Chapter 38: Edolas

Through Carla's sudden revelation of another world and calming down Happy from the fact he was an alien from that alternate world, it was a lot for the survivors of the Anima to digest. She even stated that the Anima that took away the whole of Magnolia was their fault. After explaining the use of Anima in absorbing magic power to Edolas, the area was left in the silence between the remaining guildmates. Natsu and Gray took it in stride with blank expressions, but those like Erza, Juvia, and Lucy could notice the rage behind their eyes and the twitches in their cheekbones. The same rage they felt at the thought their friends have been stolen away just to be used as a power source. For Erza, it hit too close to her time as a slave in the Tower of Zeref.

"How could they do this to us just for some power!?" Lucy snarled, the ground beneath her feet smoldering from her climbing temperatures. "Fucking bastards. They even took Cynthia."

Adrian out of all of them seemed to be the most calm in his reaction. His face was a blank slate and his eyes did not betray any turmoil of emotion beneath. He had taken to stab his Ten Commandments sword deep enough into the ground to sit on and rested his chin on his knuckles. Ever so subtly the knuckles whitened from how tight Adrian was clenching them. Wendy on the other hand was the complete opposite as the light in her eyes dimmed to nothingness and as her face was stricken in both shock and horror. Her eyes frantically searched Carla, trying to find some way she was lying or none of this was the truth. She wanted to find some excuse to deny the claims that Carla was from another world, knew about the dangers of the Anima and the denizens of Edolas, and knew about its coming threat on Fairy Tail. But what really set off Wendy into an unstable fit by what came next.

"Is this really our fault?" Happy whimpered, tugging his tail close to him while Natsu held him in a comforting embrace. "Did we really destroy our home?"

"Not exactly." Carla confirmed, giving an impassive facade. "We were given a different mission from Edolas before coming here. The use of the Anima was never a part of our objective."

"That's not possible!" Wendy cried in disbelief. "You hatched from an egg in this world!"

"That's the same with Happy!" Natsu added.

Even Happy nodded in agreement with Natsu. All he knew in his life was from the moment he hatched from his egg and the first thing being the faces of Natsu and Lisanna. The rest of course being his happy life in Fairy Tail, and never once did he have memory from a different place called Edolas.

"That is correct." Carla confirmed. "Just so we're clear, I have never been to Edolas myself. As Wendy has said, I was born and raised in this world. But we were given knowledge of Edolas and the mission. We're supposed to know everything even before the moment we hatch.

"And yet," Carla paused as he pointed at Happy with a vicious frown on her face, "how is it you don't remember!? You are supposed to have the same knowledge as I did when we were eggs, but how is it you know nothing!? Why is it you know nothing of Edolas, the Anima, or even the land we came from!?"

It was impossible for Happy to answer. From the accusing tone in Carla's voice and the shock of being from another world, it was far too much for Happy to give an answer. All he could do was softly sob as he tried to make himself as small as possible to somehow escape all this. Natsu did not take Happy's sadness well and held his surrogate son close to him while leveling the meanest glare he could summon on the one that made Happy cry.

"You leave him out of this!" Natsu snarled, barring his teeth like fangs. "So what if he should remember some bullshit from another world!? That doesn't matter. He's still the same Happy that I raised when he hatched from an egg. Who I fed, played, and laughed with for all these years. So I know for a fact that he had nothing to do with this!"

Carla was actually struck with genuine fear from the ferocity delivered to her by Natsu, who was cradling Happy protectively. For a moment, she legitimately thought that he might lash out at her. Natsu stayed in place to her internal relief, but Carla's attention was averted when the air filled with dread on the rise.

The white cat's eyes landed on Wendy, whose face was shadowed by her blue hair while her shoulders shook. Yet she was the source of that awful power that was roiling off her unlike her usual Sky Dragon Slayer magic, and as it climbed higher it gained the attention of everyone else. As this new power continued to grow, it came with physical changes starting from her hair spiking out from its usual smooth texture and turning a few shades darker. Her nails slowly morphed into sharp claws, and the power soon coalesced to a dark aura surrounding her body.

"...Was it all a lie, Carla!?" Wendy finally spoke, the sheer venom shocking everyone present.

Carla shot up in alarm. "Wendy, I-"

She stopped dead in her response when Wendy raised her head to reveal a face anyone would call feral. Her brown round eyes were gone and replaced with frightening slit pupils of onyx wreathed in neon blue. Wendy's lips parted in a snarl revealing sharpened teeth akin to a canine's rather than what should belong to a human. Vein around her temples and cheeks bulged out as strange marking crept from the edges of her face. The Sky Dragon Slayer was a complete contrast to her usual kind and shy demeanor; now she looked downright ready to murder Carla on the spot. All the while, the same dreadful magics, the very same Natsu felt in the Woodsea, pulsed from Wendy's body in a dark blue twister.

"Was everything we had a sham to you!?" Wendy screamed each word she spoke sending a shockwave of power that blew away the snow-like debris. "I hatched you from an egg. I fed you. We grew up together. You are one of the few friends I had! But if you had memories already all this - then it was all a lie, wasn't it!? Everything we had was nothing to you as long as you accomplished your 'mission'! I was just a means to an end, wasn't I? I'm right, aren't I?!"

Carla could not muster a response. Every feline instinct in her body was screaming of danger as she stared back at Wendy. While Carla herself saw the girl she knew for years, her body refused that mindset and only saw a predator about to tear her apart. The other wizards of Fairy Tail did not move, too shocked at this new side of Wendy showing herself. Juvia, Erza, and Lucy stared with eyes dilated in shock while Natsu and Gray were bewildered by the power coming from Wendy. Unconsciously, their bodies settled into tense stances ready to spring into action if necessary.

"Wendy," Lucy called out softly slowly approaching the nearly berserk Wendy, "you have to stop this. For all we know, Carla has nothing to do with anything with this. This is not you, Wendy."

Those slit pupils snapped to the Demon Slayer's direction, and Lucy regretted feeling a hint of fear not from the power boring down on her but the sheer malice in Wendy's eyes. This change in Wendy actively hurt her heart the more she looked at the Sky Dragon Slayer. Whatever has taken hold of Wendy was not the same girl that Lucy brought in as a surrogate daughter.

It seemed that Lucy's words were having a positive effect on Wendy. The wrath contorting her face lessened to be less strained. The blue markings and bulging veins receded away to put back Wendy's fair facial complexion. Claws slid and dissolved back to human fingernails and her canines reduced to slightly larger teeth. Yet the slit pupils and the veritable storm of chaotic magic surrounding Wendy did not go down.

Through the roaring winds put off by the aura surrounding Wendy, none of the slayers with their enhanced hearing could pick out the sound of Adrian's footsteps crunching against the snow-like ground approaching Wendy. The daughter of Grandeeney did not notice until she felt another's hand clasp over her own right hand comfortably. Attack instincts heightened by aggression reacted first with Wendy snapping forward to claw at the intruder with her left hand having regrown the claws to do so.

They stopped mere inches from making contact with flesh when Wendy beheld her would-be victim to be Adrian. Her eyes widened in shock and horror at what she had almost done to her crush that all traces of her transformation vanished, including the dreadful aura. She was halfway in taking a step back in both fright and the need to get herself away from Adrian for being the sole reason she almost hurt him. But the same hand that was outstretched was gripped by the God Slayer's and before Wendy knew it she found herself pulled into a one-arm embrace with her body pressed against Adrian's torso.

"It's going to be alright." Adrian said soothingly, his hand rubbing comforting circles on Wendy's back. "It's going to be okay. We are will figure this out, but now we have people to save. Our guild is in trouble, and we are the only ones that can stop it."

"Got something cooking in that little head of yours?" Gray wondered, a shared smirk growing among the 'survivors' of Fairy Tail.

"Just a little." Adrian said. "What we know is that our friends weren't killed, only kidnapped. Meaning they are alive. Meaning we can save them and get this whole mess done with."

"And all we gotta do is fly through that Anima thingie to where they took our friends." Finished Natsu in bravado, pumping his fists together with licks of crimson flames. "Alright, I'm getting fired up. Let's get our family back and made these bastards pay for leveling down our town."

"A little less eloquent, but Salamander is right." Juvia spoke up. "As members of Fairy Tail, it is our duty to make these fiends pay for this transgression."

"They need a little payback for wrecking our home." Gray added.

"If that's settled," Adrain trailed off as his eyes locked with Carla, "Now then. Considering your so-called allegiance with Edolas, I need to know if there is going to be a complication. Are you with us or against us?"

Carla bristled, her hair slightly becoming taut like a cat. "I was never against you to begin with. But if you are going to take anything of merit from me, then I would like to point that we only have two Exceeds and too many of you to carry through the Anima."

Adrian hummed in thought as his eyes roamed over the group before he called out. "Who among us can fly on their own?"

It came as a surprise to Carla when Lucy and Natsu answered when wings of fire erupted from their backs. Gray grumbled low in slight envy that he couldn't use his ice for any sort of sustained flight. Adrian himself also gave a nod as he transformed the Ten Commandments into its Stormbreaker form.

"Here's what we'll do." Adrain exclaimed in a tone that left no argument. "Happy, Carla, you two have will carry Gray and Juvia. Lucy, Natsu, either one of you has to carry Erza. I am sure even in her weakened state she would never want to miss out on this."

Erza gave a weak smile in agreement with Adrian's assessment. In unison, Natsu and Lucy first took flight to the skies with the former carrying Erza towards the Anima. Carla and Happy grabbed onto the backs of Juvia and Gray respectively and granted their first time experience of soaring into the skies. Juvia had given a high-pitched holler before it settled into joyous laughter of flying for the first time, but Gray would never admit to the so-called high-pitched squeak of slight fear he had when he found his feet not on the ground so suddenly. Not one could deny the wide grin on Natsu's face at the ice user's predicament.

Lastly, Adrian held Wendy tightly by slinging one arm underneath her left arm. The embrace resulted in pushing Wendy to his chest. It was fortunate that Adrian was unable to see Wendy's face turn scarlet from embarrassment. That did not stop the Sky Dragon Slayer to snake her hands around Adrian to keep herself there. In the meantime, Adrian spun Stormbreaker by its leather loop and let it loose to the sky, allowing the thrown weight of the weapon to lift them in flight to the Anima.

Together the Slayers, Erza, and the Exceeds rose to the bright center of the whirling tempest that was the Anima. As they got closer, all present felt a pull on their bodies and it became harder to see as the bright light was too much to keep their eyes open. Yet they still pressed on even as they had to close their eyes to get themselves into the new world. For a moment, it seemed that the world around them was just naught as everything became nothing. A complete void with only the bright white light blinding their vision.

But a short moment it was. Then, they all found themselves falling through a lime green sky.

(Edolas)

"AAAAAH, WHY AM I FALLING!?" Screamed an irate Natsu, currently flailing his arms to no avail. "WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED TO MY MAGIC!?"

"WHAT THE FUUUUCK!?" Screamed a very angry Lucy in an uncontrolled spin.

"I officially hate falling!" Cried Gray, trying to get some semblance of control.

"Don't worry, my love." Juvia replied, managing to get a hold of Gray. "I'll use my water body to cushion the fall - !"

Her expression turned to shock when she realized that her magic was not responding to her. Not a drop of water was summoned nor even her black divine waters. She felt oddly naked without the feel of her water magic that she has known her whole life, but it also the immediate danger that she and her love were falling without a way to land safely.

The only one who was able to still fly was Adrian, but even he couldn't feel his magic well. For some reason, it refused to be out of his body and he couldn't revert the Ten Commandments into its alternate forms. He knew that if he was experiencing a loss of magic then so was Wendy. Gritting his teeth, he maneuvered himself in the direction of the free-falling Erza, who was accidentally let go by Natsu when he lost his magic. Adrian to fly underneath and catch Erza onto his shoulder albeit with a struggle given the older woman was much larger than the twelve-year-old boy. It also meant that he was unable to get anyone else unless he risks dropping both Erza and Wendy.

Fortunately for the others, they had the luck of falling through a weird flora that took the form of trees growing out huge ballooning bulbs. They fell through them without injury till their fall was broken enough they all simply bounced off the last ones and dropped to solid ground with some groans. Natsu had the slight misfortune of falling by the back of his head first, then followed by his girlfriend literally sitting down on his face on her landing.

Natsu's words came out in muffles while his hands trailed out, accidentally trailing over Lucy's body. She couldn't hold down the shiver of pleasure running through her body. It didn't help that Natsu's attempt at voicing his complaints was sending out vibrations that were doing wonderful things in proximity. Unfortunately, this wasn't the time for pleasantries as Lucy looked down at Natsu with an annoyed if also sly smirk.

"Natsu dear, while I appreciate this," Lucy spoke, grabbing her lover's hand before they trailed too much, "this is not really the time. Maybe later when we have some alone time."

With that said, Lucy stood back up and off of Natsu. What she didn't expect was for Natsu to gasp for breath as if he was out of air. In fact, his face was a bit blue until color came back.

"Thanks Lucy." Natsu exclaimed. "I thought I was never gonna breath again."

A sweatdrop went down Lucy's forehead. Just now did Lucy remind himself that the man she fell in love with was more than occasionally a complete dunce. A lovable hunk of a dunce, but a dunce nonetheless.

Carla and Happy flying magic disappeared and left the cats tumbling down the balloon flora. Happy landed on his stomach with his eyes in a daze while Carla landed with more grace on her feet while giving Happy her usual stink eye.

Gray had the mindset to hold Juvia close to him and use his body as a shield against the ground. The two tumbled across the dirt with Gray taking the brunt of it on his back. It eventually ended with himself on his back (without a shirt) while a dazed Juvia lied on top of him. As the duo came to, they both came to a sudden realization of their positions. More specifically being that Gray's face up to his nose was pressed into the confines of Juvia's bosom, and much to Gray's horror he thought of the feel of them as the softest and most plump pillows. Simultaneously, both became red in the face as they stared back at each other, but it was Juvia who was the first to jump back to straddling Gray's thighs.

"Uoh~, forgive me, my darling Gray." Juvia apologized profusely, her face bashful. "I did not mean for that."

Gray couldn't form a response, too busy trying to wrap around the sinful thought still rampant in his head. Though while Juvia was trying to apologize, her thoughts were of an entirely different subject.

'I felt his breath on my chest.' Juvia thought in bliss, her hands idly touching her bosom. 'His breath felt so warm. Such a wonderful sensation.'

Finally, Adrian carrying both Wendy and Erza came down to the ground. His landing was not so smooth as Adrian had to push his feet into the earth effectively trying to anchor himself instead of falling into a tumble. He held his balance to the last minute to allow Wendy to get on her own feet and help settle Erza on the ground. Unlike before where she was slowly getting better, Erza looked like she was in a perpetual state of exhaustion ready to collapse into unconsciousness at any moment. Her eyes were closed and her breathing was labored, but there was no sign of her recovering.

"What's happened to Erza?" Wendy exclaimed in worry. "It's like she isn't getting any more magic."

"All of us are having the same problem." Adrian added, examining his hands as he clenched them to test their feeling. "It has to be this world. Something about it is preventing us from using our magic or recovering it."

Then an epiphany came to Adrian's mind and it showed on his face contorting to a stunned expression. He became silent while his right hand rummaged into the confines of his trenchcoat and only a moment later did he fish out something. In that hand was the bottle of red pills that were given by the Jellal lookalike. It seemed odd to Adrian why Mystogan gave it to Adrian under the pretense of such importance just before the Anima, but now there was some connection Adrian was figuring out.

'Did he know all about this?' Adrian thought, eying the small bottle in his hand. 'Perhaps even to prepare for this new world.'

His suspicions continued to grow, but he could not give a concrete conclusion. A dangerous thought came to Adrian's head, one that made his logical scream no. The need to discover a possible use in these foreign lands outweighed his precaution. Popping the cap open, Adrian dropped a single red pill into an awaiting hand and held it above his mouth.

'In for a penny, in for a pound.' Adrian thought with slight worry.

Tensing himself for whatever may happen, Adrian opened his mouth and dropped the pill which was then swallowed down his gullet. He was unaware of the apprehensive eyes from his comrades staring at him as if waiting for some disaster from the pill he took. The air was still in silence as they all waited for whatever reaction would become of Adrian. Seconds passed and they all began to relax when they were sure of themselves that nothing was going to happen.

Suddenly, Adrian's eyes widened as the magic within him that refused to come out rushed out in fervor. A gale burst off Adrian's form from his awakening magic coming to the surface, enough the wind pressure bent the surrounding flora and blew away loose pebbles. It settled to a white aura around Adrian's body till it dimmed away. Flexing his fingers, Adrian gave one last try of his magic and a smile broke out on his face when he was able to summon a black orb with a pure white corona from his palm.

"Looks like whatever Mystogan gave me is the answer to our magical problem in this world." Adrian said, holding out the bottle of red pills to everyone else. "So come on over and get your medicine. We probably will need all the magic we can muster to get all our friends back."

They may now be in a different world with no way of direction, at the very least they were comfortable in the fact they had their magical might to prepare them. It will be very much needed in the near future against the adversaries this world has to offer.

I am going to write and post another to follow up on this one, then work on Fate: Burning Heaven, The Sins' Return, then Silver Legacy. Wonder what is in store for these Fairy Tail Slayers once they meet their counterparts? As well as a familiar face Natsu and Happy have never thought to ever see again.

Up next is Chapter 39: Another Fairy Tail
