A Second Chance Under a Blood Moon

Intro:

A feather. The slightest fall of a feather is all that could have been heard from the silence that surrounded the Cullens who had recently uprooted their life to move away from Forks. Away from the comfort and security that the small town provided. Away from Bella. There had not been a complete agreement between the coven members to make this decision, but due to relentless pressing from Edward, the coven had caved.

Carlisle and Esme watched Alice, their eyes full of concern who sat on the couch of their home, her face buried in her hands. Out of the family, this change seemed to be affecting Alice more than anyone. Jasper knowingly rested a gentle hand on her shoulder, gently caressing small circles against her soft skin. He knew all too well what battle she was fighting inside, one that she could not share with the rest of the coven. One she had been fighting for her entire being. One that had recently become so much more so once Bella had entered their life. One that only he knew about.

" Alice, dear, it's going to be okay. This is for the best" Esme tried to soothe, crouching down in front of Alice and placing her hands on Alice's knee.

"Best for who exactly?" Alice snapped, her head shooting up from her hands.

"You know that what she wanted was unhealthy. She was acting irrationally. This space from Edward will be very helpful in helping her to realize the significance of living a healthy, normal, mortal life." Rosalie stated briskly as she walked into the room, closely followed by Emmett.

"You know, I'm tired of everyone thinking you can speak for Bella, like she doesn't have her own thoughts, her own feelings! Perhaps she acted irrationally to all of you, but she acted very much like any other human would faced with the fear of losing what she loved. Maybe all of you have been vampires for too long to understand her human feelings!" Alice snapped, suddenly standing up, her hand shakily running through her short feathered hair.

"Alice, please. Calm down. Let's try to discuss this rationally" Carlisle murmured, his gentle amber eyes locked into his adoptive daughter's, which were slowly changing to a much darker shade of brown. Her outburst was not like her, and he was growing concerned. How could he not have sensed that this would be such an issue?

"What is there to discuss? You all welcomed her into this house. Edward brought her to us, and we invited her in. We welcomed her like family. Now look at us. We left her. We abandoned her. There was nothing rational about our actions." Alice snapped back, her fists tightly clenched. Her composure was slipping fast.

Jasper took note of this and quickly did his best to use his gift to calm Alice down. Alice felt a sudden wave of calming effect, and smiled up to her best friend.

" Alice is right. We should have considered all possibilities before accepting her into our world. While I am not thrilled at the thought she would want to throw away her mortality so willingly, we need to go back. She is left vulnerable. Laurent or even Victoria could still decide to go after her. The Volturi could even find out about her knowledge, and come after her to rid a potential threat. She is our responsibility. She is our family. Regardless if she is a human or not." Jasper stated boldly, gaining a thankful smile from Alice. She could always count on Jasper to have her back.

"We are not going back. We made a mistake. Bella will learn to move on and carry on without us. She's just one human. The Volturi will not act, and if Laurent or Victoria come back, I'm sure the shifters on the Tribal lands will address. Bella is close with one of them. Jacob will ensure her safety, I am sure." Edward responded to Jasper as he walked into the room and smugly crossed his arms.

"Bella is much more than just one human. How can you even say that? I thought you loved her!" Alice shouted, growing angrier by the moment, despite Jasper's efforts.

" I did. I care for her greatly. We have to do this, for her. We can't be selfish. This is not a life she should want. This was the only way to make her see that" Edward responded rather hotly. He did not appreciate Alice's tone.

"How can you possibly know what is best, and what she feels? You can't even read her mind! It's like you don't even know her at all. Abandoning her was wrong, Edward! If you didn't want to turn her, you shouldn't have given up on being with her. Would it have been easy? Of course not. Nothing worth having is. And if you didn't want to be with her, that's your call, but you shouldn't have enough power to make that decision for all of us" Alice paused in a failed attempt to try and collect herself, " She deserves more from you. More from all of us. And if none of you can see that, then this isn't the coven that I thought it was, and perhaps one that I do not want to belong to anymore! " Alice finished, earning a startled gasp from Esme, and concerning glances from the rest of her family.

" Fine. You think you know so much about Bella? Look into her future now that I have removed us from her. Tell me what you see. Prove me wrong!" Edward roared back, only held back by Carlisle, who had a strong grip on his bicep.

Alice paused for only a moment. She knew that Bella didn't like her peering into her future. She had always made mentions how she like it was an invasion of her privacy. Alice quickly thought this through, and came to the conclusion that she had to as it might prove to be beneficial for Bella in the long run. Alice only nodded and began to look into Bella's future.

What she saw no one could have ever predicted. Alice came back to the present from her vision and gasped as she fell down to her knees, trembling. Jasper and Esme quickly dropped down to their knees as well, asking Alice if she was okay. Alice could no longer block out her thoughts from Edward.
Edward took a couple of shaky steps back, his eyes wide and locked onto Alice.

" You have got to be kidding me" Edward said in a shaky breath, as Emmett and Carlisle quickly moved to create a barrier between Alice and Edward.

" Alice, what did you see?" Rosalie asked, her voice full of concern.

Alice couldn't move. Alice couldn't speak. A vision so clear. A vision that was left with absolutely no room for interpretation. A vision that was set in stone and was not relative. A vision that had ended simply too soon. Alice would not let this one end, no matter the cost.

After a few seconds, Alice looked up to her family nervously nibbling on her lip.

" You were right about one thing, Edward. Your actions did have an impact. Everything has changed. I'm not going to let this vision become nothing more than just a possibility" Alice murmured, and broke away from both Jasper and Esme, quickly turning her back to Edward. She could not look into his eyes. Not yet. She smiled lightly as she felt Jasper playfully mess with her hair and said one single word, barely audible to hear even for a vampire. " Go."

"Alice, wait." Carlisle shouted, just a moment too late. Alice had jumped from the window and landed neatly onto the soft mossy ground below. She looked up at the house, to her coven. She knew that one day in the near future, they would all understand. She had seen it. She had seen her back with her coven, along with the reason for her existence, the reason why everything had happened the way it had, standing by her side. She knew there was going to be difficulty. She knew it would not be easy. But she knew there had to find the reason why the vision had ended so abruptly. She had to find out what this vision had meant for her. It was time. She was not sure how much Edward had been able to see as her composure had slipped, but there was no time to ponder such thoughts, or worry about explanations.

" Forgive me and please let it not be too late" Alice murmured, as she took off into the night, heading back straight back to Forks, ready to claim her one and only second chance. " Bella, I am coming. Please, just hold on"

Today should have been like any other day. It was yesterday that should have been eventful. Yesterday had been her Birthday. Her 18th to be exact. While it was true that she hated her Birthday, she had hoped that this one would be different as it was the first, she was spending with her new family, the Cullens. Of course, like everything else in her life, it had gone downhill due to her own screw-ups. She had gotten a papercut. A stupid, small papercut. Everything went spiraling downhill faster than the single blood droplet had fallen from her finger. Bella had suffered multiple injuries after Edward had unintentionally shoved her out of the way from Jasper, who was still too new to the vegetarian life style to control himself. Bella of course did not blame Jasper for his reaction, or Edward's for that matter. What she was having a great deal of a time accepting the news that Edward had so coldly and directly shot at her. Their conversation still lingered in the air, even though he had vanished within a blink of an eye.

" I'm just sorry, I let this go on for so long"

" Please don't"

"Goodbye"

And just like that, her family, her hopes and dreams, her new reality had vanished.

Bella stood in the forest, not sure what to do. Emotions were racing through her; she wasn't able put her finger down on one. Bella could not long stand still, she had to do something. She had to move. As if her feet were no longer her own, they began to move and she walked deeper and deeper into the forest. Thoughts of not just Edward, but of Esme and Carlisle, the parents she no longer could come to and be accepted with open and loving arms. Of Rosalie and of Emmett, and the knucklehead jokes that would come from Emmett and the coolness but promising acceptance one day of Rosalie. Of Jasper and the way she instantly felt calm in his presence no matter how bad her nightmares had been the previous night or the issues she faced in her human life.
Bella suddenly stopped. Alice. The person who was always there. The person who never judged her, the person who was there within moments of Bella asking, no matter the situation. The person who understood what was said but also what was not. The person who Bella could spill out the mess in her head, and could put together the pieces. Her best friend.

Why is the thought of her absence hitting me harder than the thought of Edward? Bella thought to herself, quickly shaking her head to clear her thoughts. Of course her thoughts were a mess. Why wouldn't they be? Everything in her life always was. Just this time, the people who always helped to sort it out again, were no longer there. And it was her fault. Bella, for the first time allowed a single tear to fall. Once that happened, the flood gates opened and she could not stop. The tears flowed freely down her face and onto the mossy forest ground.

Bella ran blindly, tears running down her face until she exited the forest. Her sadness had diminished, replaced by guilt and anger. How could they have pretended to care? How could they have led her on like that? It was bad enough that they allowed her into their secret life, but then shut her out like a discarded toy? Was that she ever was to them?

Bella continued mulling over these thoughts as she opened the door, startled to see Charlie turn the corner quickly, looking rather upset.

" Bella, do you have any idea how worried I have been? I had no idea where you were." Charlie scolded, concern shinning deep into his eyes.

" I'm sorry. I should have texted or something." Bella murmured.

"What the hell happened, Bells?" Charlie asked, his eyebrows furrowing together.

" Edward dumped me. Actually, the whole family did. They left. Edward came by long enough to break it to me and then left with his family" Bella explained. While she was not quite ready to have this discussion, she felt the sooner it happened, the better. No point in waiting for the inevitable.

"Oh, Bells. I'm sorry, alright? I know its tough right now but it will get better in time. You deserve better than Edward. A whole hell of a lot better" Charlie sighed, his hand gently rubbing Bella's arm.

"Yeah, I'll be fine. I just needed to walk around. Clear my head. You know?" Bella murmured, "but for now I think I am going to shower and lay down. Too much emotional crap got dumped on me for now"

Charlie didn't say anything but simply grunted and nodded. That was the other good thing about Charlie besides the fact that he doesn't hover, he also doesn't need to fill the air with unnecessary words.

Bella walked up the stairs to her bedroom, gently closing the door behind her. She picked up an old cardboard moving box she had used to move from Arizona, and began to fill it with everything and everything she had ever received from the Cullens. Anything that reminded her of them. She needed it all gone. She did not want any reminders of what could have been. She just couldn't bear it. As Bella filled the box, she began to get angrier and angrier, to the point where she was now throwing items into the box with as much force as she could muster. She took the CD that had been from Edward of him playing the piano and snapped it in half before tossing the pieces into the box. The last thing that was left was a simple bracelet, which Bella was currently wearing. Bella hesitated as she ran her fingers across the cool silver metal. It was a gift from Alice, a gift given to her a few months ago. Inside was engraved with a simple infinity symbol. Alice had made mention that she and Bella were best friends and going to be remain friends for the rest of eternity, and never wanted Bella to question that. Bella sighed, unable to part with the bracelet. Bella walked to her bedroom window, and opened it. She grabbed the box of the miscellaneous items, and dropped them to the ground, near the trash cans. Bella sighed, and turned away from the window. She wasn't sure why, but she felt like it needed to be left open.

Bella took off her clothes, and changed into her normal navy blue boxer shorts and long sleeve gray top she wore for pajamas and crawled into bed. She continued to play with her bracelet, thoughts of everything that had happened running through her mind. Before long, Bella's heavy eyes closed as the weight from the day finally caught up. Tears flooded down Bella's face, staining her pillow. Bella cried silently as her grief and pain took over, until she fell into a deep sleep, so deep that she did not notice the pair of honey brown eyes watching her sleep from her open windowsill. Little did Bella know that soon, everything she knew, everything she had thought she wanted, was all going to change.
