Varric attempts to get closure after Hawke's sacrifice in the Fade. It's not like he could admit his feelings for her while she was alive; there was too much going on, she had someone else, she was surrounded by death. Hawke would want him to pick up where she left off saving the world, so that's what he's going to do regardless but he just doesn't want it to hurt so much.
