A/N: Enjoy the Sacrifice guys. There is very little dialogue. Btw I write in British English, so tend to write 'realise' instead of 'realize' for example.

She had made a mistake, Caroline thought to herself, as she walked away from the tomb. Her shoulders were tense and she felt regret wash over her. She shouldn't have left without Tyler, Caroline criticised herself.

Of course, she had begged Klaus for the safety of her friends, but she realised now how unlikely it is that he would listen. He wouldn't change his plans for one baby vampire, especially at this late notice. The man had waited centuries for this ritual. Any uncertainty was probably unacceptable in his eyes.

Though, it did hit her that Klaus had freed her. But, that was an exception, Caroline told herself. There was no way that he would also free Tyler. Caroline took a deep breath and decided it was time to act. She had to take matters into her own hands and get Tyler out of there. 'No time to waste,' She muttered out loud before running back to the tomb.

Caroline managed to enter the tomb and was surprised to find it empty. The tall blonde stood there silently. What did this mean? Had Klaus listened to her after all? Or had he simply moved Tyler to a different location?

She was startled to hear movement behind her.

'Blondie?' She heard the familiar voice of Damon say.

Caroline looked at him with raised eyebrows. 'Damon?' If he was the rescue party colour her surprised.

The Salvatore looked around the tomb in confusion. He was probably perturbed about the lack of restraints on her. Yup, she could leave at any time.

His gaze finally settled on the broken chains on the ground. His expression changed.

Damon turned around and caught her eyes, trying to read her. 'Katherine said you would be here,' He said as he looked her over, 'But you don't look like you need much rescuing.'

Caroline thought it was best if she was honest. 'Klaus let me go, ' She said. Why did she feel guilty saying that?

'Why?' Damon frowned. He was probably wondering what Klaus' angle was.

Caroline remembered the reason Klaus had given her, 'You are full of life, look at you lighting up this whole tomb with your light... There is no question about it that you should live, Caroline.' The thought of Klaus' words had given her a warm feeling in her stomach. But she thought it was better not to tell Damon. He wouldn't understand anyway what Klaus saw in her.

'I honestly don't know,' Caroline lied, 'Klaus came up to me, unchained me, and simply mentioned that there had been a change in plans.' She sighed. 'He didn't elaborate.'

Damon groaned in frustration. His plans had probably been ruined, Caroline thought.

'What about Tyler Lockwood?' Damon asked in his second attempt, 'Katherine said he would be here too.'

Caroline nodded in response and said, 'Yup, he was here, I don't know what happened to him, though. Last I saw him he was still in the tomb.' Caroline looked at where Tyler had sat. 'That's why I came back, I wanted to save him.' She wasn't lying.

Damon hit the wall in anger. The noise of it echoed in the tomb. 'God damn it,' Damon cursed.

That was probably the first time Caroline felt compassion for the older Salvatore brother. He really loved Elena. He would turn the world upside down to save her, and that possibility had been taken away from him. Though, maybe he would find another way, Caroline thought, Damon is not one to give up.

It was getting late now. Remembering her resolution not to live in ignorance anymore, Caroline tried to locate where the Sacrifice would take place. She guessed it would be somewhere in the woods. As a human, she would never think of stepping foot in the woods alone at this time of night. But one of the advantages of being a vampire is that she felt safer in the dark. Except on nights like these where the full moon looked down at her.

Wherever she went, the moon followed. It was always there, high above the crowns of the trees. Caroline paused and stared at the moon as if to challenge it to hurt her. It was almost as if the moon responded. Because before long Caroline heard a howl that made her shiver. There is a wolf out there, no doubt about it now.

She picked up a stick that seemed sturdy enough, this was the best weapon she got. Stick in hand, she tried to move as quietly as possible.

Maybe acquiring knowledge wasn't the way to go tonight after all. Heck, a werewolf bite could kill her.

Caroline decided to go back home then, she figured she would be of more use if she was alive.

The blonde tried to remember where she had come from. Caroline pivoted her feet as she looked around. As she did that, she accidentally stepped on a branch that cracked loudly. A shiver went down her spine again and instinctively she started to run.

That had been the wrong decision, Caroline thought, as a couple of moments later, a wolf appeared in front of her. And he was big. And scary. And familiar. It was Tyler.

Maybe he would recognise her. Caroline forced a smile at the wolf hoping he would spare her. It's funny how a smile is her defense mechanism, she thought.

The wolf stared at her with its big eyes before moving quickly and biting her in the arm. Thankfully, Caroline was able to stop him from taking another bite, with her stick. The wolf had bitten into the stick instead of her limb allowing Caroline just enough time to slip away.

She didn't look back once. Caroline knew she was going to die anyway, but she wanted her friends to find a recognisable body at least.

As she got home, she called Stefan. He didn't answer. Caroline sat down on her bed, looking at the wound on her arm. It didn't look that bad, yet. 'Yet' being the key term. She let out a deep sigh. What a rollercoaster. First, she thought she would die at the Sacrifice. Then she thought she would live. And now she is going to die again. Well, at least she can say goodbye to her mum. That's one improvement compared to the last time she thought she was going to die.

Caroline kept waiting for someone to update her on what was going on, but no one did. She wasn't sure if that was a good thing or not. Getting tired of staring aimlessly at her phone, she grabbed a notebook and started writing her thoughts down. It helped.

As she was writing, Caroline realised something. Klaus had let Tyler go. She was happy that she could have made a difference for him. Though, she wasn't completely sure of that. Maybe Damon would have rescued him, too.

The writing calmed her down enough to fall asleep, but it wasn't a restful sleep.

In the morning, Stefan gave her the summary of what had happened during the Sacrifice.

Caroline was glad to hear that Elena was alive, and that Jules had indeed been the one to be sacrificed, and not Tyler.

What horrified her though, was the fact that Matt had been turned into the vampire to be sacrificed. Caroline tried to guess Klaus' thought process in picking Matt. He must have assumed that since Matt dumped her, they weren't exactly friends. And he also knew that Matt hated vampires. So Klaus with his twisted mind must have thought it fitting he became one before he died.

That's the difference between her and Klaus she thought. He liked revenge. Caroline was heartbroken because she and Matt hadn't been just exes, they had known each other their whole lives.

It saddened her how Vicky and Matt had been the victims of a world they had nothing to do with. A world they never asked for was forced on them and then they had died.

She hated how she technically couldn't blame Klaus. Because how could he have known how important Matt was to her. He probably thought he was doing her a favour. All Klaus knew is that Matt had hurt her so badly, that she had cried in Klaus' arms.

She shook her head and listened to the other things Stefan had to say.

Apparently, Elijah had double-crossed them and saved Klaus from Bonnie's wrath.

On the day of the funeral, Caroline lay down a red rose at Matt's grave. She was wearing a long-sleeved black dress. 'I am sorry,' She whispered. 'This is my fault.'

They were having a joined funeral today, Matt and John had died in the crossfire.

Other than Matt's mother, it was just her and her friends that day. Kelly had made it back in town in time to bury her son, she had now lost both of her children.

She knew Kelly didn't like her, but Caroline couldn't help but feel terrible for her. The woman didn't stay around to chat after. She had no reason to ever come back now.

After a while, small groups had started to form. Jenna was embracing Alaric, who was holding her tightly. Stefan was talking to his brother a bit further away. And the others were still lingering around Matt's grave like her. Everyone had been close to Matt.

Being at a graveyard reminded her of her own impending death. She knew she needed to let them know before everyone started to leave.

'Guys, I need to tell you something,' Caroline said finally. Her voice carried and startled everyone. It sounded serious. Caroline rolled up her sleeve and showed Elena and Bonnie the throbbing wound on her arm.

Elena gasped and Bonnie immediately moved closer, her gaze examining the wound. Bonnie's expression changed from focused to sad, she probably knew.

'Tyler bit me,' Caroline provided giving them a sad smile.

The expressions on the faces of her friends made everything worse. It made her realise how real the situation was. She was dying. Elena and Bonnie wrapped their arms around her. Caroline was breathing heavily and tears had begun making their way back on her face again. Elena and Bonnie started making empty promises, like how they would find a way, but Caroline didn't believe any of it.

She noticed Stefan staring at her. They had grown close and Caroline wanted to hold him too. His expression was unreadable.

Hope you liked the changes I made in canon. The next chapter will be about the werewolf bite.
