Chapter 1
Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore portrays himself as somebody that can do no wrong. He saved the wizarding world once before by defeating his long-time friend turned enemy Gellert Grindelwald. He has shown his support for the muggles over the many years after this and as Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, he has done his very best for students of all blood and backgrounds. The majority of Magical Britain looks up to him as a leader and regards him with the utmost respect and reverence. So, it is to say that being spoken to like a child who brought home his OWLs with each grade being that of Troll, was not something that he was expecting this Halloween. He even less expected this to come from one of his greatest allies and friends, Minerva McGonagall. His surprise by this was so great that he was not able to hear what she was even upset about. After he realized that she was now at the front of his desk with her hand on the table, staring pointedly at him, that he was able to clear his mind and start listening to what has been said.
Dumbledore, in desperate need of figuring out of what has been said thus far, dared to ask, "I am truly sorry Minerva, what is it that seems to be the problem?" He quickly realized that this was not a good thing to say to his dear friend at the time. This started her off on another rant directed at none other than himself.
Minerva, now stamping across the room, was unable to hold back even a sliver of her anger towards the headmaster. "HOW COULD YOU BE SO STUPID TO LEAVE THAT POOR BOY WITH THOSE HORRENDOUS PEOPLE. I TOLD YOU ALL THOSE YEARS AGO THAT HE SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN SENT THERE, ESPECIALLY SINCE SO MANY OTHERS WOULD HAVE BEEN GLAD TO TAKE HIM IN."
Dumbledore finally heard what the subject of her irate rant happened to be. This subject being none other than that of young Harry Potter.
"MERLIN, I OFFERED TO TAKE HIM IN MYSELF. I WOULD NEVER HAVE LET YOU PUT HIM WITH THEM IF I KNEW YOU WERE NOT GONNA LOOK AFTER THE BOY WHILE HE STUCK THERE,"
This of course took Dumbledore by surprise, in his many years since he ended the reign of Grindelwald, he has never been doubted in his decisions before and was not going to be proved wrong with the choices he made regarding the Boy-Who-Lived. "I can assure you Minerva, the boy has been in great care." Before he was able to continue his impromptu speech on why he has made the absolute best decision for the lad, an even more irate Minerva McGonagall stormed back to the front of his desk, slamming her white-knuckled fist down, knocking many of his beloved lemon drops onto the floor.
"HOW DARE YOU LIE TO ME ALBUS, I JUST SAW 'GREAT CARE' HE HAS BEEN UNDER MYSELF. SUCH GREAT CARE HE IS IN WHEN HIS PUTRID UNCLE BACK-HANDED HIM TO THE GROUND. GREAT CARE WHEN BEING THROWN INTO THE CUPBOARD, HE HAS BEEN LIVING IN FOR THE PAST 5 YEARS. OH, WHEN THAT FAMILY SHOWS HOW MUCH THEY CARE WHEN THEY STARTED LAUGHING AFTERWARDS. I WILL NO LONGER STAND FOR THIS ALBUS. I WILL NOT LET THE BOY SPEND ANOTHER NIGHT THERE."
Albus Dumbledore was barely able to keep his calm complexion showing after being told just what has happened to the boy. He knew that the boy was going to suffer abuse from his muggle relatives after learning the feelings that Lily Potter's sister had about Lily being a witch. However, the thing that surprised him more was that Minerva was there to witness this happen. Minerva has always taken the Holiday off from her teaching and Deputy responsibilities to grieve for her lost friends that were the Potter's.
"Minerva I would have expected you to be home in order to grieve like you have done so since…"
It was true that Minerva McGonagall has taken the last 5 Halloween's as a personal day away from Hogwarts. It was also true that she told Dumbledore that she needed her time to remember her friends and grieve over the loss of such great friends. While none of what she said was a lie, she made a point to not mention that she has been going to watch over for the poor boy that was orphaned at such a young age. She felt she had to do this for her friends, she cared for the boy like a son she never had, so she needed to see him on this day to do right by dear Lily and James Potter.
"I VERY MUCH GRIEVE FOR LILY AND JAMES AND IT PAINS ME EACH DAY KNOWING THAT THEY'RE GONE, BUT I ALSO GRIEVE FOR A BOY WHO LOST BOTH OF HIS PARENTS BEFORE HE GOT THE CHANCE TO KNOW THEM. I PUT UP WITH YOU SAYING THAT IT WOULD BE THE SAFEST PLACE FOR HIM FOR FAR TOO MANY YEARS, ALBUS. I AM TAKING HIM IN WITH ME TONIGHT. I WILL RELINQUISH MY POSITIONS HERE IF THAT IS WHAT IT TAKES TO RAISE THE BOY PROPERLY."
Dumbledore is still quite taken aback by being spoken to like this. It does not help that his colleague has threatened to leave Hogwarts and her positions here. Albus realizes he must do something in order to keep his best teacher and one of his greatest friends here with him.
"Minerva please sit down so that we can discuss the boy's situation and how we can improve it so that we are both content on his upbringing."
Minutes pass as Minerva stares at her friend with eyes that continue to show pure anger, accompanied by her heavy breathing and occasional pacing around the room made Albus feel like much more time has passed than it really has. Eventually, though, a still very much raging Professor McGonagall took a seat in front of the large desk that was unorganized-much more than it was before she arrived in the office. Another few moments of strained silence passed before Albus was able to discuss the topic at hand.
"I can only imagine the pain the young boy is going through, Minerva, but you must understand that it is the safest place for him to be, with the last remaining blood related to his mother being there, he simply has to stay."
This has been the way that Albus always staved those off who wanted to raise the boy in the world of magic. While it has worked for many years, this time it was blown aside like a Gnome in a great storm.
McGonagall began still in an angered tone, but much calmer than she was before, "Albus I can not believe you on this anymore, I am more afraid of what will happen to the boy inside that house than I am of any of You-Know-Who's remaining followers." Minerva has still not managed to speak the name that the Dark Lord took at the beginning of the war, it brings back too many painful memories even when she says the moniker given to him by the general wizarding public.
"I will be taking the boy tonight Albus and there is nothing you can say that will change my mind."
This was a very different Minerva McGonagall than what the headmaster has known her to be since she began her time teaching here at Hogwarts. Again, he was taken aback by his friend, but he somehow knew that there would be no way to convince his proud colleague of how this is the best option for the boy now. He would try one more tactic that he knew could make Minerva realize that this must be the way it is.
Screwing his face up to take the look of a very stern father explaining to his child why they were not allowed to get a wand and start doing proper magic like he did, Albus said:
"Minerva, he cannot be raised in the wizarding world. He would be mobbed by the public and the press just to finally get the chance to see the boy. In order for him to come into the wizarding world not being big-headed or otherwise put off our world altogether, I insist that he stays within the muggle world until his time comes to join us here at Hogwarts"
He was immediately able to tell that his words had done what he expected them to do. He saw his friend's face slight into what showed she was carefully thinking over what was just said, realizing that she agreed he should be kept out of their world until the right time came and for a third time, Dumbledore was taken aback, and greatly surprised at what his friend said next.
"Then I will raise him in the muggle world."
Minerva said in a confident way that showed that she would not be persuaded by the great Albus Dumbledore again when it came down to the young Harry Potter.
oooooooo
Minerva McGonagall is a very prideful witch. She is a witch who takes no-nonsense and she proved that to herself tonight. She keys her Scottish heritage, especially her muggle father, who just happened to be a muggle who takes no-nonsense. Being the proud witch that she is means, that she would never take back a statement of great seriousness. Being half-blooded, she instantly believed that she could raise young Harry Potter as a muggle. She realized however, that it has been a great many of years since she had been a part of the muggle world and it showed ever so slightly on the stern Professor's face.
"Now Minerva, even if you did happen to leave your place here at Hogwarts, you don't know about the muggle world anymore, you raising the boy would certainly heed the results that we both do not want for him." Albus said as he was just as quick to realize his colleague's face as she was.
"You now must see that I made the only decision I could, there were no other options to be made. "
The man she has followed for over half of her life was really starting the get on The Professor's nerves. Even though she knew that her face betrayed her, she would never back down from a challenge, certainly not when the Potter's only child was being abused by some evil muggles.
"Albus, do not question my decision-making, I am more than capable of keeping my magic away from the boy and that is just what I will have to do."
She wanted to escape the eyes of her once-trusted colleague, one in which she has put all her faith in for the 40 odd years she has been at Hogwarts. Quickly standing up from her chair, she tried to school her demeanor into one of pure and utter confidence. This glossed-over attempt was quick for the headmaster to take notice of.
"I must insist you see reason Minerva; you simply are not capable of…" Albus Dumbledore was really not expecting what he said to cause a reaction like this. The before rage that his friend had been able to get rid of came back in full force.
"I CANNOT BELIEVE YOU ALBUS, YOUR SELFISH MIND THINKS THAT ITS RIGHT TO JUST SIT HERE AND LET THE BOY BE ABUSED FOR ANOTHER 5 YEARS. I CANNOT EVEN BELIEVE THAT I LET YOU CONVINCE ME OF LETTING HIM STAY WITH THEM. THIS MAKES YOU JUST AS BAD AS THEY ARE."
The night certainly brought Albus back to his years when he was not able to get everyone to trust his big plans. Although, what was just said to him, brought him back to the very worst moment of his life. The moment when his brother, Aberforth, spat at him in disgust, after the tragic death of their beloved sister. The feeling in which he felt was pure guilt. The guilt and shame of being wrong and making a horrible decision that could cost him everything. Albus felt small, that of which a first-year would look if they got called up to his very office when they would think that they were in trouble. He also felt angry, so very angry that he be questioned and belittled like this. The combined result of these feelings made Albus do something that he thought he would never have to do again. He was going to let somebody else win.
After the loud silence had gone on long enough, Albus came out and said, "OK."
This was the last response that Minerva expected the headmaster to make, this is evident in her response, "OK, WHAT DO YOU MEAN OK?" Another one of these disturbingly loud silences continued until Albus had to begrudgingly explain himself.
"I am saying that it is alright for the boy to be taken under your care." This was a very dangerous decision that the esteemed headmaster Albus Dumbledore just made. Another reason why he did not want a magical family to take the boy in was to keep his magical guardianship for himself. He is hoping that with his acceptance of his friend's demand, that he will be able to gain the pure and unquestioned trust of one of his closest allies.
"Although I must insist you stay on here at the castle, we could never find another teacher of your caliber anywhere in Britain. In fact, the only one who could have was poor James himself." This was the same tactic that Albus has been using for years, he knew exactly how to compliment people while also playing into their own emotions. This was one tactic that he has kept from when he was aside the powerful Gellert Grindelwald. He knew that his tactic still worked on his friend when her face softened from the scowl that has been present since she arrived in his office.
"Albus… I must thank you for coming to your senses. You will see that this will be great for the boy. He needs the love that Lily and James would have given him."
That remark only angered the headmaster more, but he was able to keep it inward in order to keep his friend at her positions at Hogwarts. The school could not take a hit like this, especially since the war has just ended and the young students have finally started feeling completely safe again.
"Again, at my insistence, you must stay here at Hogwarts." After a short silence that said she agreed to keep her positions, Albus continued, "In order for you to do this, you will have to find a proper babysitter while you are teaching classes. One that is either magical or squib will be required to keep the Statue of Secrecy in place. At such short notice, I'm not sure we would be able to find anyone before lessons resume on Monday."
Albus believed that he might have a chance to calm Minerva down by the end of the weekend so that he could convince her not to take the boy in. However, this was immediately shot down when Minerva responded with, "I have the perfect person."
Albus finally was able to get out of the shocked state he was in when he heard his friend shouting the name of an address in muggle Britain.
oooooooo
Minerva arrived in a small flat in the middle of Brighton. She is familiar with the flat because she comes over every so often for holidays or when she needed someone very close to her. After she lost so many, the person who survived with her was her younger brother.
Stepping out of the FLOO, Minerva calls out for her brother, who she knew would be home, "Malcolm?", she states letting him know of her presence.
After only a few seconds, Malcolm walks into the room to greet his sister. "Hiya' Min", he asks before wrapping her up in a familiar hug.
Stepping back, he then says, "How are you?" This greeting is well known by the two because each of the previous Halloween's has brought Minerva into his home.
The difference between this greeting and the ones prior is Minerva's expression. This would be the first time that her brother did not see the hollow expression his sister usually wore on Halloween night. She instead looked like she did when they were kids and needed help from one of her brothers. This help though meant work. It also meant that there was no other option, it just had to be done. It is not that Malcolm would ever not help his older sister, but his face showed confusion when witnessing her childhood expression.
"Malcolm, I have something that I need you to do for me." Minerva said to nobody's surprise. "It will only be a few hours a day, while I'm finishing with my lessons." This, however, was a surprise to the younger McGonagall.
"Of Course, Min, what is it that you need help with?" Both siblings new he was going to accept, so it was best if Minerva worked through everything quickly to return to one Harry Potter.
"I am going to begin looking after a young boy, who although is magical, has been growing up as a muggle. I need you to watch over him while I finish up my lessons on the weekdays."
This request stilled Malcolm for two reasons, one being how his sister got herself into this situation, and the other being a far more somber reason.
The siblings were in a strained silence, this subject never being brought up by the older sibling before. No, this was a topic that is rare in being brought up at all. This topic is the loss of his own son many years ago.
oooooooo
Malcolm, only a few years younger than Minerva, got married within the same year she did. These were some of the happiest moments of the small McGonagall family. While Minerva and her husband had been too focused on work, the younger sibling was focused on beginning his family. Malcolm and his wife gave birth to their son Joseph, nine months after their wedding. Shortly after, Malcolm returned to work while his wife looked after the baby. Every moment Malcolm spent with his son made him happier than he believed possible. His son was the pride of his life and he would give him anything at the flick of the wand. However, these happy times only lasted a few short years.
The small McGonagall family, which included the siblings' parents, siblings, significant others, and child, were pleasantly waiting for Minerva and Malcolm to finish up from work before starting their dinner. This was a common thing that the elder Richard McGonagall, has kept ever since his children were young. So, when the smell of smoke became noticeable, it was already too late.
A fire started in the cellar below the large farmhouse and very quickly spread. The oil burner that lit and heated the house took aflame. Then in a few seconds, the burner exploded. Upstairs the family was all screaming as the wooden farmhouse began to burn rapidly. The apparition point that the elder Mother set up outside of the farm made it so that they had no way to escape. Everything happened so quickly, that the already small McGonagall family, became smaller.
Arriving first, Minerva immediately saw the flames. She quickly shot out a very powerful aguamenti charm to put out the fire. Once the smoke was spelled away, Minerva gave out. While she happened to still be conscious, she was frozen. It was not until her brother Malcolm began shaking her did, she starts wailing in grief. This was a sign that all of Malcolm's fears were true. All that was left of the small family were the two siblings. They spent hours into the night sobbing over all the pain that they felt.
Neither of the two siblings were able to properly function on their own for a long time. They were both unable to stay in their own houses, many offered to house them while they grieve, but they ended up at Hogwarts at the invitation of one Albus Dumbledore.
Two years of pain and loss went by before Malcolm had enough. Malcolm escaped from the castle which felt like a place more horrible than Azkaban, telling nobody where he was going. Minerva fell into an even deeper depression, she was completely alone, she had nobody left and had all but given up what was left of herself. Seeing this being played out, Dumbledore felt he had to help the poor woman, he gave her something to distract herself, gave her a home, and she slowly became a vital part of Hogwarts hallowed halls.
After Malcolm left Hogwarts, he wandered around Britain with no destination in mind. He moved from city to city for over a year before he stopped in Brighton. He was attracted by the sea there. He was living out of caves and overhangs, just outside the public's eyes. Months passed before he entered the city completely and began blending into the muggle population there. Malcolm did not plan to stop using magic, it just ended up that way. He felt it too much work. He gathered his remaining money to buy the house he currently lived at and settled in as the average muggle. He was content with this.
He went to retrieve his inheritance and has lived off it ever since. He was seldom in his communication with those from the wizarding world. Eventually the only person from his past that he spoke to happened to be his sister.
It was not until Halloween many years later, that he found himself face to face with his sister. Never once seeing each other after the day he left Hogwarts.
oooooooo
Malcolm thought of all the pain from his past over the course of a few minutes, only stopping when Minerva embraced him once again. They did not speak, they felt the pain together, and after a while, Malcolm felt he could continue with the conversation.
Malcolm spoke first saying, "I will not return to that castle Min." Minerva felt a slight annoyance knowing that she already explained herself, but she ignored it for sake of time.
"He will be raised in the muggle world. When I am with him, I will act as if I was a muggle. So, you will not be returning to the castle, and you will not be doing magic." She said showing her obvious annoyance with the lack of lip that was showing.
"Alright. Alright, Min. Just tell me where to go and what to do." Malcolm said trying to get out of his sister's pointed stare.
"Good. I will let you know where tomorrow and all you have to do is watch over the boy."
Malcolm was glad that the heavy conversation was coming to an end, he only needed to know one last thing. "I will need to know his name Min." He said in a tone that showed everything has taken quite the toll on him.
After a short pause, Minerva said as nonchalantly as possible, "His name is Harry. Harry Potter."
oooooooo
Harry Potter is balled up in a fetal position in the cupboard under the stairs. This was where he happened to spend most of his time, although he rather be anywhere else. This was considered his room, which happened to be in his home. He would never say anything different, but he knew that they both were not his. No, they belonged to his giant Uncle Vernon, a name he thought did not quite seem accurate enough. He thought that "Warden Dursley", would fit him much better.
He continued to sob silently in the complete darkness that was the cupboard. He was told that he was not allowed to make a peep and he was to not have his light on, as he was being punished. He was being punished for the horrendous act of completing his homework. Yes, for Harry this was another crime the warden said he committed. Harry was just finishing up on his maths when the warden opened the cupboard.
"What are you doing boy?" He said angrily while ripping his homework out of his hand. He stops in the kitchen to check on something, and when he came back, he had Harry's homework in pieces. The warden marched up, purple-faced to the boy, and began furiously yelling at him.
"WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING BOY? DUDLEY HASN'T EVEN STARTED ON HIS HOMEWORK YET. A FREAK LIKE YOU THINKS YOU ARE BETTER THAN MY DUDLEY. GET OVER HERE BOY." He said while not waiting for Harry to come as he asked. Instead, he grabbed the boy on the neck of his shirt and drug him out.
"YOU ARE A FREAK. HOMEWORK DOESN'T MATTER WHEN THE ONLY PLACE YOU COULD END UP AT IS IN PRISON AND I HOPE YOU DON'T GET THAT LUCKY." Even though he was scared, he imagined his uncle as the warden of "CUPBOARD PRISON." Harry, as he is being held in front of the mammoth-sized warden, had no way to defend himself from his first punishment. The boy was backhanded with enough force to rip the tape off his already broken glasses. Afterwards, Harry knew he was being yelled at, but he did not hear the warden until after he was thrown into the cupboard.
"IF YOU MAKE EVEN A PEEP, IF YOU TURN OFF THE LIGHT, YOU KNOW WHAT'S COMING FOR YOU BOY." He yelled loudly while slamming the cupboard door hard enough that dust fell all over Harry and his bed. Since he was not allowed to make even the slightest peep, the last noise that was made from the cupboard was the turning of the lock that never allowed him to leave.
Harry learned to ignore the sound of the warden and guards, so the sound of loud knocks on the door was the next sound he heard in the cupboard. He moved and put his ear to the cupboard door, listening to who it could be, Harry imagined it was already past dinner so, it was rather late for company. One of the prison guards, who also happened to be called his Aunt Petunia, opened the door, and asked as politely as possible, what exactly the person wanted so late at night.
"Hello, sorry for bothering you so late at night, I am with the Orphaned Child Association, and I was wondering if you would be able to speak about some options for one Harry Potter. He has come to our attention, and we just wanted to speak to the family who took him in. Am I right to believe you are Petunia Dursley, sister of one Lily Potter?" Harry heard the nice lady say rather quickly.
The guard was stilled for a second before she responded, "Yes I'm Petunia. What kind of options could the boy have?" This was said in a less polite tone from when she greeted the visitor.
"Well, things like, financial benefits, or adoption papers…" This was all the lady was able to get out before the warden stomped loudly from the kitchen, and down the hall.
"Yes, we would love to see those adoption papers! We could even fill them out tonight!" The obnoxious man explained to the Orphan worker lady. He could not remember what organization she said.
Trying to hide the scowl that her face was starting to show, she said, "Oh I see, then we can certainly do that now. May I come in?"
The prison staff gladly welcomed in the nice lady into the hall, then swiftly led her to the living room. Before the lady even finished sitting down, the warden asked if there was anything else they needed to do except sign the papers.
"No, nothing else is necessary. I have an already filled-out form that just needs both of your signatures." The prison guard rushed off to grab a pen and was back signing in what felt like no time at all.
The nice lady started again, "Well all seems to be in order, I can take the boy back with us now if you like."
Without even answering, the warden all but skipped out of the room to fetch the boy. At the sound of the locking turning once again, Harry went back into his fetal position. The warden did something the boy has never seen before. The warden was giving him the brightest smile he has ever seen. Harry did not even think smiling was possible for the warden.
"Alright boy, we found you a new home for you, so grab your things and you can be off." After the warden left, Harry gathered all his belongings, which consisted of his backpack and schoolbooks. Harry was smiling gently as he skipped to the living room, before quickly changing his face so that the warden would not see. The older prison guard also showed a great big smile.
The nice lady was able to get Harry out of the house with no protests, and they were soon driving away from CUPBOARD PRISON, where he would never be locked up again.
oooooooo
The drive was not going how Minerva wanted it to go. She had wanted to tell the boy everything already. The truth about his parents so that she would be there to show him his first bit of comfort that he would remember, and that she was sure he had never received. However, the ride was as quiet as a mandrake was loud. So, nothing was said until Minerva pulled into the driveway of her new, very new, muggle house.
"This will be your new home, Harry. I will promise you that it will be far better than that last place." She said this with disgust. Disgust which confused Harry, she did not speak like this at the house, and he was really hoping she would be nice. The woman noticed Harry's concern and quickly reassured him of his original thought.
"Oh, I'm sorry dear, I really did not mean to worry you, I just happen to know exactly what those people did to you, and I wanted to show my anger towards them. Not you Harry." This was great to hear for Harry, however he was not sold to the woman quite yet.
When Harry finally entered the light of the home, he saw the most amazing thing he has ever seen. He saw the most uncluttered house he has ever seen. It was so big and to Harry, really seemed to feel like a home and not the prison he was used to. He slowly walked around in awe, spending an extra moment at the base of the stairs where he saw no cupboard door. This shot Harry's hope much more than anything prior had. When he was led to his room, he again saw just the most amazing thing, definitely more amazing than his last sight. Harry was overwhelmed. The room was massive, with probably the biggest bed that Harry could possibly imagine. There was a desk, a closet, and even a nightstand! Harry was so happy that he would no longer have to place his glasses on the dusty wooden boards in the cupboard. Harry walked up to his nightstand to see a picture of a happy family framed on it. He stared at it, he looked confused on why this random family was on his nightstand.
Walking up behind Harry, not touching him by only the smallest amount, said, "I hope you enjoy your new room and house Harry. I will do my best to make you as happy as can be." She continued after kneeling to Harry's level. "My name is Minerva. Minerva McGonagall, and I am going to be taking care of you from now on."
Harry gave a small smile before his head went down to hide his bashfulness. Harry feeling like he could trust this lady, Minerva, he spoke to her asking the question that is on his mind.
"Umm, Mrs. McGonagall," he paused, "I was wondering who these people were.,." He was not able to say anymore, afraid he has said too much, he again put his head down, this time in worry. The next thing he saw was the picture of the family brought to his eyes, and he followed the picture until it stopped in front of Minerva's chest.
She began to speak while pointing to the red-headed woman, "This Harry, is your mother, Lily." Now pointing at the man with similar hair to Harry. "This Harry, is your father James." Finally moving her finger to the baby that they were holding she said, "And this Harry, is you, on your first birthday."
Harry was stilled, his mind was still registering the new information that was told to him. Eventually, his lip began to whimper, and his eyes started watering, until he began doing something foreign to him. Harry lunged towards the picture, giving it and Mrs. McGonagall his first hug. Minerva also started tearing up as she began to reciprocate the hug. The eventful day ended with both doing new things. Harry bawling his eyes out, his cries the loudest his voice has ever been, and a crying Minerva, who comforted her friends' son for the first time since they were there. This was a very special day for the both of them.
