Chapter 1

Bo

Bo McCorrigan was a woman of action. When she set her mind to something, she went through with it. Always. Her current goal was conquering the medical world to become one of the best doctors to ever walk the earth. Right after school, she had started training as a nurse and worked in that field for a few years. It had been stressful and awesome at the same time, but it just hadn't fulfilled her. So, about four years ago, she had decided that she wanted more and without further ado, enrolled in medical school to pursue her second career. She was currently in her final year, which meant she would finally go back to actually working in a hospital, which she missed dearly after all this time of theory, reading and studying.

And now, here she was, on the morning of her first day of residency, standing in front of the imposing glass façade of Toronto Medical Centre, looking up to the big letters emblazoned above the entrance of the main building. Others may have found the massive sign daunting, but not Bo. She was excited about the journey ahead of her, and a big smile lit up her face.

"Yo, Bo-Bo, check this out!", said a voice to her left. It belonged to Kenzi, one of her best friends in this world, who was a fellow resident and also her roommate. It had taken them barely a day to fall in totally-platonic-friend-love with each other. About a week into med school, they had met in class and had been pretty much inseparable ever since. They shared an apartment that was small enough to not suck their meagre bank accounts completely dry, but big enough to enjoy some privacy when it came to their love lives. Not that Bo had much of a love life to speak of lately. During the last four years – aside from the occasional fling – she had been way too preoccupied with her education to bother with love.

Kenzi on the other hand was currently in her first serious relationship with a guy named Hale, and they were right in the middle of the all-over-each-other-phase. Bo liked Hale, so she didn't mind that the two were doing it 24/7, but she was grateful that her and Kenzi's apartment was shaped in a way that their rooms were situated on opposite ends of it … after all, the walls weren't exactly made of steel.

Kenzi was grinning at her bestie, pointing at a peculiar-looking bench with a heavy wooden table in front of it. Bo stepped closer to take a look. The whole installation looked like someone had stolen it from a picnic area in the middle of a forest and dragged it into the city. It didn't really fit into the setting of the neat and well-kept park that stretched out in front of the fancy hospital building. Bo let her fingers run across the weathered wood of the log-like table and bench, which thousands of hands had made smooth over the years.

But there was something else about that table … it was completely covered in carvings. God knows how many people had scratched letters into the old wood – sometimes names, sometimes initials, some adorned with additional hearts. All of those carvings had one thing in common – they were all messages of love.

Kenzi's grin widened. "Here, hold this." In one swift move, she shoved her bag into Bo's arms, opened a small compartment and got her old school compass out. "I knew keeping this thing would come in handy someday." She bent over the table, searching for a spot – not an easy task, as the thing was completely filled with declarations of love from countless people. Then she squealed and went to work.

"Dude, we're going to be late. On our FIRST DAY, I might add", Bo scolded. "Chillax, it won't take long", Kenzi answered, tongue between her lips, quickly carving the letters H+K into the wood. "See, there you go. All done. Now we can go." Chuckling, Bo gave her the bag, and together they walked towards the entrance of their brand-new workplace.

It was hectic inside. Kenzi snuck her hand into Bo's and looked around anxiously. Bo gave her an assuring squeeze and smiled at her encouragingly. "This'll be great, Kenz, don't worry. It may look crazy now, but all hospitals work like well-oiled machines. You just have to learn to find your way around, and everything will be fine." She felt Kenzi relax a little, but she didn't let go of her hand. "Let's check the reception. They know everything."

Hand in hand, they walked to a very clean-looking desk area emblazoned with a big sign that read Information Desk. A middle-aged woman with half-moon spectacles was sitting behind the counter. "Hey, um … Mel", Bo greeted her, reading her name tag. "I'm Bo, this is Kenzi. Can you tell us where the new residents are supposed to meet up, please?"

Mel took her glasses off and smiled warmly. "Sure, darling. Just walk straight on down this hallway until you reach the elevator, go to the second floor and look for room number 213. It's a meeting room. The bigshot will greet you guys there." She winked at Bo and put her glasses back on.

"Thanks!", Kenzi shouted and shot the woman a wide grin, finally feeling ready to let go of Bo's hand. They followed Mel's instructions, and a few minutes later they were standing in the biggest conference room Bo had ever seen. They were only on the second floor, but the view was breathtaking. Bo made her way through the waiting crowd and looked outside the huge window that reached from ceiling to floor. She could see the entire park, including the misfit bench and table she and Kenzi had encountered earlier.

"Ahem." The deep and smooth voice of a man caught her attention, and the room went quiet at once. "Good morning. My name is Warren Ash, and I am the owner of this hospital." Bo blinked. Okay, this was weird. Usually, interns and residents were greeted and shown their way around by one or several of the hospital's department chiefs, not the owners. Was this dude even a doctor? As if he had heard her thoughts, he continued: "That's right, I am not a doctor. I am the owner of Ash Pharmaceuticals – you may have heard of it – and I bought this hospital ten years ago to turn it into something great."

Pompous, much? Also, who speaks like that? The guy sounds like fricking Smaug.

"I am sure you have all heard of our education programmes and will be delighted to hear that, just like in previous years, the hospital will bestow a grant on the three top students of the year." He interrupted himself to bask in the surprised gasps erupting around him. Smiling contently, he continued: "You will meet all department chiefs in due time. For now, please follow me, I will show you around." With that he turned on the spot and walked out of the room, eagerly followed by the crowd.

Bo and Kenzi shot each other a glance and giggled childishly at their respective facial expressions. "What a weirdo", Bo whispered, following the rest of the new residents out of the room. "Kinda glad he's just the owner", Kenzi added in a relieved tone and once again took her bestie's hand to drag her outside.

The day flew past, and at the end of it, Bo's head was spinning from all the new information. She was really glad that she had already worked in hospitals before, otherwise it would have been overwhelming. Toronto Med was huge. Kenzi was overwhelmed, and it had taken Bo some of her best smooth-talking game to calm her down, make her tea and send her to bed early. She had even called Hale and told him to not jump Kenzi's bones for once but instead just be there for her and hold her close. Which he did. He was a good guy.

Now, Bo was sitting in the shared living room sipping on her own cup of tea, stroking her contently purring black cat named Vex and reading a medical magazine. She wasn't studying – the edition was an old one, but it contained one of her favourite medical articles of all time. It was so well-worded and easy to understand, even though the topic was actual fricking neuroscience. The author was one of the most renowned and absolute best in her field – Dr Lauren Lewis … who also happened to be the head of neurosurgery at Toronto Med.

She was the reason why Bo had set her mind on becoming a neurosurgeon, and she was the reason Bo had talked her favourite med school professor into pulling some strings, so that she and Kenzi could start their residency at this very hospital. Professor Dean MacMillan had been like a father to all his students – or actually more like a grandfather – and he was Lauren Lewis' biggest fan. During his classes, he had so passionately talked about her research and articles that Bo had dreamed of one day learning from her. During her who-knows-how-long career, Dr Lewis had published a shit-ton of papers and articles and books, and Bo had devoured all of them. Even though she had never actually seen the woman, she knew she would just love working with her. After all, if someone was able to write in such a way about complex topics that even a neuroscience noob like Bo could understand, she must be a great teacher! She couldn't wait to meet her. And hopefully, tomorrow would be the day.

Tomorrow was not the day. As it turned out, Bo wouldn't meet her idol for another two weeks, because she happened to be away on a lecture tour. Of course she is. She's a goddamn legend, everyone wants her brain, right? But Bo could wait. She spent the days working her arse off at the hospital, trying hard not to fall back into old habits and tell the nurses how to do their job – curse you, previous career! – and learning to find her way around the enormous hospital building. Mel, the receptionist, became her trusted ally when it came to the latter.

Besides all this, she helped Kenzi get accustomed to the real-life stress of working in a hospital. But her younger friend was a quick learner – a skill that had been very useful in her previous life as a thief and general underdog, living in the gutter and in holding cells, until she managed to turn her life around and started something real. Bo was very proud of her bestie. After these two weeks, Kenzi felt right at home and it was like she'd never worked anywhere else.

It was a Wednesday when Dr Evony Morrigan, the hospital chief, called all residents into conference room Awesome-View – as Kenzi had nicknamed it since – to finally meet Dr Lewis, who had returned from her trip last night. Dr Morrigan was a cool and pretty badass lady who had most likely clawed her way to the top, Bo reckoned. She had a very strict demeanour about her and always spoke very clearly. So, naturally, all the straight guys in Bo's residence year were pretty much lined up on the ground at her feet. Bo found that kind of worship a little embarrassing, but hey, each to their own, right? Besides, she hadn't decided yet whether or not she liked Dr Morrigan. There was something about her she could not put her finger on. Yet. Then again, Bo was only a lowly resident, and the hospital chief hardly ever dealt with the likes of her.

So, here she was, paying no mind to the park view, because she was so excited to finally meet Dr Lewis. It had been on purpose that she'd never looked her up online, because she was afraid Dr Lewis would lose some of the magic if Bo put a face to her. But today was finally the day. She stood right at the front, because she wanted the famous neurosurgeon to sign the magazine she had brought to work for this purpose.

Dr Morrigan walked in, and the room fell silent at once. All eyes were on her immediately, there was no need to shush anyone. Bo snorted quietly and smiled. Who cared about those idiots, who let themselves be jinxed so easily? Bo was immune to that kind of thing. Besides, they weren't here to gawk at Dr Morrigan!

The chief smiled at the assembled gang and cleared her throat. "During the last two weeks, you have all worked very hard, and I am proud of all of you." Wow, that's actually nice of her to say. "At this point, you have met all attendings, with the exception of one – one of the best this hospital has." Oh boy, oh boy! "So, without much further ado, please welcome our head of neurosurgery, Dr Lauren Lewis." Dr Morrigan extended her arm towards the door, and Dr Lewis entered the room … smiling, hands casually stored in the pockets of her white lab coat.

Bo felt like she had hit a wall standing still. Never in a million years was this the same Dr Lewis who had written all these awesome articles and books and papers. Bo had expected a middle-aged woman, to say the least, but this Dr Lewis was … young – probably around Bo's age. Plus, she was stunning.

Bo's jaw dropped without her noticing, and she was openly staring. She couldn't help it – the woman was a goddess. Intense, sparkling light brown eyes, a perfect jawline that looked like it was carved … "Bo!" The sound of her name was too far away. She only vaguely noticed it. She was too lost in the lush blond tresses framing that perfect face with those kissable lips above that neck … God, her neck was so lean and …

"BO!"

"Hm?" Bo ripped her gaze away from the gorgeous woman in front of her and turned around. Suddenly, her ears started working again, and she heard chuckling. Then her eyes met Kenzi's, showing a strange mix of anger and bemusement. Her friend shoved something into her hands, both of which at some point had apparently ended up at Bo's side. It was the magazine. She must have dropped it. Suddenly she realised why everyone was chuckling. Her face turned red as a tomato. Embarrassed, she turned back around clutching the magazine, staring at the ground.

"Quiet, please!", Dr Morrigan scolded dismissively. Judging from her tone, she seemed to have decided to 'not notice' Bo's little staring session, and for the first time, Bo felt real affection for the ice-cold badass that was Dr Evony Morrigan.

Then Dr Lewis spoke. Like seeing her hadn't been agonising enough. She didn't just look amazing, she also sounded it. Her voice was clear and oh-so sweet. It was as if she was singing. What about, Bo had no capacity of comprehending at the moment. Her gaze still fixated on the floor, she closed her eyes and just listened to the melody. Kenzi would fill her in later. Way too soon, the music stopped, and people started moving. Carefully, Bo opened one eye and looked up.

Dr Lewis was gone, as was Dr Morrigan. Bo took a deep breath and released it again. Then she turned to Kenzi, who was still eyeing her with a mixture of bemusement and disbelief. Bo put her precious magazine on the conference table, grabbed Kenzi's shoulders and announced: "Girl, I am in deep shit."

"What the hell happened to you?", Kenzi shouted when they were both home that night. "It was like you stopped functioning." She gestured wildly in front of Bo's face and snapped her fingers. "Warning, Bo-Bo out of order, warning! Technical assistance required immediately." Bo grabbed her hands and put them on her chest. "I don't know, Kenz. I guess, I …"

"You freaking freaked. But why?" Bo dropped Kenzi's hands and sighed soundlessly. Without a word, she turned around and slumped down on one of the comfortable armchairs in the living room. Then she covered her face with both hands and mumbled something. Kenzi went to sit next to her on the armrest and put an arm around her shoulders. "That bad, huh?"

Bo nodded and let her hands slide down to her lap. They sat like this for a while. Finally, Bo straightened her back and jumped out of the chair. "Look, there's an easy explanation for this, okay? That shit wasn't rational, right? I mean … I just expected to see something … and then that didn't happen. Totally normal to be a little weird afterwards, right?" Kenzi nodded hesitantly. "Bo, you were so far gone, you weren't even present anymore."

"But that was the shock. It must've been, right? And now I know that … Lauren Lewis is …" She swallowed. "Now I know what she … Next time, I'll be my regular old self, okay? Nothing to worry about." Kenzi still didn't look convinced. "Kenzi, I expected an old-ish woman, okay? And I was excited to meet her all week. It was just that … just a tiny little mini-shock, right? I need you to tell me that was all it was. Come on, bestie!"

Kenzi let out a breath that she hadn't realised she was holding. Then she smiled. "You need ice cream and a nice hot bath and take-out." Bo looked relieved and more like herself again. "Tell you what, you go enjoy the bubbles, I'll order the food, and later we'll snuggle up on the sofa, eat ice cream and watch shitty TV. How's that?"

"I love you", Bo said smiling.

"Yeh, that's cos I'm awesome."
