Chapter 3: Getting started
Ron looked up from his computer, frustrated with his search for information on the Monkey Idol. His daily investigations had failed to produce anything worthwhile once more, he slumped back in his chair. "Nothing, again…" the blonde boy groaned in frustration, before sighing. His vocalizations made him sound so much older than he was.
It had been a few months since he'd arrived in the past. He was still in his preschool years and, as such, not much had happened so far. He still had no way to locate that blasted idol, or Drakken… It wasn't like he could call Betty, OR talk to Wade. He was pretty positive his hacker friend was still a toddler!
His room still looked the same as it had when he'd "arrived", the only difference being the recent picture of himself and his new friends. It was an image of Ron, with the three girls who refused to be away from him for more than a day.
The blonde boy was unsure as to why, but nearly every day so far had been spent with the three girls. Whether it was a sleepover, or a play-date, they were always together with him. He had already met with Tara's parents and Kim's parents. Kim's dad, James, had already introduced himself. His wife, Ann, had as well. But the odd thing was that, unlike the first time, James had made sure that Ron would behave.
'I could accidentally launch you into space, if you're not careful' the older man had joke/threatened, while wearing a huge smile that would have frightened any kid his age… Not that Ron had even been phased. Hell, if Ron had a dollar for every time he'd heard that line out of James, at this point he'd be able to buy the space center himself!
The blonde boy had simply stared at the older Possible, before shrugging the statement off. "If you did, I'm pretty sure you'd be out of a job… Not to mention that you'd go to jail, for endangering a young child. Then, your FORMER workplace would be placed under government watch for hiring a psycho like you…" the blonde ex-sidekick retorted.
James's reaction had been priceless, his mouth opened like a fish from the sheer shock of being told off… by a child. Ann was laughing so hard she had to sit down, afraid that she'd literally fall over. She was practically wailing, due to the amazing answer from the young boy.
After that little tiff, Kim made sure to pull him up to her room. They waited together for Tara and Bonnie, so they could start their sleepover.
Bonnie and Kim seemed to be a little better around each other than they had been. The two didn't fight or argue that much, for the most part… There was still some sort of unpleasantness between them, but they kept it to a minimum.
At the moment the blonde boy was waiting for his dad to drive him to Bonnie's house, this was the first time she'd managed to convince her parents to let her have a sleepover. It would also be the first time that he was going to visit her home, so there was that.
There were a few knocks on his door, his's mother way of informing him that his dad was waiting in the car. Ron called out a confirmation, before grabbing his already prepared bag. It contained the only things he needed for the night.
Ron arrived at the car, having finished saying goodbye to his mother. When he entered inside, the older Stoppable talked to him for a bit as they drove to his brunette friend's home. It often left him with an odd feeling… but he did think of Bonnie as his friend. He felt the same way towards their mutual friend Tara. Kim was still his best friend, his first one in his original timeline. But seeing how things were developing? It was pretty clear to him that the two other girls were rapidly approaching the same level as Kim.
Ron arrived at Bonnie's home… probably… It was too big to see completely! 'Okay… I never expected this…' the boy admitted, before shrugging it off. He bid his father goodbye, the older man reminding him to behave himself before driving off.
"Okay… now, let's hope this won't turn into a disaster…" the blonde boy spoke to no one. He moved to the front door, knocking a few times.
A few seconds later it opened, a tall teenager answering the door. She looked very reminiscent of teenage-Bonnie, with only mild differences. Said girl was a brunette as well, with short wavy hair. She wore a blue, turtleneck sweater. The woman smiled upon seeing the young boy, beaming at him. "Oh, hello Ron!" She moved aside, allowing him entry. "Are you here for Bonnie's little slumber party?"
Ron simply nodded, continuing to look at her. "Yeah, I am…" He couldn't help but stare at her beautiful face, the urge to ask who she was almost overpowering.
"Hey, Connie!" a female voice asked, from a different room. "Is little Ron here already?"
"Yeah, he is!" the brunette girl, apparently Connie, replied.
Another girl, approximately the same age, appeared on a large staircase right in front of the entrance. She was a blonde, just like Tara was. Her skin was the color of mocha, matching Bonnie's.
Ron would have greeted the two, if he'd known who they were. The last thing the boy had expected, was for the blonde girl to suddenly run up and hug him out of nowhere! "I missed you, Ron! Did you miss your favorite babysitter?" the blonde asked, holding him tightly.
'My WHAT?!', he was too stunned to answer.
"What's this about being his favorite, Lonnie? Last time I checked, he liked me more. Right, Ron?" the brunette- Connie, he reminded himself - teased.
"Ah… I…" He couldn't help but look away. Lonnie was hugging him very firmly, he was nervous just being this close to these beauties. Even if he was younger in body, he was still the same age mentally.
"Oh my! Is our little cutie embarrassed?" Lonnie asked, her tone betraying her amusement. The teasing he was being subjected to turned him even more red.
"Wow, you're right! Never thought our little Ron would EVER notice a girl!" Connie crowed, she moved closer and rubbed his head.
Ron would have loved to argue, but couldn't so much as speak at the moment. He feared that his voice would betray him, leaving him even more mortified than he already was.
"What are you doing?" questioned someone, from behind the two older girls.
It was Bonnie, her arms crossed, a clear pout on her face. "Oh well… looks like we got busted" the older brunette replied, both girls let go of Ron.
Bonnie grabbed his hand, pulling him away from her sisters. In any other situation, it would have meant nothing to him. But this time Bonnie reminded Ron of some sort of brave hero, one that had come to rescue him from a cruel fate. 'Does that make me the princess?' He banished the stray thought, both of them moving up the stairs.
"So, our favorite blonde is growing up already? And he's still SO cute!" Ron was able to hear the two talking, both loud enough for him to notice. The last thing he overheard was a few playful giggles, before he was out of earshot.
"Sorry about my sisters Ronnie, they always do this…" little Bonnie apologized, continuing to pull him along.
"It's okay…" Ron assured. 'So, those two are the ones who crafted the Food Chain…' he recalled from his past/future. Damn, just remembering something basic was still an exercise in confusion.
The two younger kids continued on, until they arrived at her room. Kim and Tara were already there, waiting.
"Ronnie!" both girls called out, as soon as they saw him. The girls rushed over, hugging him tightly. He was used to it by now, returning it in kind.
Bonnie seemed okay with the habit, for the most part. She took her seat on the soft rug on her floor.
Ron had only now noticed just how big Bonnie's room was. It was big enough for a princess… how fitting. After they'd gotten the usual greetings out of the way, the four kids decided what they wanted to play.
"Bonnie…" Tara was the one who spoke, said brunette looked up at her. "…thank you for inviting me. Th-This is my first sleepover, ever!" the blonde girl declared, a big smile on her face. It was clear that she was indeed happy about it.
"No problem, Tara! You're always invited over!" the brunette future-cheerleader assured, before looking towards Ron and Kim. "Both of you are too!"
Kim looked surprised at Bonnie's words, before nodding and smiling. It made Ron grin, happy at the positive development.
The night continued as their sleepovers usually did… They played, talked, told scary stories, and just made fun of some shows (or one of their teachers). Eventually, Ron was the only one who remained awake. Looking around himself, he noticed that all of the girls were sleeping in small sleeping bags. Even Bonnie, who had her huge bed at her disposal, chose to stay close to the others.
Even that little change was something he could be happy about. He would have taken credit for it, if he wasn't so sure that original-timeline-Bonnie was his fault from the start. That made him think… Considering the bleak, depressing future he'd escaped… was change really a bad thing?
It was the same question that had lingered in his mind for some time, did he want everything to play out the same as it had the first time? Or, did he want to change it?
Ron loved his old life with Kim, that much was crystal-clear, but this? Seeing her this happy, having more friends than before? That was fantastic. In his original timeline Kim had scared some people away, by being so perfect… Not to mention how self-conscious it had made her, convinced that she was odd compared to everyone else.
He didn't think she was odd… To him, she was special. Her uniqueness had caused him to gravitate to her.
Speaking of Kim's additional friends, Bonnie and Tara were also different in this timeline. They seemed to enjoy being close to him, with Bonnie being nicer and Tara less bashful.
Ultimately, even his sharp mind couldn't compete with his tired body. As Ron slipped away into his own peaceful rest, he found his answer.
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
Preschool was a cakewalk, a fun time for Ron Stoppable. He could use the time to plan, searching for clues as to what his next step should be. Sadly, his options were extremely limited, his interests were highly suspicious. After all, why would someone his age research villains or rare artifacts? He'd been forced to wait until he could be more independent.
So, he did the only logical thing he could do at the moment. Have a good time with his friends.
He used his days to play, keeping the atmosphere light and pleasant. He spent his nights studying, cramming as much information as he could. But he never did it to prove anything… The only reason was so he could breeze through school in the future, allowing him to stay focused on the more important things he had to achieve.
Math, Science, (ironically) History, they were all only a small part of the many subjects he made sure to know by heart! There had been a time when he'd been lazy, too unmotivated to even try. He'd made excuses, swearing that book learning wasn't for him… But now, when he had a reason? It was all too easy for him to memorize facts, to finally understand the topics that Kim had so fervently tried to help him study.
And now came his next step… high school.
Ron wasn't sure what to make of it, seeing it as a freshman again. Everything seemed so familiar, as if his nightmare had never happened to begin with.
The speech of the Assistant Principal had brought back so many memories. Seeing his old/new teacher, standing over a podium much too small to hide his large frame completely, it made him smile broadly. After the speech had concluded, the many students filed out of the auditorium. They began looking for their respective classrooms, as well as their new lockers. Following that, they moved to pick which clubs they wanted to join.
Ron didn't plan on deviating from his original job, the mascot of the Mad Dog cheer squad. He was looking forward to using it to help him stay close to his friends.
Said girls were currently busy with the cheer squad, all his female friends participating in the tryouts. As Ron walked inside, he spotted the three girls.
The blonde sidekick could already see some familiar faces on the cheer squad, among them were his friends. The first two he saw were Bonnie and Kim, the two girls seemed to be doing something he hadn't seen them do in a long time. Arguing about something.
He was about to ask what was wrong, when a blur appeared in his line of sight. He turned around to face it. In the past he may have jumped, or screamed in terror as he shielded his face. But now? He simply faced it head on. The disturbance proved to be Tara, she jumped at him, forcing him to grab her midair.
"Ronnie, you made it!" the blonde beauty enthused, smiling and hugging him tightly.
"Well, I DID promise that I would see you guys later…" Ron reminded. "Also, I thought we agreed that you're not supposed to jump me like that?"
She nodded, smiling. "We did… And I said that I'll stop, when you fail to catch me… And you always do…" Tara responded, smiling broadly, cheeks rosy.
"Tara, you're impossible…" Ron huffed, even as he continued to grin. Said blonde girl was always like this. For the nearly ten years that he'd known her in this new life, she was the first one to use every chance she could to hug him.
Ron glanced back at his two other friends, ready to ask them what the problem was… He paused upon seeing the two smiling, as if nothing was wrong. "Umm… what's up, you two?" he asked.
"Oh, nothing Ronnie…" Bonnie was the first one to talk. "Kim here just made it as the captain of the cheer team and I congratulated her!", she smiled at the end.
Kim simply nodded for conformation. "That's right, Ronnie! But only because Bonnie let me have it!" the redhead declared.
The blonde boy put Tara down, he looked the two over. They seemed to be telling the truth, for the most part. He smiled at them happily, thrilled with seeing them acting like good friends, rather than enemies. His gaze moved over to Tara, who seemed to be waiting to ask something.
"Say, Ronnie… are you going to be joining any of the clubs?" Tara inquired.
"Me?" The blonde boy had already planned to join the girls on the cheer team. Only he couldn't yet, seeing as the mascot spot was currently nonexistent.
"Yeah! I bet you can make it on the team, no problem!" Tara insisted, she jumped up and down in her spot excitedly.
While he couldn't deny that he could make the team, with little to no difficulty, it was the last thing he wanted. There were much more pressing matters to attend to. "Me, on the team?" He took a moment to 'think' about it, before ultimately smiling and shaking his head for a no. "I don't think I'll be joining the team-" Ron answered, before he was cut off.
"What?!" Kim, Bonnie and Tara all asked at the same time. "Why not?"
The blonde ex-sidekick was startled for a moment, before looking the girls over. They all seemed confused and upset. "I just don't think I'll like it there… not my kind of sport" he responded, smiling.
The girls looked like they wanted to argue, or say something, but they trusted his judgement… If he wasn't going to enjoy it, then it was pointless. "Well, as long as you find something you like…" Kim responded, making his smile even larger.
"I will! And hey, maybe I'll find myself a club in the future" he responded cryptically.
After the tryouts were finished, the four went made their way to class. Thankfully, they were all in the same class. Their teacher was an older woman who seemed to enjoy her job, she introduced herself like they were the very first class she'd ever had. Ron couldn't help but think of his previous teacher. 'I guess Mr. B. still hasn't started taking over the school with his clones…' The thought made him laugh for a moment, the rest of the class staring at him.
The seating arrangement was also a bit different than he remembered. Kim and Bonnie were on either side of him, Tara sitting right behind him. Different, yes, but definitely not unpleasant.
After the end of classes, the three girls (plus one time-traveler) left the school. They'd decided that they wanted to hang out someplace new, Ron took the liberty of choosing this time. As he stood at the entrance, he'd never felt more nostalgic.
"Bueno Nacho?" Kim read the name of the small place out loud. It didn't look all that appealing, seeing as it was almost completely empty- No, scratch that… it WAS empty! "Are you sure about this? Seems like the kind of place that you'll need a shot, after you finishing eating…" Kim commented, just like the first time they'd come here in his original timeline.
"Trust me on this, KP!" The blonde boy winked at her, before walking in.
The small group entered inside, grabbing their seats and looking around with great interest. Everything was new to them… but not to the blonde boy. Said blonde boy got up, staring at the front counter. "I'll order for you guys, just give me a sec!" the blonde boy declared, walking up to the register.
The three girls were left alone, staring at the sole boy in the group. "So… you let me be captain, eh?" Kim suddenly said, seeing as Ron was out of earshot.
"Well, we are all on the team… So, I don't really care about which one of us is captain…" Bonnie replied, looking at her redheaded friend.
Kim's eyebrow rose. "Really now? So, what was the whole deal before? You know, when you said that you were the better choice to run the team?"
Bonnie smiled. "I just thought that you might be better suited for it, in the long run…" Her smirk turned evil. "So, while you keep busy thinking about new routines and our practices… I can be with Ronnie!" she crowed, just loud enough for the two other girls to hear.
"I thought so…" Kim huffed in response. Honestly, this was far from a new conversation between the three of them. "You DO realize that I'm still not going to let you get the upper hand on me…?"
"Yeah… I know. But, I'll take every chance I can get…" the brunette replied.
Tara returned to the conversation, "Is that why you both grabbed the seats next to him in class today? I thought we agreed not to do stuff like that…" the blonde teen whined, a pout on her face.
"And we already apologized for it, Tara…" Bonnie reminded, noticing that the blonde was still unhappy. "Fine… we'll both switch seats with you every week… okay?" the brunette caved.
Tara glanced towards Kim, as if wordlessly asking if that was agreeable to her. It wasn't an issue with the redheaded teen, even she felt bad about what had happened in class.
"Okay! So, here it is!" Ron came back with two trays in each hand, handing one to each of them, before sitting himself. "So? What did I miss?" he asked.
The girls all looked at each other, as if thinking about what to say, one of them spoke up first.
"I was just telling these two that I think this place is really nice! I can't wait to try out what you got me, Ronnie!" Tara had been the first to leap at the opening Ron had unwittingly provided, she leaned on his shoulder for a moment.
'Why you sneaky, little…' Kim and Bonnie fumed to themselves, before they all tried out what the blonde boy had gotten them.
…
"So, how was it?" the blonde ex-sidekick asked. They were all on their way home, currently walking down the street. He wasn't all that worried. After all, he still recalled what they'd preferred in his previous timeline. His friends had all enjoyed it enough to agree to come back again, in the near future. 'Good… at least our spot there is secure!' It was such a little thing, compared to what he still had to do… But that restaurant was precious to him, as it was literally a remnant of his past.
"I didn't mention it before… but I WILL pay you back for treating me today, Ronnie" Kim assured, they kept walking towards her home.
Ron simply smiled, seeing his oldest friend acting the same as he remembered. "And I already said that it's–"
"It's NOT fine" the redheaded teen cut him off. "Even if you say it's okay, I still feel bad if you treat me all the time… Bonnie and Tara agree with me." She looked at the two, they nodded in response.
"Well, I don't think it's that big a deal-", he noticed their narrowed eyes. "But… if you really feel like paying me back, why not just pay me back?" Ron asked.
"Y-You know why…" Kim replied, she felt more than a little embarrassed about it.
"Your parents are still stingy, eh?" the blonde boy prompted, making her nod for conformation. He never got it, even after experiencing it the second time. Apparently, Kim's parents had decided it would be a great idea for her to get a very small, to nonexistent, allowance. It would teach her to not be so careless with money, and they were right! In the most roundabout way there was! In the future, Kim was the last person to even bat an eye about money. She just didn't care about it in the slightest! But at this moment, when she wanted to spend time with her friends, it was only something that made her feel ashamed.
He had the perfect way to deal with it!
"Well… then why don't you find a job?" the blonde boy asked, all three girls stared at him.
"A job? Me?" the redheaded teen asked, it sounded so unbelievable to her. "I-I don't think I-"
Ron cut her off, before she even started to doubt herself. "Kim, trust me on this… you can do anything! You just have to give it a go! Something simple, like… a babysitter?" the blonde sidekick suggested. He winked at her, as if there was a private joke between them.
"Oh! Um…" The redheaded girl looked embarrassed for being complimented so vehemently, she played with her fingers behind her back. "I-If you say so…"
"I agree with you, Ronnie!" Tara chimed in. "Kim, you are so much better than what you let on!"
"Tara and Ronnie are right" the brunette agreed. "You're the only one I'll ever admit is better than me… but only for now." She looked away as she finished.
"Y-You guys…" Kim looked touched. She lifted her head up, her eyes filled with much greater determination than before. "Alright, I guess I could give it a go! It might be fun, too!"
Ron and the two other girls smiled at her. Everything was going according to his plan… even if this was the same as what had happened the first time. Why fix what WASN'T broken?
…
It was only a few days later that Kim got her first job babysitting, the redheaded girl needed to look after one kid. She'd worried that it would be a nightmare! Full of screaming, or the sort of bloodcurdling scenarios that she saw frequently in Ron's horror flicks. But, to her amazement, the only thing she could focus on was the most adorable little angel she'd ever seen! She never thought that she could be charmed by something so small! And she was getting paid for this?
Best. Job. Ever!
She wished that her friends could be here, but she was pretty sure the parents of this little angel wouldn't appreciate anyone else in their home. "I guess I'll have to thank Ronnie and the girls later… won't I?" she cooed sweetly to the cute boy she held in her lap. He laughed and attempted to reach her.
'So cute!' the redheaded teen marveled, barely holding herself back from squealing.
…
Back in the blonde boy's room, Ron was busy going over more material on various topics. He could honestly say that he didn't need to any longer, as he was most likely more knowledgeable than Kim from his time! That was likely due to the fact that he'd been studying so much over the last few years. Going over that stuff as a young kid had made it much easier for him to remember! By this point he was just doing it to stay sharp and pass the time, it helped focus his mind and think more clearly.
The ex-sidekick had just gotten his parents' permission to get a pet, if he wanted one. He was thrilled to be able to see his little friend again, after he picked him up from Smarty Mart. As bad as that sounded.
His parents' reactions had been more than a little amusing, when he'd explained to them that he wanted a pet that wouldn't upset his father's allergies. They seemed touched at just how considerate their son was. It was cheating on his part, as a time traveler… But it was such a small thing, that was about to happen anyway, so no issue here!
Ron already knew that Kim would be okay with the hairless rodent, he just hoped that Bonnie and Tara would be too…
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
"A website?" the redheaded teen asked, she looked more than a little confused at the sudden suggestion from her blonde friend. Kim was sitting on her bed, staring at a smiling Ron.
"I think it's a great idea! You could get so many more offers like that!" Tara enthused. She was laying on Kim's bed, busy with some homework she still had.
"But wouldn't that mean that Kim may have to walk farther away from the neighborhood?" Bonnie pointed out, sitting on an extra chair next to Ron.
The four teens were all hanging out together again, like they always did. This time they were in Kim's room, as her house was roughly the same distance from everyone else's homes.
"I have to agree with Bonnie on this one…" Kim spoke from her spot. "I already have enough kids to look after, and I already get all the requests I need… I've got the money I wanted from it too! If anything, I sometimes just stay longer to look after them and help out. You know… when the parents are running late, or swamped-" Kim continued, before one of the girls cut her off.
"Kim, we know. …and you don't charge them extra, or sometimes at all, just because you like to help out when you can. You are awesome, yada, yada…" Bonnie spun around in her seat, before smirking at the redheaded teen.
"You make it sound like I only do it for the praise…" the young Possible pouted.
"You know that none of us think that" Tara replied from behind her. She hugged her back, making Kim smile.
"I know, but-" Kim attempted to say, before the blonde cheerleader cut her off.
"But nothing!" Tara insisted, she moved up from her place on the bed and walked up to Ron. "Ronnie? I'm having problems understanding this part, could you please help me?" she asked cutely, like she always did.
"Sure thing! Let me have a look!" He grabbed the notebook from her and started reading the problem, the blonde girl sat down on the arm of his chair.
Bonnie and Kim's eyes narrowed for a brief second, before they huffed in exhaustion. It was honestly nothing new, for Tara to cozy up as close as she could to the boy of the group. The only thing that really bothered Kim and Bonnie, was the fact that the blonde girl knew the material perfectly well…She just whined that it was too difficult to understand sometimes. Very conveniently, only when Ron was around.
And Ron was all too happy to help them with any issue they had. He was just too nice like that… and very, very, DENSE.
"You know what? Fine, I'll give it a try" Kim agreed, she leaned back on her bed. 'It couldn't end that badly…' she mused to herself.
