Chapter One: The Boy and Girl Who Lived
The night of Halloween was a peculiar night for the Potter family of four. They've been in hiding for almost two years now because of the danger that would be brought upon their twins by Voldemort and all of his followers. Lily and James loved their two children with all their hearts and would do anything to make sure they were safe.
That night, Lily was in the downstairs loo giving Hallie a bath while her husband held a slightly wet but clean Harry in his arms. "Lily, dear, I do believe Hallie has had quite enough of this bath." James said with a laugh as his youngest and only daughter squirmed to get away from her mum.
"Honestly James, you could help." Lily huffed but conjured Hallie's towel.
James laughed again before reminding his wife, "I still have Harry, love." Lily rolled her eyes before casting a drying spell on their youngest child. Once Hallie was dry, Lily put on her onesie that was very similar to Harry's. Both children had on onesies that said 'Future Gryffindor' but Harry's was scarlet with gold lettering whereas Hallie's was gold with scarlet lettering.
"James, love, you've taken that potion tonight?" Lily asked as they walk out of the loo.
James looked over at his wife before answering her," Of course I did, Lily. Just because we are not sure if this will work, doesn't mean I will not at least try it."
They were about to walk up the stairs when they heard their silent alarm go off. "No!" Lily screamed but James was already going into action.
"Lily, love, take the children. Try to apparate to Sirius' house or even Hogsmeade, so you can get to Hogwarts." James told her as he handed Harry over. "I'll stay here, so I can give you a fighting chance. I'm going to send Sirius our emergency letter, so he knows that you three are coming." He called over his familiar, Marella. Marella has been his familiar since he was eleven when his parents gave the owl to him as his birthday present.
Lily was crying and shaking her head. "I can't leave you, James!"
"You're going to have to, love; for the children and for you. They need one of us still alive and you're the best bet for them. I love you." He kisses her softly before kissing the twins' foreheads.
Lily nods and says, "I love you too. James, please try to come back to us." With that said, she runs up the stairs to the twin's bedroom. Once the door is shut, she holds her children tightly before thinking about Sirius' home. When that doesn't work, she thinks of Hogsmeade but nothing happens. She places both of the twins in Harry's crib before she starts to pace until she remembers about the emergency portkeys. They had two for the same place encase this ever happened. Lily had just picked up the old Hogwarts textbook when she heard a scream. She dropped the book and turned towards the door. "James," she cried out in a whisper. She heard a strange yell and a growl before nothing else was there. "No! Isa!" At that moment, Lily knew that her cat, her familiar, was dead.
She knew she couldn't let their sacrifice be in vain, so she picked up the emergency portkey and was about to turn back towards the babies when the door blew open. Lily turns back to the door and saw Lord Voldemort walk in. "Please don't, not my babies."
"I'll let you live if you give up your children. I've offered you and your husband a chance to join me and my followers but you've always said no. This will be your last chance, Lily Potter." Lily shook her head no and Voldemort raised his wand before saying, "Avada Kedavra." The last thing Harry and Hallie will ever hear from their mum was a terrible scream. The evil Lord Voldemort turns towards the two one year olds and raised his wand at young Harry before saying the same spell but instead of killing the boy something else happened. Voldemort screamed before bursting into black smoke. Hallie looked over at her unconscious brother but heard a horrible scream and a flash of green light before falling unconscious herself. The two babies come to a few moments later to a shattered room.
For hours, the two babies sat in their shattered bedroom, crying for their mother who would never be able to wake up again. The first person to find them was an old friend of their parents, Rubeus Hagrid. He was a giant of a man (since he was actually half-giant) with a face full of hair. As soon as he saw Lily, he started to cry. Still crying he makes his way over to the crib and gasps. Harry and Hallie were still crying for their mother when they just stop to look up at Hagrid. Both babies had a lightning bolt scar on their foreheads.
Hagrid sighed before walking over towards the two babies. He was about to pick them up when he heard movement from behind him. Jumping around, he points his umbrella at Sirius Black, the twins' godfather. "'Ello Sirius, have yeh heard?"
"About what happened to Lily and James?" Sirius sighed sadly and looked over to his godchildren. "I just can't believe that they are no longer here. They won't be able to watch their kids grow up or give them any more brothers and sisters." Sirius walks over towards his goddaughter and picks her up. "She looks just like her mum but with James' eyes." He looks over at Harry before saying, "Whereas Harry looks just like his father but with Lily's eyes." His fiancé walks in right after he says that to Hagrid. "Hello love. Where is Reid?"
Melanie Bennett walks over and pulls Harry into her arms as she cries. "Reid is with my parents. I needed to be here just as much as you did." Sirius nods and pulls her into his arms.
"When can we take them home?" Sirius asked Hagrid.
Hagrid starts to look anywhere but the young couple. "Professor Dumbledore has decided the bes' place fer them ter be is with their on'y family."
"The Dursleys are not the best people for these children to be with!" Sirius screamed. "They belong with their godparents! That's what Lily and James wanted! We are their only family! Melanie, Remus, and me are the only people that are still alive to love these two sweet babies. I thought Peter was one as well, but he isn't here. Remus at least couldn't be because of what his schedule is at the moment. I know that they would love Reid like a little brother and he would love them as well! Bloody hell! They already do love each other!"
"Professor Dumbledore says he can put a certain charm on the house ter protect them. Also, none of You-Know-Who supporters will think ter look there. Yeh two would be the firs' people they would think o'." Hagrid says before the young couple sighs into the twins' hair.
Melanie kisses Harry's scar before agreeing. "Sirius, he's correct. All of those Death Eaters will be after these two babies and if we can protect them by allowing Lily's sister to take them in than that's what we have to do." Sirius nods before they start to bundle up the babies up for their trip.
The group walks out of the destroyed house and make their way to Sirius' bike. "Hagrid, take my bike. You can just return it tomorrow" Sirius transfigured the motorcycle into a bigger version of itself.
Melanie conjures a sidecar before she and Sirius place the twins in it. She casts a warming and a safety charm before asking, "Hagrid, do you mind asking Professor Dumbledore if we can sometimes come and see the children?" Hagrid nods before getting on the enlarged motorcycle. The couple watches the bike fly away before hugging one another. "I do hope that Professor Dumbledore allows us to come and see the twins. It's what James and Lily would have wanted." Sirius nods before looking back at the house.
"Melanie, love, go back to Reid. He needs you right now. I need to finish up here before I can head home." Sirius tells her before kissing her softly and heading back towards the house.
She is about to apparate home when she says, "Sirius, please hurry home. Your son also needs you. I love you." He nods and tells her he loves her too. Sirius looks back at the house and apparates away.
November 1st seemed like any other normal day for the Dursley family of four. The head of the household, Vernon Dursley, woke up to get ready for his job at Grunnings. He was the director there and over saw many of the orders for the drills coming in and out of the company. He was a very big man in comparison to his wife, Petunia. She was thin with a long neck and she had blonde hair that sat on top of her head. They had a set of twins, a boy and girl named Dudley and Primrose, who were one year old and in their parents' eyes' the finest babies anyone has ever seen. Once Vernon was dressed for work, he walked down the stairs to see his wife struggling to get their son into his high chair. Primrose was already sitting quietly with massed green peas in her hand. She was the easy baby out of the two.
They seemed like the perfect family, but no family is perfect and every family had a deep, dark secret they were desperate to hide. Their secret of course went by the name of Potter, and there were actually four of them. The way the Potters were related to them was in the form of Lily Potter being Petunia's little sister. When Lily was eleven she left for a special school and there she met and married a freak named James. Once they were married they ended up having two children, twins to be exact, and they were just a month younger than the Dursleys' twins.
The Dursleys and the Potters didn't get along for the reason that Vernon and Petunia – who thought they were respected and proper in the eyes of society – believed the Potters to be freaks and lunatics. To think that magic actually existed would make anyone, who was sane, think that person was mental!
After Vernon finished his breakfast, he kissed both his wife and daughter on the lips before trying to do the same with Dudley, who was once again throwing another tantrum. Getting into his car, he didn't think that today was going to be any different until he saw a tabby cat reading the sign that said, Pivet Drive. That caused him to do a double take and he still saw that cat reading, no looking at their sign. Shaking his head, he continued driving towards work. He noticed many people, both young and old, in weird outfits and he grunted. If it were only the younger folks, he would have thought that it was a new type of fashion, but no! It was also men and woman his age or even older!
When he pulled into work and parked his car, he pushed all of the strange things that were happening around him to the back of his mind and started yelling at his co-workers who were below him in every single way. With his back always to his office's window, he never got to see the thousands of owls that were flying everywhere in the clear blue sky. By the time lunch had rolled around, he had decided to go grab some pastries from a shop near his building.
After he ordered his sandwich and pastries, Vernon walked out of the shop with a newspaper in one hand and his sack of food in the other. All of a sudden, a very old man in a violet cloak knocked into Vernon. "Do forgive me, dear muggle! But today is a very good day for everyone, especially for all of you muggles! A very good day!" Vernon was about to say something before the man moved to another group of men and women in colourful cloaks. They started whispering with excitement and sorrow lacing their voices. "Did you hear about what happened to the Potters?" The man in the violet cloak asked.
A woman in an aqua cloak cried out. "Yes! Those poor babies…" She starts to cry before saying, "What is going to happen to poor Harry and Hallie?"
"No one knows," said another man in an emerald cloak. "Some believe that the babies will go to Sirius Black but now with what happened to Peter Pettigrew and those twelve muggles, he will never be able to touch them. Others say that Albus Dumbledore will be putting the babies under the care of someone very unknown. Though I believe, the children's godmother will most likely take them in. For the life of me, I cannot remember her name."
The women in the aqua cloak said, "Their godmother was Sirius Black's fiancé, so I highly doubt they will be going to Melanie Bennett." The other two weirdly dress people nodded their heads.
Vernon rolled his eyes. These people of course weren't talking about the Potters related to him. He couldn't even remember his niece and nephew names. All he could remember was that they were common names. He continued walking back to his office and decided to push it to the back of his mind and if he remembered, he would ask Petunia. Once he was sitting back in his office chair, he continued to make phone calls and yell at his co-workers. That was what the rest of his day looked like; and when the clock rang a quarter to six, he packed up his bag and made his way home.
Pulling into the driveway of 4 Privet Drive, he saw the same tabby cat from this morning sitting on the brick wall by his house. Rolling his eyes, he glared at the cat before going inside to eat dinner with his family. Dinner passed as it normally did – with Petunia gossiping about the neighbours and trying to get Dudley and Primrose to eat their green peas.
Once dinner was over and done with, Vernon was sitting in front of the television set with the news on when his wife walked in with their tea. "Are the twins asleep?"
"Yes, clean and fast asleep! I don't understand why Primrose is so easy to put asleep while Dudley takes every bit of strength out of me." Petunia said as she handed him his teacup before sitting down on the love seat.
Vernon shook his head while he continued watching the news. The news broadcaster was talking about all of the strange things happening today. That once again brought the Potters to his mind. "Honey, have you heard from your sister lately?"
"No, not since the twins' birthday, when she sent them a gift. I had tried to do the same thing for their twins but I never heard back from them." Petunia answers his question with a lot of disdain in her voice.
Her husband looked up before saying, "Petunia, love, don't you remember that letter we had received from that crack-pot of a headmaster at that freak show school of theirs?"
"Oh, yes. It said that my sister and her husband thanked us for the gift but regretfully could not tell us in person because of some serious danger. Why do you ask, my love?" She asked her husband.
Back in the day, before Lily had ever received her letter to go to Hogwarts, school of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the two former Evans were the best of friends; but as soon as Lily left, the sister's relationship grew bitter. So, Vernon knew not to tell her what he had heard on the streets this morning. "No reason really… What are the twins' names again?"
"Harry and Hallie, such common names. I couldn't fathom why my sister would choose such common names for her children! Our Dudley and Primrose have much better names." Petunia says with a smile.
Vernon nodded his head to show that he agreed with her before they finished watching the news. Once the news was over, the couple got ready for bed. With the lights out and both of them lying in bed, Vernon once again thought about what he heard out on the streets. He grunts and rolls over before pushing the Potters to the back of his mind and falls into a restless sleep.
Around midnight a man in a jade cloak appeared on Privet Drive, causing the tabby cat to glare at him. The man looked around in his robes for a while before pulling out a silver cigarette lighter. He uses the cigarette lighter to put out the streetlights and makes his way towards the cat. "Hello Professor McGonagall," the old man says with a smile.
"Professor Dumbledore, how could you tell?" The women asked.
Albus Dumbledore rolled his eyes before answering, "Minerva, there were a lot of ways I could tell and I know why you are here."
"Albus, is what everyone saying true?" She asked and saw the frown on the old man's face. "Oh, no! Lily and James can't be dead! How did You-Know-Who find them? Albus, what will actually happen to the twins? I've heard so many different stories and I don't know if I want to believe what everyone has said."
Professor Dumbledore sighed before telling her the rundown of the story that he knew about. "Somehow Voldemort was able to get someone to betray Lily and James; and he went to their home and killed them. He tried to kill the twins but by some miracle, the spell turned on him when he casted the killing curse at Harry; and now he's gone and they are left without parents. Doesn't seem right, does it Minerva?"
"Not at all!" The two sat in silence before she asked, "What are you actually here for? These folks are muggles and from what I have seen today, dreadful muggles at that."
Albus sighed and looked up at the night's sky. "Minerva, Harry and Hallie are now famous… No child should know of their fame at such a young age and these muggles are their last living family members."
"Albus, you can't be serious! There are many people who would gladly take care of these children! They would also make sure to keep them out of the spotlight! Why couldn't their godparents take them? I know Sirius and Melanie would take them in a heartbeat." Minerva said in a shrill voice.
The older wizard sighed before saying, "Professor McGonagall, the only way I could put up wards around Harry and Hallie to protect them are blood wards; and since James was an only child and Lily's sister lives here, it's the only way. Sirius and Melanie have a child already and it would be for the best that they don't take the extra load."
Professor McGonagall looks at the headmaster before saying, "You're not telling me everything, Albus."
"I'll fill you in later but this is the best course of action for these babies." He stands up before looking around. "Now where is Hagrid?"
As soon as he said that, the two old friends and colleagues heard a loud rumbling sound up in the sky before a large motorcycle fell out of the sky. The man on the motorcycle was none other than Hagrid, keeper of the keys and grounds at Hogwarts. "'Ello Professor Dumbledore an' Professor McGonagall."
"Hello Hagrid, where did you get the motorcycle from?" Albus asked as he walked over.
The large man got off the bike, holding two bundles. "Sirius Black loaned it ter me. He an' Melanie showed up at the Potter's house right after I got there. I have the twins, they fell asleep on the way here." Hagrid handed the two sleeping babies over to Professor Dumbledore. Albus nodded his head before walking over to the Dursleys' front door. "Wait? Can I tell them goodbye?" Hagrid asked with tears in his eyes. The headmaster nodded his head yes and watched as Hagrid placed two itchy kisses on their cheeks. After Hagrid moves away, he asks the headmaster, "Melanie wanted ter know if they will be allowed ter come visit the twins."
As Albus went and placed them down in the basket he had just conjured in front of the door, he says, "It will be best if they don't. I will put a care taker near here to watch over them." He places a warming spell on the basket before placing the letter that will explain everything that happened on that dreadful Halloween night. "To the boy and girl who lived!" Albus Dumbledore said before all three of them left the street… Of course, after Albus clicked back on all the lights.
