Chapter 61: The End of Summer

As summer began to draw to a close, Harry found himself in Diagon Alley to collect the supplies for his last year at Hogwarts. It wasn't that everything in magical Britain was bad, but there was too much corruption, Headmaster Dumbledore was actively working to harm the world, harm his family. The Minister of Magic seemed weak willed and easily bribed. The laws were archaic and supremely prejudiced against everyone but pureblooded wizards. The society was in general at least a century behind the rest of the world, even other wizarding societies. Not to mention that their main prison was guarded by literal demons. Of course, all of that would pale in comparison to what would happen if the truth about his nature came out at the wrong time… assuming there was a right time. On the other hand, the headlines of the Daily Prophet showed that at least some things were beginning to improve.

Dumbledore's Star on the Fall!

In a stunning act, Minister Cornelius Fudge has rallied the Wizengamot to remove Albus Dumbledore as Chief Warlock. As well, the International Conferderation of Wizards has voted to replace Dumbledore as Supreme Mugwump. This decision came after the disastrous events of the Triwizard Tournament, which involved the kidnapping for multiple students, the destruction of multiple dragon eggs, and the capture of two escaped Death Eaters.

As Harry read the article, he had the feeling that while it was good that Dumbledore was on the decline, there would still be problems at school. These feelings got worse when he saw the book assigned for Defense Against the Dark Arts. It was a useless waste of paper, only good for kindling. This didn't bode well for the quality of the professor. Harry finished up his shopping, and headed back to his family manor. He packed his trunk for the next term, and took the opportunity to rest after a busy day.

The next day, he paid a visit to the Welsh Dragon Preserve, and was able to go see Norberta again. As he approached with Drake, Norberta came out to see them, albeit much more calmly than in the past.

"Big Brother, It's good to see you again," said Norberta, "Our caretakers here have kept us up to date with what's been going on. I heard about how you got roped into the wizard's stupid tournament. I also heard how you parleyed with the nesting mothers they brought for their entertainment".

"Norberta, are you feeling alright?" asked Harry, "you seem different from when we last talked".

"I've been doing some thinking," said Norberta, "last year, I was sure I wanted to be like you, to become like you to fight at your side. But She made me reconsider".

"Who exactly did this?" asked Harry.

"The Old Moth, the ancient guardian," said Norberta, "I now wish to know more. Tell what it's like to live as you do".

'Ah, Mothra of course she'd be keeping an eye on things,' thought Harry.

"While it might sound exciting," explained Harry, "it's really a heavy responsibility. Any time there is a significant threat to the safety of Earth and those who dwell on it, we are the ones whose job it is to stop it. We, the kaiju of Earth exist to uphold the Balance, not only to shield the world from threats from outside, but from within as well. It was the actions of humanity and destruction wrought upon the Earth that awakened the Kaiju from their long slumber. Now, we will remain, protecting the Earth until we are no longer needed, however long it takes".

By the end of his story, it seemed Norberta understood. She looked him in the eye, and made her decision, hoping her brother would take it well.

"I think… I don't want to become like you," said Norberta, "I want to follow a different path, learn more about what my magic can do".

"I think that's a good choice," said Harry, "I can't be everywhere at once, and perhaps you can help teach the other dragons of the world to use their magic too".

Norberta's eyes filled with a new light as she considered this possibility. Being able to teach others to use this power she could use? Help make others more special? Not only would this make her important among all the dragons of the world, but she'd be helping her big brother in her own way!

"I'll do it!" said Norberta, "I'll share my knowledge with everyone! And one day, when I have hatchlings of my own, I'll teach them too!"

"When the time come for that, make sure to introduce me to any mate you might want," said Harry, "I can't have you dating anyone who might try to hurt you. After all, that's what big brothers are for, right?"

Norberta just rolled her eyes, and they got to talking about the dragons Harry had met since they last talked. He told her about the four nesting mothers as well as meeting Tumydys. Eventually though, it was time for Harry to leave. Harry departed the Preserve, having much on his mind.

Voldemort had called upon his Death Eaters for information, and learned about Dumbledore's downfall. It was strange, his mind felt clearer than it had in years. As he thought about it, the so called 'Leader of the Light' was no better than him. At least he was honest about his goals.

In any case, he'd done a ritual to check on the state of his remaining Horcruxes. The Diadem, the Goblet, and of course Nagini were all intact. There was definitely something up though. Nagini hadn't been eating enough, and it was beginning to show, her spine protruding slightly and her scales a bit misshaped and thin. At the same time, Voldemort had been feeling a bit ill, his skin becoming even paler than it had been, and he was beginning to look gaunt amd losing what little hair he had.. A simple glamour covered it up, but it was clear something was wrong. He recalled some of the information he'd seen in the past about radiation sickness, and realized it fit. Something had affected them, and was slowly destroying them from within… and he had no idea what to do about it.

A/N: And there we go! Next time, it's time for 5th year, and you know what that means: it's time for Umbrage to show her toadish, pink sweater wearing face. See you then.
