I know I have other stories that I should probably focus on but I wanted to get this out and see how it goes. Just a self-insert OC who looks exactly like Merlin from Fate because why not, my grammar and whatnot sucks butt and I'm bad at original content but I wanted to write this down. And I'm not an expert on the classes for overlord, especially specific levels for classes but this guy is:
Race: Half Incubus
Druid: (10)
High Druid: (10)
Magus of Flowers: (5)
Wizard: (10)
High Wizard: (5)
Runesmith: (5)
Sage: (10)
Alchemist: (10)
Sword Fighter: (5)
Illusionist: (5-10) Idk what the levels for that are
Also a few titles and racial levels, or whatever they are, that will be mentioned throughout the story. Couldn't give you exact levels, even though I tired, but he will primarily be a buff class since he's a sage and druid but still has combat spells. Don't eat my booty hole if I get stuff messed up, I simply do not know everything about the overlord classes.

There wasn't a person in the world who hadn't at least heard the name of the popular DMMORPG, Yggdrasil. The game has been out for a while and had attracted thousands upon thousands of gamers because of its extremely high levels of customization and incredible story. Obviously a game like this had a beta where a group of a few hundred or a thousand people needed to test the game. One of these people is who our story starts with.
Sitting atop a rock in the main realm, or Midgard, was a man who stared into the night sky and was listening to a river flow right by him 'Really makes you wish it was real' the figure sighed. The 'real' world essentially went to shit since there was toxic smog, acid rain and all the fun stuff that came with pollution. Couldn't even leave a building without a special suit or a gas mask.
The figure blinked his purple eyes as he hopped off the rock and walked over to the river and peered inside. A man with purple eyes, a white robe that looked like it was made out of the finest silk, adorned with flowers and pins with a black short sleeved body suit underneath, black boots with gold trims and long white hair that was held in place by pink flower pins. The player tapped his wooden magical staff with coloured ribbons onto the water causing ripples that distorted his image. When he turned his back to the river he brought his hand up and swiped it down which revealed a game menu. 'It's pretty late and I need to get up for work tomorrow so I should probably get some sleep' his finger was just about to press the logout button but a sound caused his finger to stop. "Hmm?" he hummed as a few player icons showed up on his map and were on the edge of his senses. 'Not many people around this specific area since its low level. New player's maybe?' he shook his head and was about to press the log out button again when he heard laughing in the distance.
"Haha! Get em!"
"C'mon Mr. Lich! No use running!"
"Were gonna kill you till your character gets deleted!"
The robbed player let out a tired sigh 'Heteromorph PKers? Probably stalking low leveled areas and they found themselves a target.' He stood there for another moment before closing his menu and turning to the noise "Well… time to play hero" the robbed player soon set off.
.
.
.
We now find ourselves deep in the forest following a brown cloaked figure, he ran for his life as the jeering and footsteps became louder. 'C'mon man I almost got to level thirty and I'm back down to five! I just wanna play the game!' a magic spell flew right past his head 'I just freaking got this game, why!' the cloaked figure being chased broke through the tree line but tripped and fell to the ground. 'Damn it!' with a clear view of the players face we could see that it was not human at all. A face completely devoid of flesh looked back into the forest, two glowing red orbs replaced the eyes of the skeleton as he looked at the tree line.
"Well well… looks like the little lich fell down"
"Thought you could run again?"
Five figures emerged from the forest, one was a hooded rouge wielding two daggers, a large lion/beastman character with big shoulder pauldrons, a dark knight wielding a large axe, another knight wielding a glaive and a woman fairy wearing light armour.
"Heh… Just a little more xp and I can level up" spoke the axe knight
The glaive knight sighed "C'mon man let's just kill em already, we got shit to do"
"Yea yea" the axe knight responded
"Damn inhuman" Muttered the glaive knight while an emoji with a tongue sticking out appeared by his head.
A devilish looking emoji appeared by the axe knight "I'll fix that dumb mug" he slowly raised his axe to deliver the final blow.
'I give up' the skeleton looked up at the knight as he was about to bring the axe down 'No point in playing a dumb heteromorph if this is gonna happen.'
"I don't think that will be happening today" a transparent barrier flashed in front of the downed player and blocked the axe strike which caused a small ripple to flow across the barrier.
'What the?' Is someone actually saving me?' the lich turned his view to look behind him but didn't see the caster. 'Where is he?' he looked all around but didn't see anything, no matter how hard he tried looking.
"What the hell!? A caster?" the large lion man looked to the rogue "can you see anything?"
The rogue shook his head "Whoever he is he's not showing on my radar or anything so he's concealing himself with some kind of spell"
"Probably a high level heteromorph caster if he's helping this guy" spoke the fairy women as she looked around and got ready to fight.
What seemed like minutes passed by as the group of five PKers looked around in search of the caster. They all knew it was a bad idea giving the caster even ten seconds to prepare but they didn't know where he was so all plans went out the window. The silence was broken by the ground rumbling slightly as a bunch of vines with pink flowers, burst from the ground and went to entangle the group. The hooded rogue and two knights easily evaded the vines but the big lion man and the fairy were caught. Beastman went to break the vines with pure force but the vines didn't budge.
"What the hell!? If it's just a druid, how are these vines so strong!" he shouted.
"Damn" said the glaive knight "Probably a high druid, we're not dealing with a low level here"
There was then a large fire ball that engulfed the two trapped in the vines and easily dropped their HP to zero. "From just a fireball!? Is this guy level one hundred?! What the hell is he doing here!?" the axe knight shouted.
"Over there!" shouted the rogue as he pointed at a cluster of trees "The fireball came from there!"
The remaining three rushed the area in hopes of being able to attack the caster before he had more time to prepare. The rogue ran across the clearing ahead of the group but as he stepped in a specific spot, a pink glowing rune lit up under him before a large explosion went off dropping his HP to zero.
"Shit! He's got runes too!" shouted the glaive knight "We should retreat!" the axe knight agreed begrudgingly, the two PKers tried to retreat and were about to run past the downed lich.
"Not before we get him!" shouted the axe knight as he brought his weapon down.
"Not so fast!" said an almost knightly voice as a figure in shining platinum white armour, with a helm that looked like an insects head with mandibles and the chest piece having a large red gem in the center of his chest. A red cape billowed in the wind as the knightly figure rushed the two and easily cut them down with his sword and he didn't even bother using his shield to defend. The two died in one hit and were dissolved into motes of light, just like their comrades had.
The lich on the ground seeing all of this was stunned "W-why did you save me?"
"Saving people is just the right thing to do!" he shouted while striking a heroic pose as a bunch of emoji's and some text saying Hero of Justice appeared. The lich seemed confused and would've sweat dropped if he could "Isn't that right Mr. Caster."
'Oh right the caster' the lich stood and turned to where he thought the caster was, a figure shimmered into existence a few meters from him.
The caster was revealed to be the same player we were following just a moment ago "I was relaxing in the area and was about to log out, just happened to hear what was going on" he spoke.
"But you helped" spoke the lich "Thank you so much"
The caster waved his hand and smiled as an embarrassed emoji appeared "Don't worry about it"
"So who are you guys?" asked the lich looking at them.
"Ah how silly of me" spoke the knight "I am the hero of justice Touch-Me!" the two others went silent as the caster stifled a chuckle at that sentence but sort of failed since it was pretty audible.
The caster cleared his throat "My character name is Merlin" Merlin bowed slightly and had a smile emoji appear.
"Woah, how did you snag a name like that? I'm Momonga by the way" spoke the lich
"I was a beta tester and snagged the name as soon as I could"
"You beta tested Yggdrasil?" spoke Momonga in slight awe
Touch-Me then spoke up "I believe I've heard of you, you were a beta tester and became one of the first few players to reach level one hundred and have been known throughout the game" Touch-Me chuckled. "I've even hear the title of [Grand Caster] thrown around".
The caster chuckled in response "I may have been here a while but I'm no [World Champion]" he said while directing his gaze to Touch-Me. Momonga's head whipped to Touch-Me and then back to Merlin, poor guy was stunned and didn't know what to think. "Well I need to log off for the night" he brought his hand up and opened his menu "But before I go" he swiped his finger a few times before there were a few flashes of light in front of Momonga, when the light died down it revealed three items. "I can tell you're a caster so here is a wooden staff with a rune that can essentially let you cast a fireball, that's roughly around the fifth tier three times before it has to cooldown for an hour or so, basically a [Grand Fireball]. And two rings, one to increase your defence a bit and another to increase MP regen. I enchanted them myself a long time ago so you're welcome to use them until you level back up again."
Momonga was speechless as he looked at the items "Why would you just give me these? Don't you need them?"
Merlin waved his hand "No, I have better stuff on me and in my inventory, I also enchanted these a long time ago so it's not like it's legendary or divine tier" Momonga thanked him and added them to his inventory before he equipped them.
"Before you go" spoke Touch-Me as he brought up his menu "Let me add you guys" he said while sending a friend request which the other two accepted "I started up a clan and I wouldn't mind if you guys want in. It's a group dedicated to help against PKers and to protect the weak" He glanced at Merlin. "I heard on a forum somewhere that you were secretly a heteromorph or something of the like so you'd be more than welcome to join if you are"
Merlin nodded "I'll have to think about it, I have a few people I play with sometimes and I'm not really a clan/guild person. I more or less form parties and join raids" he then waved a final goodbye before disappearing in a flash.

2 days later
Two days had passed since the player Merlin had met Momonga and Touch-Me, he was working so he couldn't get on the past few days but now he had time. After Merlin, or twenty two year old Sato Nakamura as he was known IRL made it home, had a small meal and went towards his room. He was an average man in all areas, with a decent height of around five foot ten, short black hair and a slightly above average build. Sato lived alone in a fairly small apartment, it was fairly Spartan in terms of furniture and design but Sato didn't really care for those things. It was only his room that had some sort of 'life' to it. There were a few game posters along the walls, his gaming setup, a bed and a bookshelf stacked with his favourite manga. It wasn't for a lack of money but he just liked to live simple and clean. Plus it was cheap.
Sato headed towards his computer and turned it on after two days of not even looking at it 'No important notifications' he thought while quickly catching up on messages and such. It wasn't until he got to notifications for Yggdrasil, that he saw a message from the lich Momonga that was sent about a half hour ago.
Momonga: Hey, if you're not busy could you help me? I need help clearing this one dungeon and I've had to retreat a few times already. You don't have to carry me, just need some buffs and support just in case.
Merlin: Sure, just got home I'll hop on now
With the message sent, Sato sat down in his chair and attached his headset so he could dive in to Yggdrasil. With a quick confirmation to be spawned next to Momonga, Sato fully relaxed as he felt the familiar feeling of his mind almost drifting off into nothing. When he opened his eyes he glanced at his surroundings and still saw that he was still in Midgard.
"Ah Merlin thanks for coming" Merlin turned his head and saw the familiar face of the lich standing behind him and he looked a bit different. The brown cloak that he wore before was now replaced with a blue one, he had a few more rings and even a necklace with a red gem. He was still was using the items that Merlin had gave him as well. "The difficulty of this dungeon has been raised momentarily for higher rewards to low level players so I thought I'd give it a try and I almost died three times"
Merlin looked at where they were "This is the dungeon that has a golem at the end. If I'm remembering right"
He received a nod "I can get the thing down to almost a quarter of its HP but the second phase is what really throws me off"
Merlin chuckled "I remember this dungeon from the beta and the beginning of the game. The beta version of it was cruel" a strained smile emoji popped up.
"What was different?"
"You know how its second phase increases its defence?" he received a nod "Well in the beta, he went invulnerable at random intervals and regained half his max HP"
If only a video game skeleton avatar could wince "That's just cruel for a low level player or party"
Merlin nodded "By the way what level are you now?"
"I was reduced to around five when you and Touch-Me saved me and I've managed to get to where I was before, so thirty"
"That's pretty impressive for two days. Once you get to level seventy or so, that's when it gets annoying to level"
"Kind of like a soft cap?" the skeleton asked
"Somewhat" Merlin turned to the entrance, it was a classic large cave opening that seemed to lead to nothing but darkness. "So you deal with all the ads and I just help if it gets hairy?"
The skeleton nodded "I more or less need help for the boss fight"
Merlin nodded "I think this place is recommended to be around level twenty-five so what's it recommended for the increase?"
"Around thirty to forty with a party of at least two or three"
A surprised emoji popped up by the white haired mage "Your level thirty and have almost cleared it yourself?"
An embarrassed emoji appeared by the lich as he scratched the back of his head "PvE is sort of my specialty and I'm usually pretty good at prepping for dungeons and stuff. Being a necromancer who can raise the dead and have minions fight for me is a big bonus. Not to mention the decently high level items and experience I've been gaining from mob drops" he then gestured to his gear. "The things you gave me and the few magic items I found have really helped".
"Still for a necromancer to get this far on your own, even before you got hunted, is still incredibly impressive" Merlin said with a small amount of praise which caused an embarrassed emoji to appear next to Momonga once again. "Might as well give you some buffs now" Merlin said while bringing his staff out in front of him with two hands. Wind seemed to pick up around him as his hair and cloak flowed. "[Anti-Evil Protection] [Rabbit Foot] [Greater Luck] [Reinforce Armour] [Protection from Arrows]" with each spell chanted, magic circles of varying colour appeared beneath Momonga and bathed him in light.
Momonga took a quick glance at all of his stats "This will help a lot. Thank you" His avatar bowed slightly.
"Don't worry about it. They should last for the duration of the dungeon, mostly just boosted your luck and defense" Merlin then set off with Momonga into the dungeon.
The first part of the dungeon was a literal cave so the two were walking for a minute or two until they reached an opening. Once the area opened up, they were now in front of a small chasm that had a small bridge over to the next area. The chasm itself on both sides of the bridge dropped at least a hundred feet and was pitch black.
"The gargoyles at the front here are pretty easy to deal with so I'll deal with it" Momonga said while he was about to cast a spell.
Merlin then put his staff out to stop him "Do you know about the shortcut?"
"There's a shortcut here?"
Merlin nodded "Usually fighting the gargoyles hidden in the shadows will put the rest of the place on alert if you're not careful which I'm sure you know".
"Yeah I know about that"
"But over there" Merlin pointed to his right where there was seemingly nothing "There's a shortcut".
"Even with my dark vision I don't see anything"
"It's probably just a bit too far out of your range [Mage Light]" Merlin cast a spell as a small glowing ball of white light floated towards the area he pointed at. The small light went well over one hundred feet and stopped when it hit a wall and stuck there. With the wall illuminated, a ledge could be seen that was big enough for someone to stand on.
"Wow" Momonga muttered "I would've never guessed"
Merlin chuckled "I've done this dungeon plenty of times so I've learned a few tricks along the way". Merlin then looked back to Momonga "Can you fly yet?"
Momonga shook his head "I've had to pick other spells to help with PvE and haven't really picked up some of the smaller spells".
"Alright then" Merlin swiped his hand to open his menu "I have a lot of these back at my usual base so feel free to have it. After a few presses on his menu, a small light appeared before a necklace appeared in front of Momonga. It was a fairly low level necklace that had a blue gem which was shaped like a wing.
"Wow. Thank you" a happy face emoji appeared next to Momonga "I feel bad that I can't give you anything back…"
Merlin waved him off before casting [Fly] on himself "Don't worry about it. You can pay me back later. When you've played the game for as long as I have, you don't start getting generous or anything. You just wait until you come across something new or an opportunity to do an old thing again but more different and fun".
Momonga didn't really know how to respond to that, so he just equipped the necklace and followed him over to the ledge that was still illuminated. The ledge itself was barely big enough to fit the two so Merlin flew back off of the ledge and remained floating. "Now the rest is going to be up to you. I don't want to spoil too much but feel free to call upon me if you need me".
.
The process of getting to the boss wasn't too bad for Momonga. With Merlin pointing out a few shortcuts to save time and Momonga using lower tier undead as distractions. Both Merlin and Momonga made it to the boss within twenty minutes, which was a record for Momonga.
A large set of double doors stood before the two and was illuminated by four torches that only shed light on the door itself. The doors were massive, easily being over forty feet tall and made of solid iron. Momonga looked to Merlin who only nodded. Momonga then walked up to the door and it opened automatically.
The doors creaked and groaned fiercely as they grinded on the stone floor. Momonga was the first to walk through the door and was closely followed by Merlin. Darkness surrounded the two to the point where a normal person wouldn't even be able to see their hands directly in front of them. But with both players being heteromorph's, they were able to see relatively well.
Suddenly the room was bathed in dim light as torches sprung to life along the walls of the room. The room itself was fairly barren and was mostly just stone, with stone pillars in each corner of the room. A workspace was barely visible at the back of the room, it consisted mostly of alchemic supplies and other stuff that you would see in a boss room. Not to mention the massive thirty foot tall stone golem covered in moss. It didn't seem to be active.
"Who is the one to disturb my work?" A soothe voice spoke from the back end of the room. A dark skinned figure wearing a cloak emerged from the shadows. His head held no hair and the green cloak he wore was covering up green attire underneath. "I would kindly ask you to leave and all would be forgotten". Merlin and Momonga showed no signs of leaving "I see… In that case, I'll have to have you removed".
With a snap of his fingers, the eyes of the golem sprung to life and emanated a green glow "GROAHHHH!" the golem practically roared as it slowly started to move. The room was more than large enough to house the creature as it stood to its full height.
"Alright just one more time…" Momonga muttered to himself. He then extended his staff "[Summon Undead] [Summon Undead 3rd] [Slow]". Momonga called out his spell as a fairly decent amount of lower tier undead were summoned and [Slow] was casted on the Golem to slow its movements.
"That's a decent chunk of Mana being used at your current level" Merlin commented from his right "And using two tier three spells may get risky as well".
"I know. But I need the time to use my [Rite of Darkness] ritual trait"
"So you plan to just overwhelm the golem and keep it debuffed?"
Momonga nodded "I'll cast my own spells and use the fire balls from the staff you gave me to do bigger chunks. "And once the ritual is done" he started to prepare "I can get some more buffed undead to distract it even further while I hit it with first and second tier spells".
All of Momonga's undead were engaged with the Golem at this point and were slowly starting to lower the boss' HP. With Momonga directing his summons against the slowed down Golem and with his [Rite of Darkness] trait the came up, the Golem was in for trouble. This continued for a few minutes with Momonga having to replenish his undead and continuously cast small debuffs. [Rite of Darkness] was certainly useful for him in order to get that good damage in and not have to keep adding more summoned undead.
But his magic was dwindling by this point and having to manage it all was getting incredibly difficult. He was doing better with the minor buffs he received from Merlin, but it was still a struggle. With the boss now around half his HP, the second phase began.
"You have done well to make it this far" spoke the golem's master "But you shall not succeed. For I am the greatest golem master!"
With a clap of his hands, the golem started to shake before random pieces of metal flew from the golem master's workshop and on to the golem itself. The golem's main areas, which were his head, torso, arms and legs were now covered in plates of thick metal. It roared once more before it raised its arms and slammed into the ground causing all of Momonga's summons to be outright destroyed.
"That didn't happen last time…" Momonga deadpanned.
"Probably because I'm here" Merlin looked to the golem "On some dungeons, the difficulty is raised to a certain degree depending on the amount of people in it".
"Don't know how I'm going to deal with this now"
"Don't worry I got you covered" a smiling emoji appeared next to Merlin "First off" he directed his staff to the golem master. "[Paralysis]" he spoke out as the golem master seized movement "After the Golem is defeated or is about to die, he will intervene". Merlin then looked to Momonga "[Greater Resistance] [Greater Luck] [Magic Boost] [Rabbit foot]" rays of multi coloured light encompassed Momonga with each spell. "Now go get em" Merlin then stepped back with a thumbs up emoji.
"Thanks again" Momonga responded with his own smile and a thumbs up. Momonga raised his hand and cast a spell "[Lightning]!" A bolt of lightning sprung forth and slammed into the golem causing it to lose a decent chunk of health. "Good thing he has metal on in the second phase" Momonga muttered as he dodged a swing from the golem. Now that it was covered in thick metal, the golem moved a tad bit slower and Momonga's [Slow] was still in effect. Not to mention the speed boost he had gotten from Merlin helped a lot.
With the golem open to an attack, he raised the fireball staff that Merlin had given him a few days ago and casted all three uses of a 5th tier strength fireball and lowered the golem's HP to the point where only a few more hits would do the trick.
But after the golem was hit with the fireballs, [Slow] had worn off and the golem recovered quicker than Momonga had anticipated. It raised its metallic fist and managed to land a hit on Momonga and sent his avatar skidding back. Merlin winced a little as he saw Momonga's HP decrease by half from just one hit.
'Guess the bludgeoning vulnerability of a skeleton can really suck. Good thing I boosted his defence or else he could've been one shot' Merlin thought as he observed 'should probably stop the charging golem'.
The golem was about to reach Momonga but its large fist was stopped by a wall of pink flowers. When the golem tried to remove its hand, it couldn't. The wall was holding onto its hand and was preventing it from moving. Merlin shared a look with Momonga "Should have enough mana for one more [Lightning]"
"Right! [Lightning]!" Momonga shouted out before another bolt of lightning struck the golem for the final time. The wall of flowers slowly dissipated as the golem tumbled back before falling on its back and falling apart into large chunks of rock. Momonga took a moment to compose himself from the adrenalin, but once he did, he made his way over to Merlin.
"Good thing you had me here" Merlin said with a smile emoji.
"Probably would've legitimately died that time" Momonga responded with a half depressed face emoji.
"I'm sure if you power levelled for another five to ten levels you would've been fine" Merlin then glanced at the still paralyzed golem master.
"Surprised he's still paralyzed" Momonga approached the golem master.
"Being level one hundred certainly has its fair share of perks" Merlin responded before he raised his hands "[Flower Coffin]" he muttered as pink flowers slowly crawled up the golem master. He was covered within seconds.
"An oddly named spell" Momonga muttered.
"It's not available to just any wizard or druid" Merlin's fist clenched as the flowers literally crushed the golem master to death before small amounts of blue light filtered through the flowers, which signalled the golem masters death. "It's a special skill available to only one of my special job classes. And I'm pretty sure I'm the only one that has it".
"Wow" Momonga muttered as a 'Congratulations!' notification popped up in front of the two. "I wonder if I can get a class like that".
Merlin glanced at Momonga before sorting his loot "I'd recommend sticking to whatever you got going on now".
"Really?"
"Definitely. If you stick on the path of necromancy and focus on a PvE build revolved around summoning and eventually instant death spells. You could possible get the rare [Eclipse] job level and the [Overlord] class to grant insane boosts to that kind of stuff. But you'd have to be fully invested in necromancy and get the Overlord class".
"But what about PvP stuff? Shouldn't I put some levels in that?"
Merlin shrugged "It's all up to you. But you don't need a PvP build to be good at PvP. If you master what you have and play it smart. You can win battles against some top tiers. Just not perfected PvP builds being used by a master like Touch-Me".
"I guess that makes sense…" Momonga muttered while still sorting through his loot "What about you though?"
"What about me?" a question mark emoji appeared.
"What is your build centered on?"
"Hmm… mostly buffing since I have sage and druid levels. But I try to avoid PvP. I'm not terrible at it, considering I got the [Grand Caster] title a while ago, but I just don't like fighting other players if I don't have to".
"I see…"
"So how much EXP did you get?"
"I went up five levels from the boss fight"
Merlin whistled "Not bad" the two then closed their menu "I need to get going, got some stuff to get ready for work tomorrow. Might not be on for a little bit".
"I understand. Thank you again for helping me" Momonga bowed a little.
"No need to thank me but your welcome" Merlin waved before putting his hand on Momonga's shoulder "There's nothing left in here so I'll teleport us out and be on my way". The two were then enveloped in a flash of pink and disappeared.

2 Months Later
Sato Nakamura was tired. It had been two months since he had been able to even think about taking a break or getting time off. Sato let out a sigh as he opened the door to his apartment and putting all of his stuff away "I got the next two days off so I'm going to enjoy it" he muttered out. With a couple of stretches to pop his stiff joints, Sato made his way to the bedroom.
Once he was inside his room, it was like a weight was lifted from his shoulders. He plopped himself down into his chair and booted up his computer. It's not like he hadn't been on it in two months, but just haven't done anything with it in two months.
He checked all his messages and updates for shows as well as games that would happen in the future. Nothing interesting was going to happen within the next few months so Sato just decided to hop back on Yggdrasil to see if anyone was online. After placing his headset on, he dived into the game. When he awoke, he was inside his home base.
His base wasn't a conventional one, it was a large tower tucked away in a corner of the realmÁlfheim, the realm of the elves. His base wasn't a tight kept secret, but no one really knew where it was so that was a bonus. Of course his friends knew where to find his base. The tower itself wasn't just an ordinary tower. It was hidden through runes, among other things, so not just any random person would be able to see it unless they were right in front of it. The bottom of the tower levitated a few meters above the ground and spiralled up for a few more meters before it started to straighten. Multiple segments of the tower jutted out until it reaches the pointed peak. But before the tower peaked, there was a small observatory of sorts that people could use to look out. It was made mostly of a gray stone that had highlights of blue and pink, especially at the top where both colours melded together.
Merlin walked to the edge of the tower and observed his surroundings. He took a breath and just stood there for a bit in order to admire the beauty of Álfheim. The rays of the 'morning sun' bathed the area in an enchanting light. Birds could be heard chirping throughout the forests nearby, rivers off in the distance could be heard and small creatures littered the area. Mostly squirrels and other little creatures, but they were only there for aesthetics and only served the purpose of food for a small buff. At least a kilometer of the surrounding area was littered with flowers of varying colour, mostly shades of pink and light blue.
'Really makes you wish this could all be real' he thought solemnly 'If only I could truly feel the breeze and the rays of sunlight'.
Merlin's peace was interrupted by a sight he had never seen before. Something off in the distance of Álfheim seemed wrong but he couldn't quite see.
With a quick spell to enhance his vision, he could see a mass of black slowly overtaking an area 'What the heck is that? Is it some sort of event?'
Even with the enhanced vision, it still wasn't enough to get an accurate view. He then quickly went to the middle of the area he was in and stood in front of a mirror, a mirror of remote viewing. It was essentially a magic mirror that let others see locations way further than they could ever see. The mirror itself was about a meter high and surrounded in a bronze frame that covered the edges of its oval like shape. It was easy for players to evade its searches, but to survey an unexplored area made it a pretty balanced item.
As if he was controlling a virtual map, Merlin slid his hands over the mirror until he had a bird's eye view of the area he was trying to see before. But instead of a lush green forest, he was met with a black fog that was slowly spreading from a river.
"What the heck? This is some weird event…" he muttered to himself. The fog continued to spread at a relatively slow rate but was expanding all the same. He zoomed in the mirror to see if there was anything to observe, but didn't really see anything other than rotting plants and the black fog.
'Might as well go and investigate'
Since Merlin was an incubus and no one was around, two black wings sprouted from his back as he flew out of the tower and started to fly towards it. The mass of black fog was a fair ways away, so it took some time for Merlin to get there. He made sure to land a fair ways away from it, just in case someone was already there or he would be attacked by an NPC.
When he got within a few dozen meters of the black fog, a notification popped up on his HUD to inform him that his [Poison Resistance] skill was activated.
'So this stuff has a passive AOE that deals poison damage' Merlin thought to himself as he got closer to the mass of fog. More warning notifications kept popping up on his HUD and were warning him of the extremely high levels of poison in the area. 'Good thing Incubi have a high resistance to poison. Not to mention some of my items'.
Oddly enough, nothing was triggering his radar, so whatever was going on, something could be using anti-detection magic. Just to be safe, Merlin had casted [Anti-Information Magic Wall] among a few others to hide himself from detection magic. Also a few spells like [Magic Shield] just in case he was attacked and had a [Delay Teleport] spell at the ready in case he needed to retreat.
The further he got to the center of the cloud, the more intense the poison was. The poison was only being blocked because of a few items he had on himself, as well as his poison resistance from his race. 'I doubt anything but heteromorphs would likely die to this poison within minutes unless they were level one hundred'.
After carefully traversing the black fog, Merlin eventually found himself in the 'eye of the storm' so to speak. It certainly didn't seem calm in the middle, considering that the grass, trees and plants were all pitch black and wilted. He then directed his gaze in front of him and immediately readied his staff.
Crouched by a river, was what Merlin assumed to be an NPC. They were absolutely massive even when crouched over. The figure was shrouded in a black mist that made it nearly impossible to see. [Detect Life] and [Discern Enemy] only confirmed that this was indeed a boss, and a tough one at that. Its exact level was still hidden, but was shown to be over one hundred. [Detect Life] confirmed it was a living creature, but any other detection spells weren't working on the creature or person.
Slowly the thing stood up to its full height, and easily surpassed nine feet in height. It slowly turned around and faced Merlin directly, seemingly able to see through his anti- detection magic.
'That is not good. I'm no ninja, but still troubling'.
The only thing to see of the creature, was a green glow emanating from the black fog that surrounded it and an item was barely visible in what Merlin assumed to be its hand. It was a vile of sorts that it dropped on the ground before staring at Merlin and crouched itself to prepare an attack.
Taking no chances whatsoever, Merlin made use of his [Delay Teleport]spell to escape and appear back near his tower. But not before casting [Clairvoyance] which was a spell that left behind a sensor of sorts that he could hear or see from individually, never both at the same time though. It was invisible but could be seen by any creature or person with [Truesight] or [See invisibility]. So it wasn't an amazing spell, but it was worth a shot in case he could see or hear something to gather info on this creature.
'Could this be a limited time boss? Or even a raid?' Merlin thought to himself while using his wings to fly back up towards the observatory in the tower. 'I don't have an exact level but it's over one hundred for sure. So I don't know if I could take it by myself. I probably could since it was a single enemy… but whenever do the devs just put in an easy, possible raid, boss?'
Merlin situated himself back in his observatory and opened his friend list to see that most of his friends were offline. The only ones online were Momonga and Touch-Me who seemed to be in a party together. He opened up a chat with the two and typed:
Merlin: You guys able to talk? He got his response a minute or so later.
Touch-Me: I am available yes. It's nice to hear from you again.
Momonga: Haven't heard from you in 2 months. Is everything all right?
Merlin: I've been fine yes. But I may need some help with something.
Touch-Me: If a friend is in need of assistance, I can't turn them down! A thumb up emoji was placed next to it.
Momonga: Don't know how much I could help. But I can try
Merlin: I'm in Álfheim right now and I've found a potential new raid boss
Momonga: Wow really? I've only done beginner and low level raids. But I can try and help.
Touch-Me: This certainly seems interesting… We are currently with a few people, do you mind if they join us?
Merlin: As long as you trust them
Touch-Me: I certainly trust them! Smiley face Where about are you in Álfheim?
Merlin: I'll send you my coordinates. I'm at my home base so please don't leak the location out to people
Touch-Me: No worries my friend! Your base will remain secret!

After around twenty minutes of waiting, Merlin could see four figures approaching in the distance. One of them was the Lich Momonga, the fully armoured hero of justice Touch-Me and two new figures.
The first one looked like the literal definition of a ninja. He wore a black ninja garb that had white pauldrons lined with a gold colour, which had spikes sticking out of them. White greaves lined with the same gold colour, minus the spikes. Twin tailed black cloth that came from both hips and a black scarf of sorts to finish off his ninja look.
Next to the ninja was a figure that was much larger. He seemed to be a Nephilim that had two white/yellow horns on his head. The left horn was larger than the right and was connected to his head that was of the same colour, also had lots of sharp teeth. This one wore a set of dark red samurai armour lined with gold and had plenty of other designs throughout the armour. On his hip was a blade that had a hilt which was extremely similar to his armour. And the sheath was black with white diamond like patterns going down it.
Momonga himself looked different from the last time he saw him. Obviously he remained a Lich, but he was now wearing a deep purple robe and was carrying a new staff that was of a much higher quality than the one Merlin had given him a few months ago. Also every one of his fingers carried a ring now.
Since he was placing his trust in the four of them, he left the tower visible for the four. He gave a small wave to the group from the top of the tower, which Momonga and Touch-Me returned. When they reached the 'base' of the tower, Momonga called out.
"Do we just fly up?"
"No need for that" Merlin spoke as a small platform appeared in front of them "This will take you up so you don't have to fly or climb the tower".
"Good thing for that" samurai joked as he stepped onto the pad.
"This tower does look interesting and I'd like to explore it" the ninja said in response as he and the last two stepped on.
The platform rose itself to the observatory and the group of four hopped into the tower. Merlin was standing right there so he gave a light bow "Thanks for coming. My character name is Merlin" he said while addressing the two newcomers.
"I'm Nishikienrai" the ninja waved casually "Can just call me Nishiki"
"And I'm Warrior Takemikazuchi. Takemikazuchi or Takemi is fine." The samurai voiced somewhat boisterously "I look forward to this boss that you told Touch-Me and Momonga about".
"Definitely" Nishiki replied enthusiastically "I'm always up for a tough boss battle"
"Well then. Let us prepare then"

Definitely a different story for the most part. Probably won't update this as often as my other stories and I'm planning on having a few chapters with multiple time skips up until the 'main story' of Overlord. So let me know what you think and I might make more of this.
