In the third dimension, in a minute universe, in a tiny spiral galaxy, which contained a tiny solar system, in which a beautiful blue planet orbited a relatively small star, the full moon was rising over a small village that would later be known as Mystic Falls, Virginia. The bright, white sphere in the sky illuminated the shadowy grasslands below.
The occasional hooting of an owl and the howling of a fox can be heard in the distance. The wind was gentle, the air was sweet, and the skies were only mildly cloudy. Two young brothers, one of them aged almost 20, and the other a mere 13, ran through the trees, hiding behind bushes as they scouted the parameters of their village, hoping to see the sight their father had warned them was forbidden.
They were there to see the men of a neighboring tribe turn into wolves under the full moon.
"Klaus!" The younger brother whispered, "I think I heard something! Is it the wolf-men?"
"Quiet Henrik." The older brother named Klaus whispered back, "our mother and father warned us, these people are extremely dangerous once they have transformed. We must be careful!"
In the distance, the cracking of a bone, followed by the screams of pain sounded. "It's them!" The younger Henrik whispered excitedly, "it's the wolf-men! Klaus! Let's get closer."
"Yes." Agreed Klaus, "stay low." Together, the two brothers began tip-toeing towards the source of the sound.
They pushed their way out of the trees, and crawled silently across a field of tall thick grass, being very careful not to draw the slightest attention to themselves.
Suddenly, a beam of light shone down upon them from above, lighting up the spot just meters before them. "Henrik! Get down!" Klaus whispered as he pulled his brother and himself down to the ground, shrouding themselves in the thick grasses.
"What's that?"
"I don't know. Shhh..."
Watching through the cracks in between the blades of grass, the brothers watched as the beam of light which seemed to have no visible source of origin in the sky expanded in diameter. 10 meters. 20 meters. 40 meters. 60 meters. From seemingly nowhere except the sky, a large, bright red, and egg shaped spaceship descended down the beam of light.
The ship had three large, nozzles spewing blue flames spaced out evenly around its wider bottom, slowing its descent to halt as it levitated just 10 meters above the ground. As quickly as the white light appeared, it faded away again, leaving only the light from the moon as a source of luminance.
A hatch below the ship dropped open, and a human shape slowly descended from it, floating gently to the ground despite having nothing to stand on. His movements were slow, calm, and graceful, like a bird of prey. Klaus and Henrik struggled to get a better glance at the figure that now stood before them, dressed in strange attire.
The figure was a man, shrouded in a set of pure white overalls with a hologram name tag pinned in the center of the chest, and a similar, tight-fitting hat to go with it. Although his olive skin, short black hair, and handsome oval face looked no different than that of a human, there was a clear feature of his that distinguished him from humans; his eyes.
Instead of having a white sclera and a pupil, the man's eyes were blank and glowed with a bright, sky-blue light. "Deploy force field projectors!" The man ordered up in the spaceship through the open latch. "100-meter radius."
"Deploying force field projectors. 100-meter radius." Another male voice in the ship replied. "Active….now!" A beam of sky blue light shot out of the top of the rocket, and up several hundred meters until it hit what seemed like an invisible barrier and curved back down, giving it a fountain-like appearance.
The force field quickly closed itself by touching down onto the ground, forming a massive, 200-meter wide dome around their ship, entrapping Klaus and Henrik under with them. Another man leaped out of the ship through the open bottom hatch, landing gracefully on the ground like a prancing cat rather than an elegant bird of prey.
He, like the first man, had glowing sky-blue eyes.
"So, this is the third dimension, eh?" The second man muttered to himself with a smirk, "rather limiting, and plain-looking if you ask me. I still don't see why you insist on beginning our expedition here."
"I have explained this to you and the team many times; it's for safety and terrain advantage. Any higher dimensional beings that attempt to walk this plane of existence will find themselves much more limited than us." The first man answered, "we all know how much the Monitors tend to interfere with our affairs."
"Yeah, but it feels so...weird." The second man complained again, "I don't know how to describe it, but I'm sure you know the feeling."
"Yes I do, Kyle, yes I do." The first man agreed, "but look on the bright side; on this plane of existence, we can alter reality to our wills. We can do whatever we want on this plane of existence, and nothing can stand in our way. That's got to be something."
"Yeah, but I still don't like it."
"I know, Kyle, I know…"
"Well? What are we waiting for? Just a few minutes, and it'll all be over. We'll shock the world! How cool is that? I mean, we'll be famous...our names will be remembered down in history! 'The men who brought knowledge to all of the Higherian kind'."
"Just get the facilities set up, Kyle." The first man sighed, "I'll do a perimeter check. Clear the area. Make room for our facilities."
"Aye aye." The second man named Kyle gave a joking sault, bent his knees slightly, and leaped up through the hatch with a single bound.
The first man turned around, his eyes narrowing as they scan the area surrounding them. Sky blue fifth-dimensional energy charged into his hands, making them glow brightly just like his eyes as he slowly levitated into the air again. A hatch opened on the round top of the spaceship, releasing a dozen helicopter drones.
The first man waved his hands over the thick grass that covered the ground.
Instantly, the grass vaporized into streams of vaporous blue light that dissipated in the night air, leaving behind only soily barren ground inside the dome. Klaus and Henrik, all of a sudden finding themselves completely exposed, huddled together for comfort.
The first man spotted them.
"What do you want?" Klaus demanded, pushing his younger brother back and standing before him protectively. "We don't want any trouble."
"Niklaus-"
"It's going to be alright, Henrik."
The first man's glowing blue eyes scanned them from head to toe, cautiously analyzing the strange creatures which he has never once seen in his life. His face was an expression of cold calculation, and his arms were crossed in front of his chest.
"What do you want?!" Klaus asked, more strongly this time.
The first man slowly levitated down to the ground, unfolding his arms as he approached them.
Still levitating above a foot off the ground, the first man slowly floated before the two frightened boys and extended a long, muscular arm to them. "Klaus?" Henrik held onto his big brother, "is he...is he going to turn into a wolf and eat us?"
"Samuel Salvatore." The first man's expression suddenly broke into a friendly grin as he introduced himself. "I'm the Director and Chairman of the Fifth Dimensional Science and Magic Research Department."
