Both Adrien and Marinette froze when they heard Plagg's nasally outburst. They were just thankful that he sounded closer to them than he was to Alya.
Adrien's wide eyes connected with Marinette's panicked blue and the blonde had a sudden, posssibly crazy, idea. He whispered as silently as possible-
"Guys? Are you awake?"
"Pretend to be asleep."
"Adrien? Was that-awww look Nino…" Alya cooed from the opening of the teepee. Marinette could feel their best friends' eyes on them as they lay facing each other with the covers pulled up around them. The ravenette was struggling to keep a straight face under their gaze. "They're cuddling!"
"Who's voice was that?"
As if on cue, because it most certainly was, Adrien stirred in his 'sleep' and scrunched his face up, making sure to put on his best Plagg impression as possible. "...give me my cheese!"
"You know what dude…" Nino chuckled tiredly, "that explains a lot!"
"What?" Alya questioned, "what on earth does Adrien sleep talking explain?"
"No babe," Nino explained with a yawn, "dude smells like cheese like all the time, even though he has like, four showers a day."
"Oh…"
It took all of Marinette's strength and determination to not burst out laughing at her partner's imitation of the tiny black being who had spoken so abruptly when Alya had interrupted them. She stilled and tensed in her quest to not be discovered by her best friend however, and Adrien's fingers laced with hers under the covers as she did. Marinette could feel her face heating up, and the teen was not sure if it was because Adrien was still close enough that their noses were touching, or the fact that they had almost been caught.
'I'm buying Alya a bell for her birthday!'
Alya suddenly, but very quietly, squeaked excitedly, and Marinette was sure her best friend was bouncing with glee. "She even blushes in her sleep, Nino!"
"Shhh babe," he chuckled again, "why don't we get our heads down, something tells me we're gonna have a busy day tomorrow."
"You're right," the blogger sighed, "but I don't think we can get in there, I never realised how long Mister Model's legs are!"
Adrien snorted and covered it with a dramatic breath as he shifted his position slightly. Marinette was sure he had purposefully positioned himself in such a way that appeared there was less room than there actually was: it was not like the couple did not have anywhere else to sleep though. Marinette probably would have felt guilty when she heard their friends shuffling across the room, but the teen heroine could not bring herself to care at that moment:
She was finally in the arms of the blonde that held her heart.
As the blogger and DJ's tired footsteps lazily retreated to what the blonde and ravenette assumed was Adrien's bed, Marinette's eyes slowly fluttered open to gaze at the young man currently holding her. His green orbs shone with complete love and adoration and Marinette could not help but smile lovingly at him. They stayed like that, having a silent conversation filled with coy smiles, nose bumping and soft blushes while their exhausted friends drifted off to sleep. The sounds of their soft snores began to fill the otherwise quiet room, and the two Parisian heroes instantly relaxed.
Marinette giggled and Adrien bit his lip as they melted into each other's arms.
Adrien whispered and his cheeks darkened considerably. "There's something I'd really like to do."
"Then what are you waiting for?" Marinette whispered back with a poorly hidden smile.
Tentatively, the tiny space between them closed and the two Parisian teenage heroes finally found their soft lips connecting. What began as gentle caresses against each other, while they carefully tested the waters, soon turned into a loving and fully connected embrace. Holding each other gently, they allowed their bodies to convey what their words could not, and once they had become acquainted with each other on a new level, the two love birds drifted off into a restful slumber. Entwined completely, the two heroes of Paris had the best night's sleep since they had become the city's saviours: without a care about what the next day would bring as they had finally found each other.
Sabine Cheng sat stewing that night. The baker's wife got no sleep at all.
She was not very well versed in the usage of social media, but the post that Lila shared had been sent to her by her good friend Nadja Chamack. The broadcaster had been asked to cover the story and had requested that she be given time to contact the other two parties who were named for comment: her boss gave her twelve hours.
Nadja was not convinced that Miss Rossi's post was telling any truth as she knew Marinette personally, so contacting Sabine was only natural to forewarn the petite woman. Sabine had already been made aware though by another who had silenced her. Before Nadja had been in touch, Gabriel Agreste had asked the protective mother to keep schtum so they could act through appropriate channels and not provide any information for media propaganda.
Sabine was doing as she was asked, but there was another person who had contacted her that day.
A mutual friend of her daughter and Adrien had requested that they could come and stay with them to give the lying Italian the biggest shock of her life; how could she refuse?
Keeping this surprise to herself was the only thing that prevented Sabine from heading to the Rossi's home and giving the two Italians a piece of her mind. As far as Sabine was concerned, Lila's mother was just as responsible for all this turmoil as her lying, good-for-nothing daughter. The baker's wife was bitter. Marinette had been put through hell and back by that girl, and now Adrien was also being subjected to her harassment…
The Asian woman was just happy that Gabriel was finally doing something about it, and acting as a father should. For too long her and Tom had worried about Adrien: he was such a lovely young man and he obviously missed his mother greatly. Often, Sabine had caught Adrien watching the loving exchanges between Marinette and herself: only the night prior, the blonde had been gazing at the pictures on the wall with a wistful expression. To her, it was obvious he was wanting the normality that their family had.
'At least Gabriel is working on it now,' she sighed to herself as sleep continued to evade her, 'and if him and Marinette finally pair up then he will officially have us too,'
Sabine tossed and turned for the remainder of the night and got up earlier than usual to prepare Marinette's room for their guest who would be arriving that day. If there was one thing the woman was certain of, it was that their new arrival's testimony should be taken seriously, and would hopefully be another piece to finally getting justice for her daughter and Adrien.
As Gabriel closed his eyes to have a quick break from staring at his computer, his mind wandered to that of his wife. Slipping into a slumber, the image of Emilie Agreste in his mind caused a depressed smile to grace his face. As her green eyes glowed with the happiness that radiated from them, her long blonde hair blew gently around her face. She was just as beautiful as he always remembered her.
"Do you remember this my love?"
As her hands gestured outwards, the scene surrounding them both changed to that of an open field with long grasses and leafy hedges on the outskirts. There was not a cloud in the sky as Gabriel found himself standing in a white linen shirt and sand coloured slacks, his mind almost refusing to acknowledge the casual pumps on his feet, but they were there. His wife had a beautiful blue and white floral dress cascading loosely around her body, and as Emilie turned away from him, Gabriel's eyes landed on the two blonde boys they had decided to take on a picnic on that sunny Sunday afternoon.
"We had so much fun that day."
The designer felt his feet moving closer to where Adrien and Felix had set up their toy cars on the picnic blanket, and with his wife's hand on his shoulder, the man knelt down and automatically picked up one of the plastic vehicles; the way Adrien's face lit up as the child looked towards him caused his heart to pang with longing.
Gabriel could remember this.
It was an afternoon pushed deep down in his memories, but he could remember.
Glancing back to a lovingly smiling Emilie, the no longer greying man saw her taking a picture of the father and son together on the red and white checkered blanket.
"Say cheese!"
The camera clicked and Gabriel awoke to the dark office with a tear on his cheek.
"I will always be with you my love, Adrien needs you, please do not shut him out."
The echoed words swam around the weary designer's head and he felt a lump in his throat as another tear escaped his eyes. His wonderful wife had spoken those words to him not long before she slipped into her coma when they had been discussing what the future would hold if she was no longer around.
Emilie was right.
Adrien did need him and all the ageing designer had managed to do for hi son was keep him at arm's length while not giving him the freedom to grow. he had allowed his son to become the subject of harassment, and even as it got worse, Adrien had not felt comfortable enough to come to him. The enlightened father had little time to ponder his now obvious mistakes however, as he felt a familiar pull.
Gabriel could feel his Miraculous warm in its place on his person, but the emotion was not one that he would generally want to feel. The feeling of love and compassion, that tingled his senses, was one that reminded him so much of how his time was with Emilie, that he just had to find out where it was coming from.
"Nooroo…"
"I am here," the tiny being appeared, "I do not think you need to transform to find out who it is you are feeling."
Wordlessly, Gabriel stood up and exited his office with Nooroo close behind him. The man climbed the staircase silently and headed for Adrien's room, turning the knob as quietly as possible so as to not disturb the room's inhabitants. Taking soft steps, he glanced quickly at the couple cuddling on the bed and reached the teepee without hesitation; what he saw warmed his heart and required him to wipe more escaped tears from his eyes.
Adrien and Marinette were sound asleep next to each other, the smile resting on his son's face was the same as Emilie's, and Gabriel knew he had everything he needed right there. His son, Adrien, was the one who could heal his heart, and letting go of Emilie was not something he was required to do: She was always with him.
They had known about Emilie's illness, it had been present in their lives before Adrien had been born. Since the illness had been given a high chance of returning with no further treatment, Gabriel had sought out ways in which he could ensure his wife would live a long and prosperous life. That was how they stumbled upon the legend of the magical Jewellery in the remote mountains of Tibet: the trail had led them to a shady man who dealt in even shadier transactions.
All that time he had been focused on trying to save his wife, Gabriel now realised that he should have been spending that time making memories with her and Adrien. They knew if her illness came back that it would not be treatable, and the use of the broken Peacock Miraculous had only brought it on sooner.
'And now poor Nathalie is suffering the effects… I am a fool to have squandered my time.'
Full with regret and remorse, Gabriel left the room having finally made the decision to hang up his wings for good. There would be no more Hawkmoth, there would be no more Akumas, and there would be no more attempts to save his wife. As the last of his tears fell, the words of his wife echoed through his mind once more.
"You will have to let me go Gabriel, this is not working my love."
"But I cannot-"
"You must. We have a son who will need his father when the time comes, and you must promise me that you will put his happiness and well-being before anything else."
Gabriel sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose as he finally found his way to his bed.
'Enough.'
And we are finally finished with Sunday! Adrien and Marinette have finally had their kiss! And there is a surprise guest coming to see them :)
