This isn't a prompt but I found the perfect Hayffie song and I was asked to do something with it so… I did. The sung is Run by Daughter and it's just sooooo Hayffie… So here we have a series of drabbles 100 words each (that was hard). I hope you like it!

Run

While I powder my nose, he will powder his gums
And if I try to get close, he's already gone

Silence stretches in her small bedroom cart, Effie doesn't know how to break it. She isn't sure she wants to break it either. It seems each time she and Haymitch talk to each other they end up shouting. She puts down her lipstick quietly and walks to where he is sitting on the bed staring into nothing. She puts a hand on his shoulder and squeezes, he looks up, eyebrows raised in a silent question.

"The Tour will be over soon."

A cloud passes over his eyes. He shrugs her hand away and storms out. She should have remained silent.

Don't know where he's going, I don't know where he's been
But he is restless at nights, Cause he has horrible dreams

"It's over. You're safe."

He struggles against her grip but she holds on until he finally yields to her embrace, collapsing against her chest with heavy pants. His arms sneak around her waist and gather her close until she isn't sure who's holding whom. Her skin will be bruised the next day but she's alright with it as long as he's free of his nightmares for the time being. Problem is, she has an inkling that it won't happen. She can be wrong, of course, but she thinks he is more afraid of the real world than of his dreams.

So we lay in the dark, Cause we got nothing to say
Just the beating of hearts, like two drums in the grey

They're lying on their back, the sheets stick to their sweaty skin, they're staring at the ceiling and they've got nothing to say at all. Maybe there is too much to say. She wants to confess secrets, fears, hopes but she can't bring herself to do it. People are dying left and right, there is only fear and no place for hope, as for secrets, that's already what they are.

She snuggles against him, places her head on his chest and listens to his regular heartbeat. His hand coils around her neck, the tip of his fingers on her pulse.

I don't know what we're doing, I don't know what we've done
But the fire is coming, so I think we should run

He doesn't ask why she came back to the penthouse even though she should be halfway home by now. He doesn't say it was reckless. He swoops on her as soon as he glimpses her in his bedroom door frame. He tears the wigs off her head, he pins her to the wall, he burrows his face in the crook of her neck and he stills. He doesn't cry, he never does, not in front of her at least but he's breathing hard enough she knows he wants to. It is desperate.

She pretends not to notice the missing token.

While I put on my shoes, he will button his coat

She takes her time getting dressed and he takes his time watching her, committing every move to memory. Her apartment is silent and oppressing in a way it never was. She wants time to freeze. She wants to push a button so everything would just stop. She wants to go back to when it was only Haymitch and her without Katniss and Peeta to worry about. She wants to go back to when it was not easy but simpler.

"I love you."

He pretends not to hear but, after a few minutes, he brings her cold hand to his lips.

And we will step outside, Checking out the coast is clear
On both side, We don't wanna be seen

"Stay alive."

His whisper is the last thing she hears before his lips crashes on her. It's not goodbye, it's a farewell and it kills her a bit inside. Soon he's out of her apartment and out of her life. Odds are he will soon be dead or maybe she will be. Odds never were much in their favor. She wants to scream, she wants to lie down and die, she wants to crawl in her bed and stay there forever. She forces a smile on her lips. It hurts. She can't tell if it's the smile or his absence.

Oh, this is suicide, But you can't see the ropes

She makes excuses for his absence at the Training Center but nobody believes them. People sidestep her, her fellow escorts look at her with pity or loathing, Gamemakers are suspicious. She smiles and she smiles until she feels like her lips will be stuck in a forged grin forever. She smiles until Katniss' arrow destroys the arena, then she finally crumbles. She waits but no one comes to arrest her. She waits some more but everybody seems at a loss and nobody can tell her who's alive or dead. She grabs a bag and she leaves. Stay alive, he said.

And I won't tell my mother, It's better she don't know
And he won't tell his folks, Cause they're already ghosts

She's in her parents' parlor when the bombs fall on District Twelve. She watches it all on the giant screen covering the wall and she can't help but close her eyes.

"That will teach those dogs." her mother spits.

Effie stays silent. She thinks about dirty streets and dirty people who always look up at her with fear and loathing. She thinks about a man who sometimes tells her of a green meadow and dark mines. She wonders if the bed in which they made love the morning of the Reaping is buried under tons of rubble. Like they are.

So we'll just keep each other, As safe as we can
Until we meet the border, Until we make our plan

The Peacekeepers come for her, she surrenders easily. Her mother's screams don't register, neither do her father's. Haymitch left her behind so she would be safe, she isn't. She let him go so he would be safe, she hopes he is.

She answers their questions calmly and with the fake obliviousness she puts in every of her smiles. Perhaps it isn't that fake. She's surprised when the first blow comes. She shouldn't be.

They tell her he used her, that she's stupid for trusting his lies. She wants to believe he loved her.

They call her a traitor.

She is.

Will you stay with me my love? For another day…
Cause I don't want to be alone, When I'm in this state

She's ready to die when the rebels take her to Thirteen. Her body is in pieces and her mind is broken. She doesn't think there's anything worth the effort of taking another breath and, of course, that's when he comes in. Grey eyes that saw her under the make-up and sees her now despite the bruising on her face.

He saves her again.

He saved her once already from her own ignorance and cruelty.

When he kisses her, she decides maybe there still are things worth living for. It's loneliness that kills her. She's always lonely when he isn't there.

Will you stay with me my love? Till we're old and grey…
I don't wanna be alone, When these bones decay

Twelve is a cold place in winter but she learns to love it. Haymitch raises geese and waits for the train to bring him his liquor, she takes care of Haymitch and waits for the train to bring her the latest dresses from the Capitol. They make sure to never stay angry at each other. It wouldn't be perfect for anyone else but it is for them. This isn't heaven but they've been in hell until then so she thinks this is purgatory. They can be happy in purgatory. They can be happy as long as they have each other.
