1. #GirlAtThePool
As soon as Remus Lupin returned to his flat from work, wiping the sweat off his forehead, he switched on the A.C. It was 77 degrees that April day in Los Angeles, California, hot and humid. He was surprised to find his roommate, Reggie, actually at a computer. Though he was a web developer, Reggie never spent time on his work. He was always playing games or trying to impress girls.
"What are you doing?" Remus asked, peeking at the computer screen.
"It's called Fortnite," Reggie answered, clicking furiously at his keyboard.
"You do realize that's your work computer, right?" Remus asked, throwing his bag onto a table and plopping down onto the couch. "They can monitor everything you do on there."
"They're not going to be watching right now," Reggie said, banging the space bar.
"You idiot," Remus muttered. "It's sweltering in here."
"I know."
"Then why didn't you turn on the A.C.? You literally work from home!"
"I know, but Fortnite!"
Remus rolled his eyes.
Remus was the chief financial officer at a rising pharmaceutical company, which meant he was trying to increase the company's revenue and decrease their costs. The job demanded different things from him: sometimes, he was asked to go into the building, and sometimes, he could work from home.
Remus and Reggie had been roommates for a year now. Remus, being a CFO, was frugal in nature when it came to spending. Reggie loved splurging on anything and everything he could buy. Remus was organized; Reggie was a disaster. But they were still somehow best friends.
"Okay, I crashed," Reggie announced, shutting his computer.
"About time," Remus muttered.
"Can we do something?" Reggie asked, lifting his feet and putting them on the table.
"Get your feet off the table," Remus instructed. "And it depends on what you have in mind."
"Can we go somewhere?" Reggie offered, taking his feet off the table. "Like, to the pool?"
"There are going to be a ton of people there," Remus told him. "Remember? It's so darn hot outside."
"Well, then, that's great!" Reggie exclaimed. "There are gonna be lots of girls too, right?"
"It's not a surprise you're still single," Remus muttered. "Well, I guess we can go to the pool. But I'm not swimming."
"Why not?"
"Because. I don't want to." He had always been a little self-conscious about showing off his body to people.
"No, you're just ashamed that you don't have any good swimming trunks," Reggie told him. "Dude, I can lend you some! Seriously!"
"No thanks," Remus said. "Why don't you go get changed, and we can head out."
"Sounds good." Reggie hopped out of the room.
For all his frugality, Remus did have a car; it was a silver Lexus. Reggie had always dreamt of owning a Lamborghini, but he was nowhere close to having the money for it. The pool was pretty close by, though; it was just behind the apartment complex, and Reggie always insisted they walk. He was trying to be a fitness freak.
"Ready, set, let's go," Reggie shouted, appearing back in the room, wearing swimming trunks with a towel draped around his torso.
"Let's go, then," Remus said. "We can walk."
"Glad you're catching on!" Reggie said with a grin, as they walked down the stairs. They lived on the third floor of their complex's eight floor, which wasn't terrible in terms of walking up and down the stairs.
"So I met this guy today," Reggie said. "At the front office. He was looking for his shoe."
Remus snorted. "His shoe?"
"Yep. Apparently he lost it. He was jumping around on one foot looking for his other shoe."
"How could you lose a shoe and not notice?" Remus asked.
"Well, there's a lot of dumb people in this complex," Reggie sighed. "I bet if you tapped them on the back they wouldn't even notice."
"It does depend on how lightly you tap them," Remus reasoned.
"Stop being so smart." Reggie pushed open the back gate with a wave to the security guard. "What's the guard's name again?"
"Uh, I'm not sure. Wasn't it like Scott?"
"Oh. I thought it was Sam."
"I have no idea," Remus said, as they made their way towards the pool.
"Anyway, didn't they hire someone in your company?" Reggie asked. "Like, a new CEO?"
"Yeah, there was a transfer," Remus said. "New CEO, but things aren't going to change much."
"Ah. Is this new CEO a woman, by any chance?"
"No. He's a guy. Mark Reed."
"Oh. That sucks."
Remus raised an eyebrow at him.
"You know? We need more women in the workplace! Women are going to change the world! We need more woman CEOs and more women in leadership!"
"I know you didn't ask that question because of your fervent passion for the feminist movement."
"Stop being so smart! You're using big words and I don't know what they mean."
Remus rolled his eyes. "Would you like me to explain it to you in simple terms?"
"No, thanks. I bet you were insulting me, anyway. Better blissfully ignorant."
"What a big word. Where did you learn that?" He ducked as Reggie attempted to swat him.
"You are so mean," Reggie grumbled. "Hey, Felix."
"Hi, Reggie," called some guy who was walking down the street opposite them.
"How do you know that guy?" Remus asked.
"I don't know. I just remember his name is Felix."
Reggie was a super outgoing kind of person. People loved him, mostly because he was an idiot with good intentions. But he was a goofball, and that was the primary reason he was still single (and ready to mingle).
"Here we are," Remus said. "Do you want me to just wait around on a deck chair?"
"You can dip your feet in, right?" Reggie asked. "I thought you were wearing shorts."
"Yeah, sure, but I don't want to look like an idiot just sitting by the edge of the pool."
"You won't. Why don't you just check your phone? People look cool when they're doing casual things and checking their phone."
"Not a bad idea, actually. I'll do that."
"See? I'm full of good ideas."
"Shut up." They entered the pool area, which was heavily crowded. There were tons of people, both in the pool and lounging around on chairs.
"So many women," whispered Reggie. "So hot!"
"I know, I'm sure you're sweating," Remus countered. "Stop staring, they're going to notice!"
"Yes, that's the point! I want them to notice!"
"What's there to notice?"
"Stop roasting me!" Reggie made a face, threw the towel at Remus, and then jumped into the pool.
"Stop splashing!" Remus chided, moving backwards so he wouldn't be splashed with the water.
"Come on, dip your feet in!" Reggie said impatiently.
"Hold on." Remus inspected the pool edge before he sat down, dipping his feet into the water hesitantly. "I'm not sure if this is a good idea. I'm going to be splashed."
"Well, you should've been ready for this!" Reggie swam off with a splash.
"I hate you," Remus grumbled, pulling out his phone and checking his email.
People did come by and splash him, although not intentionally (but there was this one kid who looked a little too happy about it). As a result, he was soaking wet when Reggie swam by again fifteen minutes later.
"Your clothes are wet," Reggie observed. "Did you fall in?"
Remus rolled his eyes. "Do you really think I fell in? I'm sitting on the edge of the pool. Of course I'm going to be wet."
"Good point. Is this your CFO logic again?"
Remus swatted Reggie's head. "I swear to god if you bring that up again…"
"Just joking, just joking. Don't kill me, Master CFO." Reggie sprang to a mock salute and then swam off quickly.
Remus rolled his eyes, then went back to his phone and started scrolling around. Why had he even offered to accompany Reggie on his trip to the pool?
His eyes travelled to a bunch of girls at the far side of the pool, who were hanging around and chattering. He had never been crazy about women like Reggie was. Reggie always attributed Remus's status of being single to being shy, but Remus wasn't actually shy. He interacted with people all the time. He just didn't fall for every darn woman he saw.
Unlike Reggie, who was now trying to chat up a blonde woman who clearly didn't look interested.
Remus wasn't stiff. He was just a bit more practical.
Just then, Reggie swam back to where he was, panting heavily.
"How'd it go with Blondie?" Remus asked in a bored voice.
"Don't even ask," muttered Reggie. "She threatened to whack me with a stick."
"And you fled."
"Do you think I waited around to be whacked? Of course I fled." Reggie was still panting. "I'm going to take a little break."
"Suit yourself," Remus said, about to turn back to his phone, when something else caught his eye.
Or rather, someone.
She had bright pink hair, and she was wearing a matching pink two-piece. She was giggling at something her friend was saying, the laughter evident in her eyes, as she slowly, agonizingly slowly, stepped out of the pool.
Remus felt like his eyes were glued to her body. He couldn't stop staring at her. All of her. Her dark brown eyes, and her smile, and all that skin…
"Remus?" Reggie whispered. "Do you see that?"
"Hm?" He wasn't really listening.
"Do you see that girl? The one with the pink hair?"
"Mm."
Reggie shook his arm. "Remus! That girl!"
"Yes, I see her," Remus said impatiently, turning his attention back to her.
"She's pretty!"
Remus ignored him, continuing to watch the girl, who was still walking tantalizingly slowly towards a deck chair, water dripping with her every step. Remus had to remind himself that his mouth was partially open, closing it immediately.
Finally, she grabbed a towel from the deck chair, drying out the water from her carnation-pink hair, dragging the towel over her body slowly. She was very pretty; her hair fell just beneath her shoulders in pink waves, and she had such a captivating smile. Remus watched as she plopped down onto the chair and started striking up a conversation with one of her other friends who was sitting in the deck chair beside her.
"What an entry," whispered Reggie. "She looks so hot!"
"Shut up," Remus hissed. "She's just any other girl."
"I guess," relented Reggie. "Do you know who she is, though?"
"How would I know?"
"I don't know, you're a CFO! You know a lot of the people in this place. And you get out and about more. I work from home."
"There are more than twelve million people in this metro area. How am I supposed to know everybody?"
"You should know the good-looking ones, though! You're twenty-five and single. You should be paying attention to things like these!"
"I don't know who she is. Shut up and leave me alone."
Reggie shrugged and swam back to Blondie.
Remus watched, feeling slightly dazed, as the pink-haired woman laughed again, running her fingers through her hair. How he wished he could be the one to do that…
He shook his head of the thought.
She's just any other girl.
He knew he had been lying when he had said that to Reggie.
Because she definitely wasn't just any other girl. Remus had never felt this way so strongly before. He had liked plenty of girls before, but never like this, never at first sight like this.
And suddenly he found himself hoping that he would see her again.
A/N: Oh, don't you worry, Remus, you sure will see her again ;)
