Chapter 15
The party was a success in my opinion. Although I still don't understand how a simple housewarming party can be unsuccessful. Is it just an expression? Sometimes I think my brain spends way too much time thinking about inane things.
Jiraiya finally got his long awaited chance to finally speak with me. "Nice home brat." He said making his way towards me in the backyard. I inclined my head in thanks. "Would now be a good time to talk? I don't want to offend you in any other way." I laughed at that.
"You didn't offend me, you know." I said looking up at him. His eyes conveyed his slight happiness at that statement. "It was my small way of… let's just say payback. You abandoned me after all." I said bluntly and he visibly flinched at that.
"No, I am not blaming you, I am way past that. This is the cold, hard truth. If I were the vengeful type, the first thing I would have done was leave the village. As a whole they have wronged me way more than you. The thing is you can't expect to come back into my life after more than sixteen years and believe that I would… what? Love you? Respect you? When I don't even know you. My own godfather about whom I got to know from the memory of my own dead father. Now tell me how that sounds to you? I also have a feeling that if I didn't already know what you are to me you would have never told me. Please tell me I am wrong." This whole time my voice was steady. Some may even have called it eerily calm.
"What was that about the memory of your father?" He asked but instantly realised that was the wrong thing to say when I gave him the look reserved for irritating people and assholes.
"Is that the most important thing you got from that whole speech?" I asked him incredulously.
"Right, Sorry. It isn't an excuse but you've got to know that when your parents died, it was a hard time for me. For the whole village in fact. Everyone had lost at least someone they knew or loved. Our forces were at their lowest and the mission burden was at an all time high. We were on thin ice with other villages and if it was not for our alliance with Suna, we would have definitely been attacked by Iwa or Kumo. As the spymaster, it was my duty to keep track of all the foreign information coming into the village on all five of the Great Nations that would be useful in defending Konoha from any and all attacks." He looked off into space, his voice full of remorse.
"After that it was my duty to keep you safe, even if from the shadows. Later on I didn't want to come to you because… it pained me. Still does. I don't think I'm a good choice to be someone's caretaker." He said.
"You could've met me at least, you know." I said dejectedly. "I didn't have a single friend growing up. Not one person my age or of any age who would look at me and say, Naruto is my friend. All I knew was harsh glares and hateful whispers. Sometimes I think it's a miracle that I still care for this village when it doesn't care for me in the least."
He hugged me softly and I let him, "I am sorry."
"I know."
This whole conversation reminded me of the similar one I had with Kakashi all those months ago. I don't want to sound like a whiny brat to whomever I meet for the first time but there is a lot of resentment built up for the people here from my current life. I tried my best to move past it but I can't just let it go.
Getting that off of our chests, we spent some time talking about some mundane aspects of life and he told me more about my parents. He came out as a real genuine person when he was not being a lecher. So I went one step further and asked his help in creating a security seal matrix for the house and he was very eager to win back my trust.
Other guests all arrived on time and praised the house, some even bringing housewarming gifts. Other than the Konoha 12 and their Senseis I had also invited Iruka, the Ichiraku duo, the Konohamaru corps and the Hokage. I had also gone to invite Shikaku and Inoichi but they were on a mission apparently and their wives had politely declined.
Neji, being the ass that he was, tried to rile me up by insulting me when I went to the Hyuga compound to invite him , but I knew his real problem and decided to help him out sooner rather than later.

"You think you're the only one who has suffered in this world?" I almost shouted at his naivety, "The only one who was wronged because of the decisions of others?"
Neji felt a little ashamed at my accusations but his face was a blank mask when he replied, "Of course not. But that doesn't mean I have to accept others' mistakes. Or do I not have the right to express my own emotions?"

I took a deep breath and asked, "What do you know about the term Jinchuriki?"
He frowned minutely and replied, "The human containers of Chakra beasts like the Kyuubi? Many villages have them to contain the great powers of the beasts that can wipe out entire villages on a whim. Konoha also had the Kyuubi in the First Hokage's wife, Mito Senju. But after her death due to her old age, we don't have one anymore."
I chuckled drily at that, "I can't believe they altered the village history and even you clan children are ignorant of it."
He looked bewildered at that but kept his thoughts to himself. I continued, "Mito Uzumaki was the First Jinchuriki of the Kyuubi. I am the third."
His eyes widened in shock and he looked down towards my stomach with his eyes activated, "So this seal…"
"Yes. It's the Kyuubi's seal. The fourth wasn't powerful enough to kill a Bijuu, so he did the next best thing by sealing the Kyuubi into me just before he died."
He had a look of sudden realisation as he said, "The adults know about this. Don't they?"
I smiled bitterly at the thought as I said, "They do."
After a few moments of silence, when I felt his pity for me growing by the second, I continued, "The reason I'm telling you this is not to gain your sympathy, it's to show you that people are punished for others' mistakes all the time. Was it my mistake that I was born on the same date as the Kyuubi attack and was chosen as the new vessel?"
I let it hang out there for a few moments. "The villagers hate me for circumstances I had no control over. Hell, when I was younger I had even thought of running away and starting a new life somewhere else." Looking Neji in the eyes I coolly asked him "So, tell me Neji, what would you have done in my place?"
He was feeling very uncomfortable hearing my tale but his face was the usual stoic mask.
"I didn't let my fate take control of me." I said, "Rather, I took control of it and today I am who I chose to be and I regret nothing."
He looked up at me and said, "My father was killed by the decisions of the Hokage and the Clan head. Where the clan head should have sacrificed himself, my father was sacrificed instead because he was of the branch family. His own family betrayed him and now, I am forced into a life of servitude to my father's killers." His hatred was oozing out of him in spades.
"You can't live your whole life blaming others Neji." I began slowly, "I agree the Hokage made the wrong decision by allowing your father's demise, but have you talked to anyone in your own clan about why this was the decision they made? From where I am standing, it looks like one brother sacrificed his life to protect the other."
He felt unbridled rage at that when he began shouting at me, "You don't understand anything. They have the means to subdue me with a mere thought. What do you think will happen if I ask any wrong questions? My uncle didn't even have the courage to look me in the eye and apologize even once for taking my father away from me. All he's done is order me around like any other main family member."
I gazed towards the nearby copse of trees where I sensed an intruder and said loud enough for the eavesdropper to hear, "I have a strong feeling you will be getting all the answers you want soon enough."
He turned on his eyes again and felt instant embarrassment, shame and a little fear.
"Don't fear my friend. Everything will be alright." I said as I began moving towards the compound gates, "Oh, and don't forget about the party tonight. You and your teammates are all invited."

After some more hashing out of details and giving everyone some examples of what can be given as dares, everyone agreed to play. I had laid out a condition specifically for Sasuke that neither of us would mind if the other had to do something with someone else.
