Last chapter! I truly hope you enjoyed this story and that the ending meets with your expectations. Just a few notes as we wrap this up - I know I've teased a bit of...something between Higgins and Magnum, but this story was never intended to go that direction because it's primarily focused on the relationship between Magnum and Katsumoto. However, I do have a sort of spin-off story in the works so watch for that if you're interested in such things. I really, really enjoyed writing this and as always, thank you so much for bearing with me. Usual disclaimers apply, not an expert, not making any money, yadda yadda.
Oh - and the title translates to "hunted" or "pursued," at least according to my sources (Google). -abby
"Come on, Gordie. Let's go for a walk."
Ten days had passed since their misadventure, and it was the first time the detective had been able to stop by Robin's Nest since Thomas was released from the hospital. In response to the suggestion, Gordon looked at the crutches under Magnum's arms and lifted an eyebrow.
"Okay, you walk and I'll...hobble," Thomas grinned.
"Lead the way," Katsumoto said. He let the private investigator set the pace as they wandered toward the edge of the expansive property. Magnum was actually quite agile and graceful with the crutches, and his movements weren't too much slower than usual. Gordon said as much.
"I've had a lot of practice over the years," the private investigator replied cheerfully.
Katsumoto chuckled. "With the amount of trouble you get into, somehow I'm not surprised."
Thomas laughed amiably. "Thanks for coming with me. Higgy is insisting that I make at least three laps around the Nest every day and she was gonna be all over me soon if I didn't get up. As if riding me about physical therapy wasn't enough." He rolled his eyes good-naturedly.
"She's just concerned about you," Gordon observed.
"So I've been told," Magnum said, tone pensive as he recalled the conversation he'd had with Juliet in the hospital. He cleared his throat and changed the subject. "Anyway, how are you doing, man?"
"I'm fine. My headaches are finally gone and I went back to work yesterday."
Magnum nodded approvingly. "Glad to hear it."
Gordon gave the other man an assessing look. "What about you? How's the physical therapy going?"
"Leg's healing up pretty well, actually." Despite the initially dire outlook, Magnum's doctor was quite pleased with his progress. She had finally decided that surgery wouldn't be necessary, and was also cautiously optimistic that a full recovery was possible so long as he diligently kept up with therapy. Thomas wasn't a fan of the near-daily sessions since working the damaged muscles was incredibly painful, but he was willing to do whatever it took to get back on his feet. "It'll be awhile before I'm walking without help," he said with annoyance, "but I'm hoping to start working again pretty soon myself."
"Don't push yourself too hard," Katsumoto advised, glancing down at Magnum's right thigh. White bandages peeked out beneath the hem of the private investigator's shorts, and he held that leg just slightly aloft as he deftly maneuvered the crutches.
"Is that a hint of concern I detect?" Magnum teased.
Gordon didn't respond right away, and was silent long enough that Magnum stopped short and looked at him worriedly. "Gordie?"
Katsumoto sighed. He turned to face the other man. "I...ah." Another sigh. "I've been giving it a lot of thought, and am pretty sure I owe you an apology."
"What for?" Thomas asked, puzzled. "We already talked about this. My leg is not your fault, and I'm fine." He shifted on his crutches. "Or I will be, anyway."
"No, it isn't that. I…" The detective cleared his throat uncomfortably. "I want to apologize for never taking you seriously. I got to see a different side of you while we were out there, and I realize I've not been appropriately respectful of your...abilities. You were a Navy SEAL, and I guess I finally get that now." Katsumoto finally made eye contact with Thomas and held his gaze. He chuckled dryly. "So...sorry for being obtuse." The faint smile fell away as he continued. "Not to mention that I owe you for saving my life. Twice. Pretty sure that arrow was meant for me in the first place."
There was a lengthy pause. A little stunned by the conversation's direction, Magnum waited quietly as the detective gathered his thoughts for whatever he had left to say. Finally Gordon continued. "You were willing to sacrifice yourself to save me. Thanks doesn't seem to quite cover it but, uh...I'll try not to give you such a hard time from now on. And, um," he hesitated again. "I consider you a friend. Just in case there was any doubt."
Thomas stared at him. After a long moment he said, "I think I'm actually speechless."
"Don't let it go to your head," Katsumoto said with a wry grin. "You're still a pain in my ass."
"Fair enough," the private investigator laughed.
"Thomas! Gordon!"
Both men turned at the sound of Juliet and Kumu calling their names. The two women were waving them over.
"Looks like the food's ready," Thomas said. He caught Katsumoto by the elbow as the man started to walk away. "Hey. Thanks for not actually leaving me behind back there. You saved me too, you know. Kept me going."
Gordon nodded once, a slight smile on his face.
"Now let's go eat. I can smell it from here," Magnum said brightly. He released Gordon's arm and pointed himself toward the table of food. By the time they crossed the huge green lawn, Higgins had already prepared a plate for her partner.
"I took the liberty," she said with a smile, placing the food in front of Thomas as he got settled at the table. She then took his crutches and set them out of the way.
"Thanks, Higgy," he grinned broadly at the Brit. "This looks great."
"Uh excuse me, how about some credit where credit is due?" TC joined him at the table, plopping down his own burger-laden plate. "Rick and I devoted a lot of energy to that grill, and it's hot out here!"
"Right?" Rick fist-bumped the pilot as he came over with his own food.
"Well done, gentlemen," Higgins praised them with a grin. "We thank you for your service."
"That's more like it," TC chuckled.
Katsumoto filled his own plate from the selection of grilled items, chips and dip and he took a seat opposite Magnum. "It does look great. Thanks for inviting me."
"Of course we invited you!" Higgins sounded surprised.
"You're 'ohana now, Gordie. Not sure if you realize that," Rick said matter-of-factly.
"Absolutely," Kumu said warmly as she passed beers around the table. "We're so glad you've joined us."
"Time you learn the rules," TC grinned at the detective. "Once you've been in a life-or-death situation with our boy, you're stuck with us for life," TC teased. His expression sobered, and he raised his beer. The others followed suit. "To Gordon. Welcome to the family, man."
Katsumoto graced them with a rare genuine smile. "Well then. If those are the rules…" He raised his own bottle, "to 'ohana."
"To 'ohana," everyone chorused, clinking their bottles together.
"Hold on," Gordon said after a pause. "Does this mean I'm responsible for him now?" He pointed across the table at Thomas, who immediately feigned an expression of offense but couldn't suppress the amused gleam in his eyes. "Because I might need to rethink this."
"Nope. No take-backs," Rick grinned broadly. "And we would all appreciate it if you could somehow keep his sorry ass out of trouble."
"A tall order," TC allowed cheerfully.
"Good luck," Higgins added with a smirk.
"Hey!" Thomas protested. "I don't know why you're all acting like I did something to get us into this mess."
"I will admit that it seems you are not to blame. This time," Juliet teased.
"Good," Magnum nodded, apparently satisfied. He paused thoughtfully. "You know, I never did find out exactly how much we were worth to those hunters."
"Apparently they paid $15,000 each to hunt Gordon," Juliet commented casually.
"You knew? Holdout!" Thomas exclaimed. "What about me?"
All eyes turned to Katsumoto, whose poker face was unwavering.
"If you don't tell me, I'm going to assume that's because it's more than you," Thomas grinned at the detective as he continued teasing. "That's it, isn't it? A former Navy SEAL, a civilian, brought a higher price than an active duty police officer."
"Maybe it's just that I don't want you to feel bad about your relative value. Or lack thereof," the detective replied, completely deadpan.
Thomas cracked up, his surprised outburst of laughter quickly joined by the others. Katsumoto grinned and shook his head. It had been a long time since he'd had a group of people so fiercely caring and loyal that were willing to call themselves his friends.
No, he corrected himself. Not just friends. Family.
