to the deaths of too many participants. On top of that, one of the professors was being impersonated by one of said cultists".
"And you ended up having to compete?" asked Anguirus.
"Unfortunately I did. Someone, either the aforementioned cultist or the Headmaster, forced me into the tournament" said Asulmagus, "It was either that, or die for refusing to put my life at risk it the tournament".
"What sort of trials did you have to face?" asked Godzilla.
"Having to take a fake egg from the nest of a nesting mother dragon," said Asulmagus, "then rescuing a kidnapped student from the bottom of an icy cold lake in the middle of winter, and finally solving a maze full of dangerous creatures. It should be mentioned that the headmaster of the school was the one who actually did the kidnapping".
"You were told you only need to complete one more year at this academy, correct?" asked Mothra, "This next year will definitely be your last there. From what you've told me, there are far better and more sensible places of education much closer to our home".
"You won't get many complaints from me," said Asulmagus, "though depending on how things work out, there are a few people I'd want to bring with me".
"I have a feeling I don't really want to ask, but did anything else happen?" asked Godzilla.
"During the Third Task, someone hexed the trophy to kidnap anyone who touched it. Those same cultists were trying to resurrect their master, and attempted to use my blood in the ritual," said Asulmagus, "it exploded instead".
Mothra stared at Asulmagus, and expanded her senses to feel for the pulse of the world. Finally, she had her answer.
"Their master still lives," said Mothra, "but… his hourglass runs low".
"What do you mean?" asked Godzilla.
"The blood of Asulmagus has returned this one to a semblance of life," Said Mothra, "but he will not become one of us. He will not become a kaiju. Rather, the power will kill him slowly, and burn through the artifacts that anchor him to this realm".
"So, if I do nothing, Voldemort will be gone," said Asulmagus, "at least that's one issue resolved".
"Yes, but where one problem vanishes, another appears," said Mothra, "our… allies amongst humankind have been keeping a lookout, and there have been rumblings of a potential invasion".
"How bad are we talking about?" asked Godzilla.
"Unknown, but there is a chance this may be a major invasion force," said Mothra, "Make certain your mental defenses haven't lapsed. As well, they may be bringing or controlling multiple kaiju. This might end up being a worldwide battle. We all must be prepared".
"You heard her!" said Godzilla, "we all need to do our part: not just us here on the Island, but all of our kind worldwide! Get the word out! All of our kin across the globe must be prepared!"
The meeting broke up, and each of them went about their own business. For Asulmagus, it was back to studying the magic he'd been discovering. He'd used his continued study of Arithmancy and Runes to come up with new ideas. His current project was, from what his calculation were showing, some sort of spell for transportation. Not apparition or teleportation, but more like opening a door between two points vast distances apart. There was one issue though. The issue was that if his math was correct, he wouldn't be able to test it. The energy draw was massive and would require the spell to be anchored to a place of great power. On top of that, it would take him some time to cast as he'd have to draw each rune individually when it was time to cast it.
But that was a consideration for later. He needed to rest. He had a meeting with Nicolas in a few days to discuss what his future might hold.
The day came, and he took wing for France. He activated his limiter, and slipped into the city to meet with his friend. They ended up in the magical shopping district within Paris, having a quiet lunch as they discussed different options for his potential continued education.
"So you think that a school located somewhere along the shores of the Pacific would be a good option?" asked Harry.
"Indeed, unless you decide to go for hiring personal tutors instead" said Nicolas, "There are a number of excellent educational institutions all around the Ring of Fire. Most are smaller and considered less prestigious than Hogwarts or Beuxbatons, but that also means the professors have more time to spend on each student. In the Americas for example, there's the Cascades Arcane Academy, the Sierra College of Magic, The Atacama Institute, the Denali University of Magic, The Maui Magical Academy, as well as various magical schools across Japan, the Pacific islands, as well as Australia. If you go with this option then I'd recommend one of the English-speaking countries. That said, if you're looking for something closer to the Hogwarts experience, the Eastern United States also is home of Ilvermony".
As they continued their discussion, Harry noticed that they were being approached by a familiar face: It was Fleur, along with her younger sister and a woman who must have been her mother. Harry also noticed a contingent of aurors trying (and failing) to be stealthy.
"'arry?" said Fleur, "what a surprise!"
"Fleur, nice to see you again," said Harry.
"Zis is my muzzer, Appoline Delacour," said Fleur, "and this is the one I told you about".
"I see," said Appoline, "and I see you are here with some of the most venerable members of our society. How did you meet Nicolas?"
"It's a long story ma'am," said Harry, "but I'd be a fool not to listen to his hard earned wisdom".
"I appreciate your praise, Mr. Potter," said Nicolas, "and good to see you as well, Madam Delecour".
Appoline looked closer at Harry, seeing what truly lay beneath the disguise he wore. As she saw the truth, she tensed, but quickly schooled her features.
"So, what Fleur 'as told me is true," said Appoline, "you are one of the Titans, ze the defenders of Earth. Use caution, your power can destroy just as much as it can protect".
"I'm well aware," said Harry, "you should be ready as well. It's likely that within a year's time, there will be a major invasion from beyond the stars".
Appoline nodded, and headed off, taking her daughters with her. Harry wasn't sure that to make if this encounter, but at least nothing bad came of it.
Back in Britain, Voldemort was busy studying the book that Lucius had given him. He didn't recognize the author at first, until Lucius explained 'Simon Croswell' was a pen-name used by famed alchemist Nicolas Flamel. As he read the book, he was intrigued. He remembered hearing tales of these creatures, these kaiju. At the time, he discounted them as nothing more than Muggle nonsense. Now though, here was evidence to these creatures being real. Not only the words of a reliable source, but also the magical photos of these creatures interacting with each other.
There he found it: the creature he recognized from the fragmented memories left over from his destroyed horcruxes, it was Asulmagus. Even more shocking was that it was smaller than the other creatures. He continued to study the material presented, learning about the sheer power these creatures possessed. He came upon another photo of Asulmagus, one in which it was clearly using magic. These creatures were clearly intelligent as well, then. All the same, he didn't know of any magic powerful enough to effect a creature like that… he doubted even the Killing Curse would be sufficient. Perhaps it would be better to continue building his strength quietly for now, best to try and avoid being underfoot.
A/N: And there we go! Next time: The end of Summer. See you then!
