Prologue: The End and the Beginning
Tensions were running high as the combined student bodies of Durmstrang, Beauxbatons and Hogwarts gathered in the Great Hall, each and every one of them waiting with bated breath to see whose names were going to emerge from the Goblet of Fire and be crowned Champion of their respective school for the duration of the Triwizard Tournament.
At the front of the hall, Albus Dumbledore tried to maintain a straight face and remain strictly professional as the benevolent host as he addressed the students gathered before him. Though, of course, there was only one student he was interested in and, after all his hard work, all the trouble the little monster had caused and all the near-misses that should have ended in Albus Dumbledore's favour, tonight, this very night, was the night that his victory would be assured.
Then everyone would remember who the greatest sorcerer was.
As he began his speech, announcing that the time had come, Dumbledore couldn't resist looking in the direction of his quarry.
There, among the green-clad Slytherins, sat with the same air of cocky, confident defiance he had shown since the first day Dumbledore had met him, Harry James Potter seemed to be watching and waiting with a smug, knowing smile on his face.
Of course, he couldn't know what was about to happen.
Albus had been very careful, after all.
Nobody knew what was about to happen.
No-one but him.
'Smile while you can, Harry,' thought Dumbledore, turning to the Goblet as he mused, 'Soon, you'll understand your rightful place in the world and then you'll accept that you have to die for the Greater Good.'
As he triggered the magic that selected the first Champion, Dumbledore saw the flames rear up, spitting out the first name.
"The Champion for Durmstrang is…VIKTOR KRUM!"
As cheers filled the Great Hall, Dumbledore looked back to Harry Potter.
Only to see that same smugness watching him, even as the second name was spat out of the Goblet.
"The Champion for Beauxbatons is FLEUR DELACOUR!"
Two down, one to go.
And yet, Harry still looked smug; even as the Goblet of Fire spat out the third name, Dumbledore even saw Harry gesture, encouraging the Headmaster to go on with his speech and revelations, though, at the same time, Albus thought he saw the boy's lips move, forming words of a different meaning altogether.
"Give it your best shot…"
"The Hogwarts Champion…CEDRIC DIGGORY!"
Now was the time.
Dumbledore only had to wait a couple of minutes, during which he pretended to put on a display of pride and professionalism as he declared the trophy for the victor, the Triwizard Cup.
Of course, in the end, there would be only one winner.
And it wasn't some arrogant little Tom Riddle wannabe who thought he could defy a destiny written for him by Albus Dumbledore's hand.
As the applause died down, Dumbledore really tried, perhaps harder than he'd ever tried before, to maintain a composure of confusion and disbelief when he saw the Goblet of Fire light up for a fourth time, creating a wave of intense blue fire that scared many different people while others shared in the confusion of what was going on, especially when the flames in the Goblet actually rose up with an almighty ROAR, like the bellowing cry of a dragon that had been denied its prey before, with an almost-comical spitting sound, the Goblet released something that many others believed to be impossible, if not downright-inexplainable.
A fourth piece of parchment.
Catching the parchment with a weary – as far as any of his sheep were concerned – grip and a look of apparent confusion, Dumbledore looked to the name on the paper.
However, in his excitement for his plan coming to fruition, he actually called out the name written there louder than he'd intended.
"HARRY POTTER?"
"Well, fuck-a-duck," said Harry, earning several gasps from the students as they all turned to the green-clad fourth year, who didn't even seem fazed by the revelation that he was the Fourth Champion. Instead, he just rose from his seat, casual as you like, before he walked down to the floor and started to walk between the rows of students.
"He's a cheat!" cried Hermione Granger.
"He's not even seventeen years old yet!" exclaimed Ron Weasley, though not before the redhead added, "But what else can you expect from a slimy Slytherin? He probably thinks…"
Whatever it was that the redhead thought Harry was thinking was cut off, however, when the Goblet's flames reignited, accompanied by a wave of all-encompassing Dark Magic that swept through the Great Hall, extinguishing each one of the torches on the walls while the enchanted ceiling suddenly turned darker than it had ever been in recorded history.
As an ear-piercing boom of thunder filled the air, accompanied by a flash of blue lightning that streaked across the ceiling like a laser show, the only voice that spoke out next was Harry's, though not before he stopped in front of an alarmed Albus Dumbledore, who watched with a mixture of fear and dread, as well as horror and disbelief as the lightning was accompanied by flashes of magical light that, had anyone looked close enough, they would have identified as a skull-face, leering at the aged headmaster.
Harry, however, drew Dumbledore's attention to him with his next words.
"I told you, all those years ago, Albus Dumbledore; you really should have learned to let this delusion of yours go."
Before Dumbledore could begin to make any sort of response, however, the old man's voice was cut off by another clap of thunder accompanied by a bone-jarring CRACK, which seemed to come from the Goblet itself.
When Dumbledore turned to the Goblet, his eyes widened in horror when he saw the blue fire within the Goblet rise up before, to the alarm and disbelief of the student bodies of the three schools, the flames seemed to take shape. First, a body grew out of the fire, accompanied by arms, legs, hands, feet and, finally, a head, which seemed to be topped by a mohawk-like hairstyle that was the same colour as the Goblet's flames as well as cold, darkest-blue eyes that seemed to resemble the eternal darkness of the darkest night's sky.
As for the rest of the strange body, it was covered by a long, black duster that could have been described as gothic in design, especially with the ghostly, demonic visage on the back, accompanied by the words SOUL STEALER stitched across the top in bright-blue lettering. Under the duster, the man wore skin-hugging black clothes, as well as leather wrist guards topped by ghostly-looking grey spikes. Thick, black boots covered his feet while, as the man stepped out of the fire that had conjured him, he sighed deeply, exhaling two wisps of blue smoke from his nostrils like a dragon breathing flame through its nose.
"No!" gasped Dumbledore, all new horror settling into his gut as he asked, "You…you can't…not you…we…we had a deal!"
"A deal that expired when the student became an elder," said the man, his voice cold, but filled with the same air of mocking amusement that Harry himself had shown, while the man also looked apologetic as he shrugged, "Should have read the fine print, Albus…I mean, we did warn you."
While Dumbledore was left floundering, the man stepped past the Headmaster before, stopping in front of Harry, who seemed to be a head shorter than this newcomer, the blue-haired man sighed deeply as he stared deep into Harry's own emerald-green eyes with a hint of curiosity and dark superiority that was noticed by everyone present, many of whom seemed to wonder what, if anything, the so-called Traitor-Who-Lived was going to do against a being of such power.
So, it's a pretty safe bet that one could only imagine how shocked they were to see Harry smile at the man.
Though not as shocked as they were with his next words;
"Hi Dad…thanks for making it to my little impromptu coming-of-age party."
So, the opening chapter to this bizarre adventure and, I know, you have questions: well, let's see: first question: why is Harry in Slytherin and what's with Dumbledore's apparent-desperation to see him fall?
(Technically that's two questions, but you get the point…)
Third question: who is this man and why is Harry calling him Dad?
Well, Keep Reading to Find Out
Next Chapter: Who is the man with the blue hair? Why is Harry calling him Dad? How does Dumbledore know about them and what's this deal they made together? To find out the answers, we have to go back in time…to a certain dark night in Godric's Hollow and then to a certain fated day ten years later…
