Hailey and Jay walk up the steps of the 21ist district carrying a small bag of trash and a duffle bag full of surveillance equipment. They were exhausted from the long shift in the surveillance van watching a suspect do absolutely nothing all day. All Hailey wanted to do was check in the equipment back in and grab a beer with Jay. They had always been close but since she came home from New York their relationship had taken a turn. There is something about being 800 miles apart that really brings people closer together. They started with texting each other which turned into phone calls which turned into facetime calls. Talking about their jobs turned into talking about their day which turned into flirting and talking about their feelings which only continued when she got home. They were almost there; so close to becoming something more and Hailey really wanted to get there.
"Blondie," called Platt as they walked through the doors. Jay tosses the trash in the bin and grabs the duffle from Hailey telling her that he will meet her upstairs.
"What's up sarg?" Hailey asks leaning on the front desk.
" Your sister is here" responds Platt and nods towards the bench.
" I don't have a sister," she responds
" Well then cousin or daughter or clone," sassed Platt, "I don't really care who she is, just get her out of here she has been sitting in my lobby all day."
Hailey sighs and walks over to the girl sizing her up. She was young, maybe 10 or 11, with blond wavy hair. She was wearing clothes that looked both too big and too small at the same time. She just sat there reading the newspaper and swinging her legs. Her head jerked up as Hailey alerted her to her presence beside her. Hailey was met with bright blue eyes as the kid pushed her unruly hair out of her face.
Maybe this kid does kinda look like me thinks Hailey.
"Are you Hailey Upton?" questioned the girl without hesitation.
"I am," responded Hailey, "who are you?"
"I'm Beth," the kid started as she tried and failed to fold up the newspaper, "I'm 13 years old. I know I don't look 13 but I'm just really small for my age."
" Okay Beth who is 13" replied Hailey, "what brings you here today?"
" You," Beth states as if it is an obvious fact as she wrestles with the newspaper.
Hailey starts to get annoyed. It has been a really long day and she was getting hangry. She had only eaten a small bag of chips and some dried mango since before leaving her house this morning. She grabs the newspaper from Beth's hand and tosses it on the bench beside her.
" Kid," Hailey sighs, "why are you here?"
" When you turn 13 and you are in the foster care program without a long term foster family you can have access to your file and whatever your file might say about your biological family…" explaines Beth.
" Kid, get to the point." explaimes Hailey really annoyed now.
" I think you are my biological mother," states Beth. Hailey's eyes go wide and shakes her head.
" That can't be right," says Hailey.
" It says here in my file," Beth says as she reaches into her backpack that was sitting on the ground, " There isn't a lot in here, not even my dad's name. But your name is here and that you gave me up for adoption when I was born."
" Sorry kid but you are wrong or the file must be wrong because I don't have a kid. Go home okay, it is getting late." Hailey says as she starts to walk away.
"But.." Beth starts to say but she gets interrupted by Hailey.
"Go home kid, someone will start to worry about you."
Hailey walks up the stairs and doesn't look back to see if the girl actually leaves or not. She knows that she just lied to the kid but there was no way that this kid was the baby from 13 years ago. It's impossible.
Hailey walks into the bullpen and sees Jay sitting at her desk checking facebook.
" What was that about?" he asks as she walks into the locker room with him following.
" Nothing really, just some kid playing a prank." she replies, opening her locker to grab her bag.
Jay shrugs it off and moves on.
"Want to grab a pizza, some beer and watch the hawks game?"
" Not tonight" Hailey says, " I'm really tired and I just want to crawl into bed."
Jay looks up from his phone and gives her a confused face. Jay knows that she already has a hard time falling asleep and the fact that she was cooped up in the van all day not getting any exercise would make it even harder.
" Are you sure? Are you feeling okay?" questions Jay.
" Ya, I'm okay just a bit of a headache," Hailey lies as she shuts her locker and heads out.
They walk into the lobby and Platt calls Hailey over again. Hailey pretends not to hear her and just quickens her pace out the door. Jay stops and looks over at Platt getting more confused by the minute. Hailey was not one to straight out ignore someone. Platt motions to Jay and he walks over to her desk.
"Give this to Hailey," she says, handing Jay a file.
"What is this about?" he asks as he opens the file. He looks at the picture of the girl who looks exactly like a younger version of Hailey.
Elizabeth Upton
DOB: May 17th, 2007
Age: 13
Gender: Female
Status: Foster care - group home
There was a sticky note one the page with a phone number and an address stuck to the page.
He looks up at Trudy who shrugs and said,
" The girl seemed pretty sure,"
"Okay, I'll talk to Hailey," responds Jay.
He closes the file and walks out of the district. He hops in his truck and dials Hailey's number and it goes straight to voicemail. He sets down his phone and drives to the corner store. He picks up a bottle of Hailey's favourite tequila, knowing that she was going to need the strong stuff tonight and then makes his way to her house. He knocks on the door but she doesn't answer. He bangs again calling out,
" Hailey I know you are in there your car is parked out front,"
He bangs on her door a third time.
" We should really talk about this," he yells through the door, "Come on Hailey, I brought tequila."
Still no answer. He sighs and sets the tequila on her doorstep. He gets back in his truck and sends her a text message.
Hey, I can't imagine what is going through your head right now but I am here to talk when you need to. I have the girl's file for when you are ready. Day or night okay?
PS I left the tequila on your front step.
Hailey hears Jay get back in his truck while she is sitting on her couch legs pulled up to her chest. She sees her phone light up and she looks over at it. She smiles at his text. She gets up from her spot and opens the door. She grabs the bottle and looks at Jay in his truck idling on her driveway. They make eye contact for a quick second before she shuts her door. Jay takes a deep breath and puts his tuck in reverse and leaves. Hailey pours herself a big glass as she hears his truck go down the street.
