Ok so this little Upstead fic comes to you straight from twitter. It came based off of a fake conversation between Hailey and Jay and how they would describe how they ended up as a couple. So full credit to that conversation goes to mooredevitto and the girl in the comments saying this needed to be made into a fic. I've needed a distraction latley, so I wanted to give it a go.
Hopefully you all like! Please drop a review, they always make my day. Plus, I spent 4 days working on this haha.
"Fresh brewed coffee, a hot man cooking breakfast and the girls aren't killing each other?" Hailey asks in disbelief as she rounds the corner to the kitchen. She glances past where Jay was standing at the stove making French toast into the living room where she sees her two daughters watching Frozen on the couch in silence. Hailey reaches up, wrapping her arms around her husband's tall frame from behind, and rests her forehead to his bare back. "Marry me Jay Halstead."
"Sorry lady," He laughs, flipping the two pieces of bread in front of him. "I'm already married, and boy is she crazy."
Dropping her arms from around him, Hailey meets him with a smack to the shoulder. This earns another chuckle from Jay. "You're not funny."
"DADDY IS TOO FUNNY!" Three-year-old Kennedy shouts, shooting to stand up and peek at her parents over the back of the couch. "HE'S THE FUNNIEST EVER!
Jay turns to Hailey with a smirk while Hailey rolls her eyes. No surprise Kennedy would stick up for her dad, she was a classic daddy's girl. "Thank you, baby girl," Jay says shooting his youngest daughter a wink, to which she cackles in return before jumping to sit back down and watch her movie. "Kid's got my back."
"You could say the sky was purple and green polka dotted and that girl would agree with you." She laughs rolling her eyes again.
Knowing it was true, Jay laughs in return before reaching over and picking up her coffee mug. He hands it to her, and her smile widens. "Decaf, three cream, two sugars." He smiles as he watches her take a huge gulp.
"You're the best." She mutters leaning up to press her lips to his. She moans softly as he snakes his arm around her and pulls her as close to him as he can with her 9-month pregnant belly between them. "Mm, good morning Sergeant."
He smiles against her lips. "Good morning beautiful." His hand then drops to her stomach. "And good morning to you little man."
Eleven-year-old Logan comes down the stairs into the kitchen about that time, and groans in disgust at the sight of his parents' lip locked. "Can you two not do that so early? Or at all?" He mutters, plopping down at the kitchen table.
Hailey rolls her eyes as she takes her seat next to her son, while Jay pats his son's shoulder before walking back to the stove. "Believe me bud, you'll understand one day."
"Can we not think about that!" Hailey says, her eyes going wide. "He's my baby, he doesn't need a girlfriend" She says reaching over and wrapping her arms around his neck and hugging her to him. Logan tries to wiggle his way out of her embrace. "Not until you're thirty sir."
"Whatever," he grumbles having gotten out of her grip. He turns his attention to the plate of French toast his father had just placed in front of him.
Jay walks into the living room, pausing the TV. Both Kennedy, and six-year-old Ellie shout in protest but quiets down when he holds his hand up. "Breakfast, let's go." He says pointing to the table. Ellie groans in disapproval as she makes her way to the table while Kennedy reaches up for her father. Unable to deny his little girl, he picks her up in his arms and carries her over to her seat between him and her sister.
"You know what today is?" Hailey asks, glancing to Jay. She passes Kennedy's cut up French toast to him and he places it in front of the little girl.
"Sunday?" He asks, raising his coffee cup to his lips. He smirks over the brim of his cup, as she glares at him. "I'm kidding. Of course, I know what today is. Twelve years ago today you made me the happiest man alive for marrying my sorry ass."
"LANGUAGE DADDY!" Kennedy shouts, mouth full of French toast. This causes the whole table to laugh, as Jay reaches over to wipe the syrup from around her mouth.
"Sorry Kenny, "He laughs before turning to his wife. "Happy anniversary baby," He says leaning over and giving her another soft kiss. "It's been the greatest twelve years of my life," He says truthfully.
His life had changed drastically, for the better, almost thirteen years ago to the day when he and Hailey had decided to give them a real go. They were not together six months and Jay had already asked her to marry him. Everyone thought he was crazy, but he just knew. They got married just three days after their one-year anniversary. Almost a year later, after enduring a heart-breaking miscarriage, Hailey gave birth to their oldest son Tyler. Their sassy Ellie joined the family four and a half years later, before rounding out their family with sweet Kennedy three years later. They were happy and content, until 9 months ago when a drunken night at the Chicago Policeman's ball left them expecting baby number four. Their happy little uh-oh baby. He was due any day, and the couple could not wait to meet him.
"Mine too," Hailey says pressing her lips to his one last time. The couple pulls back, their eyes locked and Hailey reaches up, running her hand along the scruffiness of the beard Jay had been rocking as of late. It was rare he did, but she loved it when he did. She often begged him to keep it. To her it just made him even more handsome. "I love you."
"I love you more." He says shooting her a quick wink. Her stomach does a flip at the sight. She absolutely loved everything this man did.
"Mommy? Daddy?" Hailey and Jay turn to look at Ellie, who unlike her siblings, was watching their every move. "How did you guys get together?"
Unable to put it in words, Hailey turns to look at Jay.
Jay looks from Hailey to his daughter and decides not to sugar coat it. His children knew what their mom and dad did for a living and were very understanding of the dangers as they have all grown up in the 21st. They knew their mom and dad fought daily to come home to them. "I almost died 12 times, and your mother just couldn't resist me anymore."
Hailey smacks Jay's arm as all three of their children look up at him with wide eyes. "Jay explain,"
Jay cannot help but laugh at his children's faces. "Okay, okay."
"Look when you were in surgery, it made me realize something."
"Okay," Jay trails off, his eyes scanning her face. Her eyes were wide but held concern as she looked back up at him. Just the tone of her voice, the seriousness, made his heart beat like crazy. He had a feeling he knew where Hailey was taking this conversation and suddenly, he could not wait to hear the words leave her mouth. The same words he had been too chicken to admit himself.
Just as Hailey opens her mouth to speak, his phone rings. He silently curses before making his way over to the bed and grabbing the burner he had been using for his undercover mission and pulls it out.
BOBBY.
"It's Angela's son."
"Jay!" He could hear the sternness in her voice and that causes him to turn and look at her as he still held the phone.
"I just want to make sure he's okay. "
"Jay, he's fine. He's with his mom." Jay starts to argue but Hailey cuts him off. "Jay, you caught a bullet for this one. I think it's time you let it go."
Jay stays silent for a moment, but ultimately decides she is right. He lays the phone back down and walks back over to where she stood. "What uh, what were you going to say?"
Hailey looks up at him, into his beautiful hopeful eyes. She knew he knew what she was going to say, and she could have sworn she saw a glimmer in his eyes. She debated for a moment whether she was really going to go there, or if she had just gotten caught up in the situation at hand. He had almost died… and she was simply scared. Yeah, that is it. "Uh nothing. I'm going to go get the car." And then she turns around and walks out before she can double back and spill it all.
Jay watches her walk away and slumps in defeat.
Hailey liked her sleep. And given the circumstances of the last four days, she had not had a lot of it until tonight. Even though she had known Jay had pulled through surgery and was going to be ok, she just couldn't let herself fall asleep and stay that way. Not until she had brought him home from the hospital and dropped him off at his place. She was hesitant about leaving him, but he was being watched under the careful eye of his brother, who had since moved in with Jay after breaking it off with Natalie. Knowing he was home and safe, and Will was around, was the ultimate comfort she had needed to come home tonight and crash.
That was until she had woken up to someone banging on her door at 1:30 in the morning. Now she was furious as she makes her way through her dimly lit apartment to her door, her gun at her hip, because you never know what kind of idiot is on the other side of that door this late. She reaches up and peeks through the peep hole.
"Oh, you have got to be kidding me!" She exclaims dropping her gun and yanking the door open. "Damn it Halstead, what the hell are you doing here this late?" She rumbles on as she takes in his disheveled appearance. He was sporting the same pair of sweatpants she had awkwardly helped him into when he got home, a t shirt, and that uncomfortable looking sling he had to sport for the next six weeks. His hair was a mess, almost like he had been asleep, but his blood shot eyes gave it away that he had not. He looked like a total mess but seeing him standing there in front of her was a welcoming sight. She had almost lost him. "Wait it's late, are you ok?!" She quickly runs her eyes up and down him looking for something to be wrong. Panic suddenly flooded her.
"Hails, I'm fine. Now, can I come in or what?" She nods and steps back letting him in the apartment. He turns and watches her as she locks her door and lays her gun on the foyer table. "Jesus Hailey, you were going to shoot me?" He tries to say this with a small laugh to ease the mood, but obviously with no luck.
"That's not even funny," She says pushing past him and further into her kitchen to get a bottle of water out of her fridge. She places one on the counter in front of him, and he nods in thanks. "I was getting ready to light up whatever idiot was banging on my door at almost 2 in the morning."
"Fair point," he says leaning against her kitchen island. "I'm sorry it's so late, I've just been thinking." Hailey brings the water to her lips, and raises an eyebrow telling him to continue. "About that conversation we almost had at the hospital earlier. I think I know what you were going –"
"Jay, stop."
"I love you too Hailey."
"Wait, what?" She was in total disbelief. Of course, she had almost expected his answer. Just about anyone around them could tell the two were crazy about each other… but it was different hearing him say it to her.
Jay could not help but to chuckle at the look on Hailey's face. He watches as she goes through every emotion as she tries to process what he had just said. He makes his way around the island and walks toward her, his smile growing the closer he got to her. She does not say a word, but just watches him as he moves to stand in front of her. She watches as he reaches up with his good arm and cups her face in his hand. The next thing she knows, he's crashing his lips to hers.
The instant their lips met; it was over for the both of them. They both knew they had found their one true match in life. They had spent the better part of the last two years denying the fact that they had this chemistry, this spark. Now it was clear they would never be able to go without one another.
The two pull away from a lack of oxygen moments later, and Jay rests his forehead against hers. His smile was a mile wide, and Hailey was giggling like a schoolgirl. "Oh my god, that just happened." She muttered.
Jay chuckles. "Yeah, it did." He leans back and reaches up to push a strand of blond hair out of her face and smiles down at her. "What are you thinking right now?"
"That I love you." She says smiling up at him, and his heart does a somersault in his chest. "I love you so damn much," She exclaims before she reaches up and wraps her arm around his neck. She then pulls him down to her and crashes her lips to his again.
"Ewwwwwwwwww!" Three-year-old Kennedy exclaims from her seat as she jumps up to sit on her knees in her seat. She scrunches her nose up in disgust at her parents and the two can't help but laugh.
"I could have gone my whole life without hearing that story," Logan says standing up and taking his plate to the sink.
"Well your sister asked," Hailey says looking to Jay. She smiles up at him lovingly. Even after thirteen years, she still gets butterflies in her stomach when she thinks of that night. "And your dad just told you the truth." She says patting his knee. He reaches down and grabs her hand, bringing it to his lips. He kisses it softly.
"Well I think it's ROMANTIC." Ellie says, beaming at her parents. Forever their little love bug, she smiles as she watches her father gently kiss her mother's hand. She was their dreamer, their fairy tell reader, and their future hopeless romantic. She would definitely have Jay gray in just a few short years.
Both Jay and Hailey burst out in laughter. There was truly never a dull moment with their kids. "Ellie bug, do you even know what romantic means?" Hailey asks their daughter.
She rolls her eyes and jumps down from her chair. "DUH MOMMY!" And with that, she runs off toward the staircase.
Hating the fact that both of her siblings were now done and gone form the table, Kennedy turns to her dad. "Daddy, can I get down too?"
"Eat two more bites for me," he says reaching over and taking her little fork. He helps her, and as soon as she swallows her last bite, she starts bouncing in her seat. Jay chuckles and picks her up, before sitting her on the ground. She runs off toward the stairs after her brother and sister.
"And then there were two," Hailey says turning to him.
"Just the way I like it," he says reaching under the table and grabbing a small bag before handing it to her.
"Jay!" She exclaims. "We said we weren't doing gifts this year with everything going on."
"I lied." He shrugs, and she rolls her eyes before opening the bag. She pulls out a small box and her eyes water when they land on the beautiful mother's ring, he had bought her. It held four tiny stones, each a different color as they each represented each child's birthstone. Knowing this last baby would be born in October, Jay had been able to go ahead and order the ring for her in time for their anniversary. "I remembered you talking about how much you loved your grandmother's and if anyone deserves one of these, it's you."
"It's beautiful," She says slipping the ring on her slightly swollen finger. It was a little tight, but she knew after the baby was here, it would be the perfect fit. She leans over, taking his face in both hands and she smiles up at him. "I love you,"
"I love you too," He says leaning down and pecking her lips.
"I didn't get you anything."
This causes Jay to chuckle. "You've given me plenty. You've given me a whole life, happiness, a house… and three annoying children." He adds the last bit as they hear the girls arguing upstairs and Logan yelling at them to shut up. They both laugh. "Seriously, I hope this one is our calm baby." He says, his hand resting on her stomach. He gets a swift kick back in return and he smirks. "See, he says he's going to be the good one."
Hailey throws her head back, letting out a laugh. "If you say so."
"Babe, you ready to go?" Jay asks walking into their master bathroom. He smiles at the sight of his beautiful wife. Her blonde hair was curled down her back, her make up done to match the blue flowy dress she had decided to wear. He knew being so far into her pregnancy that she didn't feel good and did not want to mess with getting all done up, but he thought she deserved a nice dinner out just the two of them. "Adam and Kim and the kids just got here."
She watches him in the mirror as he walks up behind her, wrapping his arm around her, and placing a hand on her stomach. He smiles as his son kicks him. She reaches up to fasten her earring as he places a kiss on her bare shoulder. "You look so beautiful."
"Thank you, babe" She says leaning back into him and enjoying the moment. She lets out a small moan when he moves his hand to her lower back and begins to message the one spot, he knows has been bothering her.
Jay looks up at her in the mirror and smirks. "Save that for later."
Hailey rolls her eyes but laughs none the less. She moves out of his embrace and smacks his shoulder. "As if you want that with me right now."
"Baby, I always want you." With the look he was giving her, and the hoarseness of his voice as he said that Hailey has to fight the urge to cancel the whole night and stay in.
"Come on, the sooner we go to dinner the sooner we can get back here." She says reaching down and grabbing his hand. She pulls him to the door as he laughs.
An hour later Jay and Hailey had just finished dinner when the waiter walks back up to the table. "Will we be having desert?" Jay glances from the waiter to his wife. Hailey had her head already buried in the dessert menu, causing Jay to chuckle. Pregnant Hailey and sweets went hand in hand each time.
Hailey closes the menu and hands it to the waiter. "Actually no, thank you." He nods and walks off to get their check. Hailey turns to Jay, and he meets her with a raised brow.
"Damn Hails, are you feeling okay?" He asks, only joking.
"I mean honestly I would kill for a slice of that chocolate cheesecake right now, but we have to go." Again, Jay stays silent and stares at her in confusion. Kim and Adam had brought their two daughters to play with the girls, so he knew they were set for at least another two hours. "Jay, my water just broke."
Jay glances down, and then back at his wife. "Shit Hails," This time his laughter grows, and she shoots him a dirty look as he stands to help her up. "I'm just saying can we have one kid enter this world undramatically,"
Hailey allows Jay to help her up before he throws a couple bills on the table to cover their dinner. She laughs at his statement.
It was true. Her water had broken with Tyler while she was alone in the bullpen. Everyone else had been out working a case, while she was on desk duty because she had been too stubborn to take a leave. She had Ellie 3 months early after having some spotting. She spent the next three months in the NICU but ultimately fought like hell. With Kennedy her water had broke when Jay was deep undercover. He had been gone at least two weeks when it happened. With her due dating closing in, neither Hailey nor Jay had been happy about the assignment but with his military background he was their only choice to send under. When her water did break, they had to pull Jay from the op, ultimately blowing up the case, but Adam got him to the hospital just in time for Hailey to begin pushing.
Their children's entrances to this world were never normal and this time was no different as they sat in the middle of a fancy downtown restaurant on their anniversary. "Come on babe," He says leading her to the door. They meet their waiter almost to the door and he nods to their table. "It's on the table, her water just broke."
The young guy's eyes widen. "Do we need to call an ambulance?"
"No need, thanks." He says ushering her out the door and helping her into his truck. He shuts the door and runs to the drivers side door. The truck roars to life as he flips on his lights for good measure. He then speeds off toward med.
Hailey lays her head back on the rest and tries to breathe her way through a particularly hard contraction. She turns to glance at her husband as she feels his hand slip in hers.
Jay glances between her and the road as he drives. He offers her a smile before bringing her hand to his lips. He places a kiss above her ring, and she smiles. "I love you,"
"I love you more, but no more kids. You're done." Jay chuckles at her statement as her face scrunches up in pain from another contraction.
"I promise babe,"
Once Hailey and Jay had arrived at Med, she was whisked upstairs to labor and delivery. After a quick check Hailey was already dilated 10. She had only been dilated 3 a week prior at her check- up. With this being her fourth delivery, the Doctor wasn't surprised, and they prepped her for delivery.
Jay hardly had time to call Kim and Adam and let them know what was going on before he was being called back in the room for Hailey to push. Kim had told them to not worry. Adam would take their two home for bed and she would stay with their kids. Within the hour, they were parents again.
The next morning, Hailey was lying in bed feeding her son when the door swings open and in runs both Ellie and Kennedy. Logan follows along behind them along with Adam and Kim.
"I wanna see my baby brother!" Kennedy shouts, trying to climb the bed. Jay grabs her just in time and swoops her up, as the adults laugh.
"Easy there trigger," He rests her on his hip and pushes a strand of her dark curly hair out of her face. "Your brother is eating, and your momma is sore. We got to be careful okay?" He quietly explains to his three-year-old. He knew she was super eager to meet her sibling. She had been since the day her parents had told her, much to their surprise. They had figured she would have a hard time adjusting.
With wide eyes Kennedy looks from her father to her mom. "Sorry mommy,"
Hailey smiles up at her daughter. "It's okay baby. I know you're excited."
"We're SO excited!" Exclaims Ellie, as she moves closer to her mother. She stands up on her tippy toes trying to get a good look.
Hailey wraps her arm around Ellie's shoulders as Jay stands behind her with Kennedy still in his arms. Hailey then motions for Tyler to join them, and he stands next to his dad. "Guys, this is your baby brother Rhett,"
Both Ellie and Kennedy 'ohh' and 'aww' over him, and both Hailey and Jay swear they even see Logan crack a smile at the sight of his newest sibling. And right as Jay opens his mouth to speak, the group was interrupted by another cry on the other side of Hailey's bed. They all look around confused as Jay hands Kennedy to Adam, before walking around the bed. He leans down and carefully scoops up another baby out of the bassinet next to Hailey's bed.
"Wait a minute, what is going on?" Adam asks, as Kim watches silently confused.
"Who is that?" Kennedy asks from her uncle Adam's arms.
"This," Jay says looking down at the baby in his arms. He rocks back and forth slowly in an attempt to stop the cries before making his way back over to where his wife and children all waited. "Is your new baby sister Isabella."
"Wait so there's two of them?" Logan asks at the same time Kim finally finds her tongue and speaks as well.
"So, twins?" She asks glancing to her best friend laying in the hospital bed. She was met with a nod from Hailey.
"Mommy, I'm confused." Ellie says looking to her mom. "You said we were only getting one baby."
Jay moves to sit on the foot of Hailey's bed, still cradling his newborn daughter in his arms. "We know baby girl. We only knew of one baby, but it looks like these two were playing hide and seek the whole time."
"Isabella was hiding behind Rhett the whole time. We never once saw her during any ultrasound." She says talking over the kids heads to Adam and Kim. All three of her children were standing between her and Jay in amazement.
"Damn Halstead," Adam says clapping Jay's shoulder. "You got a whole basketball team now,"
"Tell me about it," Jay chuckles looking to his wife. She smiles up at him in return. Nothing about their relationship or the life they had built had been normal, but they loved every crazy moment. And they loved each and every one of these kids with everything fiber of their beings.
"It's a good thing we never got rid of Kenny's seat or clothes," Hailey laughs and Jay nods. "We were totally prepared for this little cutie," She says leaning down and placing a kiss on her son's forehead before looking up at the baby in Jay's arms. "But that little stinker threw us all for one."
About that time the door swings open and in comes the rest of their crazy family. Will moves to the opposite side of the bed, hoisting his niece up in his arms as Ellie had ran to him. She was definitely Uncle Will's girl. Nat moves to stand next to him. The two had been in the ER the night before when Hailey had come in, in labor. They spent the night in the lobby waiting for the news.
Voight comes in, with Kevin and Vanessa in tow. The three stands at the foot of the bed and Vanessa's eyes widen as she looks from Hailey to Jay. Hailey's smirk grows as she watches her ultimate best friend wrap her head around the sight in front of her.
"Umm guys, why do I see two babies?!" She exclaims, her voice nearing a shriek.
Atwater wraps his arm around her and pulls her into him as little Rhett squirms in his mom's arms at the sound. Ultimately both babies stay asleep. "Baby girl, there's babies here." He says laughing at his girlfriend.
"You seriously need to learn to keep it in your pants Halstead," Voight mutters earning an eye roll from Jay. "I've always said that."
"Ness, you might want to sit down for this one," Hailey says, earning a laugh from the room.
Alright guys, there it is. I hope you all enjoyed... and you know I could not resist slapping these two adorable goofballs with 5 kids lmao. It was different, honestly sounded like a hot mess I wanted to see.
Thoughts on a sequel? In the daily life of this Halstead family?
