Chapter 1

July 31st, 1977

Brighton, England

"REDUCTO" "BOMBARDA"

James Potter ducked the Death Eaters Curse and sent an Exploding Charm at the other man who dodged before apparating away.

"Fuck" James swore before looking at his good friend Sirius Black who was fighting another Death Eater who had apparated away before James could fire a spell at him,

Soon the rest of the Death Eaters were forced into a full long retreat taking their wounded with them as the Aurors collected their bearings.

James sighed.

They had won this battle against the Death Eaters but at least three Aurors were dead and he didn't even know if any of the enemy had been killed or not or had just been bloodied.

The Aurors had won another what the Muggles would call a Pyrrhic victory.

In the grand scheme of things, this was unsustainable.

James and his friends Peter Pettigrew and Sirius had joined the Auror Force immediately after they had graduated from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry last spring.

Their goal was to fight the Dark Wizard Lord Voldemort who was waging a war against the Wizarding World.

And ever since then they had participated in over two dozen skirmishes and four major battles against the Death Eaters.

It was brutal.

But they were all fighting for a good cause.

James' wife Lily Potter was scheduled to give birth in late August and he was fighting for her and his unborn child to make sure they would have a better life.

Lilly had not wanted James to continue going on missions with the baby so close but the need was urgent.

He intended to get back to her soon though.

After helping the wounded get back to areas where they could get proper medical burial James worked to bring the body of the deceased Auror Clawson with him so his family could bury him.

Too many had died in James mind and there was no end in sight for this war,

Checking on Sirius who was released after getting his injuries checked on they were startled by someone directing them to the floo.

It was Remus, their good friend and he looked frantic.

"James, Sirius" He gasped "Lilly's gone into labor".

James swore loudly "Oh of all the times" and then collected himself "Where are they at Remus".

"They are on their way to the hospital," Remus said "You're cleared to come through".

Hurrying James went through the floo closely followed by Sirius where they were directed to Lilly's room to find her with the Meditwich Adeline Schneider,

"James" Lilly growled seeing her husband enter the room "Where the hell have you been".

"Sorry Lily-Flower," James said "I've been busy how are you doing".

And then James wanted to hit himself for how stupid that sounded.

"How do you think I'm doing? "Lily said and before she could growl out something else she was seized by another contraction and held out her hand instead that James hurried to take a hold off.

She groaned, pressing her head back against the pillow. "Relax Lills," James tried to soothe her. "Shut up James," Lilly snapped while in the middle of her contraction. James's eyes about popped out of his head, staring slack-jawed at his wife who had her eyes closed again, panting through a contraction. "James, she doesn't mean it. It's the pain of the contractions talking," Sirius gently reminded his best mate, giving a reassuring smile. "Andy was just the same when she gave birth to Nymphadora''.

As James held his wife's hand he focused on directing small calming charms at her as he waited for their child to be born.

Lilly remained quiet keeping her eyes closed, her body already felt worn out, she was beginning to wonder how she was ever going to get through this.

"You're almost fully dilated Mrs. Potter," Healer Schneider said. "Soon it will be time to push," she said looking around the room at the other occupants. "Is the nursery prepared?" Schneider asked James.

"Yes everything is ready," He replied nervously "We've had it ready since June" Looking back at his wife who was panting through her worst contraction yet;

"Mrs. Potter," Adeline said softly, "It's time to start pushing with your next few contractions." Lilly groaned as her contraction ebbed. Licking her lips she looked up at James with pain clouded eyes. He bent forward, placing a gentle kiss on her sweat-slick brow. "I love you," he whispered against her hot skin. Lilly reached up and caressed her husband's stubbled and hairy cheek with her hand. "You need to shave," she chuckled. James grinned against her forehead, "Sorry love." he said, "I've been in a beard challenge with a couple of guys at work and it's gotten a bit out of hand".

Lilly chuckled "I will never understand you guys and how you enjoy going around blasting at things all day".

"And that's why you're not an Auror," Sirius said.

Lilly just glared at him.

"Now Mr. Potter, On Mrs. Potter's next contraction I want you to help support her as she pushes," Healer Schneider said. "Mrs. Potter, let me move your legs please," the Healer said gently as she busied herself with parting Lilly's legs and bending her knees up." Mr. Potter, I want you to position yourself behind your wife to better support her," She instructed James who hurried to comply.

"Ok Mrs. Potter, you need to push," Healer Schneider said. James positioned himself so that Lilly's sweat-soaked back was against his chest, with his leg bent at the knee, his foot resting against the inner thigh of his other leg. The opposite leg was stretched out alongside Lilly's who grabbed her knees instinctively and took a deep breath before pulling forward as she began to bear down. The pain she felt was only intensified by the amount of pressure she added while trying to push.

"Lily," Healer Schneider said, "On the next contraction you'll be able to feel the baby's head if you want to."

Lily's eyes scanned around to look at the healer who was concentrating on the lower part of her body. "I'm going to cast a spell so you don't tear," Healer Schneider said, closing her eyes Lily and James could see her lips moving as she said a spell beneath her breath. A cool tingling sensation came over the opening of Lilly's birth canal.

"Oh God," Lilly yelled as another contraction quickly came over her again. What she had to do became as natural to her as breathing after doing it so many times already. "Lills! Open your eyes," James whispered into her ear, "Look, I can see the head!" he said excitedly. Lilly opened her eyes and looked down between her legs to see bulging out of her the top of a head covered in black hair. She took her hand off of her knee and reached down as she pushed; feeling her child's head as it made its way out of her body.

Determined and with all that was in her, Lilly took a deep breath and bore down again, pushing with all her might. Slowly more of the baby's head emerged until it she could see its entire face. "Lilly! Oh, Merlin Lilly look!" James cried as he held her up. Lilly threw her head back against her husband's shoulder, gasping for breath.

"Ok Mrs. Potter, here comes the hard part, but you can do it. Just give me a good push and we'll have the shoulders out," Healer Schneider said as she worked quickly to clear the baby's mouth and nose out as she cradled its head in her hands. Lilly felt her stomach began to squeeze again as she took one more deep breath and pushed, pulling every ounce of her reserve to give her extra strength. "Almost there!" Healer Schneider said, concentrating on working the shoulders out. "Come on Lills!" James cried, holding onto her shoulders, roughly kissing her temple.

Lilly felt as if she couldn't be stretched any further then she felt a sudden release as the baby slipped out of her body. Instantly Healer Schneider placed the infant on her stomach and began to rub it down with another towel. Within seconds the tiny purple creature let out a lusty scream. Lilly began to cry and laugh at the same moment wrapping her arm around the baby as the healer rubbed its extremities, her other arm reached up and wrapped around James's neck who laughed through his tears. "It's a boy!" Sirius shouted excitedly.

"Lilly!" James shouted excitedly, "It's a boy!" Lilly could only cry at the moment looking down at the messy little creature on her stomach. Healer Schneider quickly cut off the umbilical cord and got rid of the placenta as she scooped up the baby, swaddling it in towels that had been waiting on a side table.

Soon Healer Schneider had cleaned and swaddled the baby handing him back to Lilly and James.

"Mrs. Potter I need you to hold still, "Healer Schneider said, holding her hands against Lilly's stomach as she closed her eyes who felt a great cooling sensation wash over her as the healer cast several mending spells to her body.

Thankfully even though the baby had decided to come earlier than expected the actual length of the birth was not that long and at the end of it the two parents were holding a baby boy with jet dark black hair and bright emerald green eyes.

Soon after the birth, the remainder of their friends Remus and Peter entered into the hospital room to see the new baby and to congratulate the new parents.

"What are you going to name him?" Remus asked curiously.

"You could name him James," Peter suggested.

Lilly shook her head "No, No" She said "One James is plenty enough we don't need another ''She said with mirth in her eyes.

"Maybe for the middle name though" She conceded.

"How about Harry" Sirius suggested looking at the lump of hair the baby already had "It looks like he's already got enough".

James nodded.

He liked that idea

Lilly looked contemplative "That can be a nickname," She said, "But I want a more formal name for him".

"What do you suggest then Lily-Flower? James asked.

After a few seconds "Hadrian" She said "Hadrian James Potter".

James smiled

"I love it," He said.

Their friends also smiled.

Sirius was the first one to come up and hold Harry and quickly found out something when he moved to tickle Harry's nose and got a shock when the boy grabbed a hold of his finger in his little mouth.

"Wow," Sirius said, "James you seem to have a little fighter on your hands here".

Everyone chuckled at that.

After Sirius held Harry for a little bit he handed him off to Remus who seemed to enjoy the little one quite a bit before handing Harry to Peter who seemed the most anxious of them all to hold the baby,

"Don't worry about it Pete," James said "Im sure you'll do just fine with him,

Nervously Peter took Harry who after a few seconds burst into tears

Peter looked nervous at the crying and tried to reassure the toddler.

"Shhh ''He said, rocking Harry "It's ok your Uncle Pete's here Harry you've got nothing to worry about ''.

Frowning James reached to take back Harry who calmed upon being put back in his fathers hold although his face showed annoyance if that was possible on a baby that he had been put in Pettigrew's arms in the first place

Harry looked also a little bit upset.

"Do you think he needs to nurse ?" James questioned

Lilly nodded.

The other three Marauders taking the hint left to share the news with everyone else giving a few last congratulations to the happy couple.

Lilly unbuttoned her blouse and took off her bra. James put Harry on Lilly's breast and he eagerly started to nurse

Lily asked Healer Schnider"Is Harry healthy?"

The Healer nodded and said, "The baby is perfectly healthy. How are you?"

Harry looked up at his mother.

"I think he has your eyes, " said James, looking at him.

When Harry heard his father's voice he stopped nursing, looked over at his father, and then went back to nursing.

After some more fitful reasonably productive nursing, punctuated by letting go and looking around, Harry fell asleep with his mouth still on his mother's breast, and it was not easy getting him off without waking him up. James had to hold Harry close to him with some pressure to keep him asleep.

Soon some more Healers and House Elf's came in that helped Lilly get into the shower and cleaned up as James dozed off with Harry.

It had been a long day but all worth it.
