PROLOGUE
A bright hologram screen lit up a dark and mysterious room where two figures watched the scenario playing out in silence. The female human tapped several small squares and waved her hands bringing the unconscious Kyle Bredeson's body into view. Her companion, a female Pokemon stared on in silence as the two spoke in hushed tones.
"It appears Eon wasn't worth the trust we put in him."
"It doesn't mean a thing. Kyle is currently in critical condition for the third time," the human responded. She shifted her weight on the leather chair, as the boy groaned unconsciously. She watched with rapt interest as the anomaly sliced off his limb. They had watched the proceedings numerous times before but now she was searching for the answers to questions they both had. The female uncrossed her legs and recrossed them, as she swiped forward in time to Kyle in the hospital. Leaning forward onto her arm, she let out a sigh.
"This isn't good-"
"It doesn't matter," the woman snapped, her temper flaring at her companion. They both knew what the other was thinking. Waving the screen right, she fast-forwarded again stopping as she came face to face with Mew cuddling the boy. The Legendary had been forbidden from interfering. This was the second time she had ignored that rule and done as she pleased. Gritting her teeth in frustration, she drummed her long nails on the desk next to her.
"Her speaking to him could change the outcome-"
"You know it does. Every little interaction has massive consequences. This isn't a game, and you know it. Already, we've had three divergences in his path.," she said, standing up. A tingling sensation filled her limbs, and she glanced at her compatriot who searched for the source. Her head whipped to the door, as she recognized that they had unwanted company. Standing up in a swift motion, she moved around the desk and tapped a button on the edge of the glass table. On cue, sliding doors hissed open, revealing that the two were no longer alone. A legendary Pokemon glared daggers at its audience as it floated until they were eye to eye.
"What is this about Eon knowing his future?" Mew hissed, furiously.
"I did what I thought was right. You on the other hand had one. SIMPLE. TASK. I told you to observe."
"He's a child. Don't lecture me, like I don't understand what you are doing."
"We all agreed that getting involved was dangerous. How much does he know?" the woman demanded placing fingers to her eyebrows.
"Enough. He knows enough..." the legendary responded, her eyes falling to the floor. "I'm worried. If things continue this way…"
"This is exactly why I warned you to stay away! You had no right to interfere with us. For all we know, this changes everything!" the woman shouted, banging a fist on the glass. The panel cracked, and the pink Psychic-type stared down at the furniture in silence.
The woman scoffed at the legendary before sitting on the edge of her desk, with brow furrowed.
"You...you don't care about him," Mew stated in an awe-struck voice.
"Watch your tone when speaking to my trainer," the female Pokemon warned, a strong gust of power flowing through the air. The woman held a hand up, and the power subsided as suddenly as it had come.
The Legendary stared at her fellow Pokemon who appeared conflicted by the situation.
"The three of us know what's at risk here," the woman replied in a strained voice. "I care a great deal about him. That's the problem. I can't afford to let my emotions get in the way of our goals. If all else fails, we may have to look for alternatives."
"You don't really believe that do you?" her teammate spoke, waving a hand. The metal shutters behind them opened pouring sunlight into the room.
"I don't know," she whispered. "We are running out of time though."
Mew sighed quietly only to detect a sudden surge of murderous intent. Her eyes looked to the woman, widening as she glared at the ground.
"You can't seriously be considering...killing him?"
The woman considered her words before a small smile touched her lips. Stretching her arms high above her, she leaned back over her desk and stood tall. Grabbing a nearby silver bracelet off the table edge, she attached it to her wrist. The action brought her attention to the frame which sat on the desk with a picture of her best friend. She seriously wondered what the Pokemon Champion would do in her position. While killing him might give better results, she hoped it wouldn't come to that. They didn't need another mistake especially when they were so close to prevailing.
"Get in touch with Eon. There's work that needs to be done," the woman said to her teammate. Waving a hand on the hologram, she turned to her Pokemon who nodded an affirmative. The lights flashed out as she moved towards the door, brushing past Mew.
"From this moment on, we are enemies," the Pokemon threatened with a smirk.
"Stay out of our way Mew. You can't help him," the woman stated coldly as she reached the opening to the room. Her heels clicked as she moved swiftly and tapped the led panel to open the doors again.
"You know I'll stop you. No matter the cost," Mew said, before warping away in the blink of an eye.
"You'll try," the woman replied moving a strand of hair out of her face.
With that, she departed with her companion to get the plane ready for departure. Their destination would lead them to trouble's front door. It was time to set the stage for their play and watch the actors dance for them. Mewtwo had merely been the precursor to their debut.
