Chapter 32

Fate if nothing more was indeed a cruel and convoluted mistress. As much as one could desire to understand the intricate delicate strings of its design, there was always room for error to be made during interpretation. As significant as fate is, its almost laughable how fragile and unfixed these series of events could be. One small change, one moment of happenstance was all it would take for the articulate design to completely be redone. As Bella stood in a state of complete shock, her ocher eyes unable to move from crimson, realized just how true that sentiment was.

" I know you have questions and I will be more than happy to answer them but first we need to deal with the situation at hand, especially before he is able to drive any further wedges between you and Alice." Edward murmured with his custom half smirk and Bella could only nod as she stepped further back from him and closer to the family.

"What did you mean when you said I was wrong, Edward?" Alice asked out, unable to fight off her curiosity.

"Your thoughts were too loud for me to ignore. You think that Bella would be happier and better off without you, and that all you can offer her is pain and discord. But that is simply not the truth. I know you have no reason to do so, but you need to trust what I say. There is not a bond in the world that matches the connection that is shared between the two of you and a bond like that deserves to be protected no matter what." Edward sighed as he looked over to Laurent who let out a warning hiss.

"This fight does not concern you boy." Laurent sneered and much to the surprise of those around, Edward simply curtly nodded in acknowledgement.

"You are correct. This is a fight between Alice and you. She needs to do this for herself." Edward confirmed and moved to the side, allowing for a safe net of distance to remain between himself and his previous coven.

Alice shook her head and turned her attention back to Laurent, her focus back to the battle. The distraction of Edward had provided just enough of a break for the control and doubts that Laurent had been plaguing her mind with to clear out. She locked eyes with Laurent and simply grinned as her mind was flooded with his predetermined movements. He would not stand a chance against her.

Laurent seemed to sense the danger that he was in and quickly tried to turn the tables once more.

"Do not let him get into your head. He is part of the Volturi, a dangerous group to all that live in our world. He will do and say anything to remove anyone who poses a threat to the natural order they have created for us all to follow. Do not be fooled. If you end me, nothing will stand in the way of them coming after you beloved hybrid next. I was naïve to think that the shifter could be of benefit to me. I realize that I should have paired with you to achieve the goal that we both want. A world where there is no threat of the Volturi. It's not too late, we can join forces and take them down. What do you say?" Laurent asked with a light smile.

Alice looked over at him and contemplated his only slightly tempting offer for a moment before she too smiled and walked over, stopping only a foot or so away from the rogue vampire. The family looked at her curiously, and Bella felt the color drain from her face. Alice wouldn't accept. Surely, she had more common sense than that.

"You are right, Laurent. The threat of the Volturi still exists and they do pose a significant risk to both Bella and my family. It would be wise to have as many people on our side as possible to ensure that the threat was no more." Alice nodded, earning gasps from the family. Bella felt her eyes begin to swim with moisture, and watched helplessly as her imprint reached a hand out, to shake and seal the deal with the scoundrel vampire.

Laurent, while shocked that his tactic had worked, simply smiled triumphantly and extended his own. Alice blinked as their skin came in contact with one another. She gripped his hand tightly and Laurent frowned as he tried to pull his hand back with no avail. His crimson eyes shot from their hands to her eyes, realizing all too late the fatal error he had made when reading Alice. He had underestimated the pixie like vampire and the bond that she had forged with Bella.

"Unfortunately, your inability to form bonds or hold any true sense of loyalty as you've shown in this moment makes you nothing more than a liability and threat to us as well. I at least know where the Volturi stand and what to expect. I cannot say the same for you. That being said, you'll have to accept this as my formal refusal of your offer." Alice replied with a frosty tone as her arm pulled Laurent close to her.

Without giving a moment more of hesitation, Alice's eyes darkened to the most deep and darkest level of black they had ever reached. He would pay for playing the game he had tried to play, and for even thinking about creating a barrier between her and her mate. Her blood red lips lifted over her shimmering pearly teeth, glistening with her excess and pooling venom. She moved her head forward and sunk her fangs deep into Laurent's neck, effectively slicing through the porcelain and olive skin. Laurent's scream filled the air before Alice growled and tore his head from his body.

She watched as his corpse fell to the ground and fell with it, her teeth shredding every piece of him she could reach with her teeth and nails as she was engulfed in a frenzy of sorts. She needed him gone, all of him. She wanted his memory, his words to be no more. She let out a scream and a sob at the same time, as she settled onto her knees, comforted only in knowing that she had effectively avenged her best friend and rocked on her heels, desperately trying to get a hold on herself and her emotions. She had not allowed herself to ever let go to this extreme, and was finding it hard to reel back in the beast.

After a few moments, Alice finally took in a deep breath and rose from the ground, covered in snow and mud before reaching into her pocket and pulling out Jasper's trusty zippo lighter. Her cool thumb brushed against the flint wheel and the spark ignited. Alice watched the flame dance for a few moments before allowing it to fall onto the shredded remains of the nomadic vampire at her feet. She watched the flames dance merrily until they died to nothing more than ash.

With a sigh, she finally turned around to face the family and most importantly to that of Bella who was looking at her with a concerned expression. Alice slowly opened her arms and anxiously watched Bella, fearful of what her reaction would be, after all, not only had she just caused her mate to be in pain but she had also lost control and had torn a vampire into nothing but shreds. Bella simply smiled and moved out of Esme and Carmen's loving embrace and ran into the waiting arms of her love, instantly molding their bodies together, breathing in each other's comforting scents. The family let out a relieved sigh at the sight before turning their attention to Edward who patiently waited for the two to pull apart slightly and looked at him with expectant eyes. It was time for some answers.

"Edward. What are you doing here?" Bella finally asked as she shook her head in confusion, unable to believe her own two eyes.

"The Volturi received wind of the newborn army. Concerned about the safety of the Olympic Coven, Aro made the decision that we were to come and assist as need be. Although, given the state of things, clearly our intervention was not needed." Edward murmured back as he moved slowly closer to Bella, motioning to the carnage and piles of ashes surrounding the now destroyed village.

"We were able to hold them back. Finding out about the newborns was a shock in itself. None of us were expecting that. Alice couldn't see any visions because it was Jake who making the decisions while Laurent simply created newborn after newborn until he believed they had reached sufficient numbers." Bella carefully explained, her wary eyes watching his movements slowly, ready to attack if need be.

"Such a shame. None of this was necessary. Despite my rather strong dislike for the shifters, no one deserves to suffer this type of fate. More so, these people should never have been forced into this existence, especially without proper guidance. This truly is a mess." Edward sighed as he ran a hand through his hair, looking over at the newborns who were looking at him with concern and a slight amount of fear.

"Yes, well. As you can see, we handled it. There is nothing for the Volturi to interfere in with now. Feel free to make your exit at any time. Alice and Bella have gone through enough, you don't need to add to it." Emmett growled out as he looked over the person he had once called brother with nothing but pure disdain.

"I am not here to fight, Emmett. I'm here to provide explanations. I am hopeful that we can get through this all before the others arrive." Edward replied back unfazed as his eyes shot to Alice who was visibly trembling, clearly overcome with her emotions from slaying Laurent and now facing the last person she had ever expected to see again, " Alice, please. I mean what I say. I understand now. Bella was never truly mine. She has always been and apparently even now more so since she is immortal will be forever yours."

"What do you mean?" Alice finally asked, her voice still trembling even though Bella had moved to stand closer to her and placed a gentle hand to the small of her back while her fingertips traced out random shapes and designs in an attempt to reassure and comfort her troubled love.

"During my time with the Volturi, I was enlightened regarding the bonds I thought I had with Bella. I couldn't understand how I could lose my mate. It had been to my understanding that regardless of the turmoil and strife that could present itself in the bond, that it could never truly be severed and yet, that is exactly what had occurred that day all those months ago after I left the coven. Unable to let it go, I asked for insight from the Kings, to which they agreed. Aro read through my thoughts and it was during this rather in depth study that we were able to come to the conclusion that you were never truly my mate but rather my La tua Cantante. Coupled between that and the fact that your mental shield made it impossible for me to read your mind, I was too transfixed and immersed in the mystery of you to be able to see all the signs." Edward explained as Bella furrowed her eyebrows in thought.

"What is a La tua cantante?" Bella inquired with a tilt of her head.

"The term translates to blood singer. You see, infrequently as it may be, a specific human will smell nearly irresistible to a specific vampire. When this occurs, it is rather impossible for a vampire not to drain their singer. The finding of a singer is an individual phenomenon, something that should be cherished above all else." Edward explained purely for Bella's benefit who looked at Edward with widening eyes. She never realized just how much danger she had been in when she was with him. She had always downplayed his warnings but now she understood why he had left after her birthday party. If this was true, then he clearly had almost lost control of himself when she had gotten that negligible papercut and was going to throw away all that he had lived for under Carlisle's instruction. That was the reason why he had left, why they all had left. His control was stronger than the desire for her blood but it did not come without a cost.

"If that is all Bella was to you, how did you manage the night with James? You sucked venom out but her blood was mixed in it as well. You shouldn't have been able to stop yourself." Alice snapped back, her untrusting eyes squinting slightly as she wrapped a protective arm around Bella, realizing just as Bella was just how much danger she had truly been in. Alice cursed herself internally, mentally perplexed as to the reason why she had not been able to see this coming as well.

"I honestly don't know. It is my guess that I was too infuriated that her blood had been tainted by his venom to really think too much on your taste. What was of more significance, even if had been subconscious, was that it become untainted. However, the night of your birthday I found myself barely able to keep myself from draining you. If Jasper had not moved to attack and I had not become territorial over your blood, I likely would have moved myself to do the damned task." Edward explained, unknowingly confirming Bella's previous suspicions.

"What did you mean when you said that Alice was wrong?" Bella asked as she looked between Edward and Alice.

"Alice was concerned that she had misinterpreted her vision she received right after we left Forks. The first time either her or I saw a future in which you and her were an item. It surprised both of us, I think. It is not uncommon for Alice to get carried away at times when experiencing a vision but that was not the case this time. You see, she was worried that all she has been doing is hurting you, Bella. She loves you, more than you can even fathom and I know it is mutual for you as well to her. I was merely reaffirming her initial intuitions." Edward said softly as Alice looked away from Bella with a rather sheepish expression on her face.

"It's okay. I know I hurt you and made you feel distrust in me by not telling you about Edward's note. Regardless if that was my intention or not, I should have known better. I have been in your spot before, more than once. I cannot fault you. If anything, all it does is show that in a sense, you are more worried about me than you are yourself. It's something that we apparently still need to work on. I know you meant well, but I have just about had it with you and your family's misguided attempts at protecting me. I went into this knowing it would not be easy but nothing worth having is. I love you, Alice. We have gotten through so much together, I know we will continue to do so." Bella replied softly, earning a thankful smile from Alice before she turned her gaze back to Edward.

"I don't understand though, what changed? You left. You joined the Volturi for god's sake. You have done nothing but try and tear this family apart. Why should we trust a single word you are saying? For all we know this is part of the Volturi's plan and he's stalling us. If she is your singer, how are you so in control of yourself?" Rosalie snapped out.

"Chelsea verified my bonds after I discovered more about my bond with Bella by Aro and Marcus. I wasn't sure just how truthful they were being. However, standing here, I find that while she is beautiful, I no longer feel the pull to her. I believe that this is likely because her blood is partial shifter, and the other is filled with Alice's venom. As follow up on your second question, I joined the Volturi for reasons, reasons that you will soon see. Initially, my justification for joining were simply to become stronger. I thought that if I did that, I could possibly win Bella back but as I learned more about her, myself, and the bonds that connect us all, I realized that there was a much larger picture to focus on than just me and I needed to become stronger and my gift needed to be enhanced to protect those I cared about. The only way I could do that was by drinking human blood. I could not do that while with the family. What's more is I needed guidance and training, and only a fool would turn down an opportunity to learn from the Volturi. " Edward paused as he seemed to be in thought, " Bella, what note are you referring to?"

"There was a note I found in my old copy of Wuthering Heights not that long ago. The note was in the book in your old room." Bella shrugged as she walked away from Alice to where Laurent had been standing. The note had fallen into the snow and the ink was smudged due to the water damage but she was able to still make it out. She bit down on her bottom lip and moved slowly towards Edward, until she stood just inches away from him. Slowly she extended her hand and passed him the note. His nimble fingers unfolded the fragile and worn edges of the paper before his eyes scanned down across it.

"I understand why you would believe that this note was from me but I swear, I did not write this. Besides, how on earth would I have been able to get inside the house without someone sensing my presence? Someone else set this up." Edward growled as he crumpled the paper into his fist before throwing it onto the ground below.

The family was silent for a few moments as their mind began to reason with what he had said. They were all vampires or at least partial vampires. There would have been no way for him to have come within fifty yards of the property without one of them being able to sense him. If nothing else, Alice would have received a vision once he made the determination that he was going to stop by the house. No matter how it was sliced and diced, they all began to realize that something was not quite adding up.

" I suppose what you say makes sense but then I am curious as to who would have put the note in the book and the reasons for it." Eleazar thought out loud as he gave Carlisle a contemplative stare.

"Perhaps it was Jake, before Bella was turned. He was at the house a lot and we would not have suspected anything if we had sensed him. That is the only logical outcome that I can come up with." Esme replied as she looked over at her family who all nodded in confirmation and agreement.

The family was silent for a few moments in thought before Alice's eyes glazed over momentarily and she gasped. The family turned to her, just as Edward gave out his own warning growl and looked over into the snowy hill where the guard for the Volturi stood alongside Aro, Caius, and Marcus.

Aro's eyes instantly locked onto Bella's, who crouched into a purely defensive stance in front of her family as her lips moved over her teeth. She felt her eyes shift as the almost cool silver flooded throughout her irises. Her nails grew once more along with her teeth. Edward watched with widening eyes but recovered quickly as a slight smirk etched across his lips.

Bella growled out as she looked over the Volturi members with concern. She felt Alice walk next to her and interlock their fingers. She looked behind her to see her family and the extended ones alike crouched down and similar stances, their gaze locked onto that of Aro and the rest of the guard.

Aro looked upon Bella with widening but rather curious eyes. He moved gracefully even for a vampire and advanced closer to the family, outwardly unfazed by the warning growls surrounding him.

"Why, hello there. You must be the infamous Isabella Swan." Aro said practically in an excited squeal as his eyes danced over with curiosity.

"Guilty as charged." Bella replied simply, her tone laced with apprehension.

"Oh, come now. There is no need for that tone. I'm merely fascinated by you, my dear. It is not every day that you run into a being of your uniqueness; a being both half vampire, half shifter and in all likeliness, stronger than both." Aro said dismissively with a wave of his hand.

"You'll have to excuse me but I simply don't believe you. Only a fool would meet the leader of such a powerful and unmerciful coven such as your own and not be on edge." Bella retorted with a slight eyeroll causing Edward to bite back a chuckle.

"You would do well to remember to bite your tongue, boy." Caius hissed out as his crimson eyes shot to Edward who matched his gaze unwaveringly.

"It should go without saying that a being as powerful as you simply cannot be allowed to live amongst humans. I offer you a place with my guard. If you should accept, we will train you and provide a sense of refined purpose for your life. You should not have to go through the mundane existence of going to school over and over again, drinking from animals and trying to coexist with humans. You were clearly made for more than what the Cullens can offer you. I ask you, join my ranks. It would be a shame for your potential to go to waste." Aro grinned and Bella sighed as she heard the hiss come from Alice, who gripped her arm so tightly that she was sure bruises were already starting to form.

"You are correct, Aro. I was made for more than this" Bella paused as she took in a deep and steadying breath, " But I was also made to be more than a slave to you and to carry out your sick and sadistic ideals. I simply cannot accept your offer. You already were foretold of the reason for my existence, thousands of years ago. Do not try and feign ignorance. To do so is an insult of my intelligence."

Aro's eyes instantly hardened and his previous expression turned into that of pure hatred.

"Edward, based on her refusal, you know what must be done." Aro spoke rather curtly, his eyes meeting Bella's own challenge.

Edward did not respond but simply undid his cloak and allowed it to fall off of him, leaving him in a pair of dark jeans and a button-down wine red collared long sleeve shirt. He neatly unbuttoned the buttons at the cuffs and rolled up his sleeves up his forearms. Edward moved slowly but rather than moving to attack, he held out an open hand to Bella who looked at him with inquisitiveness. Slowly she pulled away from Alice and moved a few steps forward until they were facing each other. She placed her hand gently in his own, feeling a sense of comfort and protection that she had not experienced from him before. This action did not go unnoticed from the Volturi, and it earned a hiss from Aro.

"I told you before and I'll say it again. A bond like you have with Alice only comes once in an existence. It is sacred, and should be protected at all cost. I may have been too late to save Jasper, but I assure you that no one else in the family will fall in this battle." Edward said slowly and Bella only nodded, seeing how truthful he was being as his eyes gave him away.

"I warned you. I knew that no vampire would leave their coven to join us as easily as he did but you were far too lost and consumed for your greed to power that you failed to see reason." Caius growled out at Aro, who was still trying to comprehend Edward's sudden act of betrayal.

"What are you idiots still doing here then? Kill them!" Aro screeched and ordered the attack.

Bella locked hands with Alice and Edward as the Volturi guard moved quickly across the open field. Her silver eyes flickered to her mate standing beside her who looked at her with her own obsidian colored ones.

"Until the very end?" Alice asked with a raised eyebrow and Bella nodded in confirmation, squeezing her hand slightly tighter with reassurance.

"Until the very end."

Blood curdling screams, shattering porcelain and the sounds of rock hard bodies crashing into one another echoed throughout the meadow as the Volturi fought against the Olympic and Denali coven. Shattered limbs, frayed fabric and pieces of flesh floated around the air, mixing in with the snow that was still falling around them.

Marcus was the first to fall of the kings, as he seemingly not only accepted but desired his death. He did not fight back against two of the newborns who had launched themselves onto him, and effectively tore his body apart into three differing components. His dismembered head rolled close to a nearby fire, with a smile still etched onto the lifeless lips. The newborn with the shaggy black hair kicked it the few remaining inches and it went up into the flames, next to the burning bodies of Chelsea, Jane and Alec. Bella had easily expanded her shield to protect her family, thus rendering their gifts useless. Once that had been done, Tanya and Kate had made quick work on them, finally satisfied that they had avenged their beloved, Sasha, who had fallen at the hands of the Volturi all those centuries ago.

Emmett fought hard against Felix, both matched equally with their speed and strength. Rosalie launched herself from the top of a nearby tree as Emmett allowed Felix to land a punch to his jaw, sending him skidding back. Satisfied with the crack he had made on Emmett, Felix momentarily allowed his ego to get the best of him and his guard went down slightly. As slight as it was, this allowed for Rosalie to land onto his neck, her fingers digging into the skin beneath his jaw. Her grip remained tightly as she launched herself into a neat and shallow backflip, effectively removing his head. She tossed it into a nearby adjacent fire with a slight smirk, and high fived Emmett who looked at his wife with nothing but pride and love in his eyes.

Esme, Carlisle, Carmen and Eleazar were locked into a heated battle involving Caius and Santiago. While neither Volturi member possessed any gifts of their own, they made up for it with their superior physical strength and battle techniques. Carlisle and Esme focused on Caius while Carmen and Eleazar focused on Santiago. Carlisle hunched over with perfect timing, and Esme rolled over across his back, effectively wrapping her legs around Caius' neck. Caius hissed and had time only to sink his teeth into Esme's thigh before Carlisle kicked his legs out from underneath him. As Caius and Esme fell to the ground, she braced her hands on the ground, arching her body up, and Carlisle body slammed into Caius' torso, effectively creating enough tension that Esme was able to pull his head off. She panted in pain and tentatively stood, Carlisle immediately at her side to help support her weight off of her injured leg. He pressed a gentle kiss to her temple and held her closer to him.

Carmen was dancing with Santiago, exchanging and deflecting blows with perfect secession. Her darkening eyes watched his movements, as his lips moved up into a sadistic smirk before feinting to the left. She followed his movements but was caught off guard as he moved to the right, past her and struck Eleazar, his fist colliding with his chest and sending him flying backwards. Carmen hissed as her eyes turned pure black as she reached into a nearby fire and grabbed a burning stake of wood. She launched herself into the air and brought the stake down, which broke upon impact but the fire spread out to his hair and his clothes. He screamed in pain, and while distracted, Carman shot her hand out and crushed his neck, turning the once ancient fighter into nothing more than ruins. Eleazar made his way back to his mate, and they quickly shared an embrace as he ran his lips throughout her hair in comfort, whispering sweet nothings.

All eyes then turned to the last three Volturi members on the field. Aro, Anton and Renata who were actively fighting Alice, Edward and Bella. Anton's gift of mental invisibility made him a formidable foe but not when Bella was able to expand her shield. Edward was able to catch sight of Anton, after he had managed to land a few critical blows. Edward's left side of his body was nothing but cracks but despite his injuries, he was able to land a solid upwards kick to Anton's head, effectively separating it from the rest of his body. Edward fell to one knee as the damage to his body began to take a toll. He knew he needed blood and soon.

Renata was more of a challenge as she was gifted with a physical shield. However, Alice was able to see her premediated attacks, and at the precise moment when the attack would land, that was when the shield was lowered. It was the same principle that went behind Bella's, the same inherent flaw of every shield be it mental or physical. Alice was able to maneuver and evade around her attacks with moderate ease, finding the loopholes and points of weakness that allowed her to pull her apart, piece by piece. In time, much like Laurent, Renata only remained as a pile of shredded flesh and bone. Alice could not stop herself as she spit her venom onto the pile at her feet and her gaze moved to where Aro and Bella stood, facing each other without movement.

"It is not too late, even now. I still offer you a chance at redemption. Join me and together we can rebuild the Volturi." Aro practically purred and Bella only shook her head.

"I have no desire to create anything with you. What my family and I decide to do once you have been eliminated will be a decision of our own design. I will not allow you to influence any part of that. The only thing you know how to create are designs of selfishness and control. The world we are going to create will have absolutely none of that." Bella retorted with a light growl.

"Very well." Aro growled and launched forward.

Bella anticipated his movements but was surprised to see that he was aiming to get around her, and to Alice. Bella's eyes widened at the sudden change of plan and shot her left hand out towards Alice, focused on ensuring her safety.

Bella felt her eyes flash and suddenly Aro was flown backwards, very similar to what had occurred with Emmett during training. Bella slapped her hands on the ground and felt her power surge through her fingertips and flow around her as she thought of her family, the Denali's and the remaining tribe members. It was her duty to protect them. She watched Alice step forward and place her fingertips against the invisible barrier, effectively separating Bella from her and the rest of the family.

"Bella, you better know what you are doing!" Alice yelled as she paced around the edges of the barrier next to Edward who only looked on with curiosity.

Bella nodded in confirmation and watched as Aro stood back to his feet shakily, clearly taken back.

"Your quarrel is with me, not my imprint." Bella hissed and charged at the ancient leader.

Aro took a few shaky steps backward and only had time to bring his arms to cover his face before Bella was on top of him, the two rolling in the snow and landing blows. Bella could feel her bones begin to slightly crack but not break from the force of his blows but she was not allowing herself to move from the position. She moved forward and wrapped her legs around his neck, effectively keeping his head in place.

"You will do no more harm." Bella hissed out as Aro squirmed beneath her hold, his eyes wide with fright.

"You will see no more evil," Bella paused as she sunk her thumbs deep into his eye sockets, causing him to scream in pain and rendering him blind, his venom from his eye sockets leaking down the side of her hands like blood.

"You will speak no more evil," Bella growled as she moved her hands to his jaws, grimacing as she felt his fangs sink deep into her palms. She pried the jaw open wide and effectively removed his lower jaw from his face, crumbling the piece in her hand.

"You will hear no more evil" Bella finished as she put her bloody hands to the sides of his head and pushed hard, satisfied as she felt his skull cracking beneath her hands. She kept the pressure steady until his head was nothing but dust.

Bella rose to her feet and felt her shield slowly return to her. As it sunk back into her subconscious, she began to feel a tad lightheaded and swayed on the spot. Alice was however quick to run over and support her, their bodies effectively becoming molded together as one once more.

Esme ran past the two and immediately took Edward into her arms, rocking him in place as they fell onto the ground. Carlisle walked over with a slight smile on his face and crouched on his knees, taking off Edward's crest that he had worn on his wrist since his son's departure. Tentatively he handed it to Edward who looked at him with surprise.

"Welcome home, son."

Bella and Alice watched the scene unfolding before their eyes and couldn't help but smile at the sight before them. They had made it.

"What now, love?" Alice asked after a few moments.

"Now…" Bella paused as she watched the remaining tribe members walk over in caution but were immediately welcomed by the two covens, smiling as a young boy barely past the age of two hugged Emmett's leg tightly with a bashful grin on his face while Rosalie played with his hair " We create our own story."
