[The Willow Forest, Outer Sanctum] [Nature; Forest]

[The Outer Sanctum of the Willow Forest, with every native monster's level averaging at 50-70 and monsters with a threat level of High-C to Low-A, a dangerous place not many dare casually venture into.

Unlike the outskirts, there are fewer monsters lurking around. Most of the danger tends to appear near the border between the Outer and Inner Sanctum as monsters fight one another for a spot within the Witch of Willow's territory.

Therefore, the border between the Outskirts and the Outer Sanctum are considered to be relatively safer.

Within the Outer Sanctum, there are rare medicinal herbs that can be used to create either a cure for the plague, or become the cause of one.

Alongside them are the highly valued Hercules Beetle and Razor Wasps, whose body parts are key components that can grant the enhancements [Knockback III] and [Lesser Sharpness V] respectively.]

Week 2, Day 5, (Willow Forest, Outer Sanctum)

"Tremor sensors... are more useful than I thought... ton of kinks to work out before its safely usable though." Tia tilted his head as he felt the ground tremble more violently than before, and gave out a low growl of warning to the little girl before his father killed her in cold blood. The patriarch seemed more than willing last he saw of him. She was lucky he went out to hunt for lunch. "Ow!"

A flash of white, and Accala silently slapped her upside the head with her tail.

Judging by the expression on her face, it didn't hurt, but she was slightly irked.

They had been marching for the better part of the day and were currently resting alongside a small creek of water while his father hunted for food, having claimed himself healthy enough to do so. Arnou snarled at anyone that tried to stop him, stating that he needed to work out some frustrations before he snapped.

Tia was under no delusion to think that he wasn't the one he was frustrated with.

Firstly, being born as the runt of the litter and probably would've died without (The Gamer) assisting him. Secondly, bringing in a Renard into the pack without his permission or notice. Thirdly, stepping out on his own and probably worrying them to death. And then lastly, coming back not only with company, but also with an aura much different than the one he used to have.

Arnou was acing abnormally, because if something like that happened in his old world, then Lynn would be dead along with Selina. Monsters were more sapient than he assumed.

The large direwolf came through the bushes with his quarry, a large green brontosaurus-esque creature covered in vines and moss. It was at least three times larger than his father, who was at least two stories tall. He darted back once more and came with two blood red cows that smelled of apples.

"Eat... now," He ripped open one of the red cow's stomach and let the bloody, but perfectly ripe and completely edible apples spill out. Tia blinked at the weirdness, but at least Selina wouldn't be eating raw meat... again. Blood Red Apples from an... Apple Cow were perfectly edible, right? (Observe) wasn't giving him any warning so it should be.

The Arisaur, the moss covered bronto, was surprisingly delicious. It was like a meaty salad, if that made sense. It was weird, but it tasted good so who was he to complain.

"Arnou's old den." Accala spoke up when Selina asked her where they were heading. "The... Outer Sanctum isn't a bad place to raise pups per se, but its not the safest either."

"Mounters from around here are more sapient, and fully grown." Arnou spoke up, somewhat miffed at being forced to carry Selina so they could keep up. "Direwolves are at the middle of the food-chain, neither weak or strong. We rely on numbers, but because it is only Accala and myself to protect our young... we decided against staying."

They planned to stay in the Outskirts for at least six months, so that Tia and his siblings could at least put up a struggle until they can get to them. However, because of the grudge the South Pack held for them, they needed to scrap that plan and move further away so that it was more effort to enact their revenge than it was worth.

"That won't work." Selina spoke up, "You'd need to move out of the forest for them to consider giving up."

"...We'll see." Arnou grumbled. "For now, stop that irritating magic, you're giving out our location like a beacon."

Week 2, Day 5, (Willow Forest, Outer Sanctum)

'Not that different from the old den,' Tia noted as he strolled around his father's old den in Selina's arms. He wanted to go about on his own, but the little girl wasn't having it on account of his father being liable to kill her. '...Nor much to see either, its just a huge hole on the ground. Well, ignoring the ominous crystal pulsating at the back...'

Arnou quickly put down anyone who even tried to get close to that particular spot.

[Heart Crystal] [Large] [Raw Material] [Rare Material]

[Highly Valued in the Adventurer Community for its effects when processed, and the Noble Community for its eerie but eye-catchingly beautiful appearance. If sold, the estimate amount would be 50k to 100k gold depending on its size and quality. It can only be processed by diamond-ranked pickaxes.]

'...Definitely coming back for this later. I'm curious what it means by 'diamond-ranked pickaxes,' seems like a waste to fashion diamonds into a pickaxe.' Maybe diamonds has more uses than a convenient jewel he could sell for a good amount of money. 'If I find some somewhere, I should see what I can do with it.'

Selina frowned, "Its... hard to walk like this."

As usual, Lynn was wrapped around her neck like a scarf and he was held up by her arms against her chest like a stuffed doll. However, whenever there was a break, rather than play with each other around their mother, his siblings opted to play with each other around Selina.

The little girl was having a hard time walking around without accidentally stepping on them.

"...not fair, not fair..." Tia heard someone whine petulantly.

Saeko barreled into Yukon and grappled on the floor while Nyx barked at them from a distance, slowly circling around the two before leaping into the fray at the fist sign of an opening. Selina's knees buckled as they smashed into her, but stood firm. The little witch sighed and moved to the far wall then sat down.

Tia jumped off her and began putting down his siblings, reminding them of his dominance as the eldest. As he put them down, he began thinking of his quests. [The Last Renard II] can be put off until they get to a newer, safer place. [The Great Move II] was still in progress, he doubted his father's old den being their destination, it was too close to the border between the Outskirts and the Outer Sanctum for one.

If they wanted to get away from the South Pack, they need to go even further, as stated by Selina.

The terrain around the den was flat and filled with thick trees, ideal for a quick fight but less so when they were severely outnumbered.

'Hm, what to do...' He would trust in his father's judgement. 'Oh, they stopped attacking me.'

As he expected, he didn't get any new stats or any levels from beating up his two week old siblings. Tia glanced to the outside, maybe he could sneak out... no, reckless stupidity and suicidal stupidity were two different things and he already figured out on which side he fell under.

'Still, I need to fight something... I'm getting restless.' Perhaps it was his new instincts calling out to him? He didn't use to be so bloodthirsty. It wasn't an issue at the moment but he expected it to get worse when he grows up. 'Messing around with (The Gamer)'s getting me nowhere... I need to find another to know how to use it.'

"Oh yeah... there's that option." Arnou noticed his gaze and narrowed his eyes, "...Maybe later."

Week 2, Day 6, (Willow Forest, Outer Sanctum)

It was raining outside.

Because it made it harder to tell anything apart in the rain, they decided to spend another day inside the den. Arnou had just returned from another hunt, but this time he came back with only the blood red apple cows. There were a few dozen more than before, but considering Arnou and Accala's size, it was just about enough for them to last the day.

In the meantime, he began observing his siblings and the others in earnest.

To start things, Saeko was a clingly puppy. She wasn't as energetic as the others, nor was she as cheerful and she was quiet. Yukon and Nyx outgrew her quickly so she was only larger than him and Lynn. She preferred to spend her time cuddling with someone, most of the time it was spend lying down on top of him while she licked his head.

It was absolutely freezing, but he was starting to get used to it so he didn't mind it as much.

But during the times he didn't want to deal with her, he threw Lynn to the wolves as bait and booked it.

Yukon was a bit of a battle junkie, a trait he shared with Nyx. Despite being roughly three weeks old, they were stamina monsters. The two spent the better of the day grappling with each other. In addition to that, he was a bit of a troublemaker, as everything troublesome could always be traced back to him. He knew better than to force Saeko or Tia into his little games though.

Tia began using (Sneak) and (Weak Presence) just so he wouldn't be dragged into one of his little games.

It was amusing seeing him run around like a headless chicken, but regardless, Yukon needed to work on his detection skills.

Nyx was a mix between the two, a battle junkie like Yukon and clingy like Saeko. However, unlike Saeko, his clinginess was influenced by his battle junkie tendencies. In other words, while he liked maintaining close contact that close contact mostly entailed biting their ears until they gave him the attention he wanted. As the youngest, he was a bit spoiled.

Well, it still annoyed Selina as she didn't exactly have their durability. She couldn't stay mad for long though, not because she would've been attacked by their parents, but also because Nyx was the most adorable out of the three of them. It was hard to stay angry at him.

"Roll over," Tia ordered his youngest sibling. Accala let out a high-pitched whine. Another thing to note, Nyx was Accala's favorite child.

Accala was simpler than he expected. She was essentially a tsundere, though a defective one. She tries to act cold towards them but immediately melts if they so much as brush against her. She tries to discipline them but somehow ends up coddling them a few seconds into her lecture. In short, she was a very doting and spoiled mother.

Accala also hated not being the center of their attention, hence her dislike towards Selina and Lynn who were better liked by her children.

Arnou was someone he needed to observe more to form a proper observation. He was a strict, caring father. Unlike his old warhawk of a father who was only strict and never caring. Still, he was flexible enough to tolerate his supposed 'charges' despite his better judgement.

Tia made a mental note to observe his father more later on.

Moving away from his family, the former human glanced at the napping Lynn on top of Selina's lap.

Lynn was pragmatic, whether that was an effect from the trauma of witnessing her father's sacrifice or her mother's death right in front of her, or whether it was simply because they were monsters, was unknown to him.

She was also someone he needed to pay more attention to, because as things stand, she would leave once she felt she overstayed her welcome.

Selina was… an investment, and a friend, if he would label their connection. They weren't partners, at least not yet, that would need him to be able to do something for her. As he was now, Tia would sooner get in her way than be any help.

She was a quiet child, her wariness appropriate for life in the wilderness of this world and tried not to speak more than needed. Tia would need to watch her closer to really understand her.

For the time being, he would settle being her shield/translator/body pillow or just pillow/friend/pet.

'Tsk…' While they waited out the rain to pass, Tia tried experimenting with the (Crafting) ability, with less than stellar results.

(Crafting) gave him an overview of his current inventory, with small descriptions tagged on each item that would expand when needed. Its main feature was the 2x2 square boxes up to.

He assumed those were where he would need to put the materials to craft, there was also a recipe book on the right side but it was empty.

Moving on, his (Instinct I) was telling him that leveling it up would expand that size, perhaps a 3x3 at a milestone level? Tia wasn't willing to risk precious (Skill Points) on something that doesn't serve him any good at the moment.

Maybe in the future, but for the time being, he would save those points for more useful skills.

'(Observe) can be raised, but I'm fine with what it gives me for now so I'll let it passively go up. (Instinct I) on the other hand… might save my life someday. Of course, (Tear I) will probably be a good choice too if I wanted to hit harder as a DPS/Debuff Hybrid.' Tia hummed to himself in thought, '(Sneak) and (Weak Presence) can be passively raised if I keep them active 24/7, not like they cost MP… (Intimidation)... I see some use, but I won't bother with that.'

There were just so many things to do, and so little information to go with. Tia wasn't sure what he wanted to do in his new life either, aside from helping Selina with her life that is.

'...I have absolutely no idea what this thing is talking about.' (The Gamer) was constantly expanding, which he figured out from the first few days of having it around. The direwolf stared at it for a few more moments before dismissing the translucent blue screen. '...Guess I'll save those points for when I get some magic or damaging skills.'

He would figure it out later, unlike the others, there was no fail condition or timer on the quest. Which meant he could clear it at his own time.

The second day in his father's old den was spent in relative silence. They would be able to leave for the real spot tomorrow morning, if they ever did.

Week 2, Day 6, (Willow Forest, Outer Sanctum)

They were woken up in the middle of the night by a series of loud, deep and guttural growling. Arnou and Accala were staring straight out of the den where he could spot something slithering past the entrance.

(Observe) told him that it was a Basilisk, an adolescent Basilisk but a Basilisk nonetheless. It was as large and thick as a medium-sized car with burning red eyes staring into the den.

'Resembling large snake, maybe an anaconda… no, those horns reminds me more of a horned viper. Its scales are… a mish-mash of deep green, light green and brown. Good colors in a forest.' Tia calmly observed the behemoth even as everyone else hid behind the sole human's back. His automatic emotional dampener was doing its job well enough that he didn't feel like screaming bloody murder like the others.

'Its fangs are thick enough to rip through an average-sized human's wrist in one go.' Cue another dampener, 'Would Selina be able to take something like this… with enough preparation probably, but I doubt her chances in a straight fight.'

Tia had been led to believe that snakes could coil up their bodies and shoot out like a bullet towards their prey. Selina could probably make enough walls to mitigate that danger, but she would've trapped herself.

Accala was at an advantage with her ice magic if they ever came to blows, and if the Basilisk acted like snakes do, then it would be slowed down in the cold.

However, once again, it was a Basilisk, also sometimes called a Cockatrice, if it was anything like the ones in his word then it had the ability to turn any of them to stone with a single glance. Yet if so, why hadn't it done so already? 'Ah, its eyes, they've been gouged out.'

In which case, they were in luck.

The Basilisk was heavily injured, with several gaping wounds and deep lacerations on its body. If it those didn't heal soon, the Basilisk would be liable to bleeding out. Even then, without its eyes its ability to hunt were lowered by a large margin.

The serpent bolted away as fast as it could away from them, by its direction, he assumed it was heading towards the eastern edge of the forest.

None of them tried to chase after it because immediately after its left another monster stumbled on them and unlike the Basilisk, the sentient mushroom was more than willing to tussle.

Selina made quick work of it by letting it collide against a wall and enveloping it with said wall before compacting the sphere of solidified dirt. It was a solid show of geokinesis, and another reminder of why Arnou shouldn't trust the little girl with his pups.

Week 2, Day 7, (Willow Forest, Outer Sanctum)

They stumbled into a small scouting party from the South Pack, not too many that it was a threat but enough that they can throw their numbers as a distraction and run off to report. To be exact, there were five of them, three were saddled and wore what resembled a leather helm.

Selina's eyes widened at the symbol on the saddle and reacted violently. Magic surged out of her small form and the dirt around legs undulated before surging upwards and around them. They hadn't noticed them yet before then, so they reacted too late to move out of the way except for one who immediately bolted away.

Arnou quickly chased after it, lobbing off one of the saddled direwolves's head in a single motion as he passed by.

'...Wait, isn't this a chance?' Tia grinned and jumped off Selina's chest. He ignored their shocked gasps and Accala's worried snarl in favor of climbing up one of the bound direwolves.

It buckled and almost knocked him over but he held on. Once he got on top of it, Tia began tearing into its neck as the little witch held back its maw.

The saddled direwolf beside him broke out of its binds and lunged after him. As he expected, it didn't get far due to Accala tackling it further away in a rabid rage. Tia ignored the terrified squeal behind him and doubled his efforts.

[You have slain a Direwolf (Empire)]

[You have gained a exceptional amount of EXP]

'As satisfying as that was... I'm probably going to catch hell for that.'

The former human turned to the side as he felt an intense wave of heat and found the last saddleless direwolf burning to death. He tilted his head, calmed down by his emotional inhibitors and noticed the tip of Lynn's tail flickering a small golden flame.

'...Its surprisingly durable, is it because its from the South?' The direwolf was still alive despite literally being engulfed in flames. Tia noticed it almost breaking out of its bounds once in a while but every time it almost did, Selina quickly reinforced them now that she wasn't backing him up.

The saddleless direwolf keeled over after a solid ten minutes of screaming, howling, cursing and begging.

Arnou came back with a small limp and an open wound under his eye socket. The patriarch couldn't catch up with the deserter, which rendered him incredibly irritated as a result.

So he joined in Accala's deafening lecture of not getting too cocky just because he made a pact with a witch, not knowing it was still inactive, and did a good job hiding how proud he was about his 'first' kill unlike Accala.

His family ate well that night.

Apparently nobody had any problems with cannibalism.

"Monsters eat anything they can find. Its survival of the fittest, the ones that die don't get a say in how their corpses get treated." Selina explained.

Week 3, Day 1, (Willow Forest, Outer Sanctum)

Yukon was starting to get restless.

Saeko joined him in Selina's hold, nuzzling both him and the witch girl, much to their mother's barely concealed jealousy.

Nyx was developing a habit of napping in the middle of the day.

Lynn was practicing with her magic, which he found out she learned after eavesdropping on Selina's lecture on magic. Her golden flame was slow but intensely hot, Accala hated it but the other pups loved her for it, Arnou was muttering something about 'Fox Flare'

She liked the sound of it, and named her flame after it.

Arnou was rapidly recovering from the recent scuffle, though he was no less cautious as he was irritated about the direwolf that got away from him.

Accala was the same as usual and kept an equal amount of attention on her pups and Selina, much to the latter's unease.

Selina was giving a lecture on how to use magic to Lynn, who was only half-listening as the majority of her concentration was focused on applying said lecture on the flickering flame on her tail.

Tia learned [Ice Manipulation] after overusing (Observe) while his mother used hers. Then Selina explained he still needed something called [Ice Conjuration] to actually use it effectively, without it he would need ice to be physically present. On top of that, because (Ice) was a compound element, she wasn't sure he could actually use it without (Wind Conjuration) and (Water Conjuration) not even mentioning (Magic Manipulation) or (Magic Conjuration).

It needn't be said that he began nursing a massive headache afterwards.

'Oh, this finally showed itself.' Tia wondered, but decided not to question the finer details. The young direwolf sighed in slight annoyance. 'No time limit, so I can take my time with this one.'

In the meantime, he would be trying to make heads and tails about Selina's lecture as he did the days prior. Tia listened intently, but everything came in one ear and out the other.

It would be a long time before he got anywhere close to being competent.

Week 3, Day 2, (Willow Forest, Outer Sanctum)

They started moving again at day break.

Arnou was in great condition after Selina spent the entirety of the night healing him. Of course this meant her reserves were once again at an all-time low, thankfully the Outer Sanctum was rich in mana so she just needed time to refill her reserves.

Unfortunately, time wasn't something they were privileged to.

For example, mere minutes after leaving their spot a swarm of juvenile Hercules Beetles attacked them. Then an hour after that came the Adolescent Caterkillers, which was either an oversized caterpillar with spikes on the side of its body, or an oversized centipede that resembled a caterpillar.

Either way, it looked disgusting.

"Adults are a danger, but something like them… are nothing more than an annoyance." Arnou spoke up as he slammed his paw down on one of the oversized caterpillar's heads, gouging out its brains and turning it to paste.

After that, three hours later came some sort of leaf monster with a wooden core.

That one was fun, because unlike the others, it was something he was able to kill. Though, no level up came as it was about as strong as a zombie by his estimate. His parents were uncomfortable about letting him fight, but he'd already shown he was capable.

Tia expected to spar with them sometime after they reached their new home. He wasn't comfortable with the thought of solely relying on Selina to be the muscle in their relationship.

Arnou stopped their group once they were a few hundred meters to their destination.

"Something's there." The patriarch warned, crouching on the ground. "Stay down."

"Enemy?" Selina asked, having a much easier time hiding herself thanks to her much smaller size and experience.

Tia climbed on top of Selina's head to get a better look, activating all of his stealth related skills. The location they intended to use as their den was like their old one, meaning it was on an elevated platform higher than ground level, resembling a plateau, and devoid of shrubs, bushes and berries in the area around it. In addition to that, there was a river nearby leading to a large lake, so they didn't need to worry about water… much anyways, since there were probably still lake predators to worry about.

It was a bit hard to spot them thanks to the distance, but he could make out a small dozen of direwolves.

"Approximately thirty, definitely more since there's a cave opening further back." Arnou snarled, digging deep crevices on the ground. "If only I was in better shape…"

"Should we find somewhere else?" Accal spoke up, having finished binding her children to her body, silenced them too, with the exception of Tia who was away from her.

Though from the look in the she-wolf's eyes, she wanted him to join his siblings and leave the fight to the ones actually able to fight back.

"...I think we, or rather I, can take them, given enough preparation." Selina suggested, "If they're as strong as the last ones, I can stop them in place while you kill them."

"Don't bother, these aren't like those omegas, then they can use (Earth Magic) like you do too." Accala clicked her tongue, "My (Ice Magic) is a bad match too, since they can use (Fire Magic)."

Selina was silent for a few moments before speaking back up, "If Arnou moves quickly, then there won't be any time for them to get rid of the bindings."

"Impossible," He scoffed, "These bastards are quick if nothing else, have to be down South unless they want to be a Wyvern's free meal. I can't cover you, and Accala, while killing them at the same time."

Selina can move while she attacks, but she still needed visuals to know what she was doing. If only they didn't have the high ground she could handle herself better. Accala was better than her in that she could hold her own close combat, but unfortunately for her, she bound her children to her body.

"Only option is to retreat and find somewhere else." They were outmatched, Tia wasn't strong enough or prideful enough to be blind of their chances of victory. "Unless you want to try a shot in the dark and find something in that river willing to help out."

"Unlikely," Lynn said, "I'm an exception since you saved me and I owe you a debt, but the usual response to a monster-to-monster confrontation is kill or be killed…"

"And if they're sentient enough to rely on not just their instinct?" The small canine asked, eyeing the almost feral look in half of the direwolves at the miniature hill.

"Then we need something to convince them to work with us." Selina rubbed his head as she spoke, "Threatening them works… but who knows if they'll stab us in the back immediately afterwards."

Tia quickly looked over his inventory and frowned, the only items worth noting would be the {Death Worm Sickles} and {Gunpowder}. He didn't know how to work out (Crafting) so making something else is out of the question as well.

In other words, their only options were to either fight to the death, run to the hills, or hope for a miracle and find something to help them drive out/and or kill the South Pack direwolves surrounding their intended den.

"Selina, what's your range again?"

"Give or take five hundred meters normally, maybe more if it's a life or death situation." The little girl closed her eyes, "...No, make that seven hundred if I push myself. Though, I stick with fifty because going further is costly, most mana-wise and concentration-wise."

"...Good enough." Tia sat on his hindlegs on her head and pointed at the elevated plateau, "Collapse the plateau!"

Ignoring the shock of his parents, and Lynn, Selina tilted her head side to side and grabbed him under his arms and lifted him to her eyes. "That… is definitely… stupid… reckless… suicidal… and more dangerous than fighting them upfront…"

Tia tilted his head side to side, an expression of deep thought on his face, and grabbed her face with his paws without the claws. "It... might have a chance to work."

The little witch stared him in the eyes and sighed deeply.
