Chapter 14
At the beginning of August, Harry registered himself at the High School for eleventh grade without too many difficulties due to his previous year's transcripts from Mystic Falls, having only changed his age slightly so he could get by without glamours. He had also taken to helping Mr. Martin around the pizza place downstairs to give him something else to do with his time and actually enjoyed it quite a bit, having taken a real liking to pizza ever since coming to the states. The restaurant was never too busy doing most of it's business as take out, and he ended up meeting and getting to know several more people from town including some of his upcoming fellow classmates that were for the most part down to earth and friendly.
Near the end of the month as school was quickly approaching, he was finally confronted by Clark, who demanded to know about his relationship and intentions with Lois as well as what happened on their first date and the fight with the three men outside the club. Harry told him that he had been studying martial arts and hand to hand fighting for a few years, and that what he and Lois did was none of his business. He didn't like that one bit and got in Harry's face trying to scare him off or intimidate him, but Harry merely brushed him aside further angering the boy with the unusual sense of power.
Harry then spent some time spying on Clark trying to discover what it was about him that he felt, and soon learned that the farm boy had special powers of strength and speed thinking he was a mutant having seen similar skills before. Harry decided to confront him one morning when he saw him fixing the Kent farm at speeds no regular human could match, causing the usually polite boy to freeze up and stammer dumbly that he had no idea what Harry was talking about. Harry in turn explained his time living with the other mutant under Charles Xavier and some of the powers that they weilded, and told Clark it was nothing to worry about.
Clark seemed to accept that description, although Harry got the feeling that there was more to the farm boy than a simple mutant gene but let it go for the time being. Harry admitted to having a great strength and speed himself and let him believe that he too was a mutant since that was a lot easier to explain than magic, Immortals, and vampires. He offered to spar with Clark and teach him some of his moves, but Clark was very reluctant to fight him not believing that he wouldn't hurt Harry if it got out of hand.
Harry ignored his reluctance and pushed magic into his body increasing his already advanced speed, strength, and senses and attacked Clark to get an idea of just how powerful the slightly younger boy was. He was then shocked when his attacks were blocked and countered better than any mutant or vampire he had faced previously, as he had unheard of levels of strength that Colossus and Logan would be impressed by and was faster than any vampire he met. He surprised Clark too, who wasn't expecting that level of attack or the skill Harry showed in blocking and shrugging off all his counterattacks almost matching his speed and strength but with much more refined skill and techniques than anyone he had faced up to that point.
From that day on, the two became friends and worked out together in the mornings after Clark finished his chores which Harry often helped him with so they could get in more sparing. Clark's advanced speed and strength matched well against Harry's greater tactical skill, and pushed them both to improve in the areas they lacked and the other excelled in causing them both to usually end their sparing with numerous bruises and ruined clothes from the beatings they gave each other. They were both very happy that they had someone they could fight and practice with that they couldn't seriously injure, and took to hanging out together more and more as school started at the beginning of September.
The classes at school quickly got boring for Harry after he read through all his textbooks and seemingly had no problems learning all the new material or keeping up. Clark got very busy quickly with the return of his ex-girlfriend Lana and deciding to try out for the Football team under the new coach Jason Teague. Harry wasn't too impressed with Lana finding her a bit shallow and dull, but understood Clark's need to try and make a name for himself by joining the team and wasn't at all worried about his control on his powers.
Harry was somewhat worried about Lois though, who quickly got into the role of investigative journalist with Chloe for the school paper the Torch, and went digging into some random girl's life and was seemingly becoming obsessed. After realizing that she had disappeared, along with Clark and Chloe, Harry helped track her down at Dr. Fine's office where she was being held for platic surgery experimentation and luckily arrived in time to put a stop to it. Harry learned then about the meteor rocks in Smallville that caused weird effects and powers similar to a mutants, and was amazed at Chloe's "Wall of Weird" at the Torch explaining the one's they discovered or knew about.
He wondered if these meteor rocks were also the reason for Clark's powers, but knew that Clark only wanted to help people and do good and wouldn't ever use them for evil purposes. A few weeks later there was another meteor related mystery involving the cheerleading team using an unspecified love potion to control their boyfriends on the football team, and was luckily stopped before Chloe and Clark made fools of themselves or got into any trouble. In October, another mutant or meteor freak as Chloe called them arrived in Smallville causing problems for everyone, and Clark felt the need to help and befriend the troubled teen that possessed super speed even faster than Clark himself.
Harry was quickly realizing that Smallville had a whole mess of problems caused by those meteor rocks that opperated on a completely unique magical frequency that took him a while to understand and pinpoint in others. Likewise, he learned that Clark's powers were the complete opposite of the magic he felt in the meteor rocks and concluded that they were not the cause of his friend's powers or abilities, but that the meteor rocks did affect him greatly. Harry began to think that wherever he went, he would be in the middle of drama and mystery, and would never find someplace where he could both relax, be himself, and still belong.
During the Halloween weekend, Harry told his friends he was going camping before the weather got too bad, and instead apparated to New York City to see and talk to Duncan about how to deal with life and Immortality. Their nice relaxing weekend was interupted however by another Immortal searching to kill the Highlander, and Harry asked if he could take a shot at him having not had a chance for a real sword fight in months. Duncan agreed and let Harry meet the man that night in a deserted alley in his stead, totally pissing off the Immortal that was hoping to meet up with and kill the Highlander.
The guy was good Harry had to admit, but Harry was just too fast and strong even though he was trying to tone down his power the entire time and within ten minutes the final result was a forgone conclusion. Harry though passed up several chances to end the fight quickly hoping to prolong it and get in a good workout, but eventually couldn't keep toying with the man and ended his life with a successive number of strikes he simply couldn't defend. After a particularly strong quickening, Harry returned to Duncan's to find Methos and Joe both present wondering how the fight went, and laughing at Harry's disappointment that it was too easy.
Methos asked him if he thought it was too easy, how would he like to spar against both him and Duncan together, which Harry quickly agreed to. Harry was able to fight at almost full speed but still didn't add any magic into his body against the two incredibly skilled Immortals, and was not only holding his own, but keeping them on the defensive more often than not. After almost thirty minutes with his two opponents slowly starting to tire, Harry started getting a little over confident, and ended up making a mistake that he quickly paid for by taking a stab in his chest from Duncan and a slice across his back from Methos. He came to with a gasp a few hours later to find the two men with Joe all drinking and waiting on him, and they both congratulated and berated him for his increased speed and skill, but also for his lack of focus throughout the fight and wondered how he got so much better.
Harry ended up explaining to them about the quickenings he received from killing vampires and the increased speed, strength, and senses gifted to him that was the reason for his growing abilities, as well as his current training partner Clark whose strength and speed easily outstripped anyone he had ever fought before. He even set up ten animated swordsmen, and demonstrated his abilities at full strength with pumping magic into his body as he used to when combating the faster vampires and that now came naturally. He decimated the training dummies in seconds, making both Methos and Duncan give him looks of shock and pride, and thanked him for not going all out against them.
The trio enjoyed the rest of the weekend, and Harry realized how much he missed being around older and more mature adults and attributed that to why he wasn't enjoying Smallville as much as he had his last few places. When he showed up back in school on Monday, he discovered that he missed another crazy meteor adventure with Clark and Lionel Luther swapping bodies for a bit and causing all kinds of problems that needed fixing. Clark was struggling for a few days with damage control, but was glad that Harry wanted to continue working out in the mornings so he could let off some of his frustration as it really seemed to help keep him calm throughout the day.
Over the next two weeks Harry and Lois spent a good amount of time together, her often spending the night as his place as they enjoyed their purely physical relationship. During that time Clark got involved with a bookie as did many other people around town, but Harry had stayed out of it completely not knowing a thing about American muggle sports. Eventually they realized the bookie was a meteor freak using powers of compulsion to get kids hooked into gambling until Clark, along with Chloe's help put a stop to him.
Harry's growing displeasure and the need to move on from Smallville, came about from an unusual event at the very end of November as Chloe's eighteenth birthday was approaching, and Lana was possessed by the spirit of a french witch from the 1600's. She also managed a spell which caused Lois and Chloe to be possessed as well, by the spirits of the french witch's two friends and showed up at Chloe's surprise birthday party at the Kent Farm. Harry had arrived late after going to Metropolis to buy the birthday girl a new top of the line laptop, and showed up as the three witches threw Lana's boyfriend James through the barn's second story window and trying to leave the scene.
Harry followed Countess Isobel, the whole time wondering why he had run into so many girls named Isobel or Isabel or Isabella and why they were all crazy, making a note to himself never to get too involved with anybody that has that name. The Countess and her two witch sidekicks led him to the Kawatche Caves, where he could finally attack them as there were no more witnesses to see his powers or get caught in the crossfire. He sent stunning spells at the three witch possessed women, and only hitting Lois who was the closest and the first he aimed at giving the other two just enough time to avoid theirs. Lana waved her hand throwing Harry backward wandlessly, but a quickly cast cushioning charm on the wall behind him prevented him from any kind of injury.
The two remaining witches had pretty nasty smirks on their faces as they realized they were fighting another magic user, and began sending countless stones of various sizes at him with deadly speed and accuracy along with several spells. A sweep of his wand sent the majority of them back at his attackers as he avoided the rest, and while they were busy defending themselves, he sent a follow up pair of strong stunning spells that hit and knocked out Chloe but just pissed off Lana's possessed Countess. She lashed out with several very dark and painful curses that Harry was barely able to dodge even with his enhanced speed as more continued coming in a never ending stream of very powerful magic.
She then exploded the ground in front of him, knocking him backwards again with the flying debris, and immediately followed it with a series of stone spikes one of which was imbedded into his stommach. She cheered in success knowing the spike would kill him, and therefore was unprepared for Harry's last ditch effort of a spirit banashing hex that knocked her off her feet. Harry's last breath came knowing that he at least stopped the threat for now, but didn't account for Isobel's spirit to not disappear completely but just retreat into the tattoo on Lana's back just as Clark, Lex Luthor, and Jason arrived on the scene.
Harry came to with a gasp, and immediately discovered a sheet covering his body and many voices echoing off the cave walls, realizing at least that he hadn't been moved even if the stone spike had thankfully been taken from his stommach. He tossed the sheet aside in time to see several people gasp and stare at him in wide eyed shock, and he could only groan at his misfortune at having so many witnesses to his Immortality. Aside from Clark, Lex, and Jason, there were also several EMS people and two cops attending to a groaning Lana, and still unconscious Lois and Chloe.
"Gentlemen," greeted Harry with a dry scratchy throat and nod of his head as he struggled with his still weak body to stand up as nobody even attempted to make a move towards him still stuck in total shock.
"Y-you were ...d-d-dead!" exclaimed one of the paramedics, an older middle aged man with thinning mousy brown hair and terrified eyes, finally getting the others to react though still very much affraid.
"Eh ...it happens," shrugged Harry once he got himself standing, causing the men to again widen their eyes in shock and a bit of confusion.
"Harry ...what's going on?" asked Clark finally breaking out of his stupor, as everyone just stared at him fearfully, and even Clark's voice wasn't the friendly one he remembered but much more accusing and harsh.
"I doubt you'd believe me ...even if you did just witness it," shrugged Harry again, trying to think of a way to obliviate everyone present and what story to feed them.
Before anyone could say anything else, Harry wandlessly summonsed his fallen wand and silently cast a lumos maximus startling everybody and giving him a chance to stupefy Clark, Lex, Jason, and then the cops and EMS. He then quickly went through each of the men, obliviating his presence in the cave from their memories before casting a disillusionment spell on himself so they wouldn't see him when he woke them all up. He hid in the back corner of the cave as he watched the men and women wake up quickly and look around them in confusion, before remembering why they were here and quickly checking over the women and helping them stand.
Jason and Lex both went to help Lana, while Clark went to Chloe and Lois, and the cops and EMS looked around wondering why exactly they were still needed and packed up their supplies and left. The rest of the group was soon following them oblivious to what just happened, except for Clark who was looking around the cave for something, and stopped in wide eyed fear as he spotted the still hidden Harry. Harry was understandably nervous and scared as Clark seemed to be putting back the pieces of memory of what just happened, and realized that whatever Clark was he was also immune to his memory modification spell.
Harry was worried about the implications of Clark knowing his secret and unable to be obliviated of it, would he still trust and be friends with him? He decided that there was little he could do about it now, and instead apparated to his apartment to take a shower and get cleaned off, always feeling better to sit under hot water after dying. He wasn't too pleased that the he got hit by the stone spike that killed him, but even more so upset that it put an unrepairable hole through his dragonhide jacket. At least he still had his original even if it wasn't in the best of shape either, and wondered if he sholdn't start buying them in bulk.
It wasn't long after his shower though that his dream of at least one restful night was broken. He hoped Clark would wait a day to confront him, but hearing him loudly knock on his door and knowing it was Clark from the feel of power, filled him with dread and apprehension. As he suspected, Clark was there with a skeptical and untrusting look when he opened the door and let the teen in.
"We need to talk," demanded Clark as he entered the apartment, and Harry knew that this wouldn 't be a pleasant conversation from his tone alone.
