Both Bilbo Baggins and Thorin Oakenshield were extraordinary people, who lived extraordinary lives. Its just that, well they really didn't expect to get to live those lives more than once. Basically the story of the hobbit, with both Bilbo and Thorin re-living it a second time and trying to keep the rest of the company in the dark about it.
