A/N: I just want to say, you have no idea how excited I was to write a chapter about Annie (like I've had this chapter planned for months). I've seen the musical twice professionally and I love it every single time, and I have no issue singing the songs while driving. I hope you enjoy this one :)
"You need to promise me that you'll behave for Mom," Jay said as he fixed Drew's tie.
Drew sighed, "Really? I behave all the time. I'm a good kid."
"I know, but you're going somewhere new doing something you've never done before," Jay raised an eyebrow, "We both know that scares you."
Drew bit his lip and looked down nodding.
Jay squeezed his shoulders then straightened up, "It'll be okay. It's really fun."
Drew smiled slightly, "You've seen Annie?"
"No, I know the story though. I meant that going to shows is fun," Jay leaned against the wall, "Mom and I used to go to the show every couple months before we had you."
Drew crossed his arms, "What does that mean? You didn't have me. You adopted me."
Jay chuckled, "Good point, sorry."
"Jay!" Hailey yelled down the stairs, "I need help."
He hurried up the stairs with Drew right behind him. "What's going on?"
Blake ran out of his room wearing only a diaper and one of Jay's baseball hats.
Jay grabbed him before he could get to the stairs, "Hey, what're you doing?"
"He's refusing to wear any clothes," Hailey said while walking out to the hallway. She held up one of his overall outfits, "Can you please put this on him?"
"Well, that outfit's a little lame," Jay bounced Blake, "Right? You deserve cool clothes."
"Jay," Hailey rolled her eyes. She walked past him to her room, "Just do it."
"You should put him in his t-rex outfit," Drew said.
Jay smiled, "I like that idea."
"I have good ideas," Drew nodded.
Jay laughed and led the way to Blake's room. The second he started going through the drawers looking for the green onesie with the hood that had scales sticking out of it, Blake started screaming and kicking his legs.
"No! No, Dada!" he yelled tipping his head back and shaking around.
"Whoa, hey!" Jay grabbed the onesie and brought Blake to the changing table putting the hat on his own head, "Calm down, calm down. It's okay, you're okay."
Drew covered his ears, "He's not happy."
"No, and I have no idea why," Jay said. He tried wrangling Blake enough to dress him, but Blake did his best to roll around, pull his feet up to his hands, and make the loudest noises he possibly could.
Drew ran out of the room leaving Jay staring down at Blake catching his breath once the onesie was tossed to the ground and forgotten.
Blake smiled up at Jay and put his hands in the air.
"You're a trouble maker," Jay breathed. He shook his head then picked Blake up to carry him to his bedroom. "Hails," he said, "I think today's a no clothes day, you want to join him?"
Drew looked up from his iPad and fake gagged, "You're disgusting."
Jay laughed, "Sorry, buddy, I didn't know you were in here."
Hailey came out of the bathroom smiling, "Nice."
Jay scanned her and chuckled at her dress paired with a pair of tennis shoes, "What's this?"
"She has fat feet," Drew said. He turned his iPad off and set it on Hailey's pillow.
"Did you know that happens to you?" Hailey asked, "I knew my face and my boobs and my ass, but my feet?"
"You said some dirty words," Drew shook his head.
"Go get your shoes on," Jay pointed toward the door, "Aunt Kim and Cara will be here soon."
Drew rolled his eyes then hurried out of the room.
Hailey picked up the flats she had wanted to wear, "They hurt."
Jay shrugged, "It's okay. You look fine. I really don't think anyone's going to say anything, and, if they do, I will personally kick their ass."
Hailey smiled slightly and kissed his cheek, "Thank you." She turned to Blake and raised an eyebrow, "Blake Henry."
"Mama," he giggled.
Hailey couldn't help it and laughed. She poked his stomach, "You need clothes on. This is not acceptable."
Blake laughed and grabbed her finger.
The doorbell rang and Hailey took a deep breath.
"Are you sure you're okay with watching him today and trying to paint the rooms?" she asked.
"Hailey," Jay raised an eyebrow, "He's my kid."
"He's also a handful," Hailey said.
Jay shook his head, "I can handle him. I'll just stick him in his pack-n-play while we paint."
"Good luck," Hailey turned back to Blake reaching for the hat on Jay's head. She bit her lip, "Maybe-"
"Nope," Jay put his hand on her back and led her out of their room, "You're going. You haven't had a proper day alone in forever."
"I'll still be with Drew," Hailey pointed out as they walked downstairs.
"What's wrong with being with Drew?" Drew asked.
"Nothing," Hailey kissed his head. She smiled at Kim, Cara, and Adam, "Hey."
"Looking good, Mama," Kim teased.
"Thank you," Hailey smiled slightly.
"Aunt Hailey," Cara held up a box of Thin Mints, "I asked my friend Jessica and she let me have one of her boxes of cookies for you. I told her you were making a baby, so she said you can definitely have some."
"Oh," Hailey laughed and took the box, "Thank you." She turned to Kim and Adam, "Do I-"
"I paid," Adam shook his head, "Don't worry about it."
"Are you sure?" Hailey grabbed her purse from the closet, "I have money."
"I can buy you cookies," Adam chuckled, "Go ahead and stick them in your purse for the show."
"We can have snacks?" Drew asked.
"Mhmm, but we'll have to be quiet," Kim nodded.
"Oh boy," Cara sighed, "I don't like being quiet for a long time."
"We know," Drew said.
Jay flicked the back of his head.
"What?" Drew hissed.
"Be nice," Jay said.
"I'm a nice person," Drew nodded.
"We should go," Hailey put her hand on his back, "Text me if you have questions about any of the rooms, Jay."
He rolled his eyes, "We've talked about it a lot and you left notes, we can paint three rooms."
"Is it hard or something?" Adam asked.
"My dad said I can only have one stripe," Drew held up a finger, "He kept doing this, 'One stripe, Drew Alexander, one stripe. I'm not painting forever. This is called a compromise.'"
"I did not act like that," Jay shook his head.
"Yeah," Drew nodded.
Hailey held back a laugh because Drew was right – Jay had been pretty insistent on nothing too crazy. She didn't blame him because stripes were a pain to paint, but now Drew had the chance to design his own room for the first time ever, and she really wanted him to do what he wanted, so after a lot of talk, they compromised on a thick lighter green stripe around the middle of the room.
"Let's go," she said with a smile. She kissed Blake's cheek, "Be good for Daddy." She turned to Jay, "And you be good to Buzz."
Jay softened and chuckled, "I'm always good." He pecked her lips, "Bye, have fun."
Blake's eyes widened as Hailey followed Cara, Kim, and Drew out the door. "No," he whispered, "No!"
"You okay, buddy?" Adam grabbed him from Jay.
Blake's eyes teared up, "Mama."
"Hey, hey, it's okay," Adam said, "I'm here and your dad's here, we're going to have fun."
"Mama," Blake cried and put his head on Adam's shoulder.
Jay bit his lip, "He'll be okay. He really hasn't been without Hailey though since…since he came home from the hospital."
"Oh, so you think now's a good time to test out how it'll go when we're trying to paint?" Adam asked bouncing Blake, "I don't know if you've noticed, but your kid's pretty attached to your wife."
"I really didn't have a choice," Jay walked with him back upstairs, "Hailey needed a break and she likes going to musicals. It's just a few hours, right?" He grabbed Blake's pack-n-play from his closet then brought it to Drew's room. "All-right," he pointed to the darker can of green, "This one goes everywhere. The lighter one's the stripe that we'll have to measure out later. If we don't finish it today, it's fine, I can do it tomorrow."
"Sounds good," Adam breathed out then set Blake down in the pack-n-play, "Let's get to work before the others get here then."
Drew gripped Hailey's hand as they weaved through the crowd toward their seats after buying some M&Ms and candied nuts to eat during the show. He suddenly stopped walking and pulled Hailey off to the side.
"I-I can't," he shook his head, "I'm too scared."
"We're almost there," Hailey said softly. She put her hand on his chest and frowned, "Take a few deep breaths."
Drew whined quietly and bounced on the balls of his feet. He rubbed his hands over his thighs, "Mom."
"I know, I know," Hailey whispered, "You're okay, I'm right here."
They stood in the corner for a few minutes as Drew took several deep breaths. Hailey continued whispering to him and tried distracting him from the crowd noises all around them.
"Oh, oh! Drew! Aunt Hailey!"
They turned to see Cara and Kim coming out of the bathroom.
Kim smiled at them and waved, "Want to walk back to the seats with us?"
"What do you say?" Hailey asked Drew.
"It's going to start soon," Cara sang.
Drew smiled a little and nodded.
"Let's go," Hailey put a hand on his back and led him over to them.
"Everything okay?" Kim breathed.
"Just a little too much noise," Hailey explained quietly.
Kim glanced at Drew laughing softly at Cara skipping as best she could while still holding her hand and nodded, "Once we're seated, hopefully he'll feel better."
"I hope so," Hailey said.
They stopped at the stairs and made their way to their seats. Hailey sat back down next to Drew and opened his M&Ms for him, "Share with Cara, please."
Cara pointed down to the stage, "It says the title! Annie. Is that her name?"
"It is," Kim nodded, "She's a little girl that doesn't have a mom and dad, but she's getting a family."
"Like us," Drew smiled.
"Exactly," Hailey squeezed his shoulder.
"Well, what happens?" Cara asked.
"You'll have to watch and find out," Kim laughed.
"Oh goodness," Cara sighed.
The lights began to dim and Drew's hand shot out to Hailey's.
"It's okay," she said softly, "It just means the play's going to start soon."
"Oh," Drew nodded. He blushed, but still held onto Hailey's hand.
She smiled at him and rested their hands on her stomach just as the baby began kicking.
"Princess is excited too," Drew whispered.
Hailey laughed, "Seems like it."
Drew smiled, "Thank you for taking me here. This is fun."
Hailey's eyebrows shot up, "Really?"
"Yeah," Drew nodded, "It makes me nervous, but I like spending time with you."
Hailey felt tears come to her eyes, "I like spending time with you too."
The music began and Drew said, "Oh."
Cara clapped, "It's starting!"
"Shh," Kim laughed quietly and touched her finger to Cara's lips.
"Oops," Cara giggled.
Hailey wiped her eyes before resting her free hand on the other side of her stomach. She took a deep breath and relaxed in her seat just as the play began.
"Dada! Dada!"
"Jay, just grab him," Kevin groaned, "I love the little dude, but you need to stop him from crying."
Jay sighed and set the roller covered in blue paint down on the tray, "He was fine a little bit ago." He looked over at Blake pressing his hands and face against the netting, "Buzz, we're painting your room, don't you want a cool room?"
Blake whined and dropped back to lay down. He grabbed his stuffed dog and quietly talked to it for a moment then yelled again, "Dada!"
"Okay, okay," Jay hurried over and picked him up, "Hi."
Blake immediately smiled and hugged Jay around the neck.
"Thanks, buddy," Jay said softly.
"Maybe he's hungry," Kevin suggested.
"Yeah," Jay let out a breath before carrying Blake from the room. He glanced in Drew's room at the drying paint then entered the nursery where Will and Adam were almost done putting the first coat of pink paint on the walls.
Jay smiled slightly, "Looks good."
"Nothing but the best for my niece," Will said.
Adam laughed, "Well, right now your niece has the great chemical smell of paint." He looked at Blake and plugged his nose, "Yucky, right?"
Blake laughed and covered his nose.
"You two want a water?" Jay asked, "I'm gonna go get this guy a snack downstairs."
"Yeah, that'd be great," Will stepped back to wipe his forehead, "This just needs to be pink, right? No other colors?"
Jay shook his head, "No, just this."
"Cool, we should be done soon then," Will let out a breath.
"Coat one," Adam pointed out, "You can still sort of see that dark grey color around the closet."
"I really appreciate you guys helping out," Jay said. He tightened his hold on Blake, "We both do. Can you say 'thank you' to Uncle Will and Uncle Adam?"
Blake hummed and watched Jay.
"Thank you," Jay nodded, "Repeat after me. Thank you."
Blake stuck his tongue out before bursting into laughter.
Will chuckled, "You're welcome."
"Yeah, anytime," Adam smiled at Blake, "How has he been talking?"
"Few things," Jay nodded, "Mom, Dad, Drew, up, no, love, those are the big ones. They're not perfect, but he gets the point across."
Blake touched his mouth then patted his stomach.
"And he's hungry," Jay explained, "Okay, be right back."
"Hey, I wouldn't mind a granola bar or something either," Adam called out as Jay left the room.
"Got it!" Jay yelled back and carried Blake to the kitchen, "What do you want?"
Blake looked around once Jay put him in the highchair and said, "Mama? Mama!"
"She's with Drew, she's not home, buddy," Jay grabbed the box of Cheerios and poured some in a bowl.
Blake kicked his legs, but before he could cry, spotted the food and instantly lit up.
"Yeah, your favorite," Jay smiled. He ate a handful of the cereal then placed it in front of Blake, "Here you go, bud."
The doorbell rang and Blake gasped.
Jay frowned and got up.
"Dada," Blake whispered.
"Stay," Jay said and walked to the front door just as the doorbell rang again. He glanced through the peephole then smiled and opened it.
"Hello!" Vanessa walked in the house with a handful of bags.
"I didn't know you were coming over," Jay said.
"I was just in the neighborhood," Vanessa slipped her shoes off.
"Oh really?" Jay grabbed a bag from her and looked inside to see curtains and a roll of cloud wall decals. He raised an eyebrow, "Just in the neighborhood?"
"Mhmm," Vanessa moved to go up the stairs only for Jay to grab another bag from her. Inside it was a set of baby animal prints and a black banner that said 'brave.'
"This sure looks a lot like the stuff Hailey was picking out for the kids' rooms," Jay said.
"Really?" Vanessa asked, "Now that's a coincidence. I just thought it all looked really cute."
"What're you doing?" Jay put the bags down.
Vanessa shrugged, "Helping out."
"Vanessa," Jay said quietly.
She weakly smiled, "Well, Jay…"
He shook his head and crossed his arms.
"Fine," she sighed, "Hailey ordered all this stuff so I could go pick it up and check-in on all of you."
"Uh-huh," Jay nodded.
Vanessa sat on the stairs, "So how's it going?"
"It's all right," Jay said, "We're pretty much done with the first coats of the rooms upstairs. Buzz has been entertaining us by making a lot of noise."
Vanessa laughed, "I don't believe you."
"Well," Jay chuckled.
"Dada!" Blake yelled.
"There you go," Jay nodded and returned to the kitchen, "Guess who's here. Someone's here to see you."
Blake's face lit up when he saw Vanessa and he put his hands in the air.
"Hi!" Vanessa picked him up, "Hi, Buzz Lightyear, how're you?"
Blake laughed and kissed her.
"Oh, thank you, thank you so much," Vanessa laughed too and hugged him tightly.
Jay chuckled, "He's clearly excited."
"I'm excited too," Vanessa bounced Blake in her arms, "I can watch him for a bit if you wanted to go back upstairs."
"Are you sure?" Jay asked while already walking backwards to grab the water and granola bars for Kevin, Adam, and Will.
"Course," Vanessa tickled Blake's sides, "I like hanging out with him."
"Thought you were here to help with the rooms," Jay smirked.
Vanessa rolled her eyes and waved her free hand, "I'll help this way."
"Ah," Jay laughed, "Well, thank you, this will actually be a huge help."
Vanessa carried Blake to the couch, "We'll just hang out, right? We're best friends."
Jay smiled when Blake cheered and clapped for her. He grabbed the snacks then hurried back upstairs ready to finish up all the painting.
When the lights turned back on, Cara let out a long groan, "I wasn't ready!"
"But…but it can't be over," Drew sighed.
"It's not," Kim said quickly, "We just have a fifteen minute break. They'll be back."
Hailey nodded, "It's time for the actors to get a snack and go to the bathroom just like us."
"Oh," Drew sat up, "I guess that makes sense."
"I'm glad they're coming back because I am loving this," Cara said, "It is so much fun."
Kim smiled, "Really?"
Cara nodded quickly, "This is amazing. It's like TV in real life."
Hailey laughed, "What about you, Drew? Do you like it?"
He smiled too, "Yeah, it's fun. It's a little sad, though. I want Annie to have a family like me."
Hailey softened and hugged him to her side, "We do have a good family, don't we?"
"The best," Drew said.
Kim stood up, "Do either of you need to walk around or go to the bathroom?"
Cara shook her head, "Can I have your phone so I can buy these songs? I love them."
Kim passed it to her, "Drew?"
"No, I'm okay," Drew looked at Hailey, "Do you or Princess have to go to the bathroom?"
"We're actually okay," Hailey smiled. She stood, "I do want to call Dad, though, is that okay with you? I'm going to go stand in the hallway."
"If that's what you want," Drew shrugged.
"Be right back," Hailey said and kissed his head before hurrying out dialing Jay's phone number on the way.
Jay picked up on the second ring, "Hey, you okay?"
Hailey laughed softly and made her way to a corner, "Yeah, I'm okay. It's just intermission."
"Ah, makes sense."
"And you?" Hailey asked, "How're things there? Is Blake okay?"
"Blake misses you, but Vanessa came over and she's been distracting him while we paint and that's been a huge help, plus she got him to actually wear clothes today. I have him now, though, because I'm picking up lunch for everyone. Are you two taking the kids out after?"
"Wait, wait, what's wrong with Blake?"
"Hailey," Jay laughed, "Nothing's wrong. He's just a little whiny. He misses his mom, it's okay."
Hailey let out a breath, "Are you sure?"
"Positive." There was a quick pause and then Hailey could hear Jay saying, "It's Mom. Say 'hi' to Mommy."
"Mama?" Blake said.
Hailey smiled, "Hi, honey."
"Mama!" Blake screeched, "Mama!"
Hailey started laughing, "Hi! Are you being good for Daddy?"
Blake just giggled in response and kept repeating, "Mama."
"He looks very happy," Jay chuckled.
"Well, he loves me," Hailey teases.
"Why wouldn't he?" Jay jokingly asked, "I sure love you."
Hailey blushed even though Jay wasn't even there to see it, "Stop."
"Never," he chuckled, "How's Drew and the baby?"
"All good," Hailey took a deep breath, "Thank you for getting the tickets for us."
"Thank Kim."
Hailey rolled her eyes, "Jay."
"You're welcome, Hails."
She smiled and put her hand on her stomach where the baby was lightly kicking, "Princess says 'hi' too."
"Is she kicking?"
She couldn't see Jay, but Hailey knew he was smiling. "Mhmm," she hummed.
"I really like the pink, by the way," Jay added, "It's looking good. Adam and Will have been working on it. And Vanessa picked up those animal drawings. It's going to be the best nursery ever."
"Well, besides Blake's," Hailey corrected.
"Oh, obviously."
Hailey laughed softly and listened to Jay chuckling on the other end of the phone too. She started wishing he was there with her. She missed him which felt lame to think since they had been separated just about three hours and they'd definitely been without each other longer, but something stirred in her and all she wanted was a hug from her husband. She took a deep breath to avoid hanging up on him.
"You sure you're okay?"
Hailey nodded rubbing her stomach, "Yeah, yeah, I'm okay."
Jay didn't reply at first, then said, "See you soon?"
"Yeah," Hailey glanced back to the doorway to the theater, "I should get going. I just needed to stretch my legs."
"I love you."
Hailey bit her lip over a smile, "I love you too."
"Bye, wife."
Hailey laughed as Jay hung up the call. It relaxed her enough that she felt much better walking back into the theater and up to the seats.
Jay stuffed his phone in his pocket then stepped out of his truck to grab Blake and head into the deli to pick up the sandwiches. As he was walking toward it, though, he noticed a new store he'd never seen before right next door.
It had baby clothes in the front window along with a variety of what appeared to be handmade toys spread out. When he stepped closer, he could see even more toys, clothes, and nursery items inside.
Blake spotted a big stuffed dog similar to the one he had and clapped his hands together.
Jay smiled at him then decided to step in the store for just a minute before his sandwiches were ready.
"I loved it so much," Cara said while holding Kim's hand and skipping down the street toward the diner.
Drew nodded quickly, "That was so good. I'm really happy it had a happy ending. And! Annie got adopted on Christmas which is almost like me."
"She did," Hailey reached forward to grab his hand, "Should we go to more shows?"
Cara stopped walking and looked at her, "I saw that they have Frozen!"
Kim laughed, "Would you want to see that?"
"Obviously, Mommy," Cara sighed, "I love Frozen."
"You love a lot of things," Drew said.
"I have a big heart," Cara nodded.
Hailey smiled and opened the diner door for them, "Come on, you two, Princess wants a chocolate shake and some cheese fries."
"Princess isn't the only one," Kim led the way to a booth to the side, "That sounds amazing."
"Aunt Hailey, are you really going to name your baby Princess?" Cara asked.
Hailey shook her head and was about to answer when Drew rolled his eyes, "Really? No. Princess is an incomplete name. It's my nickname for the baby. I do have a list of real names though."
Hailey raised an eyebrow as she passed out the menus, "You have a list?"
"Of course," Drew nodded.
The waitress came with waters, two kids' menus, and a promise to be back in a minute for their orders.
Cara carefully sipped her drink then said, "Can I add names to your list? I think the baby should be named Annie."
Kim smiled, "Just like today, huh? It is a cute name."
"It's very cute," Hailey laughed softly, "Annie Halstead."
"Do you have a middle name picked out yet?" Kim asked.
"Maybe?" Hailey shrugged, "Jay's mom's middle name was Jane and I really like that. I think it could go with anything. He suggested Anne though like mine."
"Annie Anne Halstead," Cara giggled.
Hailey laughed with her, "Kind of silly, huh?"
Drew shook his head, "Annie's not on my list, so don't worry."
"What is on the list?" Cara put her elbows on the table and rested her chin on her hand.
"They're all fancy princess names," Drew explained, "I've been researching a lot. So-"
"Wait, wait," Hailey put a hand up, "Researching what?"
"Names," Drew stated.
Hailey sighed, "I know that, but…how?"
"My iPad," Drew said slowly, "Mom, what's going on?"
"Bud, I think she's wondering what exactly you're researching," Kim tried.
"Oh," Drew softened, "So I started with a list of royal people and then I needed to make sure they were Irish because Dad's Irish or they could be Greek because Mom's Greek."
Hailey's eyes widened, "You did that?"
"Yeah," Drew smiled, "It keeps me busy. I love researching, you know that."
Hailey weakly laughed, "I…yeah, I guess I did."
"Plus," Drew blew out a breath and looked at Cara, "Last time my parents got a baby, they tricked me. I wanted to name him Buzz, but apparently that's only a nickname, so they picked Blake."
Cara sighed and shook her head, "Unfortunate."
"I know," Drew swirled his straw around, "So I'm trying really hard this time. I really want to name this baby. I love her a lot even though I haven't seen her. I think it's cool that my mom and dad made a person."
Kim smiled at Hailey and tilted her head to the side.
Hailey shook her head in disbelief again and then softly asked, "What names are on your list?"
Drew was about to answer, but the waitress returned for their orders. He groaned and impatiently waited for her to leave before whispering, "Finally."
"Hey," Hailey patted his arm, "Be nice."
"I know, I know," Drew sighed. He took a deep breath, "Okay, well, I have Katherine, Margaret, Megan, Alexandra, Sophie, and my two favorites are Charlotte like Dad's mom and Penelope." He blushed, "I…I know Penelope isn't a princess name, but I like it because it's Greek and we could call her lots of things like Penny or Nellie or still Princess kind of like with Buzz."
"I love all of those," Hailey hugged him to her side, "Thank you so much for coming up with them."
Cara's eyes lit up, "You need to name her Sophie! That's one of my favorite names."
"Oh, really?" Kim said.
Cara nodded, "If someone is named Sophie, that means they're nice. It's a fact."
"Well," Kim looked at Hailey, "I think that's it then."
Hailey laughed, "Sounds like it."
Drew's face fell, "What? You're letting Cara make the final decision?"
"Oh, no," Hailey shook her head, "We're just joking. Cara made a good point, though, just like you did with Penelope."
Drew smiled slightly, "I've been working really hard."
"I can tell," Hailey nodded, "I'm going to tell Dad all of those names and he and I will talk about it."
"It's a big deal picking a name since you can't change it," Kim added, "It takes a lot of work and you helped your mom and dad with some of the hardest parts."
"That's wrong," Drew said, "I changed my last name and so did Cara."
"That was different," Hailey put her hand on his arm, "People change their last names a lot, but usually not their first names. For example, my old last name was Upton."
"Upton?" Cara scrunched her face, "Aunt Hailey Upton? Ew."
"Cara," Kim hissed.
"I like Detective Hailey Halstead better," Drew nodded.
"Yeah cause it has two H sounds," Cara said as if it was obvious, "Those are good sounds!"
Hailey laughed, "I'm glad you two approve of my name."
"Now you just have to approve my names," Drew smiled.
"How many months until we get to see this baby?" Cara asked.
"A little over three months," Hailey said, "She's going to be here at the end of June…hopefully. I do not want to be pregnant in July."
"Watch her come late," Kim joked.
Hailey rolled her eyes, "Ha ha." She then sighed and mumbled, "But I know you're right."
"Mhmm," Kim nodded, "I read that first pregnancies almost always go past the due date. You're in for a July baby."
"How'd she even get in there?" Cara looked down at her own stomach, "Did you swallow her?"
"My dad put her there," Drew said.
"Oh, wow," Cara breathed, "How?"
"No, no," Kim weakly laughed, "Let's not."
Hailey blushed, "Drew, remember, these are private conversations."
He nodded seriously, "I do remember. I wasn't going to tell her. We're having lunch and Dad said I can only talk to him about it."
"What is it?" Cara asked.
"A secret, ask your dad," Drew said.
"Okay," Cara shrugged.
Kim breathed in shakily then nearly finished her drink.
Hailey swallowed in relief and ran her hand through her hair.
"I have another question," Cara started, "How do I be in Annie? I think I'd be good at it."
The news played on the TV, but Jay and Adam weren't even paying attention to it. Will, Kevin, and Vanessa left about half an hour before after finishing painting the bedrooms minus the big stripe in Drew's room. They were all tired and partially sore from all the standing, bending, kneeling, and just painting in general. Even Blake fell asleep on Adam's chest with one arm wrapped around the new dog Jay had bought him earlier in the day.
Hailey pushed open the front door, "Hello? How's it going?"
Jay blinked a few times at the sound of everyone walking in then turned to look at them all. "Hey," he said.
"Daddy!" Cara ran over to Adam in the recliner, "I loved Annie! I loved it!"
He jerked awake from barely drifting off and sat up holding Blake to him, "What'd you say, Care-Bear?"
Kim laughed, "You two look exhausted."
"Feel exhausted," Jay yawned and rubbed his face. He put his hand out toward Drew, "Hey, bud, what'd you think?"
Drew finished taking his shoes off then hurried over to him on the couch, "It was a lot of fun. I want to go watch it again."
"Cool," Jay smiled and undid his tie for him.
Hailey picked up Blake from Adam's chest and softly cooed at him while cradling him in her arms, "Hi, baby boy."
"Here," Adam held up the new dog.
Hailey raised an eyebrow, but still grabbed it, "What's this?"
"I did some shopping," Jay put his feet up on the coffee table.
"Oh," Hailey perched on the arm of the couch, "Hey, you. How'd it go?"
"Looks pretty good if I do say so myself," Jay smiled.
"Especially the baby's room," Adam nodded.
Kim laughed softly and ran her hand over his hair, "I'm guessing that's what you did all day?"
"Most of the day," Adam chuckled.
"Drew wants to name her lots of names," Cara said.
"Yeah?" Jay asked.
Drew nodded, "I have a list. I told Mom. She said she'll tell you."
"All right," Jay slowly nodded.
Adam stood up, "We should get going, ladies." He picked up Cara, "Jay, nice working with you. Tell that little trouble maker I'll see him soon."
"Trouble maker?" Hailey's eyes widened.
Jay made a big show of rolling his eyes then waved at Adam, "Thanks for everything today."
"Not a problem," Adam walked out with Kim and Cara closing the door behind him.
"Did Buzz get in trouble?" Drew asked.
"He tried," Jay shrugged and stood, "Come on, I'll show you what we did."
"Jay," Hailey said.
"He's fine," Jay kissed her cheek, "He didn't eat the paint. Kevin grabbed him in time."
Hailey stared after him with her mouth gaping open. She looked down at Blake and noticed that there was some blue paint on his right hand. She gasped quietly then hurried after Drew and Jay.
"I approve," Drew was saying and nodding along as he looked at his room.
"Awesome," Jay smiled. He walked over to a spot on the wall near the closet, "We were thinking that the stripe will be here. Uncle Will's gonna come over tomorrow to help me finish it."
"It's going to be so cool," Drew said.
"I think so too," Jay chuckled.
"I like it," Hailey said from the doorway. She met Jay's eyes then tilted her head to the side before lifting up Blake's hand, "Can we talk, sergeant?"
Drew snorted and covered his mouth.
Jay's face fell and he slowly walked over to her, "He didn't eat it."
"You said you'd keep him away from the paint," Hailey hissed.
"Vanessa was helping with this room and he hated the pack-n-play," Jay said, "And we hated listening to him scream."
Hailey sighed, "Jay, he's a baby. He could have gotten sick."
"But he didn't," Jay smiled wide, "He's safe!"
Hailey rolled her eyes and walked out to Blake's room. She slightly smiled at the blue paint on the walls as she set the still sleeping Blake in his pack-n-play.
"Hailey," Jay said while walking in, "I know we were just painting, but it was hard to watch him and do that at the same time. Fine, he walked over and stuck his hand in the paint, but Kevin stopped him and we immediately washed as much off as we could. Are you really going to let that one little moment ruin this whole day?"
She pursed her lips and crossed her arms looking back down at Blake. She let out a breath then said quietly, "Okay."
Jay rubbed his hands over her shoulders before setting one on her baby bump, "Thank you."
Hailey stepped toward him to look up at him then hugged him tightly.
Jay relaxed and held her closer for a moment. He kissed the top of her head then said, "Want to see what I got for the baby?"
Hailey laughed softly, "You got stuff for the baby, too?"
"Yeah," Jay smiled and grabbed her hand to pull her to the nursery. It was empty besides the few bags from Vanessa in the middle near the one bag Jay had brought in there. He helped Hailey sit on the carpet next to him then pulled over his bag, "So, you saw Blake's new dog downstairs, but I also got Princess a cat to match."
Hailey laughed as he passed her a big crocheted cat in a similar style as Blake's dog, "I love it. It's so cute. It's going to be bigger than her."
"I know," Jay chuckled, "Blake's is almost bigger than him." He pulled out a smaller crocheted monster, "I picked out this one for Drew just so he could have something too."
"Perfect," Hailey nodded with a smile.
"And I swear that was all I was going to buy," Jay took a deep breath, "But then I saw this," he handed Hailey a mobile with grey birds hanging from it and clouds, "And I thought it'd match all the stuff you've been talking about."
"Oh, Jay," Hailey breathed. She held it up and watched the clouds and birds slowly spin in the air, "It's perfect."
Jay smiled, "I'm glad you like it."
Hailey kissed him quickly, "Thank you. This is all-"
"Wait," Jay dumped the bag out, "I bought some dresses too. I hope you like them, I know I might not be the most fashionable person, but these are pretty cute, right?"
Hailey stared at the three outfits on the carpet. Her fingers shook slightly as she picked each one up to look at it – a denim one with little dinosaurs embroidered all over it, a navy corduroy one that had flowers and mice in bows along the bottom, and then a white one with ducks on it and a matching blue diaper cover. She swallowed a lump in her throat then quickly wiped the tears that had begun forming in her eyes.
"Do you like them?" Jay asked quietly.
Hailey weakly laughed, "Jay."
He smiled slightly, "Yeah?"
"They're perfect," Hailey hugged him, "Thank you, oh my gosh." She sniffled and looked back down at the dresses, "She's going to look so cute."
"Yeah, I'm trying to accept that we made a heartbreaker," Jay said.
Hailey rolled her eyes laughing again. She kissed his cheek, "It'll be okay."
Jay wiped her eyes, "Drew said you know the names he picked?"
Hailey smiled and nodded, "He came up with some good ones that I hadn't thought of and I think he might have even picked a winner."
"Really?" Jay leaned back on his hands, "Lay them on me."
"Let's see," Hailey pulled out her phone, "I had him tell me them again in the car so I wouldn't forget. Okay, we have Katherine, Margaret, Megan, Alexandra, Sophie, Charlotte, and Penelope which he'd like me to add has nicknames like Penny and Nellie."
Jay smiled, "Charlotte, huh? Should have known that'd come back. Actually, I like Megan and Sophie too; they're simple. Penelope's a little long, but I kind of like it; it's different. I'm just going to veto Katherine, Alexandra, and Margaret right now."
Hailey laughed, "That's fine with me. I think those were my least favorite too."
Jay nodded, "So those are our options?"
"For now," Hailey said, "He really wants this. I'm sure he'd come up with new options if we need them. He was saying he loves her and thinks it's cool that we made her. I think we should give him this."
Jay raised an eyebrow, "Her name?"
Hailey bit her lip and nodded.
Jay sat up to grab her hand, "I think that's a pretty cool idea, as long as we get final say. We could definitely involve him more this time around."
Hailey smiled, "I like that and I think he will too."
Jay brushed his thumb over her knuckles, "Do you have a favorite?"
Hailey looked down at her stomach, "I think so. I was saying all of them with your mom's middle name-"
"And yours?" Jay cut her off, "I'd really like if we considered your name too."
"We can do that," Hailey squeezed his hand, "Jane or Anne could match any of them, but I think there is one that sounds the best. We still have so much time, though, that I don't want to make a final decision yet."
"But just tell me," Jay nudged her side, "What's going through your head?"
Hailey couldn't stop the smile on her face and took a deep breath before telling him.
That night, cuddled up in bed, Hailey finally slept for more than four hours at a time. Because of the paint smells in their rooms, Drew and Blake slept between her and Jay, but it was fine. It made Hailey happier than she could have imagined. Even though Jay buying the baby clothes stirred something in side of her, she didn't mind waiting a night to have him to herself because here he was in dad mode right next to her.
On the other hand, Jay stayed awake the longest. It wasn't necessarily insomnia, though, just him watching everyone sleep within his bed. He continuously rubbed one hand over Hailey's stomach occasionally smiling when he'd feel the baby stir inside of her and kept the other on Drew's back. He felt at peace with his family right there in front of him where they belonged.
A/N: Hi :) Gosh, I've been working on this one for a while but I really hope you liked it. I think I probably decided on the baby's name, but then started having second thoughts again so the solution is to keep it a secret until she's born – oops! Anyways, I went down a Pinterest rabbit hole with this one, so a lot of the stuff I reference like the toys and clothes and some of the room stuff, I'll put together in a thread on my twitter account if you're interested (onecpd14). Also, I know I've been posting a ton of oneshots for Upstead week, but trust me, I didn't forget about you all here. This just grew into something kind of crazy and has taken longer than I thought – hope you don't mind. Ok, sorry for talking too long. See you soon!
