Chapter 15

Clark was pretty pissed that Harry tried to erase his memory and had erased the memory of the others, of Harry's presence in the caves without even trying to explain himself coming back to life. Harry argued that nobody would have believed him or understood, and would have treated him differently if not feared him completely and didn't want to take that chance. Clark deflected Harry's questions of why it didn't work on him, and Harry said that as long as Clark had secrets he kept from him and others, so too would he.

Clark tried to deny having secrets from Harry, but the green eyed young man wasn't buying it and told Clark his abilities were like the mutants but still very different in the feel of the younger man's power. CLark reluctantly stopped pestering Harry, not wanting to talk about himself, and realizing that Harry had a point even if he didn't like it and didn't know if he could continue to trust him now. Harry accepted the younger man's decision realizing that this would be hard to recover their friendship from, and told Clark that there were no hard feelings and that he would probably be leaving Smallville once the current semester was finshed as he didn't want to lose the credit for the time he had attended.

Clark left shortly after that announcement, disappointed that he was losing his morning training partner because their secrets created a lack of trust between them, and wondering if he should have shared more and learned the truth about the man who had become a good friend. The next day at school was somewhat forced and tense between the two, and Lois and Chloe quickly picked up on it and pestered them both separately to discover what was wrong to no avail. Harry downplayed the whole thing and ignored the girls for the most part, and quickly started pulling away from the group knowing now that he would be leaving soon.

Over the next few weeks Harry spent more time studying for his first semester exams, hoping to just get them over with so he could move on somewhere else. He did have one more date with Lois in Metropolis that consisted of their usual drinking and dancing at a club followed by an enjoyable night at the same hotel they usually frequented. He told her of his plans to leave Smallville in a few weeks, and she seemed to have accepted that at some level even if she was sad to see him go, having liked the easy relationship they shared.

As a going away present to Lois and her cousin, he paid Mr. Martin through the rest of the school year so they could move in and take over his apartment since Lois and Chloe often complained about their pitiful and cramped living situation. They at first wanted to refuse, but he was adamant that it would help them as well as Mr. Martin, and that he had more than enough money to spend some on the two people who so easily befriended and helped him adjust to Smallville. He hadn't told them that he would be leaving all of his electronics since he couldn't shrink them without destroying them or putting in a lot of work to protect them from his magic, and hoped it would be a great surprise for them.

The week of exams before the Christmas break passed by without too much stress or worry on Harry's part, having prepared himself adequately. On the last day of the term, he went to the office and told them he was moving and needed his transcripts sent to his apartment once his grades were released since he didn't have a forwarding address yet or any idea where he was going or would end up. They weren't too happy that he was leaving in the middle of the school year, but as an adult they had no way to force him to remain in school and promised to comply with his wishes.

During the following week he kept up the charade of packing and moving by parking the moving truck by the back stairs up to his apartment and carrying down some of the lighter items and empty boxes. He had already packed up his furniture into his trunks, and was using a sleeping bag on the floor feeling like he was already camping. After the week ended, he received his school transcripts including the ones from Mystic Falls, and went to the Talon to find Lois and Chloe to say goodbye, hand over his apertment keys, and maybe get a head start on his next destination.

He found the girls enjoying a light lunch which mainly consisted of coffee at the Talon, and handed over the apartment keys and said goodbye, knowing they could keep in touch with cell phones and promising to call when he got to wherever he was going. Chloe gave him a tearful hug goodbye, and Lois gave him a long hard kiss he wouldn't soon forget as they gave their final farewells. Clark came in as he was leaving and gave Harry a firm handshake and good luck wishes to which Harry easily returned, not feeling the need to say or do anything else since they were at least parting on friendly terms.

Since it was only days before Christmas and was pretty cold in town, Harry cast a warming charm on himself so he wouldn't freeze and jumped on his bike and took off into the night. He started his journey heading south hoping to get to better weather and roads before continuing on west and hoping to check out the Grand Canyon.

Harry simply loved the open highways heading south and then west since he could really push his bike and go all out, and found himself in Albequerque, New Mexico faster than he thought possible. He stayed there for a few days, through Christmas, where he opened his few gifts mostly pictures, and took several of himself to return. He then continued west until he reached the Grand Canyon where he set up his tent to camp as the scenery there was simply breathtaking. His orignally planned two day stop, soon turned into almost three weeks of relaxation, hiking, and solitude which he felt \e really needed and deserved.

He reluctantly packed up his things when he felt like he had gotten his full enjoyment out of the area, and continued west to Las Vegas which was almost the exact opposite of the peaceful and serene landscape. Vegas was crowded, loud, and bright and practically surging with energy and entertainment, and he was determined to get the most out of his visit. He went to countless shows and casinos taking in the sights and people, marvelling at everything that went on there and trying to get as much out of the experience as he could.

He did a fair bit of gambling and for the most part had surprisingly broke even after almost two weeks of keeping busy and highly entertained. He discovered that he was an absolutely lousy poker player, the slot machines were rigged, and craps was not kind to him, while blackjack was easily his favorite and best game where he at least had a chance. On his last day, after checking out of his very nice hotel, he took his remaining chips totalling just over a thousand American dollars to the roullette wheel since he didn't want to go through the hassle of cashing out and figured to quickly lose it.

He put his chips on black thirteen and was just turning away to leave when they called his number and color, stopping him in shock and giving him way more money to play with. He stared wide eyed at his now large pile of chips totalling almost forty thousand dollars at a 35 to 1 payout. He pulled almost half of them back into his pocket and moved the twenty thousand remaining over to red fourteen earning many gasps and even one other player putting his own chips with Harry's with a shrug when everyone present looked at him.

Since his winnings were all a bonus now anyways, and he had already kept almost twenty thousand, he wasn't too worried about throwing away half of his previous winnings. When the marble stopped at red fourteen however, he almost chocked in shock as those watching gaped and then cheered for his incredible luck and newly won fortune. He gave each of the other seven players as well as the dealer a thousand dollar chip in thanks from his pile of now 650K, which required one of the casino staff members to come and pay him out and ask him to stop playing.

He left the casino with a 600K cashier's check and fifty thousand in cash, having no idea what he was going to do with that much money on hand other than opening an American bank account so he didn't have to touch his Swiss ones. Figuring he could worry about his finances later, he took his bike west hoping to spend some time on the Pacific coast even if it was the beginning of February. He stayed south hoping for the milder weather, and ended up spending two weeks in San Diego exploring the city and the local beaches, as well as setting up an account at an American bank that claimed to have branches throughout the States.

Harry continued on his travels now going north along the more scenic coastal roads, enjoying the scenery of the ocean and beaches along the way to Los Angeles. The city itself was enormous and crowded with traffic, but having his bike made it much easier to navigate and pass by some of the many back ups he encountered. He stopped at one of the nicer hotels he came across in a very expensive part of the city, and got a room that was more impressive than any he had previously stayed in.

After a little over a week visiting the sights in LA, Harry came across the unusual feelings of magical creatures unlike any he had ever known and began to investigate. He tracked a large concentration of this unfamiliar magical energy to an old hotel called the Hyperion that seemed to be a headquarters of some type for a very unusual mix of people. He spied on the building for some time after feeling a powerful and dangerous spell being cast that instantly had Harry thinking it was an unknown type of soul magic and was worried about what was going on in the former hotel.

Shortly afterwards, a good looking solidly built young man about his age but with short dark brown hair and eyes exited the hotel and Harry instantly felt the familiar vampiric magic of him although it was definitely different from any of the ones he felt in Mystic Falls or Volterra. Moments later three more young men came rushing out of the hotel seemingly trying to chase or follow the first man. There was a slightly older bookish looking man with glasses, a tall bald athletic black man, and a short stocky younger man that had a slight resemblance to the first vampire and who also felt slighlty similar to him as well. The other two both had a very minor feel of magic to them as well, but nothing familiar or very pronounced for Harry to be able to decifer it.

He was close enough to hear them talking, and learned their names easily; Wes wore the glasses, Gunn was the athlete, Connor the stocky vampire or demon, and Angel was the vampire who came out first that they were all looking for. Harry stayed put as they spread out and searched for Angel, and was rewarded by seeing said vampire return back minutes later and enter the Hyperion having successfully lost his tails. An hour later when the three searchers came back empty handed, Harry decided to call it a night and returned to his hotel room planning to go back again to do more investigating tomorrow when he was better rested.

The next day, after casting several disguise and stealth spells to not be noticed, Harry snuck into the Hyperion to get a better look and understanding of what was really going on. There he saw a completely green skinned demon named Lorne, an ultra attractive but bitchy girl named Cordelia who seemed to have to have some weird kind of demon feel to her as well, and another attractive but plain girl named Fred along with Wes, Gunn, and Connor from the other night. They were mostly arguing about Angel still being his soulless counterpart Angellus, and the need to kill him now, or in Wes' case capture him and restore his soul correctly this time.

Harry stayed away from the demons as best he could, but did take peaks into the minds of the others to get more background information on what the hell was going on in this city after realizing today that it wasn't naturally overcast every day since the sun was not coming up and being blocked for some reason. He learned about the Beast, a current demon terrorizing the area and blocking the sun as the group believed, and that they usually all worked for Angel Investigations and were fighting the growing demon and vampire problems in the city. Harry was once again shaking his head at his damn curiosity and the bad luck situations he seemed to find everywhere he went, and decided to stay a bit longer and get to the bottom of this mess and maybe even meet the team.

The desire to meet them increased greatly the next day when Wes came back from someplace with an incredibly hot and athletic brunette called Faith, that they refered to as the Slayer. There had been a few small references to the Vampire Slayer in some of the Defence books he had studied in Hogwarts and to fight Voldemort, but he had never really put much stock in it. He learned from Wes' unprotected mind that the Slayer was very real, but a year or so back the original one had momentarily died causing another to be called before she was revived and now they had two, Faith and a girl called Buffy who used to date Angel.

Harry was surprised that a Slayer would date or befriend a vampire, especially one of the demonic ones, but then again Angel was quite unique having his soul and all, unlike others of his kind. Faith seemed to also be a friend of Angel's, and agreed with Wes that he needed to be captured so they could return his soul, and almost killed Connor on the spot when he suggested his desire to just kill the now soulless vampire. Harry followed the Slayer and her former Watcher Wes as they searched some pretty shady bars and places trying to locate and capture Angellus while subtely helping them out when he could get away with it without being noticed.

That worked pretty well for the most part until Wes and Faith finally caught up with Angellus, and the vampire and Slayer got into a brutal fight that had Wes knocked out in seconds and that she was quickly losing until Harry jumped between them and protected her from further harm. Angellus thought nothing of Harry and gave a lazy backhanded swing that would have taken out any regular human, but Harry was anything but normal. He ducked the swing and threw a powerful punch directly into the exposed vampire's gut that drove him back a few feet and had him doubled over in pain for a brief moment while he quickly recouperated and re-evaluated his unusual but normal looking opponent.

Angellus snarled angrily and lept at Harry using his vampiric speed expecting to take him out, and was then unprepared when Harry just as quickly spun out of the way and brrought an overhand chop down onto his neck savagely. The strike dropped Angellus to the ground loudly and painfully, but he again quickly regained his footing and took off away from the unknown and powerfully skilled opponent. Harry let him leave after tagging him with a tracking spell, and turned to see the very attractive brunette Slayer watching him with shocked and wide eyes from her nearby spot on the ground.
