Donna: Welcome back to Reaction News 56, I'm Donna Fern here with my partner Jim Rhine, and we're bringing you the latest stories.
Donna: Starting off, Greensville University is closed until further notice after it was reported that one of its students tested positive for COVID 19.
Jim: Yikes, has anyone else tested positive since?
Donna: While we don't have any names yet, at least 4 other students have tested positive since then.
Jim: Has the school commented yet?
Donna: Earlier the dean gave us a statement saying "we as a community take pride in our health department and put faith in our students' judgement, this recent outbreak does not represent us as a whole."
Jim: You can't be too trusting though, we all have to do our part during these hard times, social distance and wash your hands when necessary. And wearing a mask won't hurt either.
Donna: Thanks for the advice Jim, however, since these cases popped up the school has given its students the option to stay on campus in their dorms, or leave after taking a COVID test, regardless of your choice, classes will be virtual until further notice.
Jim: On to our next story this morning, police arrested a group of drug dealers near the old train station on "Hitchhiker's street" Last night during a sting. About 5 men have been caught and are facing up to 3 years behind bars.
Donna: Five men?
Jim: Police suspect they were all apart of the same gang and had set up shop close to the station, we're still waiting for the police to reveal what drugs they seized during the sting. We do know however, that no officers were hurt during the operation and the suspects all came quietly.
Donna: Isn't that good to hear? Anyway, now onto Toby with the weather.
Toby: Thanks Donna, now today will be mostly cloudy with a bit of sun here and there with a high of 38 degrees. Later tonight however, we're going to getting a bit of rain and the temp will drop down to 32 degrees, if you're going out tonight make sure to bring a coat and umbrella with you. Now back to you Donna.
Donna: Thanks Toby, we'll be right back after the break. Coming up, is talk of the station being remodeled true? Stay tuned to find out.

I tuned into another station and waited a few seconds before flipping it when some generic rap song about drugs and guns came on.
"Great, guess we'll be busting out the fried and true playlist then."
Driving for little over an hour was one thing, but driving for little over an hour without any good music to listen to was a whole other experience entirely. All that was playing right now were a myriad of either generic rap songs praising gang violence and sex, or the god awful corporate tier type of songs that companies frequently used in advertising this month's new car, the difference being as small as two additional cup holders, or a different screen to connect your phone to. I had my IPhone and a pair of earphones, but I didn't want to get distracted and cause an accident, I was already spending a good sum of money at college, I didn't need tickets and hospital bills to go on top of all the money I spent already, plus using my playlist didn't give me the same satisfaction as finding a good song on the radio did. So here I was driving with my only source of entertainment being the local news and my playlist as a last resort.
The sky was cloudy, but not enough that it was just a grey mass of space like a true cloudy day, but you could see cracks of sunlight here and there through the clouds, with the occasional hole of sunlight that shines through. I quickly checked my phone, and thankfully I only had about 20 minutes left of my drive.
My name is Seth, Seth Philips, I'm 18 years old and about 5ft 8, I'm not too tall but not a manlet. I also have an average build, not too thin nor thick, just right. I have short black hair and had dark brown eyes like my dad. I was wearing a plain white T-Shirt with a black pair of pants, on my passenger seat was my sweat shirt for when I actually left my car. I graduated high school a few months before and got settled into my dorm around August 24th. Although I was currently undeclared, I had some ideas on what I could major in, but I wasn't 100% sure about any of them yet.
Right now I was on my way back to my hometown, my college was two hours away from home, which made visiting convenient and easy. The reason for my trip was because my college had to shut down temporarily due to one of the students testing positive for Corona, they just mentioned it on the news too. For whatever reason Greensville just wasn't ready for COVID despite the pandemic being around for a few months now, so a handful of students such as myself decided to pack our bags and head home until they opened back up. Classes would be virtual until then so none of us would be missing anything. And yes, me and the others all got tested before we left, we were all negative.
As for my job, I didn't have any, because it wasn't already hard enough finding one during the pandemic, luckily my parents were generous enough to send me off with a small bit of allowance since my gramps passed away a year ago, heart attack in his sleep. Aside from that I also had some money saved in the bank from my days working at Walmart, as soul draining as it was I saved up a decent sum that would last three months without mommy and daddy's monthly donation. So I had theses going until I got a proper job at another retail store probably.
A sign passed my window as I drove, reading:
Welcome to BuckWood, Founded in 1845.
Population: 30,000.
Ah BuckWood, as generic as the name sounded, it was still home to me. Life in this small town in Maine was nice, even though we were in Maine, and constantly targeted by Stephen King's monsters and ghosts, life was good.
Soon enough the town came into view, the first building to my left was some convenience store, already the parking lot was packed, the building was filled with middle aged office workers and 23 year old interns frantically buying coffee for their higher ups, and a few teenage vape fiends too probably.
The second building I saw to my right was a car dealership, and after that I reached the town itself. By now I was five minutes from home, so I stopped in the middle of town and went to the local Starbucks.
Once inside I ordered a small coffee and took a seat on the sofa seat and waited for my order, it wasn't as packed as I thought it would be today, but then I remembered we were still in a pandemic, but less people meant my drink would be ready sooner than usual so no reason to complain.
As I sat, my phone vibrated in my pocket, pulling it out I saw that I got a text just then from my roommate Martin, who was also my best friend since kindergarten.
Martin: Hey, you home yet?
Almost, what about you?
Martin: Just about there.
Cool, what's your workload like?
Martin: I'll be on my laptop for a while, because what better time for my professors to dump all the hard stuff on us then now, right? I've got like five worksheets to do, front and back, and that Thesis due in November.
And here I am with only an essay to write, hell I'm almost done it.
Martin: Go to hell Seth.
I'll save you a spot M.
The barista placed my cup on the desk and called my name. I paused my exchange with Greg to grab my cup and sit back down, when I did he had already sent another message.
Martin: By the way, have you told your parents about that "thing" yet.
"Thing?...oh right that."
Not yet.
Martin: When will you? Most people wouldn't wait to talk about big stuff like that.
I will when they're ready, if I present it wrong they'll flip out. I've got it all planned out, I just have to wait for the right time.
Martin: Do you at least have an idea when you'll break the news to them?
Maybe by the end of the week, besides, it's not like it's all set in stone yet, hell, I might not even do it Martin.
Martin: Alright I get it, just looking out for you, what friend would I be if I didn't?
A normal one
Martin: Whatever, I've got some math to do and a thesis to start, I'll probably call tomorrow or something.
Aight, see ya.
I pocketed my phone and began my cup, as usual it was strong as hell, better than it being weak. Who'd want to drink coffee that's practically water after all?
Once I finished my cup I tossed it in the trash bin and left for my car again.
As I buckled up I thought back to me and Martin's conversation.
This "thing" that was mentioned wasn't something I wanted to take lightly, my parents would probably lose their shit if they knew I even put thought into it. Basically, it was that I-
Brrrrrrrrr, Brrrrrrrrr, Brrrrrrrrrrrr
My thoughts were interrupted by my phone vibrating yet again, this time my dad was calling. I retrieved my phone and accepted the call.
"Hey dad."
"Hey Seth, are you almost here?"
"I'm at Starbucks now, I'll be home in a few minutes."
"Good to hear, was your drive okay?"
"Other than the lack of good music, it was fine."
"Well good, anywho, we'll see you soon, love you."
"Love you to pops."
The call ended and after pocketing my phone again I put the keys in and started the car back up.
I didn't think much would happen today really, just go home, relax, finish up the essay, catch up with Mark, and that would be it.
But if you hadn't guessed it already, things didn't go as planned.
A few hours later.
7:50 PM
I groaned in pain as I laid in the wreckage of my car.
Glass was everywhere, some of the tiny shards from the remnants of my windshield had embedded themselves into my left arm, at worst they'd leave only a bunch of small cuts. Nothing compared to the damage the rest of my body sustained.
I felt a sharp, searing pain in my legs that hurt like hell, my head throbbed and I felt blood run down my sideburn, my chest and a good portion of my torso stung as I breathed. All in all, very few of my body parts came out unscathed.
You must be wondering what happened that led me to my current situation? Well let me catch you up then. So about 25 minutes ago I left to go on a drive to blow off some steam, and me being the big brain that I am, I didn't pay enough attention to the weather or my parents warnings as I stormed out earlier. The rain was worse than I thought and by the time I was almost out of town, it was pouring. Even with my headlights up I could barely see more than a foot ahead of my headlights. As I drove a dear ran out onto the road in front of me and left me little time to swerve out of the way, the deer got away just fine if your wondering, but I lost control of my car, and low and behold, a black pickup truck smashed right into my car as I skidded side to side. The blow was enough to knock it to the side of the road and land upside down. My car wasn't big or wide like an SUV, think Honda Civic small. Do you take the already slippery road plus a small car, plus a big pickup truck, and you get a bad accident. As you can imagine, I took a beating in the crash, it was especially bad since when the truck hit me, my car was swerved in a way that left the driver side completely vulnerable to the crash.
I felt around me for my seat buckle as my vision slowly unblurred. I clicked it and almost fell out of my seat. I carefully crawled my way out of a smashed window and exposed myself to the elements. Unfortunately for me, I didn't have my phone in my pocket at the time and when I was hit, my phone went flying and vanished, probably smashed into a billion pieces. So now I couldn't even call 911 or any kind of help period. My only option was to try and make my way back to town myself or hitch a ride with someone passing by.
As I tried to stand and put my right leg down, the searing pain in that leg hurt a little more, but it was bearable enough to limp, but the problems came when I tried to put my left leg down. I screamed as it touched the road and nearly fell over, this put more pressure and pain in my right leg and forced me back down onto the ground. Just my luck, my legs were probably broken, my left leg probably shattered in the crash if the pain meant anything.
So I had no other choice but to crawl. Although it would take forever to reach town, that was my only option left. I couldn't wait at the crash since I could've had internal wounds, and those could even be worse than external wounds. I heard once that internal bleeding could kill someone within hours if left untreated, so I started to crawl for my life.
Despite the fact that my car was so horribly fucked, it didn't go up in flames, intact I could still hear Breaking Benjamin's "Dance with the devil" playing on the radio, my favorite song too. It continued to play as I crawled along the wet, cold road.
After roughly 15 minutes of crawling, I passed another turn and found myself on "Hicker's St". After the turn you make entering it, it's a long straight drive onto the next turn, after that I'd be at least 20 minutes from the convenience store. Plus I could also get a drink while I waited for the Ambulance to come.
To my left was a thick wall of leaves and trees, a big area of woods that you could hardly see into, especially tonight with the rain. Hunters often came there during open season for deer and some small game even. And to my right was an abandoned train station, me and my friends always thought it was haunted growing up, we even snuck in one night just to see what was there, it consisted of a small one floor building behind a line of old railroad tracks that hadn't been used since the 60s. Though rumor has it that the town was planning on renovating the tracks and station to be used again. Though when this project would begin was unclear. I did remember seeing a phone in the station, but chances are it didn't work, it was a rotary phone after all.
As I crawled my mind began to wander back to earlier before I left. Thinking about that made me more determined to get back alive, I didn't want my last conversation with my family to be a fight, especially with what it was about. The thought of my parents tearing themselves apart over my death and the possible slew of "If only we didn't do this"s or "If only we did that"s that would follow, and leaving behind Mark scared me.
I already began imagining it all, greeting my parents after waking up, apologizing for being a dumbass, get my life back together and just live.
As I was caught up in my thoughts, I tried sitting up and didn't notice the truck up ahead until it was too late and it's bright headlights almost blinded me.
I saw my life flash before my eyes quickly as my demise approached, I didn't even have time to scream before the truck slammed into me.
Then it all went dark, no light, no pearly gates, no anything. It was just darkness, like I'd gone to sleep.
This was my death.
Naturally this is all that should have happened, guy gets hit by car and dies, all because of a deer that decided to run in the middle of the road during the rain, that's all, nothing more, nothing less.
But this wasn't the end.
This was merely the beginning.
