The first thing Morgan heard when she woke up was shouting. It was dark, and they were sailing into the harbor. The Vikings who had flown over were already there. Toothless was awake, too. He yawned. Well, it looks like my head is still attached to my neck.
"Yeah, I don't think there's going to be much of a problem with that kind of stuff."
Your constant optimism is sickening.
"Eh, someone has to balance out your grumpy pessimism."
As soon as they tied the mooring ropes Stoick got off and headed up the ramps with Toothless and Morgan following. The village elder was already waiting at Hiccup's house, and no one objected to Toothless coming in. The Night Fury eyed the stairs, which Stoick and the elder had already gone up. What's up there?
Morgan shrugged. "Hiccup's room. I don't think you'll fit in there, and they do have to take care of his leg, so we'd probably better wait down here."
Figures. Toothless moved over to the cold fire pit. Do me a favor and get this stupid saddle off.
"I'll try, but no guarantees." Morgan started working at getting the buckles undone. It wasn't as hard as she had expected, and a couple of the straps broke when she pulled at them. "Yeesh, he's going to need a whole new saddle. This one's had."
You were expecting? Toothless settled on the floor. Wake me up when something happens.
Morgan curled up next to him and went to sleep. The next morning she had just barely woken up when Stoick came down. "You, come with me," he said.
"Sure." Morgan climbed up onto his shoulder, nearly sending him through the ceiling. "Where are we going?"
"You're going to tell me what you are and what's been happening."
"Okay."
Toothless woke up. And what's going on?
"Going to go get interrogated and probably try to teach these guys how to say Pachirisu while I'm at it," Morgan said. "Don't break anything and don't wake Hiccup up. He needs plenty of rest."
Toothless snorted, but curled up close to the stairs.
Stoick went outside. Astrid was just coming up the hill. "Hiccup?" she said.
"He'll be fine after some rest," Stoick said. "Come with me."
They went to the great hall or whatever. A good number of Vikings were already there. Stoick sat at one of the tables, and everyone gathered around him. Morgan hopped off onto the table. "Okay, first, I'm a Pachirisu. Not a squirrel. I come from really far away and I don't know how I got here."
People started yelling questions. Morgan answered what she could and let Astrid answer a bunch as well. When the interrogation finally ended Gobber dragged her to the smithy to help make a prosthetic for Hiccup and a new tail fin for Toothless.
"No wonder I kept running out of things," Gobber muttered as he worked.
When he finally let Morgan go she went to Hiccup's house to find Hiccup in a bed at the back of the main room, with Toothless curled up next to him.
"Tried to get into his room?" Morgan said as she hopped up onto the bed post.
Toothless huffed. I almost died saving him. I want to keep an eye on him.
"And it's totally not because you're worried sick about him."
The Night Fury huffed again, but didn't say anything.
"He'll pull through. He's tougher than people give him credit for."
Maybe.
Morgan hopped down and patted his foot before curling up next to Hiccup and going to sleep.
The next morning Gobber stopped by long enough to make sure the prosthetic was the right size and strapped it on Hiccup before leaving. Toothless was getting antsy, but didn't leave Hiccup's side. Hiccup woke up a few hours later.
"Morning," Morgan said as he opened his eyes.
"Morning." He sat up and rubbed his eyes, then looked around. "I'm in my house." He saw Toothless, now smiling. "You're in my house. Does my dad know you're here?"
Toothless licked his face and started moving around a bit.
"Yeah, your dad knows he's here," Morgan said. "He's the reason you're down here instead of in your room."
Hiccup sighed, started to get up, then stopped and looked under the blanket. His face fell.
"I'm sorry," Morgan said softly. "We went as fast as we could, but…"
Hiccup swung his legs over the edge of the bed. Toothless sniffed the prosthetic, then gave Hiccup a sympathetic look. Hiccup took a deep breath, then stood.
Morgan bit her lip. "Um, do you really think you should be up just yet?"
"I'm-" Hiccup took a step and stumbled. Toothless caught him, and after a moment Hiccup managed to get his balance back. He took a couple of deep breaths and tried to walk again. Toothless moved with him, giving him something to lean on as he headed for the door. Hiccup opened it, came face to face with a Monstrous Nightmare, and slammed it shut again. "Stay here," he said to Toothless before opening the door again.
Morgan could hear voices and wings. Slowly, Hiccup went outside, staring in amazement at the dragons that now perched everywhere. Stoick came up, but Morgan didn't hear what he said. A heavy feeling was growing in her gut. She was going to be leaving soon.
Hiccup and Stoick went down the steps. Morgan moved next to Toothless. "Looks pretty good, all things considering."
I'm surprised this many wanted to stay.
"Hey, free food, a safe place to sleep, and people to take care of you. Doesn't sound like a bad deal, really."
What's wrong?
Morgan hesitated. "I think I'm going to end up leaving soon. So take care of Hiccup for me, okay?"
That's what I planned on doing. Toothless was quiet for a moment. I suppose I should thank you for keeping him alive this long. And helping out.
"Glad to help. Thanks for not killing me and him."
Down below, Gobber was just handing Hiccup the new flying gear. Morgan nodded towards him. "Give them one last heart attack for me, okay?"
Of course. Take care. Toothless bounded down the hill.
The feeling was getting stronger. Morgan went outside. There was a black scale on the ground. She picked it up and smiled. Small lights started appearing around her. Hiccup looked back just in time to see her wave before the lights enveloped her.
Morgan once again found herself staring at the screen of her DS. She sighed, saved, and turned it off. When she got up to turn off the movie something fell off her lap. She picked it up. A round, black scale. She smiled and tucked it in her pocket before going out.
And that's the end. Thanks for reading!
