The Morrigan. The Phantom Queen of Celtic myth. Goddess of fate and war. Despite being known as a goddess of war, The Morrigan is for the most part a benevolent deity, even though she finds amusement in mortal conflicts. While not a goddess of trickery or chaos by trade, mortals have managed to earn the favor of The Morrigan through these methods.
One of these mortals who have managed to earn the favor of The Morrigan is the Wizard known as James Potter, and his wife Lily Potter (née Evans) by association. Being a goddess of fate, The Morrigan knew of the dark fate that awaited the people of her domain if she didn't intervene. However due to divine law, she couldn't interfere too much in the mortal realm directly, but she could still do a lot by proxy, a champion. Seeing as a pair of the Japanese deities owed The Morrigan a few favors, due to losing a few games of poker against the Phantom Queen, The Morrigan decided to cash in on a few of those favors.
One of the favors was paid in by the Japanese goddess of death, Izanami, in the form of a soul-fragment, but not from just anyone from the Japanese death-goddess' domain. One of the most infamous yokai in legend, Tamamo-no-Mae. The legendary Nine-Tailed Fox. Amaterasu, the Japanese goddess of the sun, paid off two of the favors she owed The Morrigan by giving the Phantom Queen a blank Kyuubi-soul and giving the soul her blessing.
With the basic template of her champion complete, all that was left was for The Morrigan to find someone suitable to carry and give birth to her champion and let her, as it was basically guaranteed that the champion would be female, grow up and develop.
