CHAPTER I
Mystic Falls
"Caroline you don't have to go."
Matt pleaded. He stood in front of Caroline and tried to convince her to stay in Mystic Falls.
After Sheriff Forbes' funeral, Caroline switched her humanity off and just like any other humanity free vampires, she went off a feeding frenzy around town. Luckily, no casualties and severe injuries to her victims. They were just unconscious or in dazed. Matt searched for her to try bring back her humanity. He drove all around the town until he saw a trail of unconscious bodies near the boundary of Mystic Falls and found Caroline on the hood of the car.
"I can hear your heartbeat, Matt." Caroline looked at Matt in the eye. "I can smell the blood in your veins. I want to eat you but I'm resisting. Why? Because you're my friend, Matt."
"Then that means you still care." Matt said. "Turn on your switch, Care. Please."
"No." Caroline declined firmly and shook her head "I'm enjoying this right now. I like not caring for other people. I like being selfish."
"Care, this is not you." Matt convinced desperately.
"That's sweet of you Matt." Caroline chuckled, "but I'm still leaving this stupid town." She opened the driver's door and went inside the car.
"Where are you going?" Matt panicked as he approached the driver's side.
"Don't know. I don't have a destination in mind." Caroline shrugged, "I guess I'll go where I can be reckless and there's a lot of people to eat." She started the engine and looked at Matt. "Tell the others to not look for me. Well, if they care enough to ask about me."
Matt shook his head. "No Care, you know we care about you. Please don't go."
"Oh save your speech, Matt." Caroline snickered, "Don't worry, okay? I'll be fine."
It's been days since Caroline left Mystic Falls. She enjoyed her road trip and lost track her location. Her established routine was just to stop to feed then drive away or sometimes stop at a bar to party and get herself drunk. She enjoyed being like this. Humanity off. Alone. Adventure. Letting loose. Away from people she knows.
Caroline hummed as she drove until she felt hungry. She whistled, "I guess it's time to feed. Now where can I find a good meal..." She parked in front of a bar. "ooh, there's a hottie over there. Looks delicious." she grinned and eyed the man.
The man noticed her and smirked. She gave him a seductive smile and beckoned him to come near. "Well hello there, beautiful." the hottie flirted. Caroline smiled, "Hello."
"Want to have a drink?" he offered.
Caroline looked at him in the eye and flirted, "Ah yes. I'm kind of thirsty right now." Her eyes dilated, "Stay calm and don't you dare scream. Just enjoy my lips on your neck." She grinned mischievously and attacked him.
Rousseau's, New Orleans.
Every night the place was full of vampires. Some enjoyed their night intoxicated while others (mostly day walkers) entered with tourists on their arms for their meals. This was the common scenario since the Original family came back at New Orleans.
When the Originals left Mystic Falls, they decided to visit The Big Easy. The city that was once theirs and the one they've grown to love. As soon as they arrived, they crossed paths with Marcel much to their surprise. They thought Klaus' adoptive son died when their father ventured his way to the city in the past. Marcel approached them cautiously and the Originals didn't know how to receive his gestures. Marcel did silently challenge them for a while but quickly gave up because he realized he could never win against his adoptive father. He knew that they doubt his loyalties so he opted to do his best to be back in their good graces instead. He told the family that he waited for them to return and gave his authority rights over the vampires in the city to the family.
The Originals were also quick to realize that Marcel must've something to do with what happened in past with Mikael. They suspected that he was involved. They doubted all of his movements until they were half convinced that he really wanted to amend their broken trust. Still, they put him in arm's length. He's closer to them than the other vampires but still in arm's length.
As Marcel publicly declared that he just acted as a proxy for his adoptive father while he was out of the city, Klaus was pleased and gladly took his authority back. He didn't forget to display his power in front of his people. He left no room for the vampires to complain for the sudden change of leadership. Once again, the family was back to their rightful throne and live up to their reputation. They were feared and respected amongst the others. No one dared to challenge them within their vampiric circle.
Now that the Originals are back, the witches panicked and tried to overrule the vampires and claim the city as their own. They claimed that their ancestors didn't like the presence of the Originals and wants to drive the family away from the city. They attacked the vampire faction a couple of times already but they lose badly every single time, especially the latest one. They went for abduction and Klaus gone wild for bloodshed. While the witches are busy of coming up another plan to attack, the vampires enjoy themselves.
Kol and Marcel challenged each other to see who can drink the most while Klaus watched them for his entertainment.
"Looks like our older brother decided to join the fun Nik." Kol said as he raised his glass to where Elijah was. Klaus and Marcel turned their heads to watch Elijah approach.
"Hello brother, what can we do for you?" Klaus greeted.
"Well I have news that you, Niklaus, can never disregard." Elijah informed as he fixed his suit.
"And that would be?" Klaus arched an eyebrow.
"Did the witches.." Marcel asked.
Elijah shook his head "I believe that this information does not involve with the current issues in our city."
"If it isn't involve with the current war then why do you make it sound like this information is valuable?" Kol asked in curiosity.
"For starters, I know Niklaus and I know he can't ignore this." Elijah said while he stared at Klaus intently.
Klaus' curiosity peaked and stared at his brother impatiently, "Just get to the point Elijah."
Elijah looked at the three people in front of him. Marcel and Kol looked at him with interest while Klaus wore a stony expression like he is expecting something bad.
"Miss Forbes is in New Orleans."
Elijah observed the reactions of the three. Marcel looked confused. "Probably because he doesn't know how the name can bring such an impact to them especially Niklaus." he thought. Elijah also observed Kol's reaction. He had a blank expression at first and when it finally sink in, he grinned mischievously. "Now that's an interesting news Elijah."
Elijah noticed Klaus froze at his statement. He saw how Klaus' stony expression turned to surprise to happy then sour. Elijah raised an eyebrow at the last one. "Are you certain that it's her?" Klaus asked. His voice was calm but Elijah can recognize the hidden rage within.
Elijah was about to respond when Camille approached the group. "Hello everyone!" she greeted, "Elijah! I'm surprised to see you here."
Elijah nodded his head politely at Camille in return. "So, what can I get you guys? Do you want another bottle of.." Camille started.
Klaus interrupted her and waved off, "Run along Camille. We're having a serious conversation here and your presence is not needed."
Camille was dumbfounded.
Marcel looked surprised.
Kol whistled in enjoyment.
Elijah was indifferent and unaffected by Klaus' behavior.
Camille left immediately due to embarrassment. She didn't even bother to say goodbye.
"What the hell man?" Marcel scolded.
Klaus' expression showed he was unbothered with the way he treated Camille, "I don't have time for this, Marcellus."
Kol tapped Marcel's shoulder. "Let it go, man. Trust me you don't want to deal with Nik right now."
"Answer me, Elijah!" Klaus snarled when Elijah didn't answer him after the interruption.
Elijah didn't waver but instead took a seat in front of Klaus "Yes, I believe that it was Miss Forbes that I've met earlier."
Klaus clenched his jaw. He was furious. Why did Caroline meet Elijah instead of him? Wasn't he the one she should seek out when she decides to visit New Orleans?
Kol wanted to aggravate his hybrid brother more so he asked, "So, why did the two of you meet?"
"We merely bumped into each other while I was on my way here. She was a bit..." Elijah trailed and looked at Klaus. Klaus glared at him darkly. Elijah cleared his throat and continued slowly, "different."
Klaus caught on with what his brother meant and immediately stood up, "Where is she?"
"We bumped at a bar near the cemetery, Niklaus."
Klaus stormed off. With his stance, it was obvious that the Original hybrid was enraged.
"What do you mean by different, brother?" Kol asked. Elijah sighed "I think Miss Forbes is not being her own self right now."
Kol finally understood and reacted, "Really? Now that spices things up!"
"Can someone please enlighten me who is this girl?" Marcel huffed.
"You'll meet her soon, pal. I'm sure Nik will find her." Kol replied. "And I warn you, you'll be surprised at Nik." He chuckled while Elijah smirked.
"Bloody brothers! Leaving their little sister behind while they have fun." Rebekah cussed as she walked her way to Rousseau's.
"What the bloody hell?!" Rebekah cursed as she saw a familiar blonde across the street, "Was that Caroline?" She followed the blonde quietly making sure that her presence remained unknown to the other vampire. She realized that the blonde was with a human. "What is she doing? Is she going to feed on the human? What the hell ever happened to her bunny diet?" She thought. She watched as Caroline feed on the human. "What is wrong with her? I thought to feed on humans was a big no no to her."
Caroline stopped sucking and bit her wrist when the human was on the verge of dying. She fed the human with her blood and compelled the human to forget and leave. When the human was finally out of their sight, Caroline called out. "You can come out now."
"Crap." Rebekah thought. She was about to go out from her hiding place when she heard another voice, "Well I'm surprised. I never thought I'd see you feed straight from the vein, love."
Klaus stepped in their view. He smirked at Caroline and Rebekah remained at her hiding spot.
"Oh, it's you." Caroline replied as she faced Klaus and crossed her arms.
Klaus' smirk widened as he approached Caroline but he still kept a safe distance between the two of them. He stared at her intently.
Rebekah rolled her eyes as she witnessed the scene before her. "Oh God. Can't Nik just stop staring at her and ask her why the bloody hell is she here?" She thought.
Caroline started to get annoyed by the lack of words between the two of them and asked, "What are you doing here?"
"And hello to you too, Caroline." Klaus greeted smugly as he placed his hands on his back.
Caroline rolled her eyes.
"I was told that there was a new vampire in my city. So, I figured that I should meet the vampire personally."
"Wait. Are you saying that I'm in New Orleans?" Caroline stated in surprise.
Klaus paused and blinked his eyes. "Why yes, sweetheart. You're in my city right now. I thought it was your intention to come here."
"No." Caroline said firmly and shook her head, "I have no intention of coming here. I've pretty much avoided this place! Damn that bitch!"
Klaus clenched his jaw and his protective posture emerged, "Now tell me sweetheart, who's this bitch you're referring to? Did she harm you?"
"Does it matter?" Caroline sighed in bitterness, "It's not like you still care."
Klaus tensed, "What happened, Caroline?"
"Nothing!" Caroline answered vehemently, "And if you excuse me, I'm still hungry."
Klaus moved a step closer to Caroline. "It's not like I'm against of you feeding on the vein but would you mind if I ask why love?"
Caroline smiled at him sarcastically. "As you can see, I have no humanity right now. I'm actually entertained by the thought of not caring at all. It's fun!"
"Oh, I can see that sweetheart. When I saw and noticed your change, I instantly assumed you flipped your humanity but what you did to the human a while ago was a bit peculiar."
Caroline gave him a puzzled look.
"How many have you fed on since you've arrived, love?"
"Well, four humans including earlier. God! I almost fed on a vampire but he was kind of hot, you know. I wonder why I didn't notice that he was a vampire..."
Klaus chose to ignore her comment. "You've fed on three people already and there was no report that there were dead bodies found in the city." Klaus hummed thoughtfully. "I assume you fed them your blood and compelled them too?"
Caroline rolled her eyes. "Obviously."
"Sweetheart, most vampire with no humanity doesn't bother to snatch, eat and erase. They just suck the blood out and move to another. Common knowledge, really."
Caroline scoffed, "Please, if this is your way of telling me that I'm a good person, a light, blah, blah, blah. I don't want to hear it, Klaus."
Klaus narrowed his eyes, "Unfortunately darling, I'm not planning on leaving you like this."
"Say what? You better stay away from me, Klaus!" Caroline threatened.
"I will not turn blind eye to what's happening to you, Caroline! I can't!"
"Stop that! Stop saying things that you don't actually mean, Klaus! I've had enough! You're just a big bad hybrid to me! Nothing more, nothing less!"
"And you mean something to me, Caroline! Much more than anyone has ever been!" Klaus bellowed. He was tired of being rejected by Caroline. He has these unexplained emotions towards her that even though they are apart for a long time, it never wavered. It's always been there. And now, he's lost and mad and have thousand of questions about her current situation.
He heard voices from his vamp hearing but apparently, Caroline doesn't care. She must've thought that it might just be from mere group of humans but Klaus knew better and cursed. He shouldn't lose control in public.
"Let's continue this chat at an another place, shall we?"
"What?"
In a flash, Klaus snapped Caroline's neck and caught her body. "Sorry love. We're at war right now and I don't want anyone to know about you or else you will be in danger." Klaus carried Caroline's body and vamped away.
Rebekah went out of her hiding spot. "Seriously? Nik have not noticed my presence? Was he too distracted?" She scoffed. "Caroline without humanity? Feeding on humans? No intentions of being here? The bitch?" Rebekah shook her head and sighed. Too many information in one night.
"But seeing Nik tonight?" She thought and smiled. "Oh, Caroline, you have no idea the effects you have on my brother. If you only knew how much of a sap he is when it comes to you. You make him bearable."
Now, time to get some answers.
