AN: Finally the last Riveborn Wolves chapter. God this took longer then I wanted. I'm gonna take a break from my two series after posting this chapter. I'm in the mood to make a one shot. Haven't done one in awhile and I want to do it. Not sure what it will be.
Disclaimer: I do not own Paw Patrol
knew that he lived in a strange and wonderful world that was filled with mystery and wonder. After all, he had met aliens, merpups, and all sorts of crazy things including a giant sea slug. But seeing some kind of demonic water wolf howling at him was now top of the list for fascinating things ever. Along with the most scary. He could tell he wasn't the only one freaking out as Zuma looked ready to pee in his suit while Ryder was just flabbergasted and trying to find a logical sense as to what was happening in his mind. Marshall doubted that any sort of logic could answer this.
"Ancestors above...the spirits of the dead..." Aegen whispered in horror as he turned as pale as a ghost. "We have to run! Run!"
"Agreed! Everypup run!" Ryder shouted as they all turned tail and ran back the way they came.
The water wolf just howled and soon took after them as a small river of water spread from the opening and followed. Marshall didn't even think that was possible, but then again they were under a giant river to begin with and considering how much water there was there was no doubt it could travel very far. I guess logic decided to take a day off!
The four continued to run as if the devil was behind them, which could be true for all they knew. However, they soon learned that it wasn't just this one that was attacking. As they rushed through the caves, not caring where they went, they saw other Bloodmoon Star wolves being attacked by similar creatures. The water wolves would force themselves into the mouths and nostrils of the struggling and terrified wolves, drowning them by filling their lungs with water until they were completely still. Others were dragged, crying and screaming, into the other water pools before facing their grave fate. The once bloodthirsty and furious wolves were now terrified puppies who pleaded for mercy or ran with desperation on their faces.
Marshall couldn't actually help but feel sorry for them. Even if they had done such horrible things he couldn't see anyone deserving this. Drowning was a fate that was terrible in of itself, but drowning from some kind of water wolf spirit? That was beyond scary.
"I can see why Wocky hates water now!" Zuma shouted as they ran. "I don't think I want to swim again after this!"
"Me too!" Aegen shouted as they turned to the right. "Tell me we're almost out of here!"
"I think so! I'll tell the others!" Ryder shouted. "We need a fast way out of here, pronto!"
Chase was really getting disturbed by how determined the wolves were to kill each other as the battle continued on. While he had only been in a few battles himself, the Police Pup never saw them as glorifying or exciting. As a police officer, he had to treasure life and save what he could. There was a reason why he and the pups never let their enemies such as Mayor Humdinger, Sweetie, or Captain Sid Swashbuckle meet any gruesome fate should their evil plans fail. One, they never really went out of their way to cause serious harm to people. They were just plain greedy. And second, the pups took an oath to save as many people as they could and they took them seriously. The only life Chase never regretted taking was that bear when he was looking for Marshall when he ran away. Not just because he thought it had killed his brother in all but blood, but also because it was threatening him and Skye's life.
However, when one looked at the Riverborn and Bloodmoon Star wolves, one could see that they didn't just like fighting. They craved it. The two were tearing each other apart, working with various squad tactics to take each other down; it was like looking at an army. The Riverborn wolves were quick, fierce, and flowed through battle as if they were a river of themselves. The Bloodmoon Star ones, however, were like a brick wall that refused to go down until they had nothing left. It took three Riverborn wolves to take a single one of them down and the Riverborn were taking casualties because of it. Having faced the Bloodmoon Star before, Chase could easily see why most of the forest had feared them, but these ones were different. It was like they knew they were going to be defeated and had decided to just die fighting regardless of the odds.
What makes them like this? Chase thought as he saw the violence. Is it part of a wolf's nature? Or is something else?
His pup tag soon activated as Ryder's voice was soon heard. "Chase! You there?!"
"Yes, sir! We're winning on our end! Where are-"
"Chase, I don't have time to explain but you need to get us out of here right now!"
"What's wrong? Are you-"
"Just get in here and hurry! Oh shit!"
"Ryder?!" Chase shouted as the call soon ended. Without hesitation, Chase put the paw to the metal and revved up his vehicle to full power. Driving at full speed, he honked the horn to get others out of the way while calling Rocky. "Rocky, you're in charge! I'm going after Ryder and the others!"
He didn't even bother waiting for a response. When he got to the entrance, he just continued to drive forward without stopping even as the Bloodmoon Star wolves tried to get in his way.
Talon knew his ancestors would welcome him for tearing out the throats of so many enemies. His muzzle was covered in crimson blood and he could feel some of their guts in his stomach. His fellow brothers and sisters of the pack were fighting beside him and dying with honor while fighting with everything that they had. It hurt knowing that this was the end of their lives, along with his own, but such was the fate of their kind when it came for the greater good of wolfkind.
Besides, I know that Alpha Leader Balfour will avenge us! Talon thought as he tossed another corpse out of the way. "Continue to fight, my brothers! Until death! Until-"
A loud honking noise alerted Talon's attention as he faced forward only to have his eyes widen upon seeing a large vehicle with bright lights heading his way. He didn't even have time to realize it was coming after him before it crashed into Talon, face first, and tossed him into the air. Talon barely had time to register the pain before he landed on the ground with a large thud and saw only darkness.
And so Talon joined his ancestors at last.
Ryder was sure he had never run as fast as he did in his life until now and the only thing that was keeping him from falling into exhaustion was the fear of what was coming after him. He could tell the pups were getting tired with Marshall even being forced to carry Aegen on his back after the little wolf pup could run no more. Even Zuma looked ready to fall over in agony from pushing his legs too much.
There was now no more sign of the Bloodmoon Star pack as it was clear that the rest were fighting at the entrance or they were now victims of the water wolves. Speaking of which, Ryder looked behind him and gulped upon seeing that more of the water wolves had joined the original and merged with it. It had turned what was a small river after them into a giant wave filling up the entire cave with multiple giant wolves of water coming after them. If they didn't get out of here soon this was going to be a watery end for them all.
"Can't wun...anymore..." Zuma gasped as he started to slow down. "Help..."
"Come on, Zuma!" Marshall gasped as he helped him up while continuing to keep up the pace. "Almost there!"
Ryder was about to reach over and grab Zuma when the familiar sound of Chase on his bullhorn echoed throughout the cave. "Ryder, sir! Where are you?!"
"Chase! Over here! Hurry!" Ryder shouted in desperation as he picked up his pups and used what strength he had to carry them. Around the corner, Chase sped down the cave and looked happy to see them until he saw what was chasing them and gasped in horror.
"What the fu-"
"Just drive!" Ryder shouted as he tossed the pups into the co-riders seat and grabbed the back of the vehicle. Chase didn't even hesitate as he pushed the gas and set his alarm lights on while driving back the way he came.
This seemed to have pissed the water wolves so much they roared and slowly started to merge as one. A few seconds later, the head of the running water became a giant wolf's head and howled after the car. It's jaw was big enough to swallow them all in one gulp as everyone screamed in terror.
"Keep driving!" Marshall shouted in fear as the water seemed to be only getting faster with each second.
Chase narrowed his eyes as the entrance to the cave soon became clear and drove as fast as he could while pulling out his megaphone. "EVERYONE, GET AWAY FROM THE CAVE! DO IT NOW!"
Skye wasn't sure why her boyfriend had shouted that but it seemed to have done the trick as all the Riverborn Wolves and the others of her team had run away from the cave. A few seconds later, Chase's vehicle rushed out like a mad dog, even running over some of the few remaining Bloodmoon Star wolves that were still alive. What happened next was something Skye would never forget in her life.
Out of nowhere, a giant head made of water, which looked like a wolf's head, bursted out of the cave while opening its jaws. Any remaining Bloodmoon Star wolves were quickly devoured by it and their panicking screams echoed even as far as above in the sky where Skye was. She watched in disbelief as this head of water even extended out of the cave for a bit before howling into the moon.
It was like something out of a fantasy movie, something so beautiful and yet terrifying in the way it showed itself. And then, just as soon as it appeared, it faded away. Like a puppet without strings, the water ceased to move and fell apart before spreading out like a large splash puddle. From its remains were corpses of the various Bloodmoon Star wolves who had drowned in its embrace and met their final end.
For a long time there was silence, but then the Riverborn wolves began to howl in a strange tune. Almost as if it was out of worship. Since she arrived, she had heard of the wolves speak about these ancestors of theirs who watch over them as spirits from the great beyond. Looking up at the moon, Skye began to wonder if there really was any truth to these words.
Note to self, look up spirituality more when I get home, Rocky thought to himself as he began to walk around the cave that once was the base of the Bloodmoon Star wolves, but was now void of all life. Because I can't think of a scientific reason for what just happened.
After seeing a giant wolf head made of water howling into the moon, one could actually forgive Rocky for thinking that science was pretty much a no-go for answers in this case. Even Ryder couldn't give an explanation for what he had just seen, and instead was just being silent while getting checked on by Marshall and the wolf healers to make sure he and the rest were okay. Thankfully, none of them seemed to have had any injuries, and Rocky's heart warmed when he saw Aegen nuzzle warmly with his parents who had tears of joy in their eyes. Still, despite their victory, there was still much to do. The Riverborn wolves were collecting their dead while Tylus also ordered that all the Bloodmoon Star wolves were to be checked to see if they were all dead or not. If they weren't, they were to be killed at once.
Rocky thought it was overkill to kill a defeated enemy, but then again Tylus did almost lose his son to them so perhaps it was just a father wanting to make sure his family was safe. Still, Rocky had no intention of killing an enemy and instead just let Jake or any of the other wolves accompanying them do it. They found a few, barely alive, but looked almost happy and welcoming upon getting the teeth or the knife to the throat. I guess they were in so much pain they wanted to die.
"This one is dead too," one of the wolves accompanying them said as he shook his head. "To die by the power of the ancestors. I guess it's clear they do not favor Bloodmoon Star."
"Or they're just pissed off at the death that's been going on," Another one, a female said, shivering. "I knew the river was twisted by angry spirits but I never imagined it being this bad."
"Do you really think spirits did this?" Rocky asked, curiously.
"Of course, don't dogs or humans worship their ancestors?"
"I think they worship some kind of greater deity than their ancestors? They call him...God, which is their word for The Creator I think?"
"The Creator? But The Creator is gone. After he had done his work he left it to prosper on its own," the female wolf turned to Jake. "Has The Creator shown himself to humans? Has he returned?"
"Uh, it's kinda complicated," Jake said, rubbing the back of his head. "Humans worship their gods differently. If they believe them at all."
"You humans are weird."
Rocky snorted and couldn't help but agree with that. Even after spending all of his life with humans, Rocky found humanity to be a very strange species. Walking into another small cave, he saw that there was no life around at first before a small gasp alerted him to a presence. Turning around, he saw something hidden behind some rocks in a corner and slowly approached it.
"Hello?" Rocky whispered as he approached the figure which gasped upon hearing him. Once he was close enough, he almost let out one of his own. "You..."
"You...ugh," The wolf pup coughed as she shook her head to get rid of the dizziness she had. She was completely wet with small bits of dock on her dusty coat while a small bleeding scar could be seen on her forehead. She looked upon Rocky with fear as he couldn't believe the odds. She was alive? After everything that had happened, did this wolf pup survive? "Ancestors, you of all dogs..."
"You're that wolf pup from Wintria," Rocky whispered in awe. She didn't look to be seriously hurt, if anything she looked just wet and exhausted. "What are you doing here?"
"I was sent...to help the pack here...but then you and your mutts ruined everything," she whispered, before closing her eyes. "I was getting ready to die in battle when...that water...the ancestors...I don't know how I survived..."
Rocky tried to walk over, but she just glared at him. "Hey, I just want to check if you're okay."
"Why? Just kill me already," she whispered angrily as she turned away. "I'm too tired to fight. Besides, I'm finished anyway. Just end me and get it over with."
"You...you want to die?" Rocky asked in horror. "Why?"
"I've failed twice to do what I was told. I can't even die in battle right," she chuckled harshly. "I'll be killed for being weak, so why delay the inevitable? Just end me, Rocky. Maybe now I'll know peace by being with my old pack in the afterlife..."
Rocky just stared at this lone wolf girl who was looking at him with a plea to end her just like that. He stared at her, wondering what he should do until a voice cried out, "Yo, Rocky? Anything wrong?"
Rocky paused for a moment before making up his mind. He turned around and shouted, "No, just more dead wolves. Keep going."
He waited until he was sure the others moved on before turning to the wolf girl. "Stay here for a bit longer and then you can leave."
"W-what? Aren't you going to kill me?" She asked, confused.
"No, I'm not," Rocky said as he smirked at her. "I don't want to kill you."
"But I'm trying to kill you! You are my enemy!" She hissed before growling. "Do you want to shame me? Do you look down upon me?"
"No, I just don't want to hurt you," Rocky said with a sigh. "Look, if you really are determined to kill me then live. Live until you are strong enough to face me. When you do, come and find me and we'll have a one on one duel. Would that be okay for you?"
Staring at him and blinking, the wolf pup looked like she was trying to process what was going on. "A...duel?"
"Yeah," Rocky said with a smile. "If you win, you can kill me, but if I win? You become my friend."
"A friend?" She stared at him in disbelief. "Are all you dogs this weird?"
"Actually, I think it's just me," Rocky chuckled. "You win the duel, I'll let you kill me, so long as you promise not to hurt my friends. But if I win, you have to become my friend and stop hurting me and my friends. So what do you say?"
"...Very well, Rocky," she said, nodding her head. "I accept your terms. When I have regained my strength I will seek you out and we will have this duel."
"And if I win you will be my friend?" Rocky asked.
"...Yes, I swear to the ancestors," She bitterly agreed. "I suppose it is the least I can do since you are sparing me..."
"Great, then I'll wait for you," Rocky said before turning around and leaving. He paused and turned his head to her. "By the way, what's your name?"
"Terra."
"That's a cute name for you, I think it fits! Well, see you soon, Terra!" Rocky said as he rushed out to join the others.
Terra just sat there, waiting in stunned silence before asking herself, He thinks my name is cute?
It took a few days to finally deal with the aftermath, but at last everyone was ready to finally cross the bridge. The wolves held a memorial for their fallen and to pray to the ancestors for mercy in hopes of appeasing their angry spirits, but afterwards it was agreed that there was to be no more delay. One by one the wolves and Paw Patrol all crossed the bridge that they had worked together on and were able to finally cross the river.
"I can't believe it worked," Shora said in awe as she looked at the bridge that she and her entire clan had just crossed. "To think that such a strange concept is able to do so much..."
"That's the power of invention," Ryder said with a smile. The two soon walked over to their respective groups who were now on opposite ends. For the Paw Patrol, they would need to head north to continue their way towards the mountain. For Riverborn, they would be heading west to live in safety both from any future Bloodmoon Star attacks and the upcoming National Guard.
"I guess this is it," Jake said as both sides looked at each other with sorrow. "I have to admit, I'm gonna miss you guys."
"We will miss you too," Tylus said, stepping forward with a smile. "A long time ago, humans, dogs, and wolves in this forest had peace among each other. It is good to see that such a thing is possible. You have helped my clan cross the river at its worst. You have given us knowledge, food, and shelter. You have saved my son, my heir, twice. Therefore, I feel I am honorbound to do this."
Kneeling before them, Tylus and his entire clan all placed their noses in the dirt and closed their eyes. "From this day forth, we the Riverborn Wolves, hereby swear to be your allies forever more to you and your descendants. Your enemies are our enemies. Your friends are our friends. Call us, and we will answer to aid you in whatever danger you are in."
"And we'll do the same as well," Ryder said with a smile and nod. "Whenever you're in trouble. Just howl for help."
"Or call us with Aegen's pup tag," Marshall pointed out. "We hope you guys stay safe."
"We will," Shora said with a warm smile. "We also hope you find your friend, Everest."
Aegen soon rushed over to Zuma. The little wolf pup had tears in his eyes as he hugged the chocolate lab. "I'll miss you, big brother."
"Hey, I'll come back and see you again," Zuma whispered as he hugged him. "Promise me you'll be a good pup, Dude?"
"I'll be the best pup ever," Aegen sniffed before returning to his pack.
With one final nod to each other, the Riverborn wolves soon ran off and howled along the way. The Paw Patrol waved goodbye before one by one getting into the Paw Patroller to set out on the next leg of their journey. However, before he got in, Rocky looked across the bridge where he saw a figure staring at him all alone. Terra, who had fully recovered, was watching him not with anger but curiosity and determination.
Rocky smiled at her and winked before he got inside and soon the Paw Patroller was off.
