Chapter 59 - What Remains of Scarif

Galen pulled out of hyperspace at the proper coordinates. He did not have a droid with him, but he could swear he did. This was not the massive military-industrial complex he expected to find. Below him was a lifeless rock. Surrounding the planet were a whole bunch of wrecked ships. Some of them were clearly of the rebel alliance.

"Was there a fight here?" he asked no one in particular. "If there was, who won?"

Clearly there were more rebel ships floating in space than Empire ones. 'But then that was an Empire stronghold down there,' he reminded himself.

"Would the rebellion really do this? Would they destroy a whole world to fight the Empire?" Galen wanted to deny the possibility, but the evidence was clearly staring right at him. "How, that would take massive firepower?"

"Wait, this isn't why you're here. Juno. You're here to rescue Juno. But wait… Am I too late? If she was in this fight." He winced. "Luke was insistent I find her. He said she was out of fuel, not that she'd been in a fight. If my engines had to shut down due to lack of fuel, I'd look like another hunk of floating junk too. I just need to find one without battle damage." Galen said to himself.

Galen started his ship's scanners working on the debris. An hour later, he still hadn't found a single intact ship matching the Rogue Shadow's specifications, and he was starting to lose hope. Then he imagined coming home and having to face Luke, and possibly Leia too. Neither would take the news well. He sighed, then he shut down his scanner. Using the Force to sense another wasn't easy when one was in space and the other was who knew where. And Galen was nowhere near as powerful as his Master. Anakin Skywalker could detect them easily from this distance, but Galen didn't know if it would even be worth trying. But then at this point, he didn't have any other options.

As he closed his eyes, he breathed in, 'Two, three, four,' and out. Then he breathed in again, letting in the Force with the air. What he found almost left him breathless. So much death! The Force still stunk of it. 'Try again,' he told himself. 'Two, three, four,' he inhaled again. A whisper in the Force felt like life, and he followed it. It led him out of the debris field, and over to the now wrecked and lifeless shield gate. 'There!' The ship had received some alterations since he last saw it, and his ship's computer wouldn't be able to recognize it anymore, but his eyes did. It was the Rogue Shadow, and she was intact!

"Yahoo!" He hooted as he turned his sensors back on. The Rogue Shadow, her engines were shut down and only the most basic systems were operational. There was no point in using the comm, communications was not one of the basic systems. Galen steered his ship closer to her, and it became clear he wouldn't be able to board her easily. The ship's bay was closed, and all of her hatches were sealed. If he had a droid, he could send it over and have it open propper hatches, or even forcibly pull open the bay doors, but alas he had no droids.

There was only one option then… He went to the back of his ship and pulled out the EVA-suit he kept for emergencies. Putting it on, he climbed over to the door. He'd left his ship hovering only a hair's breadth away from the Rogue Shadow. He opened his ship's door to the vacuum of outer space. This was a risk, more than he ever thought he'd need to risk when he left Tatooine. "You wanted to be the hero," He chided himself.

"Alright, let's go." Galen pulled out a hook and threw it onto the other ship. It didn't catch and floated away. He tried again and again. On his third try the hook caught onto one of the external garner rods and he used it to swing over to the Rogue Shadow. He climbed up her until he reached an exterior hatch. This was the risky part. If any of her core defenses were latent but still active... He could only hope she'd be able to recognize him in time. Galen took a moment to send a peaceful wave of Force Energy onto the ship below him. It wouldn't make a difference. Juno was not Force sensitive, and the Rogue Shadow was a ship. But it still made him feel better so after he did that, he began pulling the hatch open.

Once the hatch opened he crawled into the chamber and shut it again. Galen took a deep breath in his suit. "Here's where we find out if you remember me, old girl. Remember who lined up all of your T-sensor nodes? It was these hands." Galen pulled off one of the control panel's inside. The chamber he was in was still in a vacuum. To get out to manually open the bay doors, so he could fly his ship in, he'd have to change this. But without power to these systems, he'd have to override a few safeties.

Zap! An unexpected current jumped through the glove when he touched the wires. The door opened as he fell backwards into unconsciousness.

"Power Levels are at four percent. They are estimated to last another eight hours. We could salvage another four by turning off life support in the crew quarters, or shutting down my main data hub." Rogue Shadow gave her Captain the data report.

"No. Our crew size is too large to all fit in here. And your main data hub is where the death star plans are located. No one's shutting it down." Juno ordered.

"Then what is your plan, Captain?" Rogue asked.

"I'll think of something. I've got eight hours. That's plenty of time to form a plan." Juno grabbed her glowrod. The main lights in the ship were one of the first things they shut off. "I'll be checking on the crew."

"Aah." Rogue startled. "I felt something. In the aft section, near my rear maintenance hatch. It could be nothing, but…"

"I'll check on it," Juno said, and she turned to leave.

"Captain, what is it?" Billy, Juno's first mate, asked.

"Rogue. She sensed something in the aft section. I'm going to go check it out. It could be nothing, but then…" Juno started.

"It could be pirates trying to salvage this dump." Billy finished.

"Force, I hope not. That's the last thing we need to deal with."

"Let me grab a blaster, and I'll come along with you." Billy offered.

Two blasters, two glowrods, and two nervous rebels went searching for pirates. That sounds like the beginning of a Joke, but neither Juno nor Billy were feeling humored as they krept down the hall. If there was someone to find, it would be better if they found it, rather than the other way around. The two searched each compartment as they went, and eventually they were in the aftmost section of the ship. There was one more compartment at the very end, the one with the hatch in it.

Billy stood on one side of the door, holding her blaster up. Juno stood on the other side. She shined her glowrod into the room and found nothing.

"Empty. False alarm?" Billy guessed.

Juno shrugged. "She did say it could be nothing."

Billy put his weapon back on his belt, and turned to leave.

Juno was about to follow him, when she thought she heard something in the dark compartment. She pulled out her glowrod again and shined it all around looking for something, anything out of place.

"Billy, wait." Juno ordered when she saw it. The door to the hatch compartment was open. It was usually kept closed, except for when repairs were needed outside the ship.

Juno waved at Billy. Then she stepped into the room. She sidestepped over to the hatch compartment, and that's where she saw it. On the floor there was a body, lying motionless. He or she was wearing an EVA-suit with a thick dark mask.

"Billy, in here. Quick!" Juno summoned.

"What are we going to do with him?" Billy asked while carrying the unconscious intruder.

"I don't know?" Juno answered.

"Do we let him wake up?" Billy went on.

"What? Of course. You're not suggesting…"

"I'm suggesting that if he is a Pirate, he's got a ship out there with fuel and coming over alone like this, there probably isn't a large crew waiting for him," Billy hinted.

"So you're suggesting we kill him, and possibly his crew. Go out there with our EVA-suits and steal their ship's fuel?"

"It's only what they would do to us… Pirates and all."

Juno glared at him. "You haven't known many pirates. Have you? No. We will bring him back to my compartment where he will recover and then we'll see."

Billy carried the unconscious man into the Captain's quarters and placed him onto the sofa.

"Thank you, you can leave now," Juno ordered.

Billy eyed the body and his Captain. "Alright, just remember to keep this with you." He picked up a Blaster from the table where Juno had set it down upon entering the quarters.

Juno rolled her eyes and took the Blaster. When her first mate was out the door, she put it on her belt, and walked up to her unconscious roommate "Let's get that helmet off you and see what's underneath. Shall we?"

He groaned as she pulled the mask off.

"Ha! It's a good thing I didn't let Billy shoot you," Juno joked when she recognized the boy, now man, under the mask. "Galen Marek, Jedi."

Galen groaned again as he started to rouse.

"Wakey wakey, pretty boy." Juno teased.

"Errrnnn Ogh," Galen shook his head.

"What are you doing all the way out here?" Juno asked.

"Luke sent me. Leia gave him a message. Said you were in trouble. Out of fuel."

"That we are."

Galen sat up and brushed his hair back with his hands. "She shocked me." He sounded astonished.

"Rogue?" Juno inquired.

The voice of the ship answered her. "One of my backup systems. I would never intentionally harm one of my re-creators."

"See. That make you feel better?" Juno teased.

Galen nodded as he stood up.

"Come on now. I've got a crew itching to use their EVA-suits and you have a ship out there with a full tank." Juno put her hand on his back to lead him.

"Two full tanks. I filled up a spare tank and put it in the hold," Galen answered.

"Great!"

Galen stood on the Rogue Shadow's bridge as her systems came back to full power. Juno's crew had proved as skilled as promised, and Galen's ship was now parked in Rogue's bay.

"Good, there we are. Billy, run a scan to test our sensors," Juno ordered.

Rogue's main screen began to display images and data of the planet Scarif.

"Not a pretty sight to wake up to, But everything looks good. Everything is identical to when we went down." Billy interpreted.

"What did happen to Scarif?" Galen asked.

The crew became silent. "We don't know. She was like this when we dropped out of hyperspace," Juno explained.

"If I may, Captain. I have been processing this while the systems were down, and I have a theory," The ship's voice spoke up.

"Go ahead, Rogue," Juno urged.

"A single reactor blast from the Empire's superweapon labeled DS-1, would have dissipated it's planetary shield, burning part of the planet's surface, and boiled it's oceans. The readings of the planet's surface are consistent with this."

"DS-1, that's the weapon…" Juno trailed off, her voice becoming deep and gravelly.

"The one in the plans sent by Private Skywalker, yes." Rogue confirmed.

"One weapon did all this!" Galen opened his eyes wide in panic.

"At full power, the Death Star could destroy worlds," Rogue corrected.

"We need to get those plans to the Rebellion. Fast!" Juno stated.

"I'm not going to argue that. Let's go!" Galen urged.

"Plugging in the coordinates for Yavin Four," Billy said.

"Engage when ready," Juno ordered.

"Engage!" Rogue said, and the view out her window became blurred with the blues of hyperspace travel.

Galen prayed that Luke would be successful in his attempt to rescue Leia, and he hoped he'd see them again soon.

Hello,I was debating just having them run across Galen when they got to Yavin IV and having him summarizing his trip in a couple lines, after all how exciting could finding them and giving another ship a jumpstart be, but decided to try writing it all out anyways. And I don't regret a thing. In case anyone is unclear, Scarif is the world in Rogue One. It's where the Death Star was built and it was destroyed by the Death Star, but apparently not fully. The details I have here I got from Wookieepedia. I don't really understand all that myself.Next week they'll all meet up together on Yavin IV. Alderaan still hasn't been destroyed, and they'll need to figure out what to do about the death star.
